[libreoffice-marketing] Versioning scheme.

2023-05-27 Thread Marcin Zolisiarz
Dear All,

I think it's hard to have consensus here, but we must not play with this
scheme so frivolously.

The next version due in early 2024 should be 8.0, and the next one on
mid-2024 should be 9.0 - this way we're going to always have an even number
in Winter and odd in Summer.

The 2nd digit should be used as a minor/bugfix release.

Within time we are going to reach big numbers, but our focus should be not
on numbers but on fresh/still branch and that users do upgrades reguraily,
report bugs if they are found and always 'in sync'.

Additionally, number 8 has huge marketing potential, so let's embrace it!
I think Italo would not object to this.

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: [libreoffice-design] Re: Moving to LibreOffice 8?

2023-04-01 Thread Marcin Zolisiarz
LibreOffice is a mature, stable software with no major changes, so waiting
for anything big to name it 8.0 is pointless.
So is the second digit after the dot.

Why not drop 7 after 7.7 and make i LO 8 (not 8.0) then?

From marketing perspective it's crucial to promote LibreOffice Community
(still/fresh) and being in the channel with upgrades rather than focusing
on particular version?

LibreOffice 7.6 then 7.7 then 8, 9, 10... is worth considering. What do you
think???

[libreoffice-marketing] Marketing Objectives for LibreOffice 8.0

2022-09-20 Thread Marcin Zolisiarz
@Italo thank you for explaining that the next release will be 7.5 as
development and marketing goals haven't changed for the last 2.5 years.

I think compatibility is a moving target and there is a chance that we will
be stuck with 7.x series for longer.

What do you think should be marketing and technical objectives for the 8.0
major release?

With 3.x it was code clean-up, with 4.x refactoring, 5.x brought us
improved UI, 6.x the broken promise of LOOL and 7.x better MSO
Compatibility.

What are current pain points within the community which 8.x should address?

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 7.5 vs LibreOffice 8.0

2022-09-19 Thread Marcin Zolisiarz
Dear All

I’ve just wanted to ask whether the next release of LibreOffice would be
7.5 or 8.0?

I saw that in the code there is still 7.5 in the configure.ac, but to this
time no x.5 releases were made, just after x.4 there was a brand new major
release with major improvements and features be it ODF 1.3 or revamped UI.

When this decision will be made and how can I contribute to the next major
release in a meaningful way?
