Re: Marketing Hackfest

Paul:

As you know, I also live in Chicago however I don't think I will be
able to get off work to attend during the day. I would be more than
happy to get together and hang out with people in the evenings. Is
there a web page with information about the Marketing Hackfest? I
would like to forward the information on to the various user groups in
Chicago.

The Gnome Chicago User Group has pretty much faded away. We did a
little bit a couple years ago when I first started it but then
people's interest and my free time start to dwindle away.

Gnome-Do

Those are just some things I thought of off the top of my head that
might nice to showcase. It would be a good idea not just to show off
big name projects that everyone knows about but also some lesser known
really cool GNOME-ish projects.

I will be combining the booths if I can't find someone to run the
GNOME booth. I have talked to some people from the Chicago LUG and
they have offered to help work in the booth but couldn't promise to
run the booth. I am gonna email the Chicago Ubuntu loco and the
Chicago LUG to see if anybody is interested in running the booth.

GNOME Booth at Flourish Conference

2008-01-10 Thread Kevin Harriss
Hello All,

On April 4-5th in Chicago, Illinois there will be the Flourish
Conference [1]. Flourish is a conference dealing with aspects of
FLOSS in business, academia and personal use. Currently KDE, Ubuntu
and Foresight all have booths at Flourish and I think it would be
great to have a GNOME booth there as well. The only problem is that I
will be running the Foresight booth so I can't run both booths at the
same time. I am wondering if anybody would be able to work or knows
of anybody willing to work the GNOME booth at Flourish.

Patrick,

I hopefully I will be able to attend Ohio Linux Fest this year, I was
going to attend but couldn't due to school requirements. I did plan
to have our group attend conferences and help announce Gnome, i.e.
attend BarCamp Chicago and possibly pyCon next year which is going to
be in Chicago.

I have requested a mailing list from Gnome and whenever I get the list
I will post the info here. Also does anybody know about requesting
web space from Gnome. I would like to have chicago.gnome.org if
possible and if they could do the web hosting that would be great. I
am not sure if they do this for other user groups, if not it would be
a nice thing to offer.

I agree that we need to revamp the marketing team. Maybe separate it
into two groups, one group/team for marketing the desktop and another
team for marketing to embedded devices. This will allow each group to
focus on its intended audience, where the same audience for the
desktop might not be the same as embedded devices. Also this would
keep people who are only interested in the desktop from getting
swamped with mail about gnome embedded.

A list of responsibilities would not only be good for knowing what
needs to be done for each group and to see where somethings may
overlap, but also for letting new people know what task they could
take on to help get started with Gnome.

I agree that mailing list are good so people can join when they have a
chance, but I think for a brainstorming session we really need a for
of live communication and currently the best form seems to be using
IRC.

2007-04-22 Thread Kevin Harriss
Wiki pages or any documentatoin would be helpful. I will be keeping
notes of everything I do so if I am able to get this group off the
ground I might be able to contribute some documentation on user
groups.

Also, if anybody knows any gnome devs that in the chicagoland area
that might be interested in this group could you pass this information
on to them or you can send me there contact information and I will
talk to them.

Thanks

Starting Chicago Gnome User Group

2007-04-21 Thread Kevin Harriss
Hello,

My name is Kevin Harriss and I am new to this list was just wondering
if anybody was interested in joining/helping out a Gnome User Group
based in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. I was looking at the
list of Gnome User Groups and noticed that there was a lack of US
based user groups so I decided that I would try to correct this
problem. I know there is a strong tech base in Chicago with Google,
Red Hat and IBM. I am actively involved in the Free/Open Source
Software community in Chicago, I work with the Chicago GNU/Linux User
Group, http://chiglug.org and I also help out with packaging for
Foresight Linux. Foresight Linux is the base for the new Gnome Live
CD. If you are interested in helping out, a couple of us are hanging
out in #gnome-chi on irc.gnome.org please stop by and say Hello.

Also, if anybody has any information about starting a Gnome user group
or information learned during the process of running a user group
please pass it along. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
