Re: Proposal for GNOME press release about Nokia device

Hi,

Sriram Ramkrishna a crit :

GNOME enters embedded device market with Nokia

No!Sorry, but we don't want to be in the embedded market. We discussed
this at length in both marketing BOFs. We want this to be ISVs give
GNOME software stack a stamp of approval

Unfortunately, given that there was a release about Nokia during GUADEC
already: http://www.gnome.org/press/releases/nokiadonation.html it looks
like your work has been wasted. Leslie made the release in Stuttgart in
co-operation with the Nokia people who were here.

Leslie's going to be coming on the list now, so hopefully this won't
happen again.

Cheers,
Dave.

Might be nice to post a summery to the list who was there, what topics
have been discussed, and what the agreements were; similar to the board
meeting summeries.

Hi Claus,

Luis took lots of notes. I have only my memories. I expect he will write
it up when he's back home and has recovered.

Cheers,
Dave.

Well, the amount of time I spent on it is negligible. But since
I did say I would try to come up with something I wanted to follow
through on what I committed (albeit late.)

Oh good! :)

Relevant is everything interesting around the event:

In a few weeks, we'll be in a position to start a marketing campaign, and
possibly involve some press releases, about 10x10 (see my topaz talk video).

For example, I suggested a 5x5 goal here last october [1]. You probably
never saw it, or don't remember.

Whoa, prescient! Funny, that's about the time I started seriously thinking
about this as well. I wonder if something happened around then to inject it
into our heads? Rad! ;-)

I already started thinking about a wiki page, made a few calculations
about the numbers, possible ways to reach that numbers, etc. Very
 inspriring talk.

I only missed a few details about your talk's topic Topaz. ;)

Ha ha. Thanks. :-)

Proposal for GNOME press release about Nokia device

2005-05-25 Thread Christian Fredrik Kalager Schaller
Attached is a press release draft I wrote, edited and cleaned up a bit
by Murray.

Christian
Title:
GNOME Foundation congratulates Nokia on launch of Nokia 770

GNOME Foundation congratulates Nokia on launch of Nokia 770

Nokia Corporation launched today the Nokia 770 web tablet based on GNOME
open source technologies

May 25, 2005 - Boston, USA

The GNOME Foundation would like to congratulate Nokia on their sucessful
launch of the Nokia 770 web tablet. It's great to see an industry leader
such as Nokia bring GNU/Linux and GNOME technologies
to the mobile devices market.

Nokia's use of many GNOME technologies, such as GTK+, GStreamer, GConf,
GNOME-VFS and dbus, acknowledges the effort made by
hundreds of people over the last few years. This also shows how the GNOME
community allows a wide variety of companies and individuals to successfully
work together.

This is in addition to Nokia's previous granting of patent rights to Linux Kernel
developers. The GNOME Foundation is truly excited by Nokia's involvement and looks
forward to extending the relationship during this year's GUADEC conference in
Stuttgart, where Nokia is one of the presenters.

The GNOME Foundation would also like say thank Fluendo, OpenedHand and
Imendio who have worked with Nokia on this device, providing expertise
in the use of GNOME technologies.

The GNOME Foundation is happy to see Nokia taking a very
open approach with this project, ranging from the use of open source software
to Creative Commons licensing for the graphics and artwork. We think Nokia have
set an example to follow., says Chairman of the GNOME Foundation
board, Owen Taylor.

About the GNOME Foundation

Comprised of hundreds of volunteer developers and industry-leading companies, the GNOME Foundation is committed to supporting the advancement of GNOME. The Foundation provides organizational, financial and legal support to the GNOME project and helps determine its vision and roadmap. GNOME is an entirely free user environment for desktops, networked servers and portable Internet devices. The modern architecture and design of GNOME includes a technically advanced application development platform and a powerful end-user desktop environment. Major software companies and computer manufacturers support the GNOME development effort, which is led by a worldwide community of volunteers. More information on GNOME is available at www.gnome.org.

I think the sentence about patents should be dropped - Nokia are one of
the largest pro-software patent forces lobbying in Europe right now.
Thanking them for making some patents available to a single free
software project condones their patenting behaviour.

Cheers,

Alex.
