Charles, It is a peculiar situation, with only 2 parties in the
state assembly and one bagging more than 95% of the seats and the other with
just 3 seats. Naturally, BJP will be the opposition, whether they qualify to
be an official opposition group. As regards the AAP's leftist credentials, it is
just an anti-establishment party and its leaders have vehemently denied it
being a leftist party. But it is against monopoly capital and religeous
fundamentalism and as you said, events may push it to the left.

Today's poll results of Delhi State (India's capital Region) has given a big
moral boost to all those who oppose the Fascist BJP, which is holding power In
India. The AAP (Common Man's Party), headed by Arvind Kejrival had bagged 67 of
the 70 seats, with BJP sulking far behind with 3 seats. The Congress Party,
which ruled the state for 15 years, drew a blank.According to poll analysts,
the massive verdict is the result of disenchantment of the poor and middle
classes with the undiluted neo-liberal policies put in place by Modi in his 8
months of rule. People of Delhi have not taken kindly to issues like 1) BJP and
its outfits fanning religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims and Chritians
2) Unpreceedented rise in power and water tariffs, following their
privatisation 3) Issues of womens' safety (many orthodox and fanatic BJP
leaders blamed women for the rapes) 4) CorruptionModi promised Good Days,
with his rise to power. But now, the tweets go about declaring that with the
defeat of BJP in Delhi, Good Days are really going to arrive.Modi statred a
campaign Clean India Campaign: but the tweeters decalred that with the
sweeping out of BJP, the Clean India program has really taken off.

[Marxism] Stiglitz on Greek economic situation

A Greek Morality Tale
by Joseph Stiglitz
Project Syndicate
February 2, 2015
http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/greece-eurozone-austerity-reform-by-joseph-e--stiglitz-2015-02

NEW YORK – When the euro crisis began a half-decade ago, Keynesian
economists predicted that the austerity that was being imposed on
Greece and the other crisis countries would fail. It would stifle
growth and increase unemployment – and even fail to decrease the
debt-to-GDP ratio. Others – in the European Commission, the European
Central Bank, and a few universities – talked of expansionary
contractions. But even the International Monetary Fund argued that
contractions, such as cutbacks in government spending, were just that
– contractionary.

We hardly needed another test. Austerity had failed repeatedly, from
its early use under US President Herbert Hoover, which turned the
stock-market crash into the Great Depression, to the IMF “programs”
imposed on East Asia and Latin America in recent decades. And yet when
Greece got into trouble, it was tried again.

Greece largely succeeded in following the dictate set by the “troika”
(the European Commission the ECB, and the IMF): it converted a primary
budget deficit into a primary surplus. But the contraction in
government spending has been predictably devastating: 25%
unemployment, a 22% fall in GDP since 2009, and a 35% increase in the
debt-to-GDP ratio. And now, with the anti-austerity Syriza party’s
overwhelming election victory, Greek voters have declared that they
have had enough.

So, what is to be done? First, let us be clear: Greece could be blamed
for its troubles if it were the only country where the troika’s
medicine failed miserably. But Spain had a surplus and a low debt
ratio before the crisis, and it, too, is in depression. What is needed
is not structural reform within Greece and Spain so much as structural
reform of the eurozone’s design and a fundamental rethinking of the
policy frameworks that have resulted in the monetary union’s
spectacularly bad performance.
. . .
So it is not debt restructuring, but its absence, that is “immoral.”
There is nothing particularly special about the dilemmas that Greece
faces today; many countries have been in the same position. What makes
Greece’s problems more difficult to address is the structure of the
eurozone: monetary union implies that member states cannot devalue
their way out of trouble, yet the modicum of European solidarity that
must accompany this loss of policy flexibility simply is not there.

Seventy years ago, at the end of World War II, the Allies recognized
that Germany must be given a fresh start. They understood that
Hitler’s rise had much to do with the unemployment (not the inflation)
that resulted from imposing more debt on Germany at the end of World
War I. The Allies did not take into account the foolishness with which
the debts had been accumulated or talk about the costs that Germany
had imposed on others. Instead, they not only forgave the debts; they
actually provided aid, and the Allied troops stationed in Germany
provided a further fiscal stimulus.

When companies go bankrupt, a debt-equity swap is a fair and efficient
solution. The analogous approach for Greece is to convert its current
bonds into GDP-linked bonds. If Greece does well, its creditors will
receive more of their money; if it does not, they will get less. Both
sides would then have a powerful incentive to pursue pro-growth
policies.

Seldom do democratic elections give as clear a message as that in
Greece. If Europe says no to Greek voters’ demand for a change of
course, it is saying that democracy is of no importance, at least when
it comes to economics. Why not just shut down democracy, as
Newfoundland effectively did when it entered into receivership before
World War II?

One hopes that those who understand the economics of debt and
austerity, and who believe in democracy and humane values, will
prevail. Whether they will remains to be seen.

Below, the link to a very good background piece on the almost impossible task
facing Greece - small, poor, and bankrupt - to escape from the straitjacket of
eurozone austerity, even under a popular leadership like Syriza committed to
radical change. The new government has now reportedly indicated it is prepared
to accept 70% of the austerity package earlier imposed on the country by the
EU, ECB, and IMF. The callous hardline taken by the “troika” and the German
government as well as the established governing parties in even highly indebted
states like Spain, is essentially political. The debt relief Greece seeks could
be easily provided by its European and international creditors, but they want
to make an example of a humbled Syriza that the equally discontented Spanish,
Portuguese, Italian, French, and other Europeans, inspired by the electoral
success of the left-wing Greek party, won’t dare emulate.

The article is by Susan Webber, a former Wall Street analyst who blogs under
the name Yves Smith on the widely read nakedcapitalism site.

The bould Shinners have certainly stolen a march, a big one, on both Fianna
Fail and the government by announcing their 100th anniversary celebrations
of the Rising. And that these celebrations are open to all. In other
words, they are effectively acting as if they are the government and the
state and the inheritors of the mantle of 1916, all rolled into one.

Their programme begins early – it starts this August by marking the 1915
funeral of Fenian O’Donovan Rossa, one of the events that showed the size
and power of the Irish Volunteers (the Citizen Army also took part). And,
of course, it was at Rossa’s funeral where Pearse gave his famous graveside
oration, culminating with the words “Ireland unfree will never be at peace.”

An exhibition on the Rising, Revolution 1916 Eiri Amach, will run for no
less than 33 weeks at the Ambassador Hotel at the top of O’Connell Street.
International Women’s Day, March 8, will be dedicated to the role of women
in the Rising and the dual fight for the rights of Ireland and of women.
(Ironic, considering the Shinners tawdry shilly-shallying on the very basic
right of women to access abortion.)

A visual spectacular is planned for the GPO, running the actual 100th
anniversary of the dates of the Rising – April 24-29. A 3D video will tell
the story of the rebellion, with the GPO itself even appearing to come
under shell fire and be engulfed with flames, as it was in 1916.

This is the third in a series of interviews Nelson Blackstock and I
conducted with veterans of Bert Cochran and Harry Braverman’s Socialist
Union in the late 1990s. Now 95 years old, Erwin Baur is one of the few
remaining revolutionaries who had first-hand experience in the CIO
organizing drives of the 1930s.

In this first part of the interview, Erwin Baur talks about becoming a
socialist in high school after coming into contact with a Russian immigrant
who admired Leon Trotsky.

He then discusses the Little Steel Strike of 1937 and how he disagrees with
Gus Hall’s assessment of its outcome.

After losing his job at Youngstown Steel and Tube as a result of his role
in the strike, he moves to Salem, Ohio and gets a new job where he meets
Laverne Halsey, the plant “Bolshevik” who was victimized for his role in a
1933 auto workers strike and who got firsthand experience with Stalinism in
the USSR.

Finally, he discusses Bert Cochran’s entry into the trade union movement.

For more on Erwin and his wife Estar, who was also a long-time member of
the Socialist Workers Party and the Socialist Union, I recommend Charles
Williams’s “Introduction to When the UAW Was Young” that appeared in the
November/December 2007 Against the Current (
