Five key figures of the European left have launched a new initiative “for a
Plan B in Europe”.

A statement was jointly published on September 11 by former Die Linke (Left
Party) leader Oskar Lafontaine from Germany; Italian deputy and economist
Stefano Fassina, leader of France's Left Party Jean-Luc Melenchon, and
former deputy and parliamentary speaker Zoe Kostantopoulou and ex-finance
minister Yanis Varoufakis from Greece — both former members of SYRIZA who
resigned after the left-wing party accepted harsh austerity measures in
July.

Squaddism, Trotsky and fighting the fascists

As fascism organises in Australia today, Trotsky's thinking about the squaddism
of the German Communist Party in the early 1930s seems to me to contain
important lessons for the left today.

‘Scioli’s bid reveals the failure of Kirchnerism’

*Workers’ Leftist Front (FIT) presidential runner Nicolás del Caño talks to
the Herald*

Nicolás del Caño is the candidate of the Workers’ Leftist Front (FIT) for
the October 25 presidential elections. In August, the 35-year-old Socialist
Workers’ Party (PTS) candidate managed to defeat his internal rival,
historic Workers’ Party (PO) leader Jorge Altamira.

The FIT — created in 2011 — is now seeking to improve on the 3.41 percent
of the vote mustered in the primaries, a commendable percentage for a
Trotskyist front in Argentina, and will try to snatch the fourth place from
Progressives candidate Margarita Stolbizer. Del Caño talked about the
challenges that the front faces with the Herald in his office in the
Congress last week.

(Fascinating story about shady consulting company that provides
testimony for hire in cases involving corporate polluters trying to
silence critics.)

NY Times, Oct. 12 2015
Science Consultant Pushes Back Against Unlikely Opponents
By BARRY MEIER

Dr. Dennis Paustenbach, the head of the scientific consulting firm
ChemRisk, has long been a leading expert for companies under legal fire
for environmental practices or product safety. He and his firm have also
drawn the scrutiny of investigative journalists.

In 2005, The Wall Street Journal reported on a controversial role
ChemRisk played during the case that became the basis for the movie
“Erin Brockovich.” Seven years later, The Chicago Tribune raised
questions about a study by Dr. Paustenbach on the safety of flame
retardants. And a 2013 article by the Center for Public Integrity
examined his efforts to roll back a proposal concerning workplace safety.

Dr. Paustenbach has insisted that ChemRisk’s work is scientifically
sound and ethical, adding that plaintiffs’ lawyers have been behind the
attacks on its credibility. And until recently, the company had never
sued any publications or writers for defamation.

But the firm is now locked in a legal fight with some unlikely and
defiant opponents: two environmental activists who published an unpaid
article in The Huffington Post about ChemRisk’s work related to the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

“If they had not said a word and let it go, it would have slipped off
into obscurity,” said one of the authors of the article, Karen Savage, a
former middle-school math teacher who noted that the article was
initially read by only 400 people.

The lawsuit against Ms. Savage, 49, and her co-defendant, Cherri
Foytlin, 42, highlights how the Internet has blurred the line between
activists and journalists. But it also raises questions about why
ChemRisk is pursuing the case when it chose not to sue a more formidable
adversary, The Wall Street Journal, against which it raised similar
complaints.

Thomas Clare, a lawyer who has long represented Dr. Paustenbach, said
the researcher was traveling and unavailable for an interview. In a
statement, ChemRisk, which is now a unit of Cardno ChemRisk, said its
goal in bringing the action was to “set the record straight and alert
anyone who chooses to publish false claims that they will be held
accountable.”

It also said that Ms. Foytlin and Ms. Savage had intended to write a
“hit piece,” and as long as the article remained online, its “falsehoods
will continue to do substantial harm to ChemRisk’s reputation.”

The two women appear unfazed. Without resources to hire a lawyer, they
initially represented themselves. And last year, after a New York state
court threw out ChemRisk’s original lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds,
Ms. Foytlin took to her Facebook page when the company again sued Ms.
Savage and her in Massachusetts.

“That’s cool fellas,“ wrote Ms. Foytlin, a mother of six who lives in
Rayne, La. “We’re up for Round Two. Bring it, but you betta go tell ya
Daddy that people with nothing to lose rarely do. See ya in Boston, Bruh.”

The two women are also fighting back. Pro bono lawyers who now represent
them recently filed a motion to get ChemRisk’s action dismissed under a
Massachusetts state law that protects activists from lawsuits intended
to chill advocacy on public policy issues. Such actions are known as
strategic lawsuits against public participation, or Slapp suits.

The paths of the women and ChemRisk converged not long after the 2010
explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Ms.
Savage and her four children, who live in Boston, have spent summers in
Louisiana. At the time of the BP incident, Ms. Foytlin had a part-time
job writing feature articles for her hometown newspaper, which has since
closed.

Both women said they became concerned about the potential health risks
of chemicals released by the rig’s blowout, as well as substances used
by BP to disperse the spill. Ms. Foytlin said she had taken a
BP-sponsored trip to the gulf to observe cleanup activities and returned
with a hacking cough.

“I was having trouble breathing,” she said. “My doctor thought it was
bronchitis, and that’s when I knew what people were saying about the
spill were right.”

In 2011, ChemRisk published a study that found no link between the
volatile chemicals released by the explosion and the health problems
that cleanup workers reported. ChemRisk described its study as
“independent,” but Ms. Savage had her doubts, which intensified after
she read an account in The Wall Street Journal

American antitank missiles supplied to Syrian rebels are playing an
unexpectedly prominent role in shaping the Syrian battlefield, giving
the conflict the semblance of a proxy war between the United States and
Russia, despite President Obama’s express desire to avoid one.

The U.S.-made BGM-71 TOW missiles were delivered under a two-year-old
covert program coordinated between the United States and its allies to
help vetted Free Syrian Army groups in their fight against President
Bashar al-Assad. Now that Russia has entered the war in support of
Assad, they are taking on a greater significance than was originally
intended.

So successful have they been in driving rebel gains in northwestern
Syria that rebels call the missile the “Assad Tamer,” a play on the word
Assad, which means lion. And in recent days they have been used with
great success to slow the Russian-backed offensive aimed at recapturing
ground from the rebels.

I suspect that the Saudis would have delivered the TOW's whether the USA
approved or not. Here's a useful article on the technical aspects of
these weapons that still fail to do anything about Syrian air power.

" By 1935, Du Bois had written his BLACK RECONSTRUCTION IN AMERICA, a
Marxist history of the post-Civil War period, but still had not joined the
CPUSA. With the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Party would do a classic
political back-flip and abandon their radical militancy in opposition to
racism, disgusting labor activists like A. Philip Randolph in the process.
Du Bois is still a revolutionary and dangerous thinker. "

One example of a Civil War historian who has taken the work of DuBois
seriously is Valdosta State professor David Williams. He explicitly follows
in DuBois' footsteps with recent books such as Rich Man's War: Class,
Caste, and Confederate Defeat in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley, and A
People's History of the Civil War: Struggles for the Meaning of Freedom.

[Marxism] Call to international Community from HDP

*Call to the international community*

On October 10th, a Peace Rally that brought together many civil society
organizations, revolutionary unions, and progressive and democratic
parties, among them HDP, was the target of a horrendous attack.
Unfortunately, at least 128 of our fellow citizens were murdered in this
attack, and hundreds wounded. We are concerned that the death toll may
rise, as 48 among the wounded are in critical condition. This attack will
go down as one of the bloodiest in the history of our republic.

There are clear links between the attacks on our party’s rally in Amed on
the 5th of June in 2015, in which five of our citizens died and more than
200 were injured, and the suicide bombing in Suruc on the 20th of July 2015
in which 34 of our citizens were killed during a press conference by youth
from across Turkey in support of Kobane, as well as the suicide bombing on
yesterday’s Peace Rally in Ankara. To date, none of the politicians in
power has been held accountable regarding the previous two attacks. From
the political rhetoric of Prime Minister Davutoglu and the ministers he
appointed, as well as that of President Erdogan, we see no political
accountability with regards to this bloodiest attack in the history of
republic. On the contrary, their public statements show a readiness to
blame the victims of this attack and our party. Such a political tendency
also shows that those responsible for this massacre will also be not
brought to justice, and that even the investigation may be hidden from
public scrutiny. The Prime Minister’s Office has already censored media
coverage of the Ankara Massacre, suggesting that the government will be
protecting not only the agents of this attack, but also those in political
and administrative positions who paved the way for it.

Regarding this chain of massacres, we have a number of expectations and
clear demands from the international community and from political leaders.
In making this call, we wish to underscore that the Ankara massacre and the
aforementioned previous attacks are international in scope, and to make
clear that we see the potential for such events to open the way to regional
insecurity.AKP’s policy of relying on radical groups as proxies, which
began with President Erdogan’s support of, and even channeling through the
intelligence organization MIT, the activities of such groups as ISIS,
Al-Nusra, andAhrar Al-Sham—used particularly against Kurds in Rojava—is at
the heart of today’s tragedy.

President Erdogan aims at the realization of a “Turkey-type presidential
regime” which will render him as the sole political authority in Turkey. In
order to achieve this, Mr. Erdogan needs his party AKP to secure the
majority of the seats in the parliament to form a single-party government.
Pushing HDP under the electoral threshold (10%) stands out as a
straightforward tactic for AKP for this very reason. In order to achieve
this, AKP adopted “escalation of violence” as a strategic approach. In a
context where the ceasefire ended, the attacks against the PKK have
intensified. As the clashes escalated, the death toll of the soldiers were
made a basis for creating a systematic wave of lynchings. AKP led fascist
pogroms targeted HDP buildings as well as Kurdish groups living in the
Western parts of the country on one hand. On the other, Kurdish cities have
been kept under military blockade and curfew. Only in Cizre, 21 civilians
were massacred by the Turkish Armed Forces as well as the police. At a time
when the extreme nationalist and polarizing policies are implemented in
Turkey, the safety of the general elections (November 2015) is a vexing
question to be considered in a serious manner. Our electorates feel under
constant threat in every social space and political activity they attend.
In order to maintain stability in the region, it is crucial to prevent the
devastating effects of the conflict from spreading over a wider geography.
For this very reason, it is extremely important for the international
community to take a firmer stance against President Erdogan and the AKP
government that have already lost legitimacy in the eyes of the public in
Turkey. Hereby, we encourage international community who stand in
solidarity, to extend their condolences directly to the peoples of Turkey--
not to the state representatives who are politically and administratively
responsible from the massacre.

A Kurdish militia in northern Syria has joined forces with Arab rebels,
and their new alliance has been promised fresh weapon supplies by the
United States for an assault on Islamic State forces in Raqqa, a
spokesman said on Monday.

The alliance calling itself the Democratic Forces of Syria includes the
Kurdish YPG militia and Syrian Arab groups, some of which fought
alongside it in a campaign that drove Islamic State from wide areas of
northern Syria earlier this year.

The Arab groups in the new alliance are operating under the name "The
Syrian Arab Coalition" - a grouping which U.S. officials have said would
receive support under a new U.S. strategy aimed at fighting Islamic
State in Syria.

A spokesman for some of the Arab rebels said they were told by
Washington that new weapons were being sent to help them launch a joint
offensive on the city of Raqqa.

"We met the Americans and this has been approved and we have been told
these new arms ... are on their way," said Abu Muazz, a spokesman for
the Raqqa Revolutionaries Front, a grouping of mainly Arab tribal
insurgents who are mostly drawn from the Raqqa area.

He said the group constituted a 3,200-strong, well trained fighting
force which could begin using the weapons within days of their arrival.
It has an additional 600 fighters who are currently wounded, he said.

Dr. Harrington,

I read your article in today's CounterPunch with morbid fascination. It
encapsulates everything I find problematic in the conspiracy-minded
Baathist amen corner that explains that everything that has happened in
Syria as a result of CIA plots, the Mossad or--god knows--maybe the
Freemasons if you read Lyndon Larouche.

You cite a 1982 article by an Israeli journalist named Oded Yinon who
had been a member of the Likud Party and who argued that the Arab
nations surrounding Israel had to go through a dissolution along tribal
and religions lines in order to weaken its enemies. You go on to write
that this article was supposedly echoed in a neocon policy paper from
1996 written by Richard Perle and others.

So where is the dotted line between these policy papers and Syria's
current situation? Did the CIA organize the protests in March 2011 that
were fired upon by Assad's snipers? I know some crackpots around the
Baathist amen corner believe that the snipers were actually agent
provocateurs working for the Mossad or the CIA.

Have you ever read Leon Trotsky? You really need to find some time in
your busy schedule teaching Iberian studies to read his marvelous
history of the 1905 uprising, a dress rehearsal for the socialist
revolution of 1917, in particular the chapter that deals with the
protests led by Father Gapon.

Like poor people everywhere in history, they rise up when they get sick
of the torture, corruption, police spies, hunger, and hopelessness that
marked the reign of Czar Nicholas and the Baathist family dynasty.

All in all, it is quite remarkable that someone who views himself on the
left as surely you must can be capable of writing propaganda for such a
dictatorship.

Duane Filan is a deranged human being who stalks
Marxmail subscribers. He has used the tag Duende in the past, if I
recall correctly. My recommendation is to put him into a spam filter or
else he will harass you mercilessly with unsolicited emails.

 why that?

Don't you feel honored when people take your emanations as model for their
comments, and acknowledge their source? Should he have translated your article
word by word instead of just paraphrasing it?

?? except that I heard of that but can't fathom what that has to do with
Germans.

With a 50% drop in commodity prices from their high point in 2011 causing a
30% fall in the terms of trade, per capita real national income contracting
for five quarters in a row, and GDP growth at an anaemic 2%, no growth is
just as likely as slow growth.

Last year's growth in global trade was 3.6%, almost half of the 7% growth
that was the norm before the onset of the Great Recession in 2008.
