eirigi is probably the most exciting development since the formation of the
IRSP over 30 years ago. While the core of eirigi came out of the Provos
(IRA/SF), they are very keen supporters of Seamus Costello, who left the
Officials to found the IRSP. (The other most well-known IRSP founder being
Bernadette Devlin).

Anyway, here is the address to the 2015 national conference of eirigi in
late November by party chairperson Brian Leeson:

Question 6: Not even the Kurds and the FSA for example, the free Syrian
army?

President Assad: The Kurds are fighting the terrorists with the Syrian
army, in the same areas.

Question 7: But they are also being supported and armed and trained and
backed by the Americans to also launch, to fight …

President Assad: Mainly by the Syrian army, and we have the documents.
We sent them armaments, because they are Syrian citizens, and they
want to fight terrorism. We do the same with many other groups in
Syria, because you cannot send the army to every part of Syria. So, it
is not only the Kurds. Many other Syrians are doing the same.

David L. Phillips is a Columbia University professor who wrote a
Huffington Post "research paper" on Turkey's support for ISIS that was
simply a list of ALLEGATIONS from the Kurdish and anti-AKP press in
Turkey. The semi-literate Assadist propagandist John Wight then wrote an
article for RT.com that claimed that Phillips's article was PROOF of
Turkey-ISIS ties.

Like a bad penny, Phillips turns up again today on alternet.org offering
a speech that Obama should have given the other night. It includes this:
"Close radical mosques and prayer rooms, which are hubs for incitement.
Imams who advocate violent jihad should be detained or deported."

What is a radical mosque? Your guess is as good as mine.

The official count last night was 99 definite seats for the opposition
with outstanding results for 22 seats as yet not irreversible but I did
hear mention of 105 opposition seats more recently. Here below is what
that means once the new National Assembly takes office next month (note
that the existing assembly has the power to act in the interim)./michael

What Could Venezuela’s Opposition Do With a Simple, 3/5, or 2/3 Majority?

*Geoff Ramsey*

While polls in recent weeks have led many analysts to expect Venezuela’s
opposition to gain a majority of the 167 seats in the 2015-2020 National
Assembly, the exact nature of this majority could vary widely. The
Venezuelan Constitution requires different thresholds of votes in order
for the National Assembly to pass certain measures. These thresholds can
be grouped into three categories: those requiring a simple majority,
those requiring a “qualified majority” of three-fifths of the Assembly,
and those requiring an absolute two-thirds majority.

With a *simple majority *of more than 50 percent of the National
Assembly (84 members), the opposition can:

 * Issue a vote of no confidence in the Vice President and cabinet
   Ministers
 * Investigate and question public officials
 * Have a deciding role in the national budget and debt debates
 * Approve an amnesty law
 * Select the members of the Supreme Court of Justice
 * Approve laws on health, justice and basic goods
 * Name ambassadors
 * Convene national referendums on matters of special importance and
amendments to the Constitution (with National Assembly approval)
 * Attribute to states or municipalities certain issues that currently
   fall under national competence
 * Authorize the President to leave the country (for 5 days)
 * Elect the President of the National Assembly, and its two Vice
   Presidents
 * Indict congressmen

With a *qualified majority* of 3/5 of the National Assembly (101
members), the opposition can:

 * Decide that a vote of no confidence in the Vice President or cabinet
Ministers should lead to their dismissal, and subsequently dismiss them
 * Authorize presidential decrees allowing expanded executive authority
(so-called “enabling laws” or “leyes habilitantes”
 * Appoint members of the National Electoral Council (CNE)
 * Remove members of the CNE, provided it is backed by a ruling by the
   Supreme Court

With an *absolute majority* of 2/3 the National Assembly (112 members),
the opposition can:

 * Remove Supreme Court justices in cases of gross misconduct
 * Subject any bills under discussion in the National Assembly to
   approval by referendum
 * Convene a National Constituent Assembly, as well as a recall
   referendum for President Maduro
 * Submit international treaties, conventions or agreements to referendums
 * Pass and modify any draft organic law (laws which determine the
fundamental political principles of a government)

Joan Roelof wrote a comment yesterday on my post about Chester’s
Zumbarg: “I wonder if you know about Camp Woodland. It was a major
influence in my life.” As it turns out the book on the Catskills that I
had excerpted for that post had a couple of pages on Camp Woodland just
before the Chester’s passage. Camp Wo-Chi-Ca, which stood for Workers
Children Camp, was based in New Jersey and like Camp Woodland catered to
the children of leftists, especially CP’ers. Three years ago I blogged
about Fred Baker’s experiences at Wo-Chi-Ca and perhaps I will get the
opportunity to interview Joan Roelof before too long as part of my video

Rick Sterling, you wrote in today's CounterPunch:

"A Columbia University researcher lists proof of Turkish collaboration
with ISIS here."

The word here links to a Huffington Post article
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-l-phillips/research-paper-isis-turke_b_6128950.html)
that says nothing about PROOF. It is in fact a list of ALLEGATIONS. Both
you and fellow Baathist amen corner member John Wight have both made
claims that the Columbia professor did not even make himself. In fact
his article ends with this disclaimer:

"Author's Note: Information presented in this paper is offered without
bias or endorsement."

Do you and Wight really think that a video with guys in black shirts and
long hair (http://odatv.com/vid_video.php?id=8D3C0) "proves" that they
were ISIS members? Maybe they were Metallica fans instead.

Also, I would be a bit more wary about citing David L. Phillips, the
Columbia professor. Aren't you aware that he was an adviser to the State
Department planning committee working on a post-Saddam Iraq in 2002?
Phillips was very close to Christopher Hitchens ideologically, seeing
the Kurds as a critical element in overthrowing Saddam. He is also the
Executive Director of the Elie Wiesel Foundation.

One of the saddest things about the Baathist amen corner is its utter
disregard for the truth. Do you think that it strengthens your cause by
writing lies? Maybe that's the only route open to someone who is trying
to make Bashar al-Assad a knight in shining armor when he is in fact a
blood-soaked dictator who has much more in common with Suharto, Pinochet
or Mobutu.

I like the term amen corner because it evokes a congregation saying
"amen" to a preacher. I was searching for a term that could best express
the blind loyalty that a John Wight or a Pepe Escobar have toward Assad
and this was the best I could come up with. Number two below covers it.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/amen+corner

amen corner
n.
1.
a. A place in a church reserved for persons leading congregational
responses.

b. A group of ardent worshipers in a church.

2. Informal A group of uncritical supporters of a leader, party, or
policy, especially a controversial one.

Excellent piece by my friend Liam O Ruairc on Connolly, imperialism and
anti-imperialism.

>Connolly developed a number of innovative theoretical positions regarding
the relationship between marxism and anti-imperialism; positions heretical
to both conventional forms of Irish nationalism and the form of socialism
espoused by the Second International prevalent during his life time. He was
among the first to combine the politics of anti-imperialist nationalism
with international marxism in the colonial arena. His fundamental teaching
is that the struggle for national liberation from imperialism is not
opposed to the struggle for socialism but and integral and necessary part
of it. This is why, in his view, “The cause of labour is the cause of
Ireland, the cause of Ireland is the cause of labour. They cannot be
dissevered” (Connolly 1988, 175). Why are the two interdependent? . . .

Between September 2014 and January, Kobanê was under siege from the IS, and

A few days ago Louis posted an interesting piece about Chinese investment
in Nigeria.

I was sick a couple of days and ended up watching TV a lot during the day.
One of the things I watched was a travel show about Namibia. A bit
depressing - a couple of decades after 'freedom' massive poverty and
inequality remains the order of the day. But the show also had a few bits
about Chinese investment there; the Chinese seem to be major outside
investors in Namibia.

They are also now significant investors in the Pacific. This presents
Australia and NZ with a few interesting contradictions. On the one hand,
both countries had rigid white immigration policies directed primarily
against the Chinese, were hostile to China in the Cold War yet now have
vital trade links with China.

China, for instance, is now NZ major export market - it even overtook
Australia a year or two back in that regard. China is a more important
trade partner than the United States for both Australia and New Zealand.
And with a substantial wealthy class and a huge middle class (in straight
numerical terms) China is likely to remain a key export destination for
what bourgeois economists call value-added export goods from Australia and
NZ.

Yet, historically, we have really close ties with the United States, going
back over 100 years, but becoming even more strong during WW2 and the Cold
War. The NZ ruling class tends to be a bit less ra-ra for the US than
Australia, but the ruling classes on both sides of the Tasman are in a bit
of a bind. On the one hand, historically allied with the US in
Asia-Pacific, now more profitable links with China while at the same time
wary of Chinese investment and influence in Pacific island countries.

You'd almost feel sorry for the Chinese. They were hated by the US ruling
class when they were 'communist' and they're hated, possibly even more, now
they're very successful capitalists.

Veteran workplace union activist and Marxist Don Franks addressed a meeting
organised by the Workers Educational Association in Christchurch (New
Zealand) this month two years ago on the way forward for workers and union
activists.

Don was a militant union delegate in one of the big car plants in
Wellington in the 1970s. After it closed down in the 1980s he became a
cleaner for the rest of his working life, as well as being active in the
cleaners' union. He's probably the most experience shopfloor militant in
the country, albeit recently retired.
