The Geopolitics of the Eurasian Economic Union

The deal signed last week by Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan to create a 
Eurasian Economic Union is yet another countermeasure against US and 
European attempts to isolate Russia. By moving towards closer economic 
cooperation, Russia hopes to build, piecemeal if necessary, a common 
Eurasian economic space that will ultimately rival the US and Europe in 
terms of economic influence.


However, the ultimate goal of this sort of cooperation goes far beyond 
just economic power. Rather, Russia is the key facilitator of a series 
of multilateral arrangements created in the last fifteen years that 
Putin (and much of the world) hopes will ultimately move the world 
towards a multipolar global order. While this is undoubtedly on the 
agenda for Russia and its ally Belarus, Kazakhstan is a complicated 
partner as it is deeply involved with the West in terms of business, 
investment, education, and a number of other critical areas.

A new Israel-friendly economic union opens its doors

Upcoming high-level talks between Israel and Russia will provide an 
opportunity to move forward the idea of forging a partnership between 
Israel and the Eurasian Economic Union.

dialogue between Israel and Russia regarding dramatic transformations in

Two films are playing in New York theaters that go straight for the 
jugular vein of capitalism. One is a French narrative film titled “The 
Measure of a Man” that opens tomorrow at Lincoln Plaza Cinema and the 
Metrograph (a new downtown theater committed to noncommercial film). The 
other is “Class Divide”, a documentary about gentrification in Chelsea 
that opened yesterday at the IFC Center. In addition to packing a 
powerful anti-capitalist message, they are fine art directed by 
directors with outstanding track records. So they come with the highest 
recommendation.

It is well known that your accusations of racism against Weir are unfounded and 
false. This entire issue is based on guilt by association and conjecture. The

people about themselves and their events.

In an interview
, Amena
El-Ashkar, a Palestinian refugee from Lebanon, states that she refused to
speak at Stanford University after students told her she could not express
her views about Israel.

I’m coming here to say
 that
Israel has no right to exist. [The students] said we could discuss this
kind of thing with each other, but not in front of American people…

Ms. Ashkar’s talk is one of several on a national “North American Nakba Tour
,”
a tour designed to educate Americans about the enduring effects Israel’s
mass expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland in 1948. Ms. Ashkar and
Mariam “Umm Akram” Fathallah, an 86-year-old survivor of the expulsion, had
planned to speak at Stanford University on 6 April 2016. Ms. Ashkar was
born and raised in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, where her
ancestors were banished during the expulsion, or Nakba, of 1948.

Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), which was hosting the
talk at Stanford, told Ms. Ashkar that their existence as a campus
organization depends on not challenging Israel’s “right to exist,” and told
her not to address the topic. Ms. Ashkar refused to censor herself and was
shocked that an organization named “Students for Justice in Palestine”
would insist on such a requirement. Although some of the students admitted
to sharing Ms. Ashkar’s views, the students cited the hostile
administrative climate at Stanford to justify censoring their guest.

I told them, it is a fight
,
and any fight is going to have sacrifices. In Lebanon, we have Palestinian
clubs…which do not take funds from the University. We pay it ourselves.

Stanford SJP released a false statement
 attributing
the cancellation to concerns about Alison Weir, a pro-Palestinian
commentator who was in the audience. Ms. Weir was subject to widely disputed
 — and
widely rejected  — accusations
of anti-Semitism by other Palestinian rights organizers last summer,
revealing deep-seated divisions within the Palestinian rights movement.
Although Tour organizers had informally asked Ms. Weir to give Ms. Ashkar
public speaking advice, and Ms. Weir had offered the Tour some generic
informational materials — none of which are authored by Weir — Ms. Weir is
not one of the national organizers of the North American Nakba Tour and was
not a planned speaker. Weir offered to sell copies of her own writings at
the event to raise money for the Tour, but complied when Stanford students
asked her not to sell them. The statement alleges that Ms. Weir refused to

We, the students of the American University of Beirut, are opening this 
petition in support of Professor Steven Salaita; we are deeply concerned 
Professor Salaita is once again being wrongfully targeted for his 
advocacy on behalf of Palestinian self-determination. Professor Salaita 
had been unanimously recommended for the full-time position of Director 
of the Center for American Studies and Research by an interdepartmental 
search committee. However, the job search for the Director position was 
abruptly cancelled by President Fadlo Khuri on March 30th, 2016. Khuri 
cited ‘procedural irregularities’ within the search committee as the 
reason for this cancellation without initiating an internal investigation.
