State-sanctioned backlash against the movement for Palestinian human rights
has reached a new low: Gov. Cuomo just signed a McCarthyite executive order
requiring state agencies to divest from organizations that support the
Palestinian call to boycott companies profiting from, or cultural
institutions complicit in, Israel's oppression of the Palestinian
people. Furthermore, the order requires the creation of a publicly

Boycott is a time-honored tool of communities across the globe. Cuomo’s
move is blatantly unconstitutional and is shamelessly designed to attack
the movement for Palestinian human rights.

Currently being featured on HBO, “All the Way” derives its title from
LBJ’s 1964 campaign slogan “All the Way with LBJ”. That year SDS urged a
vote for Johnson but under the slogan “Part of the Way with LBJ”. For
some former SDS’ers like Carl Davidson, you can expect the slogan to be
dusted off and used once again for Hillary Clinton with Donald Trump
being the scariest Republican candidate since Barry Goldwater—or was it
Ronald Reagan, I can’t remember.

(Chomsky is an idiot.)

Q: We’re seeing at the moment a mirrored rise of populist movements on
both the Left and the Right. The right-wing movements are taking on an
increasingly racist and neo-fascist character. To what extent, and for
what reasons, does the Left bear responsibility for the rise in
popularity of these extreme and dangerous forces?

A: It’s responsible in a number of respects. In the last generation the
Left in the United States, Britain and much of the West has been driven
by issues which are extremely important but are not class issues —
identity politics basically. Women’s movements, gay rights, Black Lives
Matter: all these things are extremely important, but they divert the
Left away from the fundamental class issues which are being picked up by
the Right, like Trump and elsewhere. That’s a real failure, and it’s
connected with the attack on the labour movement and the decline of the
labour movement. Here’s where maybe Corbyn’s hopeful, if he can fight
off [those] that are trying to destroy him — from the Guardian all the
way over.

She was also the wife of a Teamster official; in fact I vaguely remember a
couple years ago someone pointed out (maybe on another list) that her own
history usually got lost in favor of the brief mention - however important
- of the husband's affiliation. I think the Militant ran something on the

[Marxism] Viola Liuzzo

Later today I will be blogging about the HBO film "All the Way" that
stars Bryan Cranston as LBJ. In doing some background reading on LBJ in
Kenneth O'Reilly's superlative "Nixon's Piano", I ran across the name of
Viola Liuzzo, a woman from Detroit who was killed by the KKK in 1965
while transporting marchers back to their home from the Selma to
Montgomery freedom march. Out of curiosity, I checked what Wikipedia had
to say about here. It really gives you a sense of the sea change that
has taken place in the American working class.

---

Liuzzo was born Viola Fauver Gregg on April 11, 1925, in the small town
of California, Pennsylvania, the elder daughter of Eva Wilson, a
teacher, and Heber Ernest Gregg, a coal miner and World War I veteran.
He left school in the eighth grade, but taught himself to read. Her
mother, Eva Wilson Gregg, had a teaching certificate from the University
of Pittsburgh. The couple had one other daughter, Rose Mary, in 1930.
While on the job, Heber's right hand was blown off in a mine explosion,
and, during the Great Depression, the Greggs became solely dependent on
Eva’s income. Work was very hard to come by for Mrs. Gregg, as she could
only pick up sporadic, short-term, teaching positions. The family
descended further into poverty and decided to move Georgia to
Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Eva Gregg found a teaching position, when
Viola was six.[4]

The family was very poor and lived in one-room shacks with no running
water. The schools Liuzzo attended did not have adequate supplies and
the teachers were too busy to give extra attention to children in need.
Because the family moved so often, Liuzzo never began and ended the
school year in the same place. Having spent much of her childhood and
adolescence poor in Tennessee, Viola experienced the segregated nature
of the South firsthand. This would eventually have a powerful impact on
Liuzzo’s activism. It was during her formative years that Liuzzo
realized the unjustness of segregation and racism, as she and her
family, in similar conditions of great poverty, were still afforded
social privilege and amenities denied to African Americans under the Jim
Crow laws.[5] Although her parents argued against it, Liuzzo dropped out
of school in the tenth grade. She and her father often argued about her
social activities and, at the age of 16, Liuzzo ran away and married a
much older man. The marriage lasted only one day.

Bodyguard to Assad’s wife killed by anti-regime Alawites, Syrian media
and attackers say

Published June 6th, 2016 - 11:10 GMT

http://www.albawaba.com/loop/bodyguard-wife-assad-killed-car-bomb-848826

Multiple Syrian and other media outlets are reporting that Alaa
Makhlouf-the personal bodyguard to Syrian first lady Asma al-Assad-was
killed via a car bomb on Saturday, June 4th by members of the Free
Alawite Movement. Syria Mubasher and Baladi appear to have been the
first outlets to break the story, citing regime sources and the Free
Alawite Movement’s Facebook page respectively.
“We’ve killed Alaa Makhlouf, bodyguard to the wife of Bashar the beast,”
the group declared coldly on Facebook after the attack. The attack took
place in central Damascus. Rumors of a possible assassination against
Makhlouf had been circulating for three months, Baladi claims.
The assassination is a blow to members of Syrian president Bashar
al-Assad’s inner circle. While many in his family remain alive, some of
those closest to him have been killed over the course of the harrowing
five-year-long civil war that has left over 400,000 dead.
The fact that the attack was carried out by Assad’s fellow Alawites
shows the division within that community. Many Alawites remain loyal to
the president, but some have supported the uprising since it began in
2011.
Makhlouf was from the village of Qardahah in the Latakia governorate-an
Assad stronghold. He had served as Asma al-Assad’s bodyguard for an
unknown number of years

(I find myself utterly captivated by these kinds of articles even if I
can't understand a single word.)

NY Times, June 7 2016
No Escape From Black Holes? Stephen Hawking Points to a Possible Exit
By DENNIS OVERBYE

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — “A black hole has no hair.”

That mysterious, koan-like statement by the theorist and legendary
phrasemaker John Archibald Wheeler of Princeton has stood for half a
century as one of the brute pillars of modern physics.

It describes the ability of nature, according to classical gravitational
equations, to obliterate most of the attributes and properties of
anything that falls into a black hole, playing havoc with science’s
ability to predict the future and tearing at our understanding of how
the universe works.

Now it seems that statement might be wrong.

Recently Stephen Hawking, who has spent his entire career battling a
form of Lou Gehrig’s disease, wheeled across the stage in Harvard’s
hoary, wood-paneled Sanders Theater to do battle with the black hole. It
is one of the most fearsome demons ever conjured by science, and one
partly of his own making: a cosmic pit so deep and dense and endless
that it was long thought that nothing — not even light, not even a
thought — could ever escape.

But Dr. Hawking was there to tell us not to be so afraid.

In a paper published to be published this week in Physical Review
Letters, Dr. Hawking and his colleagues Andrew Strominger of Harvard and
Malcolm Perry of Cambridge University in England say they have found a
clue pointing the way out of black holes.

“They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought,” Dr. Hawking
said in his famous robot voice, now processed through a synthesizer. “If
you feel you are trapped in a black hole, don’t give up. There is a way
out.”

Black holes are the most ominous prediction of Einstein’s general theory
of relativity: Too much matter or energy concentrated in one place would
cause space to give way, swallowing everything inside like a magician’s
cloak.

An eternal prison was the only metaphor scientists had for these
monsters until 40 years ago, when Dr. Hawking turned black holes upside
down — or perhaps inside out. His equations showed that black holes
would not last forever. Over time, they would “leak” and then explode in
a fountain of radiation and particles.

Ever since, the burning question in physics has been: When the black
hole finally goes, does it give up the secrets of everything that fell in?

Dr. Hawking’s calculation was, and remains, hailed as a breakthrough in
understanding the connection between gravity and quantum mechanics,
between the fabric of space and the subatomic particles that live inside
it — the large and the small in the universe.

But there was a hitch. By Dr. Hawking’s estimation, the radiation coming
out of the black hole as it fell apart would be random. As a result,
most of the “information” about what had fallen in — all of the
attributes and properties of the things sucked in, whether elephants or
donkeys, Volkswagens or Cadillacs — would be erased.

In a riposte to Einstein’s famous remark that God does not play dice,
Dr. Hawking said in 1976, “God not only plays dice with the universe,
but sometimes throws them where they can’t be seen.”

But his calculation violated a tenet of modern physics: that it is
always possible in theory to reverse time, run the proverbial film
backward and reconstruct what happened in, say, the collision of two
cars or the collapse of a dead star into a black hole.

The universe, like a kind of supercomputer, is supposed to be able to
keep track of whether one car was a green pickup truck and the other was
a red Porsche, or whether one was made of matter and the other
antimatter. These things may be destroyed, but their “information” —
their essential physical attributes — should live forever.

In fact, the information seemed to be lost in the black hole, according
to Dr. Hawking, as if part of the universe’s memory chip had been
erased. According to this theorem, only information about the mass,
charge and angular momentum of what went in would survive.

Nothing about whether it was antimatter or matter, male or female, sweet
or sour.

A war of words and ideas ensued. The information paradox, as it is
known, was no abstruse debate, as Dr. Hawking pointed out from the stage
of the Sanders Theater in April. Rather, it challenged foundational
beliefs about what reality is and how it works.

If the rules break down in black holes, they may be lost in other places
as well, he warned. If foundational information disappears into a gaping
maw,

A draft federal-government study obtained by the CBC under an Access to
Information request, prepared by the government trend-forecasting office Policy
Horizons Canada, starkly makes the case that oil may be on the verge of
becoming almost worthless.

The researchers analyzed worldwide pricing and technology and policy trends
that are driving the price of non-fossil electricity sources downward at a far
faster pace than expected – along with surprisingly rapid technology-driven
decreases in the price of grid-level energy storage and alternative-energy
vehicles, manufacturing and heating. They found that we could be much closer
than we think to an era when renewable and alternative-energy sources become
significantly cheaper than fossil fuels.

If Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull really is a feminist, as
