(Since when was Egypt a "vocal opponent" of Assad?)

I think the article makes clear they mean under the elected MB
government. Fro the time of Sisi's bloody coup in mid-2013, Sisi and
Assad have been in alliance ("tacit", the article says). The main
difference in the last year or so is that Sisi's verbal support for
Assad has translated into sending actual military forces.

This photo-story appeared in the online version of the New York Times this
morning. One of the photos in particular struck me. It was a photo of Cuban
military personnel standing on the side of the road waiting for Fidel’s ashes
to pass by. Hundreds-of-thousands of people did the same. But what really
struck me was that the military personnel were completely unarmed! In fact, in
all the news photos of the masses of Cuban people out in the streets to morn
the passing of Fidel you see no armed military or police; no armored tanks with
sharp-shooters on their gun turrets as we’ve seen on the streets of Baltimore
and on the plains of North Dakota! In fact, there has never been such a scene
here in the U.S where even the local police are armed to the teeth with
military-grade armor and weapons! Where else in the world can you see
hundreds-of-thousands, maybe millions, of people out in the streets with no
armed police or military necessary. Even the vehicle carrying the ashes of
Fidel is open and unarmed! These images speak for themselves! I guess the Cuban
governmental “dictatorship” doesn’t feel the need to bare arms against its own
people!

Sons of executed spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg ask Obama to exonerate their
mother
By Joe Heim December 1, 2016

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/sons-of-executed-spies-julius-and-ethel-rosenberg-ask-obama-to-exonerate-mom/2016/12/01/a654c7ca-b7e6-11e6-b8df-600bd9d38a02_story.html?utm_term=.471de03fbea8

On the day Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were scheduled to face the electric chair
as convicted spies in June 1953, their sons, Michael and Robert, then 10 and 6,
were told to go to a friend’s house and play baseball until dark.

When they walked back in the house that evening, Michael asked family members
if his parents’ lives had been spared. When he didn’t get a direct answer, he
knew his worst fears had been realized.

It was just days after the two boys had protested at the White House and handed
a letter to a security guard asking the president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, for
clemency. The request hadn’t been granted.

On Thursday morning, the two brothers — who took the last name of their adopted
family, Meeropol — returned to the White House. Now 73 and 69, they approached
the northwest gate with a letter addressed to President Obama asking that he
issue a statement exonerating their mother, who they say was wrongly convicted
and sentenced.

“We are giving the United States government the chance to acknowledge the
injustice done to our mother,” Robert Meeropol said to a group of reporters and
onlookers. “This is a test to see if our government has the courage and
commitment to true justice to acknowledge the terrible wrong it did to her and
to us.”

“After 40 years of research and struggle, we are sharing with President Obama
the fruits of that struggle and once again asking for presidential action,”
said his brother, Michael.

“This time we are not merely advocates for our family, but for our country. It
is never too late to learn from the mistakes of the past,” he said.

Citing evidence that was unsealed last year, the brothers say their mother was
not a spy and that she was convicted based on perjured testimony and judicial
misconduct.

“Our claim is that the trial of Ethel Rosenberg was a perversion of justice,”
Robert Meeropol said. “The FBI files show that my mother was only arrested to
use as a lever against her husband.”

The Rosenbergs were arrested in 1950 and charged with conspiring to provide
technical information about building an atomic bomb to the Soviet Union.

Ethel Rosenberg’s brother, David Greenglass, who was working on the top-secret
Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, had been
arrested earlier that year. He told investigators that his brother-in-law was a
Soviet agent who had recruited him to steal classified information.

Initially, Greenglass told a grand jury that his sister was not involved in any
espionage activities, but he later changed that story and said she typed up
notes for her husband about the information Greenglass provided. That reversed
testimony led to the charges against Ethel.

Many years later, Greenglass said he implicated his sister to protect himself
and his wife.

The Rosenbergs’ trial began on March 6, 1951. They were convicted on March 29
and sentenced to death a few days later. Opposition to the sentence came from
figures as varied as Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso and Pope Pius XII, who
petitioned Eisenhower to spare the couple’s lives.

Michael Meeropol said Thursday that he remembers taking part in the White House
protest 63 years ago and seeing a broad coalition of supporters and signs that
said such things as “The electric chair can’t kill the doubts in the Rosenberg
case.”

He also remembers his brother asking, “When are we going to see mommy and
daddy?” for many weeks after their parents died.

The brothers have fought for years to clear the Rosenbergs’ names. Although
they admit that their father was a spy for the Soviet Union, they do not
believe he passed along secrets about the atomic bomb, the crime for which he
was tried and executed.

Their mother, they say, was not guilty of spying. They dismiss assertions made
by some historians of their mother’s guilt as “absolutely absurd.”

(Since when was Egypt a "vocal opponent" of Assad?)

NY Times, Dec. 3 2016
Egypt and Turkey Soften Positions on Syria, Benefiting Assad
By ANNE BARNARD

BEIRUT, Lebanon — The Syrian government, flush with pivotal battlefield
gains and bolstered by support from Iran and Russia, is finding itself
the beneficiary of an evolving regional realignment spurred by the war
in Syria.

Egypt and Turkey, countries that were once vocal opponents of Syria’s
president, Bashar al-Assad, have, to varying degrees, softened their
positions. Egypt, the region’s most populous Sunni country and wary of
Iran’s Shiite theocracy, has made its tacit, increasing support of the
Syrian government public for the first time. And Turkey, a Sunni
regional power, is reshaping the Syrian battlefield by edging closer to
Russia and dampening its longtime support for rebels fighting Mr. Assad.

The shifts come at a volatile time as countries in the Middle East long
aligned with the United States are hedging their bets and looking to
Moscow for support as Russian intervention transforms the conflict in Syria.

The maneuvering comes as Russia asserts itself across the region to a
degree not seen since Soviet times, partnering with an increasingly
ambitious Iran. Longstanding American alliances with Turkey, Egypt and
Saudi Arabia are frayed, and face new uncertainty with the election of
Donald J. Trump, whose foreign policy remains largely undefined, except
for an avowed eagerness to shake things up.

Egypt, which has seen its influence wane, is seeking allies and
relevance wherever it can find them, even if that means shelving
concerns about Iran.

While Russia’s goal seems to be to expand its influence and pave the way
for the international rehabilitation of Mr. Assad’s government, the
scrambling of alliances remains in motion and the results unclear. The
new relationships are messy, contradictory works in progress.

“In today’s regional context, this tactical hedging by countries on
multiple fronts is likely to continue and may accelerate under a Trump
administration,” said Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Center for
American Progress in Washington.

Egypt and Turkey both provide examples of hedging, testing realignments
but not jumping in with both feet.

Turkey has reached a potentially game-changing understanding with Russia
in northern Syria — slackening support for besieged rebels in the
divided city of Aleppo in exchange for a sphere of influence along its
border — but continues to push the deal’s boundaries politically and
militarily. And Egypt is diverging from its traditional allies in some
ways, by splitting from Saudi Arabia on Syria; it remains financially
dependent on the kingdom and hopes to mend fences with the United States
under Mr. Trump.

Egypt, Mr. Katulis said, is “seeking to signal that it has an
independent perspective and position” on the Syrian conflict and on
regional policy, balancing the United States and Russia, not aligning
entirely with either the Gulf Arab states or Iran.

The emerging “Sisi doctrine,” named for President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi
of Egypt, said Michael Wahid Hanna, a senior fellow at the Century
Foundation, a New York-based research institute, is “rigid anti-Islamism
and rigid anti-militancy and a very vocal support for nation states and
sovereignty.”

Those positions are congruent with Mr. Assad’s. However, they diverge
from those of Saudi Arabia, which has long been one of Egypt’s main
financial lifelines, supplying aid worth tens of billions of dollars.

Mr. Sisi is also increasingly wary of Turkey. He sees the recent defeat
of a coup attempt against Mr. Erdogan’s Islamist government as “the
birth of a religious state in Europe,” he told Mr. Katulis in July
during a two-hour interview for a forthcoming report on United States
policy in Egypt.

Yet, Mr. Katulis said, the Egyptian president also made clear that he
remained suspicious of Iran’s Shiite brand of Islamism despite its
alignment with Mr. Assad and opposition to Turkey in Syria.

But for now, Mr. Sisi seems to be putting concerns about Iran on the
back burner and focusing more on Sunni Islamist movements, which he sees
as a bigger threat. And lending support to Syria helps a weakened Egypt
evoke its glory days as the leader of Arab nationalism in the 1960s.

Mr. Sisi’s emphasis on state sovereignty, supporting Arab states against
insurgents, is also a major boon to the Syrian government’s quest for
legitimacy, said Kamal Alam, a visiting fellow at the Royal United
Services Institute in London and Levant Consultant for the Hoplite Group.

One Marxist economist who had read and digested Volume 3 was Henryk
Grossman. As a result, he was able to present a coherent theory of
capitalist crises based on the law, showing the connection between the
tendency of the rate of profit to fall and the countertendencies; the
relation between the rate of profit and the mass of profit; and thus the
relation between profit and crises. But his thesis, as Rick Kuhn says
in his excellent biography of Grossman, was “an economic theory without
a political home”. Grossman also shows in his work, The law of
accumulation being also a theory of crises, that those who followed an
‘anarchy of production’ theory of crises could not really provide a
coherent argument for regular and recurring slumps or breakdowns
inherent in capitalist production. Indeed, just remove competition and
allow monopoly to regulate and the anarchy can be controlled, suggested
Hilferding or Kautsky.

I have no idea whether Michael Roberts gets into this or not but I sort
of doubt it. Grossman did believe that the overproduction of capital was
responsible for a declining rate of profit but, anticipating David
Harvey, saw displacement geographically as a way of offsetting it.

In Grossman's “The Law of Accumulation and Collapse of the Capitalist
System”, there's a chapter titled “Restoring Profitability through World
Market Domination.” Grossman writes:

"In effect price formation on the world market is governed by the same
principles that apply under a conceptually isolated capitalism. The
latter anyway is merely a theoretical model; the world market, as a
unity of specific national economies, is something real and concrete.
Today the prices of the most important raw materials and final products
are determined internationally, in the world market. We are no longer
confronted by a national level of prices but a level determined on the
world market. In a conceptually isolated capitalism entrepreneurs with
an above average technology make a surplus profit (a rate of profit
above the average) when they sell their commodities at socially average
prices. Likewise on the world market, the technologically advanced
countries make a surplus profit at the cost of the technologically less
developed ones."

I deal with this at length here:

And the answer is no the link still doesn't work.

But if you go to the Washington Post site open its local section and
scroll down the articles click on load more twice
you will reach the article.

It is worth doing particularly as one of the sons seems to be a contributor
to the list
