[Marxism] National Women's March politics

Mainstream and liberal media are resurrecting the "identity politics" debate (i.e. "Hillary should have told those minorities to piss off," and "why don't you talk about white workers?") Fact of the matter is that the NWM DOES talk class. See: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/584086c7be6594762f5ec56e/t/5877e24a29687f9613e546ff/1484251725855/WMW+Guiding+Vision+%26+Definition+of+Principles.pdf Of course as with every issue it's mostly talked about in "progressive" abstractions. But it's there. P.S. In discussing this controversy with a friend, she pointed me to a great article by Sara Salem counterposing Marxist-feminist intersectionality to neoliberal diversity politics: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1350506816643999 _ Full posting guidelines at: http://www.marxmail.org/sub.htm Set your options at: http://lists.csbs.utah.edu/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com

Re: [Marxism] origins of the criminal Assad dynasty

In some ways, it reminds me of Mexico's former ruling party, the PRI. (Even the name - Institutional Revolutionary Party - evokes similar thoughts.) As Syria is a "frontline" state, bordering on Israel, until the collapse of the Soviet Union Mexico was the only underdeveloped country with a major border on an advanced capitalist country. As with Assad, Lazaro Cardenas - the founder of the PRI - came to power at a time of enormous struggle and crisis (principally the oil workers strike). Forced to make concessions to these striking workers, he also represented a rightward movement in Mexican politics. As with the Assad dynasty, the PRI instituted vast nationalization and state economic intervention. (I remember when my former wife, 6 month old daughter and I went to Mexico in the early '70s and our daughter got sick in a small, out-of-the-way village. We took her to a state run clinic and her treatment was totally free. No such services any longer!) Also, as with Assad, the PRI played the nationalist card, first and foremost by (verbally) supporting the Castro regime. The article points out that the Assad approach was not limited to Syria, that it was part of the approach of regimes throughout the region and in Africa also. So was it in Mexico and other Latin American countries. John Reimann -- "No one is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them." Une Vie. Willy Gianinazzi. Review. https://tendancecoatesy.wordpress.com/2017/01/20/andre-gorz-une-vie-willy-gianinazzi-review/ "Over the last few weeks Socialist Party contender for the Presidential 'primaries', Benoît Hamon, has raised the idea of a "revenu universal d'existence' (Basic Income) paid to all. Hearing this many people would have remembered the name of André Gorz. The Vienna born but France based journalist, social theorist, and green socialist activist, whose influence extended far beyond the francophone world, promoted this idea from the 1990s onwards. That is, "a guarantee of sufficient income, independent of the duration of labour (which can only decrease), and perhaps independent of work itself".
