Glad to hear that Tristan. There is an interesting meeting called Seattle
Socialism or some such happening next week (April 2) that combines the
efforts of DSA, SAlt, ISO and the new independent mayoral campaign of
Nikkita Oliver and the also new Peoples Party to hold a conference on,
well, Seattle Socialism.

I don't know! I'll let you know what happens. But it turns out that up at
UW, spontaneously, tabling to build the event *also* became joint tabling
and building between various socialist groups. Originally a big Oliver for
Mayor meeting conflicted with the conference but that was worked out by
having Oliver speak at the conference and Kshama Sawant speak at Oliver's
campaign event later that same day.

[Marxism] Something serious unfolding in Belarus

I have noticed, there's nothing on recent events in Belarus on Marxmail.
However, there are serious reasons to watch Belarus closely, as it may
become another "weak link".

Recently, the people of Belarus have been protesting the unemployment
tax
(https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/16/belarus-fine-unemployed-social-parasite-law).

The government responded with harsh repressions. Hundreds of protesters
have been arrested.
Hundreds more were arrested today, after trying to celebrate the Freedom
Day in the streets of Minsk
(http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-39393351).

However, opposition activists from Belarus whom I follow on social media
are not intimidated. According to them, the population by and large is
sympathetic towards the protests and anti-government sentiment only grow.

This may well be another revolution in Europe and maybe a war, as Putin
will hardly tolerate another mess on Russian border.

It says my comment has to be approved...

The DSA needs a new statement on Syria, we haven't had one in years.
This is being discussed and will specifically make it clear not only who
we stand in solidarity with but also address the disinformation campaign
by some on the left, meaning associating with an event like this is
counter to where the DSA stands nationally.

[Marxism] Fwd: The Romance of American Communism | Louis Proyect: The Unrepentant Marxist

Published in 1974, Vivian Gornick’s “The Romance of American Communism”
falls squarely within this “revisionist” tendency and is a counterpart
to such films. The book is basically a collection of interviews with
ex-CPers across the entire USA woven together in a New Journalism style
that was popular at the time.

As a red diaper baby born in 1935, Gornick was much more a feminist
activist than a student radical. Her goal in writing such a book was to
allow ex-CP’ers to tell their stories, warts and all. Obviously
determined to make their political work seem rooted in the American
experience and not a virtual spy network as argued by the current crop
of anti-Communists such as Harvey Klehr, she interviewed people who to a
large degree never repudiated their past life even though they readily
admitted that they were dogmatic, manipulative and frequently unethical.
