I have felt that I should write something about the events of March 15th
here in Christchurch, but I've struggled to think what to write that
actually adds anything that people don't already know. I can make a couple
of comments on things a few politicians have said.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel came out saying that in her years in politics in
Christchurch (a Labour member of Parliament for working class Christchurch
East for 23 years, Cabinet Minister from 2002-2008, followed by mayor since
2013), she had never been aware of far right political activity in
Christchurch. Anyone who has the slightest political awareness in
Christchurch knows that this city has been a key centre of organising for
the far right in New Zealand. This is not to suggest that the far right is
strong, it hasn't been and the perpetrator has turned out to be from
Australia, but the dishonesty of claiming Christchurch to have been free of
white supremacist politics was quite brazen.

Jacinda Ardern, current Prime Minister at the head of a Labour-led
coalition government, has said all the right things - that "we" aren't
intolerant, blah blah". But she hasn't pointed out that New Zealand has had
troops continuously deployed in the Middle East since 1954. There have been
NZ combat troops in Afghanistan since 2001 and she's re-extended the
deployment. They were recently found to have committed an atrocity against
a group of villagers, but oh, the "inquiry" found that it was one rogue
soldier who's since left the military. When our army are fighting Muslims
(jihadis, insurgents, terrorists), 'protecting' Israel from Muslims, doing
reconstruction work for Muslims who are seen as incapable of helping
themselves, it's hardly surprising that Islamophobia, the acceptable racism
for our time, has taken root in New Zealand. The vast bulk of New
Zealanders have, I believe, been genuine in their shock and their goodwill.
But it's no thanks to Ardern or Dalziel, and Muslims here, both refugee and
New Zealand born, have reported harassment in the time they've lived here.
Even when it was very clear that this was an Islamophobic attack on a
mosque, some of my students (15 year olds) thought this was an Islamist
attack - it just fitted their paradigm.

[Marxism] On the now-dissolved [DSA] Spring Caucus: Latinos, the DSA and intersectionality

The (IMHO) workerist, economist and class-reductionist Spring Caucus of
the DSA (the current formerly known as Momentum which maintains the
socialistcall.com website has dissolved due to "significant and
unresolvable disagreements over how to relate to other DSA tendencies,
how best to relate to anti-oppression mobilizations and demands, and the
nature and role of our caucus in DSA."

Full is here:
https://socialistcall.com/2019/03/17/setbacks-and-new-beginnings/

I wrote a rather extensive critique of their politics on the national
question in the United States as it related to Latinos and undocumented
immigrants.

*  *  *

This post was written looking forward to the DSA convention. Although
finished, I had not made it public, unsure as to whether it would
further complicate an unfortunate situation where some caucuses had been
formed prematurely, leading others to also form caucuses in response.
Now with the just-announced dissolution of the Spring Caucus, the
situation has changed.

I joined one of the counter-caucuses to Spring, the Socialist Majority
caucus. And a related reason for not posting this article is that
Socialist Majority had decided that, as a group, it would limit itself
to presenting our own vision for the DSA as a multi-tendency
organization, and not a critique of other viewpoints.

"The Call" announces the dissolution of the Spring Caucus
So it had not discussed a lot of the ideas presented in this article,
and, frankly, I would have been against the caucus or the DSA adopting
them as such; at this stage of its development, the DSA should remain
open and inclusive of many currents, including those of comrades who
disagree with me, such as the authors of the two documents I criticize
below.

A strange article because nowhere in the article does it actually discuss
the carbon foot print of France! If you look at the electricitymap.com site
and click on France, you will see it has a carbon footprint about 8 times
lower than that of renewable energy heavy Germany. It is among the lowest 3
in Europe (hydro heavy Norway and hydro/nuclear heavy Sweden). They could
de better by phasing out natural gas, which is about 10% of their grid at
various times. But that would piss off the Green Party as they are heavily
invested politically in gas as the back up for the increased renewables the
gov't has committed to increases, against France's massive nuclear grid
(and the basis for their low GHG footprint). The best thing immediatly
would be for an incentive program to deploy more electric vehicles at this
point.

[Marxism] When America’s Love of the Open Frontier Hit a Wall

(Good review that would have been better without the gratuitous swipe at
Howard Zinn.)

NY Times Sunday Book Review, March 17, 2019
When America’s Love of the Open Frontier Hit a Wall
By Edward Dolnick

THE END OF THE MYTH
From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America
By Greg Grandin
369 pp. Metropolitan Books/Henry Holt & Company. $30.

In a speech in 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt reminded a San Francisco
audience of what had always distinguished the United States from other
nations since its earliest days. “At the very worst,” Roosevelt
declared, “there was always the possibility of climbing into a covered
wagon and moving west where the untilled prairies afforded a haven for
men to whom the East did not provide a place.”

Well, yes and no. It is the mission of this fine, elegantly written
history to explore the ever-shifting role of the frontier in the
American story. Just who was welcome in that west-facing “haven,” Greg
Grandin explains, was never as simple as Americans liked to proclaim.
But “The End of the Myth” has a shadow theme. How is it, Grandin wants
to know, that the symbol of America was once a boundless, beckoning
frontier and today is a dark and forbidding wall?

The first person to articulate the frontier thesis was a University of
Wisconsin historian who was little regarded at the time, Frederick
Jackson Turner. In 1893, he read a paper on “The Significance of the
Frontier in American History” to a sleepy audience. No one asked a question.

The world quickly woke up. Turner’s idea was that the United States had
been blessed by geographic good fortune. The seemingly infinite West
would solve the problems that arose whenever too many people were jammed
into too small a space. The frontier, in Grandin’s summary, “would
reduce racism to a remnant and leave it behind as residue. It would
dilute other social problems as well, including poverty, inequality and
extremism, teaching diverse people how to live together in peace.”

It was a pretty picture and a profoundly optimistic one. The frontier,
Turner declared, was “a magic fountain of youth in which America
continually bathed and was rejuvenated.” Grandin deepens and enriches
that picture. Though Turner depicted the frontier as “a place where
individualism sprouted from the land like prairie weeds,” in Grandin’s
summary, that got the story backward. The reality, Grandin argues, was
that “the state preceded the frontier.” Before the settlers arrived, the
government had bought the land and surveyed it and built roads across
it. Above all, the United States Army removed Native Americans and
Mexicans from the settlers’ way, in brutal and deadly fashion.

But this is a measured, careful work, not a “People’s History” polemic.
Grandin is a fine explainer with a knack for pithy summary. Turner’s
frontier was a restrained place, “more James Stewart than John Wayne.”
America was “a nation founded on unparalleled freedom and unmatched
unfreedom.” The appeal of the frontier myth was that it took problems in
the “here and now” and shifted them to the “there and then.”

Grandin keeps his cool — he prefers the stiletto to the club — but he
grows angrier as his history reaches the present day. “The frontier was,
ultimately, a mirage,” he writes, because it promised “a limitless
world” where “all could benefit; all could rise and share in the earth’s
riches.” The wall, on the other hand, is “a monument to disenchantment,”
a deafening shout that “there’s not enough to go around.”

The wall stands as our new emblem, Grandin writes, and “it is a symbol
of a nation that used to believe that it had escaped history, or at
least strode atop history, but now finds itself trapped by history.”
Disenchanted and bewildered, we have become, so Grandin contends, “a
country that increasingly defines itself by what it hates.”

Edward Dolnick has written books on the American West and many other
subjects. He is currently working on a book about the Rosetta Stone.

*Kirsten Gillibrand* has just formally announced her candidacy for
president.
My first thought on looking at her picture in the WSJ is that she doesn't
stand a chance because of her hair. Men need a full head of hair like Beto.
Women need longer, flowing hair like Kamala. A hairdo like Kirsten's makes
a woman candidate look not feminine enough, which is usually too
threatening to too many male (and probably female) voters. (It was one of
the major handicaps of Hillary Clinton. Likewise for Nancy Pelosi today.)
But maybe it's more complicated than that in this case. Kirsten has the
blond hair and blue eyes and the general features of a slightly aging movie
star. The hard hairdo gives her a slightly more serious look, so maybe in
her case this works.

this understanding makes another candidacy a good bet. That is the
candidacy of one who's tall and slender, good looking and energetic, with
his impossible-to-define political positions he's got a youthful following,
and most important of all, he's got a good smile and good hair. He's the
living proof that reincarnation is true. He's *Beto "Barack" O'Rourke*!

As for the coming announcement of *Joe Biden*, his hair makes him look too
much like a retread tire that doesn't have much tread life left. Nope.
Won't do. He might possibly make it through the qualifying race because
he's the Michelin of the Democrats - the best know and trusted brand. but
if the car running on these tires wins the Grand Prix, it's only because
the tires of the competitor suffered a blow out.
In general, I think we have to be aware of this: There are some general
rules for correct physical appearance for a successful car salesperson.
Each type of appearance must also be matched with a particular sales
method. The same goes for a sales person of the ideas of the capitalist
class.

Before becoming a rising star in the Democratic Party, Beto O’Rourke relied
on a core group of business-minded Republicans in his Texas hometown to
launch and sustain his political career.

To win their backing, Mr. O’Rourke opposed Obamacare, voted against Nancy
Pelosi as the House Democratic leader and called for a raise in the Social
Security eligibility age.
