In the late 1800s NZ was called "The little Prussia of the South Pacific"
and for good reason. It tried to build a little empire, with its capital
in Wellington.

Mostly, the NZ ruling class lost out to bigger imperialists in Europe and
the USA.

But it wasn't for lack of trying.

Yet illusions in NZ imperialism remain widespread, even on the left.

There is also another interesting quote.

"Muslim noted that they had talked with the Russian and Syrian officials
many times and tried to reach an agreement before. He said that this
agreement, a first of its kind, also includes the liberation of Afrin.
“Russia and the regime did not accept an agreement before the withdrawal
of US troops. But now they have accepted it. This is a first and talks
will continue. One of the major points of this agreement is its
inclusion of Afrin. Once security is maintained in the area, there will
be a collaboration for the liberation of Afrin as well.”"

This confirms what we have said since a long time: the PYD/YPG
leadership was always willing to strike a deal with the Assad regime
(not just now when Turkey invades in the North East). It didn't happen
because Assad/Putin saw no purpose in such a deal.

Furthermore it is bizarre that the PYD leader puts any trusts in
"guarantees" by Putin. Obviously he has learned nothing from his
experience with the U.S. "guarantees". But may be Russia is more
trustworthy than the U.S.?!

However, the PYD leadership can feel relieved that Trump strongly
supports their alliance with Assad. As he said in a tweet on 14 October:
“Anyone who wants to assist Syria in protecting the Kurds is good with
me, whether it is Russia, China, or Napoleon Bonaparte (!). I hope they
all do great, we are 7,000 miles away. (…) Let Syria and Assad protect
the Kurds and fight Turkey for their own land.”

Some people are worried that the promise of a civil war may become a
reality --- the democratic majority (especially if the election is close in
some key states) will have to rely on the "discipline" of the police forces
and the military -- especially the hierarchy --- Granted the military
hierarchy will stick with the ruling class -- but there could be SERIOUS
civil disorders by the "militias" and who knows where the local police
forces will be -- (throw in ICE agents who are BIG supporters of Trump as
well as the military folks who have been brainwashed) --- I do believe that
unless there is very successful voter suppression, that the Dems will pull
it out -- BUT -- it will depend on the Obama coalition coming out to vote
---

Note that this attack didn't come from the Administration (i.e. Botstein,
etc.) but from an outside guest speaker *against* the Administration
including Roger Berkowitz who runs the Hannah Arendt Center:
https://forward.com/opinion/letters/433122/letter-to-the-editor-i-organized-the-bard-conference-and-batya-ungar/

Indeed it appears the College is actually, quite pissed. Even though BUS
long ago discredited herself as anything other than a racist and a
brain-dead propagandist, Berkowitz took a risk and invited her along with
another person who has been repeatedly condemned for her cheap invective.
They did everything they could to give these individuals a platform even
though they hardly deserved one, let alone one named after Hannah Arendt.
And instead of BUS using the platform the school gave her to smear the
students, she defiantly walked out of the conference and then used the
Forward to smear the school.

Lay down with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Surely, the YPG leadership claims that Turkey is "its most dangerous
enemy". They are an Öcalan outfit so this is not particularly
surprising. They always find an excuse to ally themselves with much
worse enemies like U.S. imperialism and now Assad and Russian
imperialism. They have run Eastern Syria with the help of the U.S. and
oppressed one million Arabs living there. Unsurprisingly they are hated
by the vast majority of the Syrian people.

The YPG leadership has led the Kurds in a devastating cul-de-sac by the
silly nationalist policy where they offer themselves as mercenaries for
bigger reactionary powers.

The so-called “Syrian National Army” (or “Turkish FSA”) also claims that
they only ally themselves with Turkey in order to liberate the oppressed
Arab brothers and sisters. Now they will feel confirmed since the
alliance between Assad and the YPG has become official.

For Marxists, the main issue is not how one group ideologically
justifies its moves but which interests it serves objectively.

The SNA objectively serve the interests of the reactionary Turkish
state. The YPG objectively did serve U.S. imperialism in the past and,
after being dumped by Washington, they now serve Assad and Russian
imperialism.

All this is not surprising and has been analyzed and predicted since long.

It is tragic that self-proclaimed “socialists” like “Green Left Weekly”
(and various others) serve the PYD/YPG as uncritical cheerleaders – not
only objectively but also subjectively. There is a famous saying in
German language: “/It grows together, what belongs together/”. The
alliance of the YPG with Trump, Assad and Putin is true to their nature.
When Chris Slee and the “Green Left Weekly” defend and justify this
reactionary policy of the YPG, they also join these shameful alliances.
Don’t you think that at least now it is time to critical examine your
blind support for the PYD/YPG policy?!

Israel.  This army is permeated by a Turkish nationalist ideology that
is hostile to Kurdish aspirations.  It has a history of massacres
against the Kurdish people inside Turkey.

When Turkey started helping the Syrian rebels, it used aid as a means
of coopting many of them into its war against Rojava.  This led the
PYD to distrust the rebel movement.

The invasion of Afrin showed the PYD's fear of Turkey was justified.
This has been confirmed once again by the invasion of northeastern Syria.

This development is hardly surprising. For every sober observer it was
clear that the PYD/YPG leadership was always nearer to the Assad regime
than the Syrian people. (See e.g. our essay more than year ago (chapter
“Kurdish YPG/SDF: Mercenaries of many Masters”):
https://www.thecommunists.net/worldwide/africa-and-middle-east/syria-towards-the-final-battle-in-idlib/)

Shamefully, all this did not and will not stop many so-called
“left-wing” groups to cheer the PYD/YPG leadership!

The justification of the YPG is particular cynical: “Both of them are
dirty but Erdogan and his ISIS are dirtier.” It might be true that Assad
treats the YPG better than Erdogan and ISIS. But Assad certainly has
slaughtered many more civilians than the reactionary forces of Erdogan
and ISIS combined together. (See e.g. Syria: Who is Responsible for the
Civilian Death Toll from March 2011 to September 2018?
https://www.thecommunists.net/worldwide/africa-and-middle-east/syria-who-is-responsible-for-the-civilian-death-toll-from-march-2011-to-september-2018/)

I do not agree with this article. I don’t think it’s a good analysis. First

In the course of the hearings all sorts of dirt will come out. This will
drive all but the Trump fanatics into the Democrats’ camp. As for the
fanatics, I don’t think they are a majority in most states. Already the
polls show Trump losing in many swing states that he won in 2016. These
include Ohio, Pennsylvania and others. These hearings will strengthen that
trend. Yes, it will heighten the convictions and emotions of the fanatics.
That could drive them to even greater violence, but it won’t help re-elect
Trump.

[Marxism] Macabre Video of Fake Trump Shooting Media and Critics Is Shown at His Resort

NY Times, Oct. 14, 2019
Macabre Video of Fake Trump Shooting Media and Critics Is Shown at His
Resort

By Michael S. Schmidt and Maggie Haberman

WASHINGTON — A video depicting a macabre scene of a fake President Trump
shooting, stabbing and brutally assaulting members of the news media and
his political opponents was shown at a conference for his supporters at
his Miami resort last week, according to footage obtained by The New
York Times.

Several of Mr. Trump’s top surrogates — including his son Donald Trump
Jr., his former spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the governor of
Florida, Ron DeSantis — were scheduled to speak at the three-day
conference, which was held by a pro-Trump group, American Priority, at
Trump National Doral Miami. Ms. Sanders and a person close to Mr.
Trump’s son said on Sunday that they did not see the video at the
conference.

The video, which includes the logo for Mr. Trump’s 2020 re-election
campaign, comprises a series of internet memes. The most violent clip
shows Mr. Trump’s head superimposed on the body of a man opening fire
inside the “Church of Fake News” on parishioners who have the faces of
his critics or the logos of media organizations superimposed on their
bodies. It appears to be an edited scene of a church massacre from the
2014 dark comedy film “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”

The disclosure that the video was played shows how Mr. Trump’s
anti-media language has influenced his supporters and bled into their
own propaganda. Mr. Trump has made attacks on the news media a mainstay
of his presidency, and he tweeted a similar — but far less violent video
— in 2017. In recent weeks as he has confronted impeachment proceedings,
he has ramped up his attacks on the news media, repeatedly calling it
the “enemy of the people.”

A person who attended the conference last week took a video of the clip
on his phone and had an intermediary send it to a reporter for The
Times. Parts of the video were posted on YouTube in 2018 by a user with
a history of creating pro-Trump mash-ups.

The organizer of the event said in a statement on Sunday that the clip
had been played at the conference, saying it was part of a “meme
exhibit.” He denounced the video and said his organization was looking
into how it was shown at the event.

“Content was submitted by third parties and was not associated with or
endorsed by the conference in any official capacity,” said the
organizer, Alex Phillips. “American Priority rejects all political
violence and aims to promote a healthy dialogue about the preservation
of free speech. This matter is under review.”

Organizers declined to say exactly where at Mr. Trump’s resort the video
was shown.

A person close to Mr. Trump’s son said he was unaware that the video had
been played at the conference. Ms. Sanders said she was unaware of the
video’s existence until a Times reporter contacted her.

“I was there to speak at a prayer breakfast, where I spoke about unity
and bringing the country together,” Ms. Sanders said. “I wasn’t aware of
any video, nor do I support violence of any kind against anyone.”

A spokesman for Mr. Trump’s campaign said he knew nothing about the video.

“That video was not produced by the campaign, and we do not condone
violence,” said Tim Murtaugh, the spokesman.

A DeSantis spokeswoman did not respond to an email seeking comment.

The video depicts a scene inside the “Church of Fake News,” where
parishioners rise as Mr. Trump — dressed in a black pinstripe suit and
tie — walks down the aisle. Many parishioners’ faces have been replaced
with the logos of news media organizations, including PBS, NPR,
Politico, The Washington Post and NBC.

Mr. Trump stops in the middle of the church, pulls a gun out of his suit
jacket pocket and begins a graphic rampage. As the parishioners try to
flee, the president fires at them. He shoots Black Lives Matter in the
head, and also shoots Vice News.

Some of those in the church try to apprehend Mr. Trump. He fends them
off and makes his way toward the altar, knocking over several pews. He
wrestles a parishioner with a Vice News logo as a face to the ground and
then shoots the person at point blank range. In the background, the
former F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, is seen trying to get away.

From there, Mr. Trump attacks a range of his critics. He strikes the
late Arizona senator John McCain in the back of the neck. He hits the
television personality Rosie O’Donnell in the face and then stabs her in
the head. He strikes Representative Maxine Waters, Democrat of
California. He lights the head of Senator Bernie

This development is hardly surprising. For every sober observer it was
clear that the PYD/YPG leadership was always nearer to the Assad regime
than the Syrian people. (See e.g. our essay more than year ago (chapter
