Excellent, well-balanced article by Amr Salahi.

The recently launched Turkish operation against Kurdish militias in
northeastern Syria brings with it fears of ethnic cleansing and demographic
change. Turkey has said that "Operation Peace Spring" aims to set up a
30-kilometre wide "safe zone" in northeastern Syria, which would be under
the control of Turkish-allied Syrian rebel groups. President Erdogan has
said that Turkey aims to settle nearly three million of Syrian refugees in
the safe zone.

Much of the area where Turkey plans to settle Syrian refugees has always
had a Kurdish majority, particularly the areas of the Jazirah region to the
northeast of al-Hasakeh, including the city of Qamishli. Other areas of
northeastern Syria have a majority Arab population or a mixed Kurdish-Arab
population.
…..

Both Turkey on the one hand and the PYD and SDF on the other have offered
unconvincing justifications as to why refugees cannot return to the areas
in Syria that they control. Turkey says that Kurdish refugees from Afrin,
living in dire conditions in the surrounding area, have been prevented by
the YPG from returning, while the SDF says that refugees cannot return to
its territories because of delays in reconstruction and the presence of
landmines.

While they are implacable enemies, both sides have won some Syrians over to
their side, the PYD by offering security and allowing a measure of freedom,
and Turkey with its proclaimed support for the Syrian revolution and Syrian
rebel groups.

However, their conflict is likely to lead to more displacement and shifts
in population, and to exacerbate the divisions in Syrian society even more,
drawing Syrians further and further into Turkey's decades-long conflict
with the Kurds

Sadly, this piece of satire is pretty accurate!

by The Council of Disobedient Women

In a press release today Massey University announced it has decided to
rebrand and reorientate after struggling to be a University for grown-ups.
For some time the University has wanted to be a safe play space for
wee-woke-misogynists who have been really badly triggered by *words* and
*ideas*. We received this statement today. . .

These "debates" have become less substantive and more of a spectacle every
time they do them. Their corporate sponsorship and the requirement of a
certain level of campaign moo-lah in order to buy your part of the platform
makes the fundamental nature of electoral politics absolutely
transparent--as much as the motives of the Democratic National Committee
and the various organs of the media in sponsoring and structuring them. All
the commentary building up to them aims at encouraging confrontational
rhetoric and minimizing conflict over substantive questions. The whole
thing is modeled on a game show and it's no secret that that's what framed
the election of the present Con-artist-in-Chief.

And they've gotten worse every four years. Next time, I'm expecting mud
wrestling. Eight years, maybe the swimsuit competition with Trump lurking
in the dressing rooms.

I don't know how anyone with an ounce of respect for themselves and what
they say they're running to promote can go anywhere near them.

Yeah, I had heard about a Socialist Action split. Good for these
comrades breaking with the idiot Jeff Mackler who speaks at events
alongside the bat-shit crazy Eva Bartlett.

INTRODUCING SOCIALIST RESURGENCE!

Socialist Resurgence (SR) is a new national organization of activists in
the United States committed to the interests of workers and the
oppressed, and the creation of a socialist world in which society is
organized according the needs of working people rather than profit.

We think that the moment is extremely favorable for the founding of a
new revolutionary socialist organization. We are greatly enthused by the
increased interest in socialist ideas in the United States, the rise in
activism in the labor movement as well as in many social movements, and
the fervent dialogue within the socialist movement about how to advance
the efforts to build a revolutionary party. We wish to participate in
that dialogue.

For a brief introduction to the program of our new organization, please
click on “What we stand for” on the top menu of the Home Page. Some of
our founding programmatic documents are in the “SR Documents” section of
this site. In the coming days, we will post many more articles and
documents that explain the program of Socialist Resurgence.

The core of our group originated as a tendency within Socialist
Action—the Permanent Revolution Faction (PRF)—that had been formed to
defend the historic program of revolutionary socialism as practiced
during the best years of Socialist Action and the Socialist Workers
Party before that. Most of our founding members were expelled or
resigned from Socialist Action in mid-October 2019. The attempts by the
faction that dominates Socialist Action to avoid thorough investigation
and discussions of those issues led them to take organizational steps
against comrades now in Socialist Resurgence. Ultimately, our comrades
were purged and silenced because of their dissident views. The major
differences we had with the dominant faction of Socialist Action had to
do with several key international struggles, including those in Syria,
Iran, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Kashmir.

Throughout the debates in Socialist Action, we attempted to halt the
organization’s backsliding on basic principles of our revolutionary
program, such as how Trotsky’s thesis of Permanent Revolution ties in
with our analysis of current uprisings, wars, and imperialist
interventions in the semi-colonial world. The opening debate in
Socialist Action, beginning in late 2015, concerned the war in Syria,
when we opposed the position in SA that the authoritarian regime of
Bashar Assad, and its Russian and Iranian allies, were liberators of the
Syrian people. We also rejected the adaptation by the Socialist Action
leadership majority to those in the antiwar movement who promote Russia
and China as progressive powers in the semi-colonial world.

We were further appalled by the Socialist Action leadership’s rejection
of the efforts by revolutionaries and labor militants in Iran,
Venezuela, and other countries to develop an independent working- class
front against imperialism. And we said “no” when SA failed to warn
working people of the likely default of semi-colonial capitalist regimes
in the struggle against imperialism. We believe that the fight against
U.S. imperialism, which entails mobilizing the largest numbers possible
in united-front actions to get the “U.S. Out Now” also requires
socialists to engage in direct solidarity with the struggles of the
workers inside the semi-colonial countries, who are most capable of
mounting an effective struggle against imperialist intervention.

Again, this is merely a brief introduction about the origins of our new
group. To learn more about us, we invite you to explore the other
articles and documents on this site.

This Friday, “The Cave” opens at the Metrograph in NYC at 9pm. Directed
by Feras Fayyad, who will be on hand for the Q, it tells the story of
the main hospital in East Ghouta that was forced to operate below ground
in order to escape relentless Russian aerial bombardment. It is focused
on three women who chose to work in dangerous conditions and with none
of the blandishments a medical profession affords. Their heroism is a
reminder that the Syrian revolution brought out the best of the people
even if people like Tulsi Gabbard would have you believe that their
ambition was to impose sharia law and carry out a new 9/11 attack.

Just watching CNN right now. They are reporting that the Republican caucus
of the Senate held a closed door meeting with Trump’s Secretary of State
Esper and that they all roasted him on the Syria pullout.

Add to this the FBI investigation into those two guys whose names slip my
mind but were evidently involved in Trump’s Ukraine shenanigans and have
been arrested for campaign law violations. Now it seems the Giuliani is
coming under scrutiny in this affair. This means that Trumps personal
lawyer is being investigated as a security violated. Trump will of course
throw him under the bus, which means Giuliani will return the favor.

All this reinforces my point that it is extremely mistaken to consider
Trump’s pullout in Syria as a decision of US imperialism, if by that we
mean that the US capitalist class made or supports that decision. They
didn’t and they don’t. If anything, Trump is acting on behalf of RUSSIAN
imperialism!

None of which negates the historic weakening of US imperialism, but that’s
a different matter.

I agree with John that the comparison between the US defeat in Vietnam, and
its ultimate disastrous withdrawal, with Trump's withdrawal of US forces
from Syria is way off the mark.

The United States was not defeated militarily in Syria as it was in Viet
Nam.

However, the United States has suffered a serious and historic reversal in
the Middle East which no sector of the American ruling class knows how to
address. The two wars against Iraq completely failed to achieve their goals
of creating compliant client states in the Persian Gulf. The endless war in
Afghanistan has failed to accomplish anything other than devastation and
death.

Trump's decision has undoubtedly worsened this disaster for United States
imperialism, threatening even to undo its one victory, the Kurdish defeat
of the Islamic State.

One thing we should keep in mind, is the boundless corruption of Mr. Trump.
Rather than thinking that this was done on a personal whim, Trump may have
found a way to make a little cash off of the situation, banking on the
endless debasement of the Republican Senate, and the undying support of the
Christian right, gun fanatics, and racists.

Whether a whim, or a bribe, this action has brought Trump several steps
closer to being removed from office before the elections next year.

A lot of gun lovers are soldiers and former soldiers, and their love for
Trump has taken a big hit with this decision. He had already proven his
disdain for soldiers, but now he is increasingly being seen as a traitor to
the grunts on the front lines.

How this will play out behind closed doors is difficult to predict, but if
the Republicans cannot find a way to remove him before next November,
Trump´s vaunted base may have flown the coop, and we could see an historic
change putting the Democrats in control of everything except the Supreme
Court and a few state houses.

There were no real surprises at last night's Democratic Party debate. The
main thing is that Tulsi Gabbard emerged as a serious danger, a real point
of confusion, a future important nexus of the far right and the "left" -
the red brown alliance, in other words.
