Frank Keane was O/C of the Dublin brigade of the IRA in the early 1960s.

In the late 1960s he, several other prominent former activists in the
Dublin IRA and some young supporters of the Fourth International formed
Saor Eire, a political-military organisation dedicated to fighting for
Irish national liberation and socialism. . .

Saor Eire would subsequently be much maligned. But its attempt to combine
the military and political aspects of struggle and national liberation and
socialism were impressive.

In the journal Race Traitor and in a provocative book, Dr. Ignatiev argued
that the white race should, in a sense, be abolished.

By Neil Genzlinger

Nov. 14, 2019

Noel Ignatiev, a provocative scholar who argued that the idea of a white
race is a false construct that society would be better off without, died on
Saturday in Tucson, Ariz., where he was visiting a family member. He was 78.

His son, John, said the cause was complications of a chronic illness.

Dr. Ignatiev — who came to the academic world after two decades as a
factory worker — made a splash in 1995 with his book “How the Irish Became
White,” which looked at the assimilation of the Irish Catholics who
emigrated to the United States in the 1800s. Ill treated in their home
country, they started out at the bottom of the economic ladder in the
United States as well, competing with free black laborers for the worst
jobs in the North and, in the South, being relegated to work deemed too
dangerous to risk the life of a valuable slave.

“This book looks at how one group of people became white,” Dr. Ignatiev
wrote in the introduction. “Put another way, it asks how the Catholic
Irish, an oppressed race in Ireland, became part of an oppressing race in
America.”

Beneath the case study was an idea that Dr. Ignatiev had long been
exploring, including in Race Traitor, a journal that he and John Garvey
founded in 1992. The publication’s aim, Dr. Ignatiev once put it, was “to
explore how people who had been brought up as white might become unwhite” —
that is, renounce the privileges that came with the label “white,” like
favored access to good jobs and neighborhoods.

“How the Irish Became White” is among a group of books that have been
foundational
to what became known as whiteness studies, a field that examines the
structures that produce white privilege.

“Many academics today study whiteness,” Adam Sabra, a history professor at
the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a longtime friend, said by
email. “Noel Ignatiev wanted to abolish it.”

But, as Dr. Ignatiev always felt compelled to point out, he was not
advocating some sort of mass extermination, just a change in presumptions.

“There is youth culture and drug culture and queer culture; but there is no
such thing as white culture,” Dr. Ignatiev said at a 1997 conference at the
University of California, Berkeley. “Without the privileges attached to it,
the white race would not exist, and white skin would have no more social
significance than big feet.”

When interviewers would ask why he, a white man, was seeming to argue for
canceling his own race, he would rebel at the very label.

“That’s not a term I like to have applied to myself,” he told CNN in 2002.
“I want to get rid of it, because I think that the price that it extracts
from us is greater than the benefit it brings.”

Noel Saul Ignatin was born on Dec. 27, 1940, in Philadelphia. (John
Ignatiev said the family had changed its last name before his father was
born; his father, whose parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia, changed
it back to something closer to the original name when he reached
adulthood.) His father, Irv, delivered newspapers, and his mother, Carrie,
was a homemaker; later they ran a housewares store together.

His parents, intellectuals despite their humble circumstances and
Communists, were committed to bridging the racial divide, something Noel
saw in practice when helping his father with his newspaper deliveries
before he went off to school.

“The route was in a mostly black neighborhood,” he said last month on the
podcast “It’s Going Down,” “My father used to say there was not another
white man in the city who could have handled it. Many of the customers
would stop and tell me what a fine man my father was.”

Dr. Ignatiev graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia and
attended the University of Pennsylvania, but after his third year there he
dropped out because, as he told The Boston Globe in 2000, the student life
felt sterile. He worked in steel mills and other factories, mostly in
Chicago, “while trying to promote a proletarian revolution,” his son said.
He rejected any opportunity to become a supervisor.

“I wanted to be a worker because I thought they had something to teach me,”
he told The Globe. “I gained an appreciation for their knowledge, sense of
realism and capabilities.”

He was involved in various leftist and revolutionary groups in this period,
including Students for a Democratic Society and the Sojourner Truth
Organization, which was focused on workplace issues and their relation to
race. In 1967 he and Ted Allen wrote an influential, much-reproduced paper,
“The White

NY Times Op-Ed, Nov. 14, 2019
The Brief and Inspiring Life of James Le Mesurier
By Janine di Giovanni

Ms. di Giovanni is the author of “The Morning They Came for Us:
Dispatches from Syria.”

On Monday morning, James Le Mesurier, the founder of Mayday Rescue, a
charity that supported and trained the White Helmets, the Syrian civil
defense group, was found dead in Istanbul. His body was found outside a
building in the Beyoglu district where he had an apartment and office.
It is unclear whether Mr. Le Mesurier, who was 48 and healthy, fell or
was pushed from the balcony of his apartment. The Turkish authorities
have started an investigation.

Mr. Le Mesurier, a former British Army officer, had worked in Iraq and
Kosovo before turning his attention to Syria. He was committed to
ensuring war-torn communities learn how to take care of themselves when
no one else was coming to save them. He was awarded the Order of the
British Empire in 2016 for his work.

The White Helmets are emergency medical workers. They have, according to
their own estimate, rescued about 115,000 people and lost more than 250
of their own volunteers — they have a high chance of being killed
themselves when they rush to the scene of a bombing. This was the world
the funny, smart, brave and principled Mr. Le Mesurier worked in.

His work earned him many detractors, including Maria Zakharova, the
spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Three days
before his mysterious death, Ms. Zakharova claimed that Mr. Le Mesurier
was a “former agent of Britain’s MI6, who has been spotted all around
the world.”

Most foreign correspondents, humanitarian workers and United Nations
officials frequently get landed with the sobriquet. There is no evidence
that Mr. Le Mesurier was a spy.

I saw him as a humanitarian who accomplished enormous feats in
alleviating the suffering of civilians in Syria. I first encountered him
after spending time in Aleppo during the terrible days and nights of
fierce aerial bombardment, where barrel bombs were dropped on the city
by the Syrian regime’s jets.

I have been under fierce bombardment before — in Sarajevo, Chechnya and
Iraq — but Syria was something else. The sheer terror of civilians
buried under the weight of concrete buildings, sometimes for hours,
sometimes for days, was unforgettable.

Mr. Le Mesurier’s concept of the White Helmets was to train civilians to
look after their neighbors, to pull them out of the rubble, to bring
them back to life. He always told me that people were more likely to
search for others if they knew it was a member of their community. “If
you get buried, you know someone is looking out for you,” he said.
“Someone is coming for you. This is how community strengthening works.”

Civil Defense White Helmets, via Associated Press
The White Helmets were formed in 2014. Soon after, Khaled Omar Harrah, a
former home decorator and father of two, pulled a 10-day-old baby, who
had been buried for 16 hours, out of the wreckage of a building. The
YouTube video went viral. Mr. Harrah was killed in an airstrike in 2016.

By then, the White Helmets were superheroes. They were nominated for the
Nobel Peace Prize. A Netflix documentary about their work won an Academy
Award in 2017, and Hollywood stars signed petitions in solidarity.
George Clooney bought the rights to a film about them.

But the White Helmets had dangerous enemies, most notably those attached
to Russia. By 2015, the Russians had joined the dogfight over the skies
of Aleppo as a partner to President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. The
Russians bombed many civilian targets, including hospitals. The White
Helmets became more vulnerable; more than half were killed in
“double-tap” strikes, where Syrian regime and Russian warplanes returned
to the site of a bombing to target the rescue workers.

The Russians unleashed an army of trolls to discredit the White Helmets
by branding them “Al Qaeda.” Mr. Le Mesurier took on these adversaries,
dismantling their accusations about funding and the lies the White
Helmets supposedly spread about Russian and Syrian government attacks.

There were also personal slurs, about his character and his background
in the British Army, from pro-Assad trolls and bloggers, but he shrugged
them off with a kind of nonchalance. The only time I saw him get truly
angry

CFP: Revolutions: Moments and Movements in Historical Perspective

by Sean Harvey

*Revolutions: *

*Moments and Movements in Historical Perspective*

What is a Revolution? Historians have used the term broadly to
describe movements resulting in the toppling of regimes and establishment
of new social and political orders, yet much remains unclear. Are
revolutions an intrinsically modern phenomenon, or can the concept be
productively applied to events in the ancient and medieval worlds? Can
revolutions be clearly bounded in time? How do they begin and end? Is there
a common trajectory? When and why do revolutions arise in interrelated
clusters? However we choose to answer such questions, the 30th anniversary
of the fall of the Berlin Wall and recent events, from the Arab Spring to
the riots in Hong Kong, remind us that revolutions, whether a cause of hope
or trepidation, have lost none of their force and relevance.

The Department of History of Seton Hall University invites paper proposals
for the symposium “Revolutions: Moments and Movements in Historical
Perspective.” The symposium will consider revolutions broadly in their
social, cultural, and intellectual origins and ramifications, examining the
interactions of ideologies, structures, pivotal moments, and social and
political movements. The committee particularly encourages proposals that
address the following topics:

   - Revolutionary ideas and ideologies
   - Social and political conditions as preconditions for revolt
   - Participation in, and opposition to, revolution by diverse groups
within and excluded from the polity
   - Cultural productions (including writing, art, material culture, and
technology) that mobilized people or justified change
   - Foreign influence in promoting or suppressing revolution
   - Internal violence and external war in creating or changing
   revolutionary conditions
   - Establishing revolutionary regimes through legal and political
   institutions
   - Popular rituals enacting protest, intimidation, belonging, or
   allegiance
   - Connections among disparate revolutionary movements

The symposium will be held on Thursday and Friday, February 6-7. A keynote
address by Ervand Abrahamian, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Iranian
and Middle Eastern History and Politics at Baruch College, City University
of New York, will open the symposium on Thursday evening, February 6. The
symposium’s panels and a roundtable discussion will be held on Friday,
February 7. The symposium will be held at the South Orange, New Jersey,
campus of Seton Hall University, about half an hour outside New York City.

The committee welcomes proposals from historians in all fields, including
advanced graduate students. Please send proposals, in the form of a single
document containing (1) a title and an abstract of 250 words and (2) a
short CV, to setonhallhistorysympos...@gmail.com by Friday, November 15,
2019.

Seton Hall will provide two-nights of accommodations for all invited
participants coming from outside the New York City/Northern New Jersey
area, as well as meals for all invited panelists. Travel funding may also
be available on a case-by-case basis.

Hi all,

Ben Hillier has gone to HK to report on the state of the movement there for
Redflag. Check out his coverage:

"Hong Kong Polytechnic is calm, the barricades enormous, and the graffiti
ubiquitous. Among the slogans are “Liberty or death”, “Kill someone, pay
the price”, and “If your family member were killed, would you still go to
work?” The last is an exhortation for the city’s workers to strike over the
death of 22-year-old Chow Tsz-lok last week. Police say he fell from a car
park. Students don’t believe it.

Several buildings have been smashed up, including the ground floor of the
registrar’s office. Masked students chat in a coffee shop amid the
shattered glass. Others continue spraying political slogans on the ground
outside the student association and on walls not already covered. Two more
drive seconded maintenance vehicles about. On the roof, a lookout keeps
watch. They are nervous, one student says, about another police offensive,
like that at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

CUHK is under siege. The train line to it has been shut and, being in the
outer east of the region, you can get there only by car. But police have
set up roadblocks to control who goes into the area. The university has
cancelled all classes until the end of the year and is telling resident
students to leave. It is an ominous development that will isolate the
activists on campus and open them to a perhaps more ferocious attack. At
least 60 people were injured when police invaded the campus on Tuesday,
firing rubber bullets and tear gas. It wasn’t just current students. Many
alumni rushed to the university to help. The university president and other
officials came to negotiate with police. They were tear gassed as well.

The university has historically been one of the centres of student activism
in Hong Kong. And it has been at the forefront of opposition to the
now-shelved “extradition law” – a catalyst for the current upheaval because
it would have allowed Hong Kongers to be extradited to the mainland for
trial and imprisonment. “These students have been very active”, Au Loong
Yu, a veteran activist and author, says in his office on the other side of
town. “CUHK got the moniker ‘Riot University’ from pro-Beijing netizens and
it has been taken up by many people. They and the police say the dorms are
factories for producing Molotov cocktails and that the university
encourages it.” CUHK militants certainly are tough. After suffering the
assault on Tuesday, today (Wednesday) students were testing a catapult they
built to launch petrol bombs at police when they next try to take the
campus, according to a report in the *South China Morning Post*. There is
consensus here that CUHK is the most important centre of university
activism and – depending on which side you are on – that it must be either
defended or crushed.
He will be reporting daily. https://redflag.org.au/node/6951

By Patrick Bond

Just as Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) heads of state
prepared to meet in Brasilia on November 13-14, hosted by Jair
Bolsonaro, a double political earthquake hit: Lula’s freedom from prison
on November 8, followed by a coup against Bolivian president Evo Morales
on November 11.

Lula was central to BRICS’ establishment a decade ago. Details about the
profound injustices and indignities suffered by Brazil’s 2003-10
president – who was jailed in April 2018 on (illegitimate, frame-up)
corruption charges – and the potential for a Workers Party (PT)
resurgence can reliably be found (in the English language) at
Brasilwire. The situation remains fluid because the 74 year-old former
president has more trials pending and is technically not allowed to
return to politics due to his earlier bogus conviction, but appeals are
underway.

Regardless of how lawfare plays out, Lula has created
socio-political-economic schizophrenia: what Brazilian journalist Pepe
Escobar describes as the contrast between social democracy and
neo-fascism. More power to Lula and a resurgent Brazilian left – with
all due caution about whether the balance of forces justify such
hopefulness based upon the fate of a single politician, no matter how
superlative his skills.

Certainly when, in early 1989, I interviewed him on the U.S. Pacifica
radio network, his answer to my question was stunning: “You just came
from the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce, so what did you tell them?”

Lula: “If they don’t give up their rings, we’ll chop off their fingers.”

But that radical Lula changed dramatically in the period since, after
repeated runs for the presidency. His political agenda moderated and his
hunt for allies among a supposedly patriotic bourgeoisie quickened,
especially during the 2002-11 commodity super-cycle. But he also doubled
the minimum wage and, with rising cash transfers to the masses, he cut
sharply into Brazil’s notorious inequality. He left office with the
world’s highest presidential approval polling: 80 percent.

At the Historical Materialism conference, the Saturday discussion
between Professor David Harvey and myself on Marx’s double-edge law
attracted more than 250 people. Sunday’s session on the economics of
modern imperialism that I had organised also attracted a good turnout of
around 60 people, many of which were clearly experts on the subject.
Unfortunately for them, the four speakers (including myself) went over
their allotted times and used up the available discussion time –
apologies all round!
