Washington Post, Dec. 2, 2019
Dead sperm whale had 220 pounds of garbage in its stomach, including
rope, plastic and gloves

By Lateshia Beachum

Researchers on a Scottish island found disturbing items during a
necropsy of a juvenile sperm whale: 220 pounds of land and sea debris.

The young male found himself stranded on the sands of Luskentyre Beach
on the Isle of Harris, which is located at the northwest corner of the
Western Isles in Scotland.

His insides revealed an entangled ball of litter that dismayed
responders with the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme, an
organization that collects and analyzes data on stranded marine life
native to Scotland, according to the organization’s Facebook page.

The young whale had ingested a large amount of refuse, including bundles
of rope, plastic cups, bags and gloves. Examiners also found packing
straps and tubing inside his stomach.

The adolescent whale could have swallowed the debris at any point
between Norway and the Azores, an archipelago in the Mid-Atlantic,
marine experts said.

Dan Parry, an administrator for the Facebook page that promotes plastic
pickups on Luskentyre Beach, wrote that the 13-foot-long whale was
starved to death as its intestines could no longer process food.

But the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme found that while the
trash likely played a role in the whale’s death, it wasn’t the sole
reason. A beachside necropsy didn’t show evidence that trash had
impacted or obstructed his intestines.

The whale was in decent health despite its trash-filled gut, which
partially exploded when cut.

Animals as large as the sperm whale are very well insulated, according
to the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme. Even when temperatures
are freezing or just above, the dead animal’s insides still run hot,
causing rapid decay and even intestinal explosions.

Researchers are still looking into why the young whale ended up with so
much trash in his system.

Members of the coast guard and the Western Isles Council Disposal team
also contributed to the postmortem examination of the whale and his burial.

In January, Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme reported that 2018
was a record year for reported marine animal strandings in Scotland,
rising from 204 reports in 2009 to 930 last year.

For Parry, the gruesome discovery of refuse in the whale is a reminder
that keeping the oceans clean is everyone’s responsibility.

“The fishing industry need to do better, but equally, we all need to do
more,” he wrote. “Watching this today, makes me despair for the
environment, totally falling apart around us.”

[Marxism] Khabour Guards Commander: Turkey wants to wipe us out (ANF)

https://anfenglishmobile.com/rojava-syria/khabour-guards-commander-turkey-wants-to-wipe-us-out-39798

'For more than seven weeks Turkey has been attacking the self-governing
territories of North and East Syria in violation of international law. With the
occupation of the cities of Girê Spî (Tal Abyad) and Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain)
and surrounding villages by the NATO partner and its jihadist auxiliary troops,
approved by the US and Russia, some 300,000 people have had to leave their
homes so far. Nevertheless, Ankara is still not satisfied. In particular, the
villages around Til Temir and the small town of Ain Issa on the strategically
important M4 road are the focus of the invasion troops. The region lies outside
the targeted "security zone", a thirty-kilometer-deep strip on the Turkish
border, and is being attacked unabated. Ankara also wants to extend its
occupation to the other cities on the border line in order to implement the
actual goal behind the demanded withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces of
(SDF); the settlement of Syrian refugees from Turkey and their proxy army SNA
("Syrian National Army") in the border strip. There can therefore be no
question of a ceasefire such as the one agreed in Sochi at the end of October
between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart
Vladimir Putin.'

'Madeleine Khamis is a commander of the Khabour Guards. In an interview the
experienced commander spoke about the current situation in the region.
According to her statements, 70 villages in Til Temir have already been
occupied by the Turkish-jihadist invasion troops. Hundreds of Christian
families had to leave their homes.

' "Since the beginning of the invasion, we have resisted the occupying forces
on the basis of legitimate self-defence. If a no-fly zone had previously been
established in northern Syria, Turkey would hardly have been able to occupy our
regions. We have repeatedly called on the international community to ensure the
immediate closure of airspace. But we have always fallen on deaf ears. The
international forces continue to refer to the alleged ceasefire. Turkey and its
Islamist proxy army, however, are not complying with the ceasefire", emphasises
Khamis.'

The article below first appeared in the July 29, 1922 issue of The Workers
Republic, the paper of the newly-established Communist Party of Ireland.
The civil war had begun just a month earlier. The CPI aligned with the
anti-Treaty IRA and agitated for it to adopt a social programme pointing to
a workers’ republic, not just a republic.

Sean McLoughlin was actually the senior surviving commandant of the Easter
Rising of 1916. On the Friday evening, as the Rising was drawing to a
close, the 21-year-old had so impressed James Connolly and other leaders
that he was appointed overall military commander. This was done due to the
incapacitation of the badly-wounded Connolly, the original
commandant-general of all the insurrectionary forces. McLoughlin then led
the break-out from the GPO and into Moore Street.

McLoughlin later worked closely with Roddy Connolly in founding the
original, short-lived CPI and was active in workers’ struggles during the
civil war, including workplace occupations and the formation of soviets. . .

Subject: [S&S ed board] Marx Memorial Library in London

Comrades,
Last fall the Marx Memorial Library suffered major rain damage. The library is
one of the major repository for archives and books relating to Marxism and the
Working Class movement in English.
The building itself, 37 Clerkenwell Green has been in the radical movement
since the early 19th century. It was where Lenin's office was when he edited
Iskra from London (his office and desk are still there).
In response to the damage the Library is launching a special Lenin 150 fund
appeal to repair the structural damage and to better protect the archives.
I am attaching the appeal and hope some of us can contribute. I would also like
to propose that we publish it in the next issue, and I would like to raise this
at our meeting on Saturday.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you on Saturday.

Always the places of statecraft, which is to say the places of death,
borders have at times swallowed almost all political concerns before
them. They now appear poised to do so with terrifying force. In Europe,
once and present site of borders gone bonkers, this is clearest in the
policy positions of its contending nations, and most spectacularly in
the remaking of the electoral sphere into a pure contest of xenophobia,
such that progressive parties essay to determine what precise degree of
racism they must display in order to peel votes from the parliamentary
avatars of ethnonationalism.

So yeah, Vanessa Beeley is set to speak at two events in Montreal. The
main conference will be hosted by the Saint-Pierre Center, the other one
will allegedly take place at the University of Montreal (UdeM). For the
happy few not familiar with Beeley, she is a bullhorn for the propaganda
of a тройка made up of three democracy-loving regimes which are Assad’s
Syria, Putin’s Russia and the Mollahs’ Iran.

The theme of this year’s book fair is “Strike! Discovering Our Power.” We
selected this theme to celebrate the ways in which everyday people discover
their ability to work together. Inspired by the wave of strikes across the
United States in the past year, the massive General Strikes in India, and
the recent uprisings in Algeria and Sudan, we expand the idea of the strike
to include all of the ways people can take collective action to preserve
their homes, protect life on earth, respect indigeneity, shut down the
machinery that produces racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and
inequality, and build movements that are strong enough to last. The Strike!
is not only
about withdrawing our labor, but about redirecting it to create a better
world.

Featuring over sixty publishers, booksellers, and grassroots organizations,
dozens of author readings, panels, and workshops with Silvia Federici, Jane
McAlevey, Emory Douglas, Alice Bag, Bhaskar Sunkara, Nicholas Baham III,
Eric Drooker, Shawna Potter, Charlie Jane Anders, and voices from The

Hiroko Oyamada’s The Factory gives the lie to the idea that the

At Golden Oaks, a luxurious country retreat in the Hudson Valley, pregnant
women have the best care money can buy. From the organic food, personalised
exercise programmes, private yoga instruction and daily massages Golden
Oaks looks like a country lodge for the upper class. Set some time in the
near future this is a surrogacy farm where the wealthy can outsource
pregnancy. The pregnant ‘hosts’ are mostly migrant and poor, but there are
also a few young middle-class women. The hosts are well paid and get the
best medical care and attention. Too much attention in fact, as they have
signed over their liberty and they cannot leave. Their job is to produce
the perfect baby for their uber-rich clients. . .
