We buy eggs from a farm that has the following setup. A large chicken coop
with some kind of loose flooring is mounted on wheels. It is pulled through
a field by a very very slow solar-powered computer-operated tractor. The
chicken poop falls through the bottom of the coop and fertilizes the field.

yes, Les, those workers - plus, more importantly for planning and
socialization discussions, those who write the programs and who monitor
their execution and results.

do you mean data entry and software/processing labor?

my guess would be that data entry is mainly handled by web-based data
entry and the majority of labor is software development and maintenance
by a small fraction of (possibly libertarian dominated) people relative
to the old days.

but it would be interesting to see a *real* study.

Continuing on with episodic threads on Amazon et al.'s use of data and
automation, there are two relevant articles in today's Times:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/10/business/warehouse-
robots-learning.html?ref=todayspaper
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/10/technology/amazon-
robots-workers.html?ref=todayspaper
The articles make some salient points about the increasing ability of
robots to select and handle physical goods, and the corollary increasing
threat to human jobs.
What the articles DON'T address is the data that tells both robots and
humans which physical goods to order from suppliers, stock on shelves, and
send to customers.
I wonder if anyone has ever interviewed the workers handling that data (and
writing programs for it) and/or if papers have been written about that part
of the process.
