His father, Reza Pahlavi, was Shah at the start of World War II. Evidently he sought to keep Iran neutral and the Brits arranged his ouster, spiriting him away to exile in Egypt and placing his young son on the throne. I don't know whether the Soviets participated in that coup but Soviet troops did occupy parts of Northern Iran during World War II, withdrawing in 1946. SR > On February 15, 2019 at 11:23 AM "A.R. Who actually invited Medea Benjamin to Iran? Her group is very odd. They used to organize some of the anti-Israel-Lobby stuff in DC but they've since stopped doing that (I think over internal disputes with Palestine groups). Their heyday really was during the Iraq invasion when they siphoned support from Democrats. Amith R. [Marxism] Benjamin and Kolhatkar support Rouhani

We can put to one side the fact that Kolhatkar shows herself to be completely ignorant of the most basic facts of Iranian history. She clearly seems to think that the shah was in power before Mossadegh was overthrown. But that's just minor. Benjamin talks about the rich culture of Iran and its different national minorities. But not a word about the vicious repression of those minorities. She mentions the green revolt of a few years ago, but even makes that seem like something positive about the regime - as if the fact of those protests shows that Iran is a democratic state. But the most disgusting part is this: During the entire show, there's not a mention of the current protests in Iran. Nothing about the women protests, nor the movement of Iran's Arabs and Kurds, nor the labor strikes. No, the only hint of anything going on there is a mention of the MEK, which as she pointed out is linked with US imperialism. She thereby leaves the impression that any movement against that vicious, far right, clerical regime is due to US imperialism. In other words, what she's doing is supporting the regime. And, of course, not one serious question from Kolhatkar. I wrote her a letter of protest. I suggest that others do likewise. With politics like this, then we should have supported Hitler and Mussolini when they went to war with the US! Oh, wait, that's exactly what the red brown alliance leads to.
