Re: [Marxism] opposing the right wing coup without automatically supporting Correa
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == It is indeed. It shows that the coup was more than a dispute over police wages and that the governments of those neighboring states had advance notice of the coup attempt. Hopefully, something surfaces on wikileaks - preferably sooner rather than later. SR - Original Message - From: DW dwalters...@gmail.com It turns out that the key border crossings were not closed by Ecuadorean army or Border Police but by...Colombia and Peru, almost immediately, and only *today* opened them up. Re: [Marxism] Alexander Cockburn, Marc Cooper, and Cast ro’s Cuba
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == This was obvious to anyone who heard Cooper during his days at the Los Angeles Pacifica outlet (KPFK) in the mid to late 1990s. At the time it struck me that Cooper and some of those who shared the KPFK air with him reacted to the violence of the riots in Los Angeles that followed the Rodney King verdict in 1992 by discovering the benefits of the LAPD and of the US marines...SR - Original Message - From: Louis Proyect l...@panix.com The other journalist is a fellow named Marc Cooper, . I never would have dreamed that he would have evolved into the dyspeptic, Albert Shanker-like figure he is today. Keeping Woody Allen’s wisecrack from Sleeper in mind, let’s hope that Cooper never gets his hands on a nuclear weapon. Re: [Marxism] Noriega goes to France...
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == What is more, the US evidently spirited Noriega out of the country very suddenly, not even informing his lawyers. It is puzzling that the US would let him out of its clutches and equally puzzling that it would be in a hurry to do so, SR - Original Message - From: Mark Lause . Re: [Marxism] Decline of organized Judaism
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Absolutely, the phenomenon seems to apply to most organized religions in the US. But for immigration, there would be even steeper declines in attendance in Roman Catholic parish churches than in the liberal mainline Protestant denominations. SR - Original Message - From: Thomas Bias I don't have the numbers, but I suspect that one would see the same problems in the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches and the United Church of Christ as well. I think it has more to do with class than it does with culture or theology. Re: [Marxism] Irony Alert
== Rule #1: YOU MUST clip all extraneous text when replying to a message. == Not new. We heard the same thing in the 1990s, with even higher level defections than now (Jerry Brown and Ralph Nader). I think we need to look for actions within the Dem Party base, signaling people are voting with their feet - such as in local Democrat Party Clubs (which exist in the San Francisco Bay Area at least) or organized defections from local Dem oriented organizations. Have we seen much of that yet? SR - Original Message - From: Matthew Russo Obama's treachery will lead to new discussions about the need for a 3rd party to the left of the DP. My guess is that many of the people involved in the discussions will be disillusioned Democrats. The revolt in liberal ranks by Jane Hamsher, Garry Wills and Michael Moore is an expression of important trends that can lead somewhere down the road. Despite the fact that such people do not recite chapter and verse of the Grundrisse is no reason to turn up our noses at them. - Send list submissions to: Marxism@lists.econ.utah.edu Set your options at: http://lists.econ.utah.edu/mailman/options/marxism/archive%40mail-archive.com
