I just wanted to add that I'm getting the exact same error. On a fresh, new iMac running 10.6.8, I installed ActivePython 2.6, along with matplotlib for 2.6 on OSX.
Running example code from the matplotlib website, I get the same error-- the window appears with the resizing tools but otherwise blank, and the program throws the listed Tcl error. Any ideas?
