[MCN-L] Institutional image database

2011-05-06 Thread Sarah Puckitt
Hi Charles -
We use EmbARK Collections Management Database for our collection. I was hoping
for a user-friendly, simpler solution for our institutional images. I'm still
looking-!

Again - I appreciate all the input that's come in.

[MCN-L] Wireless video conferencing in the museum space

2011-05-06 Thread Elton Prater
We have a program thru our local Educational Service Center to do remote
outreaches for schools in a twenty county area. We are set up to do the
2 way programs from basically anywhere on our exhibit floors or demo
areas. The system has its own dedicated wi-fi network (5 access points,
router, and T1 line). The main problems we see when working on the floor
are sound related. We usually have to turn off noisy exhibits in a
rather large area around the demo location. And if you happen to have a
school group in house at the same time, it is really hard to communicate
effectively. You end up blocking off a decent chunk of exhibit space to
provide for a good experience on the other end of the conference.

That said, at least in our case, it is definitely worth the hassles. It
lets us serve kids that may not be able to actually get here.
If there is anything else you would like to know, email me.

[MCN-L] Wireless video conferencing in the museum space

2011-05-06 Thread Kelly Richmond
I am curious if any museums have experience using wireless video
conferencing in their gallery spaces -- so not just in a designated room for
video conferencing, but out in the "world" so to speak. I understand the
technical requirements of establishing stable wifi are the initial hurdle,
but what other factors did you need to consider in order for it to work
successfully?
Thanks,
Kelly

[MCN-L] Digital Preservation for Videotape workshop/METRO - June 6th

2011-05-06 Thread Independent Media Arts Preservation

[Please excuse cross-postings]
?
Independent Media Arts Preservation [IMAP]
presents a workshop on

DIGITAL PRESERVATION FOR VIDEOTAPE

Co-sponsored with New York Metropolitan Library Council [METRO]

Monday, June 6, 2011
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
--
If content on analog videotape is to survive for the long term, the tapes must
be digitized - moved from the unstable magnetic media on which the content is
currently held, into the digital realm where - in theory - they can be preserved
indefinitely and migrated forward as files rather than physical objects.?

Digitization, however, means more than simply selecting a destination file
format.? It requires a series of decisions that will determine the long-term
viability of files created - and thus of the valuable video content.?

Workshop topics include:? basic digital file creation, preservation and access
file formats and codecs, software, storage and trusted digital repositories,
workflows for digitization, and technical and preservation metadata. In
addition, participants will examine case studies of small and large-scale
digitization projects in order to understand real-world applications of
principles introduced in the workshop.

PRESENTER
Linda Tadic consults and lectures in areas of digital asset management,
audiovisual and digital preservation, and metadata.? She is Executive Director
of the Audiovisual Archive Network [www.archivenetwork.org], and an adjunct
professor in New York University?s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation
graduate degree program, teaching two core courses:? Collection Management and
Access to Moving Image Collections.?

Ms. Tadic's over 25 years experience working with and managing audiovisual,
digital, and broadcasting collections includes positions of Manager of the
Digital Library at Home Box Office [HBO] and Director of the Media Archives and
Peabody Awards Collection at University of Georgia. She is past Director of
Operations for ARTstor.

Re your question about online options for storage and distribution.

Universal Images Group provides a distribution service and controls rights
management and monetization of images for many Museums, Libraries and
Galleries including: Chicago History Museum, Encyclopaedia Britannica, the
Bridgeman Art Library, Dorling Kindersley (DK Images), the National Portrait
Gallery, the Natural History Museum, The Science Museum and most recently

The New Museum seeks an experienced Digital Archivist to lead the second
phase of the museum's digital archive project. The Digital Archivist will
provide leadership and strategic planning for the project, manage the
museum's physical and digital assets, train staff on best practices,
research and digitize materials, ensure public dissemination and develop new
areas of the archive.

Working hours will be 40 hours/week, 10:00 - 6:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday. The position reports to Deputy Director and works closely with
Information Technology Manager, Curatorial, Education and, External Affairs
departments.

NEW MUSEUM DIGITAL ARCHIVE (background)
http://archive.newmuseum.org

Founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker as an alternative museum site, the New
Museum has been an important platform for emerging theories, cultural
debate, and early exposure and scholarly treatment for important yet under
recognized figures in contemporary art over the last 34 years. Our acclaimed
solo exhibitions and landmark group shows define key moments in contemporary
art history, the evolution of contemporary art institutions, and reflect the
global nature of art today.

Unlike most museum digital archives whose purpose is primarily focused on
object collections, the New Museum's Digital Archive is a groundbreaking
project to archive the programmatic history of an institution - what an art
museum did, not what it owns. Over the past 5 years the museum has been
developing a digital archive of the programmatic activity of the institution
-exhibitions, public programs, performances and publications encompassing
its 34 year history. The digital archive currently contains over 7000 images
and documents, 200 audio recordings, 60 videos, 45 publications and over
4000 artists, curators and authors associated with New Museum. Phase I of
the Archive has accomplished the following. 1) Established infrastructure
and meta-data structures, 2) Digitized and imported primary materials 3)
Launched public website and internal interface. The archive was built and
developed in Collective Access software, an open source code and database
system and uses modifi
 ed Dublin-core metadata standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Preserve the New Museum's history that would otherwise be lost or
inaccessible by organizing and cataloging our current physical and digital
assets;

* Research and digitize materials, manage the selection of the
appropriate formats, and ensure that all items are properly encoded within
the archive;

* Contribute to the development, digitization and implementation of
new digital archive areas not in Phase I including, institutional history,
building architecture, and educational materials, in
