[MCN-L] Cloud Exit Strategy / Termination Policies

2017-01-12 Thread Kate Blanch
Happy new year MCN!
Would anyone have knowledge or samples of a cloud services termination
agreement, policy or SLA with a provider that includes termination activities?
I'm researching materials that are intended to deal with backup, re-migration,
data ownership and transfer, etc. on the chance that the cloud based service
provider goes under, or terminates the service with the customer, or vice versa.
Any ideas around safeguarding or planning for "unclouding" or moving clouds or
having your cloud move on would be helpful! (I
think Mick says it best -- https://youtu.be/O3F4GmbHl5g :))
Have a great day. Thanks, Kate

Re: [MCN-L] Shopify on museum websites

2017-01-12 Thread Brendan Ciecko
Hi Jennifer,

With today's weather, I wish I was outside strolling the deCordova!
Any-who... many years back my previous company (an agency) worked with the
Neue Galerie (and others) to move from UberCart (on Drupal) to Shopify to
power their e-Commerce. Having dealt with UberCart and Shopify, I can
attest that your desire to move to Shopify is a well-supported one!

We handled the project in 2 phases to address initial urgency,
budget/timing, etc.
#1: was to get the new store launched on Shopify, quickly.
#2: focus on responsive / mobile/tablet-friendliness. (at that time,
traffic coming from non-desktop device (smartphone/tablet) was 26.87% and
the store wasn't responsive)
This was back in 2012 / 2013.

Pulled some quick notes from a review and on-going analysis we did to
monitor (and optimize) year after year, and included below.

• We focused on simplifying the user experience, general SEO, and such
resulting in much high conversion rates.
Within the first 90 days:
+80.7% higher online sales compared to the same period of the previous year
/ old store.

• We significantly increased the speed (load-time) by decreasing the "size"
by 83% and other methods.
Why? Drupal / UberCart can get bloated and slow... 40% of people abandon a
website that takes more than 3 seconds to load. And a 1 second delay in
page response can result in a 7% reduction in conversions.

Today, you can find general, easy-to-customize, responsive templates,
making the process of setting up the store fairly easy.

I'd point out is the data migration from UberCart to Shopify can be a bit
challenging. I'll look back at my notes to see what we did about that, if
you're interested. Also, one thing that is often missed in the process is
that the URLs for your products and categories are very likely to change
when moving from one system to the next. You'll want to have your developer
work some magic with .htaccess (or NGINX, depending how you're hosted) for
sake of SEO, getting the same URLs live, or redirecting properly so you
don't break any links.

Happy to chat or share more if I can be helpful!

Regards,
Brendan Ciecko

Re: [MCN-L] Shopify on museum websites

2017-01-12 Thread Mike Ellis
Hi

Bristol Museums in the UK are using it to deliver their POS - they’ve written
about it here:

http://www.labs.bristolmuseums.org.uk/using-shopify-to-run-an-affordable-museum-shop-till-system-pos/

Zak Mensah at Bristol is the man to ask about this - happy to intro if anyone
needs it.

We’re increasingly using it with our clients too, and have done a bit of
wrangling so that it plays nicely with WordPress - simple example here:
https://handelhendrix.org/shop/ where the user doesn’t need to leave the site
to purchase, that sort of thing.

cheers

Mike
