[MCN-L] DAMs
Beth, The best advice I can offer for a selection process of any system once you narrow the field is to prepare a test script. Give the vendor a specific script to follow, with data you provide. This helps you understand exactly much better what a system will and will not do in your environment. Much more helpful than a canned vendor presentation. Learned this from Steve Jacobson of JCA and found it to be an extremely valuable tool in any software selections process. John On Thu, Apr 28, 2011 at 14:09, Beth Heller bheller at americanalpineclub.orgwrote: I just wanted to thank everyone who posted which DAMs they were using and why. I think we are going to explore a bit further with Fedora/Islandora/Solr, but David Dwiggins spent a great deal of time on the phone with me showing me ResourceSpace and it was really impressive. The main thing I've learned is that there is no out-of-the-box one-thing-does-it-all solution, so we will have to sort through which layers will work best together. Anyone who has advice navigating this part of the project will be welcome! Specific costs and vendors/developers and pros and cons of various APIs please! [MCN-L] WiFi Access in Museums
We just installed museum-wide wi-fi. We split the access into two: MIA_wireless for public and MIA_Internal for staff. The MIA_wireless goes out a separate DSL line and does not have access to our internal network. We are working on adding a page where a user agrees to terms of use before connecting. (We have the wording from our attorney). This is similar to most hot spots. The MIA_Internal gives full access to our internal network. The I.S. department is the only one with the security credentials. We are putting these on MIA owned laptops. If anyone wants access from a personal device, we review the appropriateness of the request and enter the credentials on the device. We do not publish the security credentials or make them available outside our department. Smart phones, staff or public, connect to the public network as they do not have the software for our internal network and systems. [MCN-L] Mac vs. PC
Interesting reading all the responses that this post generated. Some emotional and very thoughtful. One point not made is that Apple does not provide the same type of support and advance look on products to enterprises that Microsoft does, it seems to ignore the business market in favor or providing the consumer with the wow factor. And then let consumers work to get Macs, iphones, etc. into the enterprise. It avoids marketing to the enterprise. This is one point that is constantly made in the computer trade press, that Apple seems to intentionally ignore the enterprise market. This doesn't imply that their products are appropriate or not, just that they don't really market to enterprises. So most enterprises will not put any priority in implementing their products. John R. [MCN-L] Intranet Survey - updated
Thank you to those who have participated so far in the Intranet Survey. Unfortunately, during the day yesterday one participant did not realize that the first row was a header row and the column headers got overwritten.I have restored the headers and added a note to indicate that a participant should scroll to the first empty row to enter their information. My apologies to those who entered their information without the benefit of the column headings- you did a great job figuring out the questions on your own. The survey is still open, so feel free to participate, and also it is open to all for viewing Here is the link http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=phY6vmXIwG2bWDc1j_FaIEQ John R. [MCN-L] Intranet survey
We are in the process of developing an Intranet and would be interested in surveying other museums to learn what they have done. Below is link to a Google Doc for this survey that anyone can access, either to participate in the survey or to see what has been posted. You can even add another column if you would like to add a question to the survey. Thank you in advance for being willing to share what you have done at your organization by completing this short survey. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=phY6vmXIwG2bWDc1j_FaIEQ John R. [MCN-L] Annual reports online
Last year we did both print and full color pdf available on-line. This year we eliminated the print version. My understanding is that it was a budget decision to eliminate the print version. I see many institutions do this and they range from plain, no image, and sanitized finances to the full color pdf. I would love to get responses on why and how people are doing this along with any problems. [MCN-L] Digital Asset Management System
We use TMS for Collections Management and Media Bin for DAMS. We do a nightly one way synch of metadata from TMS to Media Bin. We are working on linking the images back to TMS with some insight from our colleagues at the Met. We are always willing to share our experiences; the good, the bad and the ugly. We are planning to upgrade soon to TMS as our CMS. With this, we are also looking into a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) that will speak with relative ease with TMS. I was curious as to what other Museums that are using TMS as their CMS use as their DAMS and what their experiences have been with whatever DAMS they currently use. We use Artifax, which was customized for us for school tours. We do not charge for school tours, so there is no payments and receipts, but I believe that they have that function. Currently, we use Vista which is way more than we need. Someone please tell me that there is something simpler and cheaper out there. We just updated the program and lost a custom report. I've been looking into Microsoft's Expression Media application, but would like something with a web-based browsing ability. Another requirement is that we don't have to move the files off-site, such as with using something like Flickr. I would like them to sit on our server and be accessible via a web-browser so that we can just link to these images from our website. Any suggestions? Our museum collection is comprised of Art, Cultural History, Military History and Ethnology artifacts, and we're very pleased with the way the application handles our data. As Kate noted, setting field standards is an essential element to the usability of your system and information. Cuadra also has a STAR/Archives application - your Archives data would be housed in separate databases, but I know that they have been working on cross-application searching through their STAR Web interface. The Virginia Historical Society uses Cuadra's Museum app, Archives app, and Library app, so they would be a good contact for any additional information.
