Dear ARLIS/NA Members, Friends, and Colleagues,

On behalf of the entire conference planning committee, we are delighted to
announce that the conference program and registration are now available for
ARLIS/NA?s 42nd Annual Conference. We look forward to welcoming you to
Washington, DC from May 1-5, 2014, and are excited to share the conference
program with its full complement of sessions, workshops, tours, and special
events. After you have explored the program, please visit the conference
website?s registration page to complete your online registration.

In addition to program information, the ARLIS/NA 42nd Annual Conference Web
Site provides many helpful links to make your hotel reservations, arrange
transportation upon your arrival by plane, train, or car, and see a list of
exhibitors who will be attending. This year?sconference hotel, the Grand
Hyatt, is in the heart of downtown DC, easily accessible by Metro, and within
walking distance to the city?s best museums and restaurants. If the last time
you visited Washington, DC was on an eighth grade class trip, we encourage
you to rediscover the city. Come and enjoy such events as the Reception at
Dumbarton Oaks, explore the magnificent Jefferson Building of the Library of
Congress and hear NPR Special correspondent Susan Stamberg at the Convocation
and Reception, and join tours to Baltimore, George Washington?s Mount Vernon,
the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio-Visual Conservation,
Hillwood Museum and Gardens, the Diplomatic Rooms at the Department of State,
the National Gallery of Art, and the Folger Shakespeare Library, to name but
a few. The Capitol Hill/Eastern Market, Dupont Circle, H Street NE, and
Georgetown neighborhoods will also be the focus of scheduled and self-guided
tours. Several libraries within a two-mile radius of the conference hotel
will take part in a Local Libraries Open House to display special collections
 just for ARLIS/NA attendees.

There are many opportunities to serve as a conference volunteer and we hope
you will consider contributing some of your time to make this a successful
conference. When you complete your online registration you will have the
chance to indicate in what capacity you would like to volunteer. A member of
the conference planning committee will be available to assist you in
 selecting an assignment.

The Conference Networking Program is also key to a successful conference. The
program pairs first- or second-time conference attendees with experienced
ARLIS/NA members who serve as guides to show newcomers the conference ropes
and make introductions to new colleagues. We encourage conference veterans to
give back to the organization in this meaningful way. To participate as a
guide or newcomer please complete theConference Networking form by Tuesday,
 April 15.

In the weeks to come, be sure to visit the conference blog to learn about
conference program highlights and local information, and visit the conference
Pinterest and Facebook pages for local members' suggestions about things to
do and see in the nation's capital. Follow the conference Twitter feed for
regular updates before and during the conference.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions. We hope to see you in the

[MCN-L] VRA White Paper

2009-06-05 Thread Maureen Burns
Greetings MCN Members:

In response to the current economic climate that has impacted the
institutions where our visual resources facilities reside, the VRA
Board has asked me to form an authoring group (see below) to produce
a white paper that will not only address salient issues but also
suggest options for dealing with the evolving visual resources
landscape. This document will demonstrate that visual resources
professionals and the facilities they manage actively contribute to
an institution's mission and technological future by providing
necessary expertise, assets, services and learning spaces.

The VRA Board along with a cadre of reviewers from the visual
resources community, affiliated organizations (ARLIS, CAA, MCN, etc.)
and beyond will be enlisted to comment on the draft to ensure it is
useful and will resonate with faculty, administrators and others
outside the visual resources profession.

As a first step, we are presently trying to think through ideal VRC
scenarios in academic departments/schools, transferring operations to
libraries, diversifying by adding IT and/or AV responsibilities, or
adjusting roles in museum contexts. To help us with this work, we
encourage image professionals who have been engaged in redefining
their role and that of their facility to share their experience by
contacting Elizabeth Schaub by June 10th, who will be focused on the
case studies section of the paper; in addition, she may communicate
the information you provide to the appropriate workers in the
authoring group who may want to dialog with you.

We are drafting this document over the next month in order to make
the information available as soon as possible. If you need
information sooner or have any suggestions, questions, or concerns
about this white paper process, please contact Maureen Burns.

[MCN-L] Fwd: [ARLIS-L] Call for Papers: ARLIS/NA 38th Annual Conference (Boston, MA) - Deadline: June 22, 2009

2009-06-04 Thread Maureen Burns
Please excuse the cross-posting, but here is the call for papers for
the ARLIS/N conference in Boston April 22-27, 2010. With the recent
discussion about advanced degrees useful for museum technology, MCN
members might find this conference to be particularly useful to
better understand the lay of the land.

Best regards,
Maureen

ARLIS/NA 38th Annual Conference - Call for Papers

Revolution and Innovation: At the Hub of Discovery

The ARLIS/NA 38th Annual Conference will explore revolution and
innovation within art librarianship and visual resources
librarianship as new technologies, economic changes and other
factors transform our profession. Rapid change creates
opportunities to embrace new ways of exploring the issues librarians
face daily. How have you responded to the changes in the
information landscape? What innovative methods have you developed
to resolve the problems that have arisen from all these new
developments? How have collaborations amongst colleagues, peers,
institutions and more changed how you work?

Individuals are invited to submit proposals for papers that provoke
critical exchange and debate as well as practical advice and
solutions in relation to the broad thematic areas referred to below.
Submissions are encouraged that support opportunities for
interaction between participants and enable the conference to engage
in a truly interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and viewpoints.

Individuals wishing to contribute paper abstract proposals for the
ARLIS/NA 38th Annual Conference must submit a 250 word abstract for
review by the Conference Program Committee. All abstracts must be
submitted electronically using the online form available below.

The abstract submission deadline is June 22, 2009. Abstracts
received after the submission deadline will automatically be placed
on the waiting list

Abstract guidelines can be found in the online submission
form. Incomplete abstracts will not be reviewed.

Thematic Areas

The following themes have been identified as the main interests of
conference attendees from the conference evaluation and planning
surveys. The themes are purposefully broad. The questions have
been written to prompt and suggest possible platforms for discussion
and debate. The Program Committee welcomes responses that extend and
develop these themes in areas that will engage attendees in sharing
different perspectives and provoke speculation about the future
direction and development of art librarianship in the twenty first century.

Future of Art and Visual Resources Librarianship
* As academic institutions look to cut their budgets, will
art/architecture/visual resources libraries become merged with main
 libraries? Is this an opportunity?
* Digital libraries and repositories will begin taking advantage
of full text searchability. Where do catalogers fit into this new
 view of access?
* Considering today's tight budgets, how much metadata is enough
 when working with less support?
* How do you increase your visibility on campus? What novel
ways do you advocate for your library's services?
* How have you developed grant proposals for projects in your
library? What were the challenges and what surprised you?
* How do you satisfy customers in an increasingly 24/7 instant
access world? What do you do differently?
* Going beyond statistics, how do you know that you are
providing patrons with the services and resources that they want?
What are some inventive and successful measures that your library
has taken to determine patron satisfaction?
* Do corporate or business customer service practices such as
secret shoppers have a place in libraries? Have any libraries
used any of these methods successfully?
Collection Development
* In light of the current economic climate, what strategies have
you developed to provide quality resources for your community?
* How do we provide access to information and ideas that are
being created in technologies that have not been traditionally
supported by libraries? How do we preserve that knowledge?
* Is this an opportunity for collaborative collection
development? Why or why not will collaborative collection
 development take root?
* How do libraries balance fulfilling the patron's desire for
digital content with the realities of the heavily print nature of
 art, architecture and design publishing?
Emerging Technologies
* How have you successfully created solutions using emerging
technologies such as open source programs, mobile technologies,
 mashups and more?
* Taking advantage of new technologies, what unique projects
have you successfully collaborated on with your colleagues
 (library, IT, etc.)?
Reference and Instruction
* With reduced staffing, who should be answering questions at
 the reference desk?
* What are some strategies being employed by libraries to
 provide reference and instruction to

[MCN-L] Fwd: [ARLIS-L] Call for Sessions for ARLIS/NA 2010 in Boston, MA

2009-06-04 Thread Maureen Burns
A follow-up clarification on the ARLIS call for Boston below. This
should allow for even more flexibility if MCN members would like to
participate.
Best wishes,
Maureen

We are not doing a Call for Sessions for ARLIS/NA in Boston. We
have instead sent out a separate Call for Papers and Call for Workshops.

WHAT IS A CALL FOR PAPERS?

The Call for Papers will be looking for individual proposals for
papers on thematic areas. The call does not ask for a fully
finished paper or even a published paper. It asks for a 250 word
abstract about the topic you'd like to present.

We are not accepting proposals for whole sessions.

HOW CAN I MAKE MY SESSION IDEA INTO A PAPER?

* Take one of the ideas you have for a speaker and submit an
 abstract about the topic.
* Take one of your ideas and find someone who'd be interested in
speaking on that topic and ask them to submit an abstract.
* Take one of your ideas and ask on ARLIS-L if anyone is
interested in submitting an abstract on that topic.
* If you already had a session with different speakers in mind,
contact those people and ask them to submit abstracts along similar
 topic lines.
There's no rules against coordinating! But we also don't guarantee
that you will be placed together!

HOW WILL YOU ORGANIZE THE PAPERS? HOW WILL SESSIONS BE CREATED?

The Program Committee and the CPAC will review the ideas for papers
and group the papers into sessions. In the early fall, there will
be a Call for Moderators. The moderators will work on the
individual sessions, working with speakers to ensure that they will
present in the time allotted, work with the conference planning
committee to obtain appropriate AV equipment, etc. This will give
members another opportunity to be involved with the conference. At
that time, there will also be a Call for Poster Sessions, which will
give us more flexibility to address some of the topics that arise
after the sessions have been set, such as projects and other topics
of interest. It also gives more time to the membership to think
about the things they'd like to share with their colleagues.

WHY ARE YOU MAKING THIS CHANGE?

We've analyzed the data from the two surveys we sent to ARLIS-L
about the conference, and we've noticed some trends that we've
incorporated into our program planning. You indicated that you
wanted high-quality sessions, and you've also indicated that you'd
like to see changes in how sessions are structured and more variety
in session lengths. More people would have liked opportunities to
be involved in the sessions, but the process is not always clear at times.

As a result, we're doing something different for this conference!

I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS!

If you have any questions, please contact the Program Co-Chairs,
Jennifer Friedman (mailto:jrfried at mit.edujrfried at mit.edu) or Ann
Whiteside (mailto:awhites at mit.eduawhites at mit.edu).

[MCN-L] Fwd: MCN Liaison for ARLIS

2009-05-18 Thread Maureen Burns
Greetings MCNers,

I've been trying to be a conduit of information between ARLIS and MCN
for the last few years. As the ARLIS liaison to MCN, I forward
information between the two listservs to share relevant postings
related to annual meetings, activities, etc. looking for areas of
overlap or commonality. Since I'm a member of both organizations and
belong to both listserves, I'm happy to continue this work. However,
since I have been doing this for a few years, if anyone else is
interested in being the ARLIS liaison to MCN, I thought I would put
this query out there. Please let me know if anyone might be
interested and I will be happy to hook you up with the appropriate
ARLIS Board members. Meanwhile, if you have any interesting ideas
about how to better connect and communicate between ARLIS and MCN,
they are welcome and I will continue to do this. Thank you.

Best wishes,
Maureen

[MCN-L] Fwd: [ARLIS-L] FW: ARLIS Denver Conference

2008-02-21 Thread Maureen Burns
In case any MCN members might be interested in attending,
registration is open for the ARLIS/NA conference in Denver at
http://arlisna-mw.lib.byu.edu/denver2008/. There is a terrific
program with informative sessions, great exhibits, and special events
including:
ARLIS/NA invites you to A Big DAM Party! at the Denver Art
Museum. Designed by Daniel Libeskind (who is best known for his work
on the Jewish Museum in Berlin and his design for the World Trade
Center site in New York), the Frederic C. Hamilton extension of the
museum opened in fall 2006, sparking controversy locally and drawing
visitors from across the nation and around the world.

In addition, they are trying something new on the technology front
that might be of interest:
With the world of information and information-sharing in constant
flux, we are all challenged to keep abreast of trends in library
resources and technologies, so we can provide innovative services to
our users. Share what you know and what you are doing to enhance
your library's offerings. Virtual poster sessions will complement the
real-time conference session, What's Hot and What's Not: Incoming
and Outgoing Technologies and Services that takes place at the
Conference Center on Sunday, May 4, 11:30 am-12:30 pm.
http://arlisna-mw.lib.byu.edu/denver2008/program_sessions.htm
Virtual poster sessions (url or ppt file) may describe an innovative
library program, analyze a problem and its new and/or creative
solution, and/or report research findings. To apply, email your
proposal by February 15, 2008, to Joan Stahl, session moderator
(jstahl at umd.edu). Your proposal must include:
Your Name and Contact Information
Title of Poster Session
Abstract (200words or less)
Bethany Sewell and Jason Aubin are developing a virtual poster site
at http://arlisnamw.wordpress.com/virtual-poster-sessions/. This is
currently a work in progress. Meanwhile, the guidelines that have
been developed for the physical posters, many of which apply to the
virtual posters, will be helpful and can be viewed at

Special Issue on Arts Technology

Call for Manuscripts

The Journal for Learning through the Arts is a peer-reviewed,
on-line journal published by the Center for Learning through the
Arts at the University of California, Irvine. It provides a forum
for discussing all aspects of learning that integrate the visual and
performing arts within K-12, community, or higher education settings.

Submissions are invited from university faculty, researchers,
teaching artists, and school district personnel who have explored
the link between learning and the arts through deliberate and
disciplined integration of the arts (1) across arts disciplines, (2)
with other academic content areas, and/or (3) into community-based
educational programs.

Articles discuss theory and practice, highlight current research,
and review teaching and professional materials of interest to
language arts educators. Examples may be viewed at:

Arts and the link to submit an article can be accessed at:
http://repositories.cdlib.org/clta/lta/

Submission Deadline February 1, 2008

We're interested in how experience of the arts is mediated by
technology. With an ever expanding array of technological
tools--blogs, wikis, mashups, podcasts, virtual worlds, video games,
etc.--how do arts educators keep up with their students and harness
such popular developments for educational purposes? What art forms
have come into being that would not be possible without technology?
How do we train teaching artists to integrate technology and
aesthetics? Can multimedia digital arts be considered a new discipline?

With the explosion of digital arts resources, how do educators
maximize their potential for enhancing student learning? What new
opportunities has technology opened up for students to share their
creative activities with others? In what ways do virtual communities
create new venues for artists to interact with audiences? How has
technology affected the museum and/or concert experience? What
advantages (and drawbacks) are there to preserving live performance
through audio and/or video recordings?

To: VRA-L at LISTSERV.UARK.EDU

Dear VRA members,

I would like to provide a little more information about the travel awards
to build on last week's announcement. These awards are for travel and
attendance at the VRA's Silver Jubilee conference in Kansas City, MO,
March 27 to April 1, 2007.

This year we have a total of 11 awards available:
. Six (6) Luraine Tansey Travel Awards ($750 each)
. The Archivision Corporate-sponsored Travel Award ($750)
. The Gallery Systems Corporate-sponsored Travel Award ($750)
. The Kathe Albrecht Award ($750)
. The Davis Art Images Award, for an international member ($1,000)
. The Saskia, Ltd. Award, for an international member ($1,000)

In addition, we are offering several Top-Up Awards this year: funding of
$250 to $500 for members with only partial institutional funding.

You can see a preliminary schedule for the conference at
http://www.vraweb.org/conferences.html to assist with your conference
planning and application. The cost for half-day workshops will be $55
each; costs for full-day workshops, tours and other special events will be
announced in the coming weeks.

AWARD CRITERIA: Travel awards are granted to eligible VRA members who wish
to participate in the annual conference, demonstrate financial need and
clearly describe their expected benefits of attendance. Other
considerations used in applicant evaluation are: new member/first-time
attendance at a VRA annual conference; veteran professional attendance;
international member participation; and level of conference participation.
Note: You are not eligible if you have won a VRA Travel Award in the past
three years (2004-2006).

AWARD APPLICATION: Applicants must provide the committee with a complete
and accurate application form. The application form is now available on
the VRA website in the MemberClicks section http://www.vraweb.org (Note:
you must be a VRA member to log in). Your application should indicate how
you meet any of the above-listed award criteria and, in specific terms,
should detail how you expect to benefit from conference attendance. The
application form also includes a 'projected expenses' section for
demonstration of financial need.

Before you apply, please read the document Tips for Travel Award
Applicants, which is linked at the top of the application page. Before
you submit your application, remember to print it for your records; you
will receive a confirmation by email after you submit, but not a copy of
your full submission.

Application Deadline: November 7, 2006, 5pm Eastern Time.

Travel Award recipients will be notified no later than November 28, and
must confirm in writing that they will be able to attend the conference.
A recipient must commit to attend at least 50% of the conference in order
to accept an award. Awards are made as checks in U.S. dollars for North
American recipients, and as cashiers checks in U.S. dollars for
international recipients. The Travel Award checks will be presented at
the VRA Annual Business Meeting during the conference. Post-conference,
recipients are required to submit a summary report and receipts totaling
the amount of their award to the VRA Executive Board.

[MCN-L] Fwd: 2007 Travel Awards for VRA Kansas City conference

2006-10-12 Thread Maureen Burns

A colleague asked me to forward this message below to MCN members in
an open invitation to apply and participate in the annual VRA
conference this Spring.

Best regards,
Maureen

Dear VRA members,

I am happy to announce the Travel Awards for the Silver Jubilee conference
in Kansas City. This year we are announcing the 2007 awards earlier than
usual, with an earlier deadline for submission. We hope that by doing
this we can inform the recipients much sooner, who in turn can register
and get in to workshops and other events that may fill up early. The new
deadline for receipt of applications will be Tuesday, November 7, 2006.

A preliminary conference schedule with a listing of most workshops and
sessions will be posted on the VRA website late tomorrow (October 13).
This information will be supplemented as things are confirmed, so please
check back regularly: http://www.vraweb.org/conferences.html In
addition, Rebecca Moss has provided the basic information for budgeting
purposes:

Dates: March 27 - April 1, 2007
Pre-registration costs: $175 for members, $325 for non-members
Room rates (at conference hotel): $149 for single or double room

We have very good news about the Travel Awards this year. There will be
nine (9) awards of $750 available (6 Tansey Fund awards, 2 corporate
awards from Gallery Systems and Archivision, plus the brand-new Kathe
Albrecht award). In addition, there are two (2) corporate awards of
$1,000 each for international members (from Davis Art Images and Saskia,
Ltd.). We also have a new form of funding assistance to offer for 2007:
Top-Up Awards. These are for applicants with some institutional support
but who need to supplement it - the awards range from $250 to $500. A big
thank-you goes out to all our Corporate Sponsors and to Kathe Albrecht for
their support of this program!

The application form this year will be available (very soon) in the
MemberClicks section of the VRA website (thanks to Chris Hilker for
putting together this easy to use form!). Before you apply, please read
the document Tips for VRA Travel Awards Applicants, which will be linked
at the top of the form as well as the main website (I will send the link
when it's available). Two notes about eligibility: you must be a VRA
member to apply, and you cannot have won a VRA Travel Award in the last
three years (2004-2006)

Stay tuned and watch VRA-L and the VRA website for further details
about the conference and posting of related documents.

Best wishes,
Jackie Spafford

[MCN-L] Fwd: 35th Annual ARLIS/NA Conference Atlanta

1970-01-01 Thread Maureen Burns
Forwarded for a colleague. Please see below and forgive cross postings.
Best regards,
Maureen

Dear colleagues,

As the Publications/Publicity Coordinator for the ARLIS/NA 35th
Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA (April 26th - 30th), I would like
to invite you to check the conference website at
http://www.arlis-se.org/Atlanta2007/http://www.arlis-se.org/Atlanta2007/
for newly added information, including program information, travel
and hotel updates and registration prices.

The theme of this year's conference is At the Crossroads: inside,
outside, past, present, future. This reflects Atlanta's place as a
transportation and cultural hub as well as our celebration of the
past and the future as we commemorate the Society's 35th
Anniversary. The conference planning committee is organizing an
outstanding program for our 35th Conference. Please keep checking
the website for further updates. We look forward to seeing you in
Atlanta in 2007!
