[MCN-L] Deadline Extended to April 7: Media Technology Muse Awards

2014-04-06 Thread Susan Hazan

Deadline Extended to April 7: Media Technology Muse Awards

The deadline for submissions to the Media Technology Muse awards has been
extended to April 7!

Recognizing outstanding achievement in Galleries, Libraries, Archives or
Museums (GLAM) media, the international Alliance Media Technology
Professional Network presents the 25th annual Muse Awards competition. Honoring
institutions or independent producers who use digital media to enhance the GLAM
experience and engage audiences, the Muse Awards celebrate scholarship,
community, innovation, creativity, education and inclusiveness.

Projects must be produced by or for a GLAM, and may include websites, podcasts,
multimedia installations, games, interactive kiosks, apps and much more.
Winning projects for each category are chosen by an international group of GLAM
technology professionals and the awards will be presented at the 2014 Annual
Meeting 25th Anniversary Awards in Seattle and winners will be showcased at the
Media Technology Breakfast (so get your tickets now!).

Visit the Muse Awards home page for a full list of categories, criteria, past
winners and to submit an online entry form before time runs out!

[MCN-L] We need your help - User-generated content and user participation in GLAMS

2013-05-29 Thread Susan Hazan
User-created content is an integral part of the online experience. From
slideshows on Flickr to articles on Wikipedia, from discussions on Twitter to
cat videos on YouTube, millions of users produce and disseminate new content
every day. Very often this micro-production takes place outside of institutions
but some successful pioneers have shown that user-created content can become a
valuable resource for galleries, libraries, archives and museums.

We are interested in finding out how important user-created content is for our
sector and we are sure that you are too. What we would like to explore is how
user-created content circulates in the culture heritage sector. Who uses it and
how? Who doesn't use it and why not? What can we learn from each other and what
kind of services could the Europeana Network offer to turn user-created content
into true assets for its stakeholders?

The Europeana Network Task Force on User-Generated Content would like to find
out, but we can only do so with your help!

If you are curious to know how important user-created content is for the GLAM
community then please complete our survey until the 28th of May. It only takes
8 minutes and we will share the results with you this autumn on the LinkedIn
page of the Europeana Network, the Europeana Pro Blog and during the annual
general meeting of the Europeana Network:

 Hi -

I am interested in knowing if anyone is using Facebook for their
institutions, and if so, if they are using a page, a group or both.

We have a Facebook page and a bunch of 'fans' and are trying to figure out
the best way to take advantage of this group. We recently tried to invite
our fans to an event, but it was sent out as a page update, and we received
very few responses. I am under the impression that if we are are a group,
rather than a page we can communicate more actively with those interested in
 us.

I'd love to hear from anyone with any experience and/or suggestions on this

We currently have 98 members - please feel free to join in the discussion...

As we are all acutely aware, there are many discussions taking place
online on a host of different subjects that interests the museum
community. There are also many, many platforms to choose from (this
one included) that enable these discussions to take place.

This discussion group is dedicated to museums who have decided to
represent their institution on Facebook, and not unsurprisingly, it
takes place on Facebook. You are welcome to join in the discussion if
your own institution has decided to set up your own Facebook

Hi all,

we've just deployed the second phase of the steve.museum tagging
experiment. at http://tagger.steve.museum

the steve tagger (a piece of open-source software) is a key tool in
our IMLS-funded study of the contribution social tagging and
folksonomy can make to on-line access to art collections. throughout
our experiement we'll be varying the interface of the tagger to find
out what encourages tagging, and we'll also be studying the results
of tags, to see if they are:

 - real words (we're using word net)
 - terms from our discipline (we're using the AAT and ULAN)
 - new to the museum (we're comparing to museum documentation)
 - appropriate to the work of art (we're doing term-by-term
review).

we're looking forward to sharing the results of our study with the
community. If you'd like to participate, please come by. [it's ok if
you don't work in an art museum -- and ok if you do!]

 Go to http://tagger.steve.museum
 - create an account [this is important for our research]
 - Tag Art!
Thanks.

Request for help - correlation between website visits and realvisitors.

2005-01-20 Thread Susan Hazan

Apologies for cross-posting...
This is a request for help to museum website managers.
Please respond off-list to sha...@netvision.net.il

I am researching the impact on new media in the museum and am interested
in the quantitative correlation between website visits and real
visitors.

I would be grateful if you would share with me your statistics for the
year 2004 on annual number of Real Visitors to your
museum and the annual number of Web Visits of the same year.

Please indicated whether you measure your web visits by Visits,
Hits, or Page Views.

The Visits report reveals the total number of times that people
have visited your web site during the selected report period.

The Hits report shows the number of requests for files–or
hits–logged during the selected report period. A hit is a
request to your web server for a file such as a web page, image, CGI,
header request, etc.

The Page Views report shows the total number of web site pages
that have been viewed during the selected report period.

With thanks

Susan Hazan

[MCN-L] Security Lapse Exposes Personal Facebook Photos

1970-01-13 Thread Susan Hazan

Any chance these constant headlines about Facebook privacy problems
are trying to ...tell us something?

Yes ... that the Internet, social networks, instant messaging systems
and email clients tend to mess things up, let in spam, and Trojan
horses, grant access to files that are not are not rightfully yours
while silo-ing off others for no appropriate reason ... I would
recommend shunning anything that has a modem or router attached to it
or, just to be sure, steer clear away from anything that needs
electricity to turn itself on ...
