[MCN-L] VALA2014 Conference - Would You Like to Help Review Papers? Reply by 1 August
Dear Colleague, VALA2014: Streaming with Possibilities As you may be aware, papers (except for keynote speakers and invited papers) published in VALA conference proceedings are peer-reviewed in accordance with HERDC guidelines. The VALA2014 Programme Committee is looking for people to take on the role of independent reviewer for the VALA2014 conference papers that are due to be submitted on 16 September 2013. Reviewers would be asked to read and comment on about two or three papers (the more reviewers we have, the fewer papers each receives), and are provided with guidelines/comment forms to assist them with rating the papers. Papers and guidelines will be distributed by email, and reviewers will be asked to complete the task within *two* weeks of receiving the papers. If a paper has to be revised (most do), then it will have to be reviewed again after revision, and this will also need to be done in two weeks. Papers are due mid-September, and it is anticipated that most papers will be distributed to reviewers by early to mid-October. Each paper is reviewed by at least two reviewers, and then the reviews are combined anonymously and returned to the authors. Following this, authors are given up to three weeks for revisions, and on receipt revised papers are re-reviewed. This would take the process to late November (all being well). It is, of course, possible that there may be delays with particular papers (illness, etc.), which would result in the process starting and finishing later. Any reviewers whose paper(s) will be delayed will be advised in advance if possible. Please remember that the aim is to be able to distribute abstracts according to areas of skill, but also, as much as possible, to give each reviewer about the same workload. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. If you are interested in being considered for the review panel, we would like you to do the following, please. 1. Download the reviewing skills spreadsheet from www.vala.org.au/reviewing2014 and complete it, to help with gathering information about your skills. 2. Complete the spreadsheet, as described below. This should take around three minutes to complete and email back to me at editor at vala.org.au ASAP, please, but no later than Thursday 1 August 2013. 3. In your covering email, please supply us with 50-100 words about yourself, *full* contact information (including secondary email addresses and phone numbers), plus any spread of dates between now and Christmas when you will not be available for reviewing. **Even if you have reviewed for VALA before, we ask that you please complete this task, to simplify the process.** (That is, don't tell us that we know your skills and expect us to complete the spreadsheetgrin.) In the spreadsheet, the first column is the list of topics we arrived at for the Call for Papers. The second column asks you to insert your name and institution at the top (overwrite what is there), and then the rest of the column shows each cell marked with the default value of O (for OK). Please change the value of O as follows: Y If you are relatively strong in that area (please use Caps Lock) N If you are really not familiar with the area (please use Caps Lock) *Topics remaining as O will be considered as OK for you to review if necessary*. Please complete and return to me at editor at vala.org.au by **Thursday 1 August 2013** with details in the covering email as requested above, so that we can compile the list of skills and allocate papers taking into account this information and any known possible conflicts of interest. Please feel free to pass on this message. Many thanks Alyson Kosina VALA Editor VALA - Libraries, Technology and the Future Inc. Reg No A0011933K ABN 75 344 574 577 P.O. [MCN-L] VALA Event - Wednesday 27 March 2013 - Technolust
Dear Colleague, Please feel free to pass on this email. VALA Event Topic: Technolust: the fifth column of the information counter-revolution Guest Presenter: Hugh Rundle AALIA (CP) Information Management and Kew Librarian, City of Boroondara As libraries see their funding reduced and their relevance questioned across the world, they are eager to introduce and use new technologies to remain valued and vibrant. In this talk, Hugh will argue that in a rush to remain relevant, it is easy for librarians to unwittingly support and champion technologies that oppose the values upon which our profession is based. He will also highlight some of the technology projects libraries are successfully running without compromising their commitment to openness, confidentiality and freedom. About our Speaker: Hugh Rundle is Information Management and Kew Librarian at the City of Boroondara. Mal Booth, University Librarian at UTS, recently wrote that Hugh is now one of the leading thinkers with regard to libraries in Australia. Then again, David Lankes of Syracuse University has accused him of the worst bit of logical reasoning I've seen in quite a bit of time, which just goes to show the value of a thorough literature review. Hugh is active on Twitter and writes a blog called It's not about the books at www.hughrundle.net Please Register: your interest in attending by logging on to our website - www.vala.org.au. This talk will follow the (brief) business of the Special General Meeting, as previously advised to VALA members. [MCN-L] VALA General Meeting - VALA Presents David Lee King with Hamish Curry - Friday 23 September - Register **Now**
***Apologies for cross-postings*** Dear Colleague, Please feel free to pass on this message. VALA - Libraries, Technology and the Future Inc. NOTICE OF MEETING Friday 23 September 2011 ** Note Different Venue ** Majorca Room, 1st Floor, City Library, 253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VALA is delighted to present David Lee King with Hamish Curry Freak Out, Geek Out, or Seek Out: Trends, Transformations, and Change in Libraries Speaker: David Lee King Digital Branch Services Manager at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, USA Putting IT back in Reality Speaker: Hamish Curry Education and Onsite Learning Manager at the State Library of Victoria When: 2.00pm to 5.00pm on 23 September 2011. Where: The Majorca Room, City Library, 253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne Victoria 3000 Cost: $33 incl GST. Afternoon tea is included Freak Out, Geek Out, or Seek Out: Trends, Transformations, and Change in Libraries We have a choice with technology change - we can freak out about it, jump in unprepared, or seek out the best tools and trends for our libraries... and plan for those! David describes the current social media transformation taking place, and applies those changes to a library setting. Then David also discusses the changes a library needs to make to meet and participate in our new online, participatory world, and provides pointers to plan for these changes. David Lee King is the Digital Branch Services Manager at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, where he plans, implements, and experiments with emerging technology trends. He speaks internationally about emerging trends, website management, digital experience, and social media, and has been published in many library-related journals. David was named a Library Journal Mover and Shaker for 2008, and published his first book, Designing the Digital Experience, in 2009. His second book will be published in 2011. David writes the Wired Library column in Public Libraries Magazine with Michael Porter, and maintains a blog at http://www.davidleeking.com Putting IT back in Reality Some have likened libraries as museums for information handling in the industrial age. If only they knew what you were really up to, right? If technology is shaping learning and literacy, then the evolution of social media, video games, and an app-for-everything is a sure sign libraries better get on board the information freight train, onsite and online. Re-thinking the way we partner and deliver library programs is the first step. This presentation will highlight the strong correlation between library services in the web world and the real world, and how ?merging? them onsite and ?mirroring? them online can stimulate new networks and new audiences for libraries. Hamish Curry is the Education and Onsite Learning Manager at the State Library of Victoria. As a teacher with 14 years experience, in the UK, Japan, and six years coordinating a city campus in Melbourne, he understands the importance of engagement and creativity in stimulating learning. In his work at the State Library, information and technology go hand-in-hand with amazing collections and exhibitions, and an array of education workshops, online resources and innovative public programs. Cost: $33 incl GST. Go to www.vala.org.au and register now - places are strictly limited Alyson Kosina Executive Officer VALA - Libraries, Technology and the Future Inc. [MCN-L] VALA2010 - Would You Like to Help Review Papers? Reply By September 22
Apologies for cross-postings - please feel free to pass on this email ***All replies to this email should be sent to vala at vala.org.au*** Dear Colleague, VALA2010: CONNECTIONS, CONTENT, CONVERSATIONS As you may be aware, papers (except for keynote speakers and invited papers) published in VALA conference proceedings are peer-reviewed in accordance with HERDC guidelines. The VALA2010 Programme Committee is looking for people to take on the role of independent reviewer for the VALA2010 conference papers that are being submitted now. Details of the conference programme are available from www.vala.org.au/vala2010/prog2010.htm, and you will see that, among other keynote speakers, we have Stephanie Orlic, from the Louvre Museum. Reviewers would be asked to read and comment on about two or three papers (the more reviewers we have, the fewer papers each receives), and are provided with guidelines/comment forms to assist them with rating the papers. Papers and guidelines will be distributed by email, and reviewers will be asked to complete the task within two weeks of receiving the papers. If a paper has to be revised (most do), then it will have to be reviewed again after revision, and this will also need to be done in two weeks. Papers are due mid-September, and it is anticipated that most papers will be distributed to reviewers by early to mid-October. Each paper is reviewed by at least 2 reviewers, then the reviews are combined and returned to the authors. Following this, authors are given two weeks for revisions, and on receipt rewritten papers are re-reviewed. This would take the process to mid to late November (all being well). Each abstract will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. If you are interested in being considered for the review panel, we would like you to do the following, please. ? Download the reviewing skills spreadsheet from www.vala.org.au/revw2010.htm and complete it, to help with gathering information about your skills. ? Complete the spreadsheet, as described below. This should take around five minutes to complete and email back to me at vala at vala.org.au, ASAP, please, but no later than Tuesday 22 September. ? In your covering email, please supply us with 50-100 words about yourself, *full* contact information, plus any spread of dates between now and Christmas when you will not be available for reviewing. All emails to vala at vala.org.au ? do *not* use the Reply button in your email program. **Even if you have reviewed for VALA before, we ask that you please complete this task, to simplify the process.** In the spreadsheet, the first column is the list (now in alpha order) of topics we arrived at for the Call for Papers. Please complete and return to me at vala at vala.org.au by **Tuesday 22 September**, so that we can compile the list of skills and allocate papers taking into account this information and any known possible conflicts of interest. Many thanks Alyson Kosina Executive Officer VALA - Libraries, Technology and the Future Inc. Reg No A0011933K ABN 75 344 574 577 P.O.
