[MCN-L] Call for Papers: Feminism and Museums

2016-09-28 Thread Graeme Farnell
CALL FOR PAPERS: FEMINISM AND MUSEUMS
Edited by Dr Jenna Ashton

We invite international submissions for our forthcoming book, Feminism and
Museums: Intervention, Disruption and Change, which we'll be publishing
next year (2017), to be edited by Dr Jenna Ashton (Manchester Metropolitan
University). Proposals should be submitted by Monday 21 November 2016.
Please feel free to forward this information to colleagues who may have a
special interest.

A copy of the full Call for Papers may be downloaded from:
http://bit.ly/FemMus

This year, feminist activists The Guerrilla Girls stage their latest
exhibition (and first in the UK), showcasing a survey of 400 European
galleries and revealing that museums still fail to reflect the full
diversity of art activity and art history. The anonymous art collective’s
methods of disruption range from site-specific protests and performances to
research, publications, posters and billboards. All the while remaining
anonymous in their gorilla masks.

Many other feminist curatorial projects continue to challenge the exclusion
or misrepresentation of women’s histories and cultural activities. As long
ago as 1913, in the first disruptive feminist act, three suffragettes
attacked a number of pictures in Manchester Art Gallery as part of the
campaign for women’s votes. More recently, artists such as Judy Chicago
have created activist pieces aiming to redress the absence of women’s
creativity and cultural heritage in museums; while academics such as Linda
Nochlin in her seminal essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?”
have analysed the sexual politics underpinning the exclusion of women from
cultural canons.

Feminism and Museums: Intervention, Disruption and Change will bring
together case studies and analyses of recent feminist actions,
interventions and disruptions which aim to directly impact and influence
collecting, interpretation and engagement activities in museums, galleries
and heritage organisations.

PURPOSE
The aims of the publication are:
* To encourage and facilitate feminist practice by sharing examples of
success and positive experience in the museum and heritage sector.
* To evaluate the impact and results of feminist practices and actions in
the museum and heritage sector.

EDITOR
Dr Jenna Ashton is Impact and Engagement Manager at Manchester Metropolitan
University’s Office for Research and Knowledge Exchange, and Creative
Director of the Digital Women’s Archive North [DWAN]. Her research and
curatorial practice explores memory and narrative, material culture,
archives and feminist interventions.

SUBMISSIONS
We welcome international proposals for both (longer) chapters and (briefer)
case studies from museum, gallery and heritage professionals, academics and
researchers. Proposals from those with practical experience of assessing
and evaluating outcomes in this field are particularly welcome, as are
contributions which present the practical experience of innovative
programmes, or the results of the impact of new initiatives.
Aspects of interest include – but are not limited to – innovations and
successes in any of the following areas:

* Curatorial and collecting decisions and initiatives
* Positive innovations in the fields of management, marketing,
interpretation, exhibitions, digital, outreach and other key aspects of
museum and heritage work.
* Successful changes to institutional structures, policies or practices
* The discovery and presentation of hidden herstories
* Positive engagement with voluntary or activist women's organisations
* The impact of organisations founded or managed on a feminist ethos
* Artist interventions

[MCN-L] REMINDER Call for Participants: ER&L 2017 Panel – Local Digitization Case Studies

2016-09-28 Thread Hannah Marshall
*apologies for cross-posting

Call for Participants: ER&L 2017 Panel – Making Local Collections Global:
Local Digitization Case Studies (working title)

In response to track 6 of the 2017 ER&L Conference Call for Proposals
– “Scholarly
Communication & Library publishing: Locally Digitized Materials”
 – this session seeks
to present a series of impactful case studies showcasing locally designed
and implemented digitization workflows that serve:

   -

   the source material
   -

   the institutional context
   -

the target audience (scholarly or otherwise) for both the source
material and the resultant digital objects

Local digitization is the cornerstone of an increasingly broad digital
collections landscape. Institutional efforts to digitize local collections
and get them into broader access channels creates innumerable opportunities
for new scholarship. Efforts to promote this content into the larger
landscape are often initiated locally, relying on in-house equipment,
expertise, and infrastructure. This work is being undertaken at every price
point by institutions and teams of all scales and levels of experience.

Please respond if you’re interested in sharing your experience developing
and maintaining local digitization workflows. Relevant case studies can
range from end-to-end solutions to single points of success within larger
workflows, and can deal with any and all content types, scales,
institutional contexts, and audiences. Also of interest are
discussions of specific
tools and platforms used to describe and manage digitized material, strategies
for promotion and outreach, and examples of locally digitized content
interacting with other collection types.

ER&L 2017 CFP Track 6 Prompt: How do we deal with new models of scholarship
that are emerging? How do we accommodate new forms of content? What can we
do to facilitate knowledge sharing and access? What role can the library
play in the creation and distribution of the products of scholarship and
creativity?

Some questions to think about regarding aspects of your local digitization
practice that might be of interest to others grappling with use cases
similar to yours:

   -

Do you perform in-house digitization of local collections – in any
format – that have historically been under served or underutilized?
   -

Do you perform in-house digitization of heavily used local collections
to create digital surrogates that will reduce the demand for handling the
   source material?
   -

Has local digitization enabled you to transform the way your users
   interact with your content?
   -

Do you have analytics that capture the impact of your local digitization
   efforts?
   -

Are you digitizing material locally for purposes other than facilitating
   user-access to the content?
   -

Do the resultant digital objects of your local digitization efforts get
managed, described, delivered, and preserved alongside other content in
   your collections?
   -

How are your local digitization workflows documented for internal and/or
   external audiences?
   -

How do you define best practice locally? How did you arrive at those
   definitions?
   -

Are local digitization efforts pursued on a cost-recovery basis, built
into your operating budget, or with special funding?
   -

How do you capture rights metadata and modulate access to restricted
   content?

Hi Matt,
Have a look at both Mapbox https://www.mapbox.com/ and Carto
https://carto.com/ . Both have solutions that you can implement for this.
In all likelihood you'll also qualify for a free account.

They are both quite easy to get started with and you can stylize and design
a map to work perfectly with your content. We use both extensively in our
work for the National Park Service and their mapping and features are
really fun to work with. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.

Good luck!
Juan

[MCN-L] Service Design Consultant

2016-09-28 Thread Tatum Walker
Hello all!
We are currently looking to improve the service design onsite using digital
signage. Our current challenge is trying to make it clear we are a timed entry
site that has multiple buildings and varied program based on time of entry. We
are hoping implementing digital signage may help in this challenge and we look
to a service design consultant to help us find the best solution.

We are looking for recommendations of service design consultants who can help
in this endeavor. If any of you have recommendations please send them my way.
Thank you all!

Warm regards,
