[MCN-L] Adobe Creative Suite licensing
Hi all - I'm looking for advice on how to implement Adobe Creative Suite now that it has gone to a subscription model. We have, in the past, purchased one copy per fiscal year from Tech Soup. Tech Soup no longer offers CS, and when I contacted Adobe about a non-profit rate, it sent me to a list of resellers. The resellers seem to want to sell their add-ons, training, etc. All we need is a few licenses for Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I'm curious how others, especially with limited budgets, have handled this. Thanks! Here's a short post on what I found when I checked earlier today. http://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/digital-media/mobile-and-tablet-access-trends It that shows the mobile/tablet/desktop traffic breakdown trends for 2012 - 2015 The data tells us that... * Mobile breakdown is still different on different types of content (visitor information sessions much higher than site average) * For traffic averaged on all pages it has grown to about a quarter * On visits with a visitor information page it's now about a third of all traffic * Desktop access is now in the minority on visitor information sessions (about 48% - rest is mobile/tablet) * Tablet access appears to have peaked in 2014. In other words - responsive websites is a standard requirement (duh!), but if you have to prioritise resource start with identifying your high mobile content. There's a quick bit on how to look up this data on your own site. enjoy Andrew Lewis Digital Content Delivery Manager Digital Media Victoria and Albert Museum | South Kensington | London | SW7 2RL T: +44 (0)20 7942 2373 linkd.in/andrewlewishttp://linkd.in/andrewlewis Visit www.vam.ac.ukhttp://www.vam.ac.uk/ and www.vandashop.com http://www.vandashop.com/ Like Victoria and Albert Museum https://www.facebook.com/victoriaandalbertmuseum?ref=ts and VA Shop https://www.facebook.com/pages/VA-Shop/127791180573396 on Facebook Follow the VAhttps://twitter.com/V_and_A and VA Shop https://twitter.com/V_and_A_Shop on Twitter Digital Media on the VA blog: www.vam.ac.uk/digital http://www.vam.ac.uk/digital Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty 14 March - 2 August 2015 at VA South Kensington In partnership with Swarovski Book now on www.vam.ac.uk/savagebeautyhttp://www.vam.ac.uk/savagebeauty See the exhibition for free if you join as a VA Member www.vam.ac.uk/membershttp://www.vam.ac.uk/members Small Stories: At Home in a Doll's House Until 6 September 2015 at VA Museum of Childhood Admission free Keep in touch Sign up for VA e-newsletters www.vam.ac.uk/signup http://www.vam.ac.uk/signup/ Become a fan on Facebook.com/VictoriaandAlbertMuseum http://www.facebook.com/VictoriaandAlbertMuseum Follow us on Twitter.com/V_and_Ahttp://www.twitter.com/V_and_A This message is intended solely for the use of the individual or organisation to whom it is addressed. [MCN-L] digital file archiving
Hello - Does anyone out in the MCN community have a digital file archiving policy and/or strategy they can share? We have a ridiculous amount of data, plenty from many years ago that does not need to be available on a daily basis but should be kept for historical purposes. How have other small/medium-sized museums handled this issue? I would appreciate any thoughts or guidance on how best to manage years worth of exhibition materials and photos. Thanks! Re: [MCN-L] Website image cropping
Re: [MCN-L] Website image cropping So we also have dealt with this issue. We do one of several things depending on the work, and the people/personalities in play. 1) In gallery shots. If a work is hanging on a wall and it is the wall that is cropped to fit, not the work, this makes life a lot easier. Same for sculptures outside. 2) If we have to crop something we always include "detail" as part of the credit line. https://decordova.org/art/upcoming-exhibitions In this case the images have to be 580 x 380 and are scaled for the exhibition listing. In one case I cropped and added detail to the title, in the other I added extra white background to fit the dimensions. In both cases the full works are represented at a higher resolution on the exhibition page itself. They are also both works in the collection, not on loan. With loans we always get the permission for the crop for print materials and try to pick pieces/artists for the website that are visually intersting but also the most felexible with usage. We have the benefit of having contemporary artists, the majority of whom understand the situation and give permission. Designers want precision of layout, while curators etc. want artistic integrity honored. We walk the tightrope in between. Good luck! [MCN-L] Shopify on museum websites
Hi all - I'm hoping some of you have experience with Shopify. We are looking to move away from UberCart on our Drupal 6 website and set up Shopify instead. It will need to sell store products, event tickets (not many), memberships, and take donation transactions. Any thoughts, stories, experiences, examples welcome. Thanks!
