[MBZ] Pressure Bleeding.
Found most of the parts to make a pressure bleeder, I've got $20 into it. Trouble finding a master Cylinder cap, guess I'll try a dealer tomorrow. If I understand correctly, I will simply pressurize The reservoir with about 20 PSI, I have no gage. Than bleed furthest to the closest. I have 2 pints of #4 brake fluid coming. I'll use a can of #3 to flush the parts while cleaning. I'm also changing shocks. Car is jacked up with front wheels off. I have to put another jack/support to hold the lower A frame while removing shock as the shock acts as a stop for suspension travel. Is this correct? I've reason to think that my speedometer is pretty accurate, but I haven't 'calibrated' it against GPS yet. If the EGR valve has been disabled, a reasonable estimate is a gain of ~5hp (comparing info from '85 TDM for engine power figures in countries that didn't require EGR - they got an extra ~5hp). The sedan will be lighter than my wagon (lighter still than a US spec car which has an automatic transmission and heavier bumpers). Also, do I see an ABS pump in the engine bay? Unfortunately, the car is beginning to rust - I think I see bubble on the leading edge of the RR fender, and there is a rust stain on the front bumper. Also, the jack points look a little ragged - very hard to tell in the poor lighting conditions used to photograph the car so that it is very tough to see the lower body parts. While the self leveling suspension pump will drain a little power when pumping, that's negligable once the engine is started and running for a bit and level established - then it only needs to add what leaks. Not at all uncommon at all. In a relatively low-powered engine, a higher gear can put you too far off the power peak to overcome wind resistance and other running friction at higher speeds, so you can achieve a higher speed in a lower gear. Downhill or in a stiff tailwind, you may be able to exceed the lower gear's top speed, but not on the level. Dan What? You're saying that your car has a higher top end in 4th than it does in 5th? Looks like I might need to replace my lower rad hose. It was spilling the green stuff crazily the other day, and the various drive belts were flinging the stuff everywhere. I poked at it tonight and the upper end of it appears to be quite flared around the engine inlet and there was a small amount of coolant pooled around the lip. So as I recall, the right stuff to use is Zerex G-05 which has a yellowish tinge. So is the green stuff in my car okay? It's the typical antifreeze I've seen sold all over the place. Also, if I should decide to drain the coolant system, what's the total capacity I can expect to remove, and to replace? Tim 1982 300TD Moby

You can't beat my BMW Isetta though for proving there is always an exception. It overrevs if you try to exceed 38-40 MPH in 3rd gear. 4th (top gear) will take you to 54 mph. It matches your criteria, low power, 298 cc, 13 hp. If you've seen a rolling egg you know about wind resistance. I think the majority of the time you see the phenomena beign talked about is when overdrive is involved. The drive train is geared to run up to to 1:1 ratio and then when you engage OD it is for economy not speed. yes, or poor engineering. In the case of my VW, the oversize rear tires acted as an overdrive. Had it been left per Dr. Porshe's design, it would have run out to a better top speed. However, being broke and cheap, I left on the oversize tires and imagined i was saving money by lowering engine RPM/road speed. With a diesel it would be a dream come true. I'm a bit worried by the seller's report of it being slow on takeoff. Maybe not getting turbo boost---some kind of problem equivalent to the infamous blocked banjo bolt? From all reports I've read about these cars, BMW did a great job of optimizing the torque and power curves on these engines for plenty of low-end grunt. Seems like a good deal for a few thousand bucks, though, assuming valid paperwork. I'm very skeptical of these Euro cars that periodically pop up on Ebay that were imported after the end of the great gray-market era in 1985 or '86, when import rules were tightened up and DOT/EPA conversions became much more expensive. IMHO, anyone buying one of those should make darn sure not just that the car has a valid state title but also that it came here by above-board means, lest it be confiscated and crushed by the Feds. Euan, Catching up on digest - forgive if already covered. I don't think that the estate engine was 'de-tuned' compared to the sedan. True, the SLS pump would be a parasitic loss that the sedan wouldn't have unless it had the SLS option. I think the bigger difference is the weight and the wind resistance. I would imagine that the wind resistance for the wagon is higher? During my highspeed run, I was quite suprised at the smoke trail, and feared that my oil consumption rate was too high at that speed for me to continue more than about 10 minutes. With wife, luggage and full tank, I've been able to easily cruise at 90 mph and touch 95 occasionally, but the car is much more stable and well behaved at ~85. I would suspect that your car is not performing at full potential - should be able to reach top speed with two souls on-board, full liquid load and a small amount of luggage (i.e. ready-to-drive condition). Did you have the AC cranking? Head wind would definitely have a large affect at high speed - most of the power required is going into overcoming wind resistance. Don, Yes, 4th gear has a higher top speed than 5th, officially noted in the 1985 TDM. It's a small difference - something like 5 KPH, and due to the engines power band which puts the HP peak close to the max. RPM (4800 RPM HP peak IIRC, max. RPM 5050). [MBZ] 124 AC evaporator reliability (Calling Doktor B!)
Marshall, Have you kept any data on the reliability (or failure rate) for evaporators in '87 300TDs? I'm considering the purchase of a poor example of such a fine car, and it's been abused to the point that the egine has been replaced at least once (247,000 miles on the odometer). One of the many problems the car has, and most worrisome to me, is that the AC doesn't work. Any idea if evaporator failures were higher or lower based on region (i.e. North vs. South)? I'm thinking that this car's AC died while it was in the North, not really hot enough to need it, so it's been INOP for years. I'm thinking that means a lower probability that the EVAP is bad? I've heard it said that evaps don't get changed much in Colorado. In the Southeast they go out at an alarmingly high rate. But we have very humid weather and the A/C is used a lot. At Houston Hobby airport a few months after 9/11, I was at the head of the line for a short flt to Dallas, Southwest Airlines (cattle line). The gate attendant announces, Anyone who would like to volunteer for a random security check will get on the plane first. Aside from the fact that if you had to go through that process you would be about #30 on the plane, I stupidly could not resist asking him, , How can it be random if you volunteer? He said, Well, then you just volunteered and the woman behind me (#2 in line) got /seriously /upset that she couldn't volunteer to be randomly searched to be first in line. I got to do the stupid human tricks, was about #30 on the plane. I learned from that experience never to question empirical reality. Then I see this in today's paper: *Houston Chronicle, by Mike Glenn* Original Article http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3267228 ** A Houston-based rapper said his decision to call himself the Arabic Assassin was meant to stir up a bit of controversy in the music business. The stage persona -- along with some incendiary lyrics in one of his songs -- also helped get Bassam Khalaf fired this month from his job as a baggage screener at Bush Intercontinental Airport. I don't think any other 240D will. It is not an option you can have it installed at the factory. It's a proprietary feature - one that will take many factors and many trials to reproduce the exact result! RPM 5050). The 123 wagon has lower drag/wind resistance than the sedan, but weighs 120 kg (264 lb) more. The two vehicles had exactly the same rated top speed (but the wagon's 0-62 mph acceleration time was more than a second slower).
