From what I've heard, that works 99% of the time. The other 1% is a

of problems with iMacs locking up and refusing to eject them. Apple
refused to cover disassembling the computer and removing the CD under

Well some macs didn't have paper-clip holes, mind the manual usually
indicated if you could stick a paper-clip
in the CD slot edge somewhere instead. People forget Apple hasn't
made custom drives for 10's of years now,
so they use the off the self millions per order of CD drives everyone
else does.

Just because you can't mount the CD and see it in the finder doesn't
mean you can eject it.
Most current mac operating systems would have an eject button on the
keyboard or F15 or something to do
a keyboard eject, even under os-x there is a cmd line command to
force an eject
with the last resort of a keyboard command to eject via the firmware
at boot time.

I don't think a tranny tuned for the five cylinder will work
nicely with the 240D motor, although it might be possible to
adjust it to work.
The TD suspension will not work with a non TD engine, only
the TD engines will have the facility to drive the hydraulic
pump for the suspension. I believe somebody on this list
got a euro 240D with towing package and wagon style suspension
last year, but I don't think he'll be in a hurry to part it out.

Re: [MBZ] '69 220D on eBay

Phillip,

Its a 400watt blockheater, my 400watt inverter handles it with no worries. I
use a 110ah marine battery and 20 minutes is plenty to start my car down to
-15F out in the driveway. Cars don't suffer from windchill anyway.

At -20F an hour on the heater gets everything going just fine. I usually take
the battery down and get everything connected up. Come back up and jump in a
nice hot shower, eat breakfast and check my email. Then go down and start the
car, leave it running while I bring the battery back upstairs and put it on the
charger. If its -20F I'll maybe have another cup of coffee, I know its naughty
but at -20F I like to have some heat... Contrary to what I've read on this list
my car will develop enopugh heat to warm the cab at idle in 5-7 minutes. I have
a 40 mile one way commute so I'm not terribly worried about any carbon
developing in that time.

a 110ah
marine battery and 400watt inverter that I haul down to the car and
20
minutes later it starts with no problems all the way down to -20F
which is
about as cold as it ever gets here.

After messing with series plugs last night, I think I like messing
with
them better than the parallel ones. SO SIMPLE.

The relay circuit is simpler - but it in not that series is inherently
simpler than parallel.

The two problems I see with the series system Mercedes used:

  * About 1/2 of the heat created is in the toaster wires - outside
of the engine!!

  * Any problem with any connection or heater will affect _all_ the
plugs,
not just the one with troubles.

You know, with some creativity, you could use an RV charging system
(allows
charge but not discharge), and run dual batteries, leaving one for an
onboard
inverter for your block heater. The battery will charge up as you
drive, as
long as you don't do short trips with a 4000 watt ghetto blaster like
Spud
has hooked up in his 300D :)

Hmmm.

That would take a _lot_ of battery.

The block heater is about 750 watts. With an inverter that is 100%
efficient (impossible) that is about 55 amps at 13.6 V !!!

My experience is the block heater is almost useless if it is powered
for
less than 1 hour. By 2 hours, it's help is noticable; and 3-4 hours is
long enough for my garage-parked (no wind) cars for any temperatures I
find here in central Missouri.

So, to get 3 hours of full power you should prabably figure on at least
200 amp-hour batter capacity.

Philip, dreaming of some day finding diesel-fire block
heaters - that cost _less_ than the car.

My recently deceased '82 240D ran fine on B99, but

part of that was probably my average speed over

to me by more than one party (incl. here on this list,
I believe) that this _might_ be alleviated by
advancing the timing a little; this didn't need to be
done, it was claimed, on the TDI 'cause the electronic
timing control was automatically doing it dynamically.

crisp motor and tranny. It seems to be geared low,
not sure, but it definitely feels nimble and
responsive.

On the other hand, the 77 240D (W123, manual) was
abysmally slow when I got it last year. It is
steadily improving with M1 and hard driving but has a
long way to go to catch up with the W115. I think it
is heavier than the W123, at least it feels that way.
I drove another W123 240D the other day and it was a

slug, although the owner crowed about its strong
motor. But I know of at least one 240D that isn't
slow.

From what I understand, stents have defined, finite lives, and if you get

Kaleb posted a '69 220D from eBay the other day, its in my area so I

asked

the guy for more pictures. The one picture on eBay looks really nice

so

I'm thinking this might be a good car to own, assuming the blower

motor

works and I don't mind having somebody else change the oil (twist my

arm).

Anything else I should know about those cars? Old style glowplugs so

I'll

want to convert. How well can one with converted glowplugs be

expected to

start in the cold? Right now at about 0F I start getting nervous ('83
240D) and at -5F I've gotta put the block heater on which is a

project

because I live in a 3rd floor walkup with nowhere to plugin the car.

I've

got a 110ah marine battery and 400watt inverter that I haul down to

the

car and 20 minutes later it starts with no problems all the way down
to -20F which is about as cold as it ever gets here.

You CAN access every bit of the linkage with the manifold in situ, but
patience is required. I've fiddled with these items far more times
than I care to recall. I used epoxy to fix the plastic ball joints on
the sliding linkage between the IP and CC servo bracket.

teacher) FREEKIN' STOPPED in front of the school, right blinker on. He then
proceeded to wave FOUR school busses out. Bear in mind that this is a four
lane road, so the busses could only move when there was no traffic coming
from the north or from the inside lane headed north.

After bus one, I hit the ruptured duck horn on my 240D and screamed out the
window, 'Move your damn ass. ... No response. I hit my horn again. No
response.

If only I'd had a 9 mm (this coming from an anti-gun liberal!)

Anyway, after four busses and a good four minutes, the guy turned right,
clearing the lane. I floored my 240D (yea, I know, laugh) and extended left
hand, middle finger, out of the window.

At that point, my daughter's junior high (she is now a high school senior)
band teacher made contact with me. I ... well, sort of ... waved back.

I will have to give Matt a phone call tomorrow to explain.

Oh, I got the paperwork there with about 3 minutes to spare ... after
following a Parker Wagon down the highway (only farm country folks will
understand what a Parker Wagon is).

That recall will still be in effect unless the part has already been
replaced. A call to Mercedes with your VIN number will answer that. The
part that's replaced is a plastic throttle bushing. The original
bushings fail from age and heat and I recommend that one be carried in
the glovebox of ALL 201 and 124 diesels. I had one fail only a few
months ago (hadn't had one fail in 4-5 years). I believe that every one
of the bushing on all of my cars HAVE now been replaced and only one of
the replacement bushing has failed again (the replacement bushings are
plastic vs the rubberized original part that gets soft when heated).

For some unknown reason, the exact same part with the same
characteristics in a similar environment used on 201s were NOT recalled
- but they failed in exactly the same way.

better mileage then the other 124's. In fact, the best performing
Mercedes Diesels (in terms of mileage) have the 2.5. I am talking about
the 190D 2.5. Those cars are widely reported to get 40-45 with a manual.

where I was really pushing it lost of turnpike time at 80-85. I averaged
over 1000 miles 33mpg. The 1990's 124 with the 2.5 get significantly
better mileage then the other 124's. In fact, the best performing
Mercedes Diesels (in terms of mileage) have the 2.5. I am talking about
the 190D 2.5. Those cars are widely reported to get 40-45 with a manual.

Peter,

I think fresh beer would be in order, though we'd need to do the party
somewhere other than Dunn's since adult beverages are not allowed.

I'd say your campground is a great idea, unfortunately Memorial day is tree
planting week for me. Say that gives me an idea. I've got 85 acres in northern
Maine we're converting into a tree farm. Usually we take the week before
Memorial day and my wife and my folks and I plant around 1,000 trees. If we had
a Benz get together all sorts of people could get the chance to plant trees too!

Curt,
Do I have to save the Sam Adams for the next one? Maybe I'll buy
fresh.

I was saved from a fate worse than death, SHMBO wanted me to escort
her to an Eastern Star function. That requires Tux and no booze
just when you need it most.

Nice Park! I'd be happy to assist in catering, we do a lot of that
for our Masonic friends.

We simply need a date and commitment from 10 or more folks to show up.

Thought:
I own a small piece of a campground in Brenardston, MA. That near
Greenfield. On Memorial day there is a very large tractor/one lung
engine/flea market about ? mile outside town. Here is also a
reasonable motel very close.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 420SEL for sale

2005-09-28 Thread Dave Wakin

I have had two of these, both 87's and in great shape.

One was black on black with 114K I bought for 4k about 4 years ago. Drove it
for a year and the neighbor down the street offered me 6K for it, so I sold
it.

Other was smoke silver with maroon interior, very nice as well with 158K on
it. I bought it for $1500 as a winter car a few years ago, sold it for $3100
to the first guy who looked at it when I bought my e320 last year.

I have seen quite a few on Craig's list in NY for 2K range, but their
mileage is higher. Not sure where you are, but rust is an issue here and can
affect the price quite a bit.

With more miles, you are probably looking at valve seals at some point.
Personally, I always wanted the 560, mostly for the heated seat feature
usually not found on the 420.

My Benz is plenty rusty, to the point where I expect the body to give

Re: [MBZ] got my 87 300TD!

2005-09-28 Thread Kevin J. Slater
I had almost the same symtoms. I have records from the previous owner but
it doesn't show when the trap was replaced. I had a bad temp sensor in car
(plus other issues) and managed to overheat the engine on the way home one
time. That was enough to start the process of coolant loss. I was only
using the 300TD to go back and forth to the bus stop so I lived with it
for a while, but the clouds of white smoke in the cool mornings were
really getting outrageous and so I went out and found a #17 head. I think
I paid $850 + shipping from TN to PA. And that was my cheapest find and it
took a while to locate. I'd pay attention to what Dave's saying. He may be
overly cautious on this one, but you don't want to have to find a head,
take it from me.

...Kevin

Dave M. said:
My 617 also likes to keep some pressure in the system when cold, but
it's not the 15-20psi that I observed with the 603 cracked heads. I
wouldn't worry about it on a 61x engine, or even 601/602, unless there
are other symptoms. On a 603 however I'd be monitoring the situation
 very closely.

Some of you may remember Justin Dobbs from a previous MB email list,
who had the perssure syndrome and ignored it, as most people do. About
a year later it started using coolant and then hydrolocked. I think he
ended up getting a used engine to swap in, something about damage to
the block surface (I forget though.) I think I heard of nearly a dozen
failed heads in the past 18 months or so, from the email list and
 various MB web forums.

FWIW, a brand new head is about $1600 (wholesale) from Rusty... less
than half that for a good used #17 head.

I have to admit I would certainly love to get my hands on a Honda S2000 as a
replacemnt for my Mustang Cobra that I sadly had to sell. The sound of a
screaming engine at 8,000 rpms just boils my blood. Its too bad that a lot of
the Honda, Toyotas and even the others like Kia are starting to look a lot like
each other. Yep, I would say bland is the word here except for Nissan who has
taken a real sporting image over the last few years. I still like the 280Z's of
the 70's and the last few that were made in the 90's.

To be fair, I think that needs to be seen through the lens of the original
pricing on Hondas.

I am lukewarm on most Toyotas, but I have a great amount of respect for
Honda products. They don't match my criteria for a complete quality
automobile, but IMHO they deliver a great amount of bang for the buck and
their styling manages to be contemporary without being stupid or overdone.
Nissan has really turned itself around over the last five years or so as
well.

My 1983 300TD with 276 K miles has suffered diminishing fuel economy over

I would NOT suggest buying a car that has had the injection pump

Tom,

Nitske's page on the 450SEL cover 72-80 model years so his fuel consumption
figure of 16 MPG is pretty general. Given that the 72-78 had a 3.07 rear
gear, the 79 had 3.06(?), and the 80 had 2.65:1. Your 77 would have a
performance gear and I would suspect 16 would be hard to average pulling around
 4100
pounds.

The fuel is specified as US: no lead fuel with no mention of octane, which
implies low octane is OK. The 6.9 page, for example, calls for super in the
fuel category. US horsepower for the 77 is quoted at an anemic 180 (@4750
rpm) with a compression ration of 8.0:1, which should be very happy on the
cheapest blends. Fuel tank capacity was 25.4 gallons.

Some other specs: 0-60 in 10.8 seconds with a top speed of 127 MPH. the 77
sold new for $24,506 (east cost POE). Of the 59,575 sold in the USA, 10,042
were labeled 77s.

If you buy the car, I would be glad to scan the two pages for your files.

Does anything have to be fabricated or purchased, or is the

You probably won't be able to fit a 602 engine into the 201.034 chassis
(it MIGHT fit into a 190E 2.6 - MAYBE) without MAJOR alterations to the
chassis. The 190D 2.5 chassis were stretched up front - different
radiators and so forth - from the earlier cars to fit in the longer
engine. I'm NOT saying it can't be done, but look VERY carefully and see
how things fit into one versus the other. Pay particular attention to
the radiator, AC condenser, fans, fan shroud and AC stuff.

I had a 1979 450SEL from 1991 through 1998.

It was a great car and used regular unleaded fuel. Fuel mileage was the
main reason I sold the car. My mpg were usually south of 16mpg. The best
I'd ever seen was on the highway driving was 17 or 18 mpg.

A huge car and very stout of performance. My 116 was my first Mercedes, and
I've owned nothing but Mercedes since then.

Re: [MBZ] IP rebuilding (was: no subject)

2005-09-28 Thread Dave M.
Say what? I'm with Kleb, as they age, the IP's are almost always low
on fuel delivery, especially off idle - necessitating the ALDA
adjustment (richer). Almost all older, unmolested MB turbo diesels are
dogs (low fuel delivery) that wake up dramatically with a little
tweaking. I never hear of old diesels being too darn fast and blowing
black smoke while frying the tyres, Finnish-style...

Most of those older Benz's do not require any type of high octane fuel. Higher
octane gas which is mostly required in LEV's or Low Emission Vehicles. Higher
octane say 91 or higher does not burn faster than say 87 or 89 it burns slower
which results in a cleaner burn. Almost all of the pre 90's Benz's run fine on
low octane and don't require anything more than 89 or less

Well if you can get an S500 or 500SEL for 5K, then accept the fact
*you could* spend $10K to $15K to fix everything that is broken, then
I assure you
it's a very nice ride. A S600 will add another 10K (easy) to that

Of course there is always a lurking W140 diesel (maybe if very lucky

[MBZ] Aux Fan Pooped Out

2005-09-28 Thread Bob Rentfro
It appears my aux fan has pooped out. The manual says, check the supplementary
fan for function, for this purpose pull the two flat plugs from the temperature
switches ( 14 or 15) and connect to each other (connecting short).

I reckon I should see if it will spin at all by doing this but I have no idea
what switch they are speaking of. What historically fails on these? This is the
first time ever I have had one fail.

Is there a relay for this and, if there is, where is it?

Bosal markets an exhaust system that's warranted for as long as you own
your car - not stainless, but excellent quality - and they WILL replaced
parts that fail (or at least have for me). They cost considerably less
than Timevalve.

On a diesel the average exhaust life (excluding collision damage) is
going to be may 10+ years even in Pittsburgh (where cars often rust away

_snip___

Sounds like an idea from New York/New Jersey. If a 2-lane road has
one lane blocked, it becomes a 1-lane road. How does feeding 3 or 4
lanes into it speed things up? Is there some magic here?

THE SHOULDERS ARE THE ONLY WAY THE EMERGANCY VEHICLES HAVE TO GET TO
THE SCENE! Plug them up and you guarantee a bad situation will get
worse in a hurry.

Hope it's not me that needs the help.

Than there is the issue of road rage; If I'm waiting patiently in line
{be it grammar school lunch or a traffic jam.} What gives anyone the
right to cut-in being rude to all who are doing the right thing?

There are several State Troopers in this state {Connecticut} that will
divert such cars to the side of the road, wait until the road hazard
is clear and than go over and explain the laws to the folks that are
in a bigger hurry than I am.
I always give them a thumbs-up sign as I go past.

Pardon the rant here. Stupid driving bothers me. Don't get me
started on idiots that drive with 4-ways on in a situation they
believe is dangerous.

Are the hoods, grills, fenders, etc the same? You've got a four banger

the proposed project cars are available to me for comparison.

The fenders, hood, grill are all the same, but the rear of the radiator
in the 2.5 diesels are maybe 2 closer to the front of the car (allowing
a longer engine to be inserted) and that changes the body work that
connects the left and the right fenders and supports the radiator. Not
something that can easily be changed!

Just measured my '85 190D and the '87 2.5t and the engine compartment of
the 2.5t is 2 longer. This was done by moving the radiator forward
(it's thinner too) and redesigning all the metal work between the
fenders so the engine compartment extends 2 further forward. This would
NOT be easy to replicate.

I have NOT examined the 201.034 to see if a diesel could fit.

You could try calling Rick Ellinger at http://rc-imports.com/

He knows the 201.034 chassis VERY intimately!!

Well that assumes that you can find an owner idiot that will sell you
a fixed perfect w140 for the same price as a broken w140. Since most
of that money is going to fix faulty engineering it's hard for a
smart owner to prevent it from becoming toast even if you do all the
preventative maintenance. Blower regulators that melt, vacuum/
pressure pumps (two) which kick the bucket, an A/C system which
requires you to replace the evaporator, and window regulators that
break because the windows are heavy, let alone engine wiring
harnesses that decompose because of the heat and the desire for easy
recycling, helpfully frying your MAF.

agree in Chicago, you cannot keep most cars from rusting. I had an uncle

2005-09-28 Thread andrew strasfogel
I wish you well, but...

Beware the oogy cracked dash. :(( I never saw a 116 450SE/L that still had
an intact dash, especially if it was blue. Also, inasmuch as most of them
seem to have been owned by chain smokers, the interiors usually smell of
stale tobacco fumes. Yecchhh.

I'll tell you after I trade for it, on Saturday.

The car has 155,000 miles on it and the seats are in excellent condition.
The body's straight and I can't find a sign of rust anywhere. The paint's
faded enough that I believe it to be original.

Re: [MBZ] Exhaust system company link

2005-09-28 Thread andrew strasfogel
I second Chuck re: Timevalve. They have a lifetime warranty that they really
DO honor. It's so good it's worth SHOUTING about!

Bosal markets an exhaust system that's warranted for as long as you own
your car - not stainless, but excellent quality - and they WILL replaced
parts that fail (or at least have for me). They cost considerably less
 than Timevalve.

On a diesel the average exhaust life (excluding collision damage) is
going to be may 10+ years even in Pittsburgh (where cars often rust away
 in 5-8 years).

Re: [MBZ] O/T Road Rules

2005-09-28 Thread andrew strasfogel
HAH! There's nothing that makes me madder than idiots who cruise in the
breakdown lane when the beltway traffic has come to a halt.

 Said in part:

 9. In instances where traffic slows to 10mph, all shoulders shall
 become lanes.
