[MBZ] Anyone know of a good seat repair site?
I have the drivers seat out of an SDL and have bogged down. My problem was that a new fuse would allow it to operate for a week or so, then blow another fuse. It was during the fore and aft movement. I keep taking more and more screws, nuts and bolts off, trying to get to a point where I can see how things work and be able to inspect for wear or damage. I hope someone has a procedure, or steps to follow. Anyone? Thanks Harry Watkins Newton, MS 86 SDL Silver 85 300D Euro 86 SDL Gold 81 240D manual trans
Re: [MBZ] Anyone know of a good seat repair site?
Well you are going to have to remove the seat completely. First move seat all the way back and remove front 2 bolts, then move all the way forward for the back 2. Then you can get to the motors etc and see if one of the wires is damaged or something. Harry Watkins wrote: I have the drivers seat out of an SDL and have bogged down. Re: [MBZ] Anyone know of a good seat repair site?
I usually just get it sort of stuck in the car door a little just so the cord will reach to move it back and forth. OR, you can just stick the proper drill bit in the special port on the motor just for the purpose of manually moving it back at forth. As for the pins, the older style with no memory is different than the later memory seats. That is why the pins are different. Loren Faeth wrote: Yes, but if you read, Harry already HAD his seat out. those instructions get the seat out but then you are stuck! I just had my SDL seat out for the second time and it is as bad as or worse than the heater fans they stick on a stand and then build the car around. The problem is, once you get the seat out of the car, you can't unbolt the seat from the slides or the slides from the power mechanism. I thought I was real smart and had the bottom off of a 126 SE on hand before I took the seat out. WRONG the SE seat had large pins and the SDL seat had small pins. NO swapping parts, even if you COULD get all the bolts out. You cant get the seat into a workable position with the plugs in for power, and you can't move the cussed slides without power to the right pins. What we need is a test/repair bench for sears with plugs and switches from a junker to move the seat around once it is out of the car. The only solution I have had is to pull the seat, take out some bolts, put it back in move it fore/aft and take the seat out and remove some more bolts until you get them all. This means you have to put in and take out the cussed seat 2- 3 times for disassembly and the same for assembly. I did manage to get my slides straightened and working again, but it is a ROYAL pain, and with heated or the vacuum operated ortho cushions, it gets even worse. [MBZ] seat heater repair
My '93 has one good seat heater (the passenger side of course) and one bad. Symptoms are that the lights on the switch will flash very briefly when the switch is pressed, and then remain off. Switch and relays have been checked and are considered good (by my mechanic). So it sounds like the problem is probably in the seat itself. First, is this a reasonable conclusion? Second, what could be wrong (bad heating element in the seat?), and what's the process of repairing? Thanks! Lee '93 300D 2.5 180K
Re: [MBZ] seat heater repair
I would find the electrical connection to the seat and measure the resistance. This will give a clue if the heating element is bad. The enxt thing could be a bad wire/connection. Again, measure the resistance of the wire loop. On 12/26/05, Lee Levitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My '93 has one good seat heater (the passenger side of course) and one bad. Re: [MBZ] seat heater repair
So it sounds like the problem is probably in the seat itself. First, is this a reasonable conclusion? Yes, given the harsh environment the seat heater lives in. Second, what could be wrong (bad heating element in the seat?), and what's the process of repairing? Remove seat, remove cover(s), replace heating pad(s), reassemble. It's very much worth unplugging the heating elements (there are two: back and butt) under the seat and measuring their resistance first. The two-stage heater puts them in series on low, and in parallel on high. Does the system not work on both settings? I'm not sure how intelligent the relay is about reacting to electrical problems in the heating elements, but it could be that one fault will take both elements out of service. If they both measure good you may have a bad relay. Those are clipped to the floorboards under the seats in a 126, I'm not sure about anything else. -- Jim

Check your charging system, that is what they do when the charging system is not charging like its supposed to. They do that to tell you something is wrong. My 560 was doing that then a few days later I figured out the alternator was not charging. Lee Levitt wrote: My '93 has one good seat heater (the passenger side of course) and one bad. Thanks! Well too bad you didnt see this then: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=8024585038rd=1sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AITrd=1 My SDL was blowing fuses everytime you tried to move the backrest. At 09:12 PM 12/25/2005, you wrote: Well you are going to have to remove the seat completely. First move seat all the way back and remove front 2 bolts, then move all the way forward for the back 2. [MBZ] Car 'year'
Also, from your list of MBz you own, can you give me some evidences to differentiate a '75 vs a '76 240D. I have one titled as a '76, although for some reasons, I believe it to be a '75. Thanks. Frankenheap is in the same boat. The State thinks it is a '71, but I have good reason to believe that '72 is more appropriate, given that I found lots of '72 date codes on electrical items in it. I don't think that I'd want to try to convince the State that they had the wrong number! What's in it for them to change, anyway? DBAG is not like some other manufacturers that have discontinuities in their design and production for each year, saving up most engineering changes for the next model. DBAG just made continuous improvements as they thought of them, phasing them in at any old time. The model year designation (a US invention) is just another thing they stamp on arbitrarily to suit their production method. After all, even for a Chevy the 'year' is just a 'designed for sale as the year of' number, and is something like six months out of phase with the calendar now. DBAG's VIN will tell you everything you need to order parts appropriate for the car and probably the date of final assembly too, if you care about that. How that relates to the US's approximately August-to-August 'car year' is up to you. Your State obviously took an assembled in '75 car and called it a '76. My '97 pickup was originally sold in '96, sounds like the same thing. -- Jim

Thanks Jim, In the 124 the relays are under the rear seat. With regard to the seat heating elements -- are they separate from the seat covers? How difficult is it to remove the seat cover? Thanks! -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] 93 S-Class diesel (new engine?)
Yes. The last revision of the OM603 head, casting #22, has a modified oil passage. The previous castings were mostly open to the head gasket, and sometimes the gasket would blow out into the timing chain cavity and #1 cylinder. The new casting moves the passage internal to the head with a hole at either end. In retrospect, I don't understand why it wasn't designed like that in the first place. A photo of the heads side by side, showing the oil passage difference, is here: http://www.w124performance.com/images/OM603_head_replacement/heads-front.jpg :) -Dave M. [MBZ] Strange Lack of What Little Power There Was
Oldest girl-child called me the other day and told me she didn't think she could get all of her stuff in the Beetle to get it home, so I put the roof rack on and drove over to Long Beach. I loaded the car (back seat full, trunk full, TV on front seat and three big suitcases up on the rack) and, after fueling up with $3.509 Chevron fuel (this is where I get fuel all the time for the Bug), we took off for home. The car wasn't overloaded, I'd say. However I had to keep it FLOORED most of the time on the way back to even keep it at 70mph. And going up the big hill going east on I-10 east of Indio...it was 40 mph in second gear sometimes. Fuel useage went to a crazy 12 mpg. So...I had to work Christmas day (made lots of electricty so all y'all could sit around in comfort with your families) and the loss of oomph was still evident. Usually I can set the cruise for 76 and drivew the 40 miles with it not wavering. Yesterday, it seemed it took a lot more accelerator mashage to get to the 75, then it was very hard to maintain it...and the fuel milage is still horrible. And, it also seems like my oil usage made a step change (from 1 qt/1500 miles to 1 qt/900 miles) Is the fix as easy as changing fuel filters? the system of selling the car titled according to the date of sale rather than otherwise, regardless of how long it had been in his inventory. This seems strange to me that he could have legally done this but In one way this even makes the most sense given the primary purpose of the 'year' so far as the State is concerned: assessing value for the purposes of taxation. It minimizes the age and thus maximizes the taxes. So no, I'm not surprised that it is legal! Follow the money. -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] Anyone know of a good seat repair site?
That worked, I now have the screw lined up to come out and got called to lunch (I never miss lunch). To make a tool I hammered the end of a welding rod (1109) square, finished with a file and used a drill motor to move the rail. The square (without measuring) seems to be about the size of a speedometer cable end but I don't have an old one to try. I am going to shape my welding rod into a crank and not use the drill motor. It also turns out that two of the three motors have the square hole exposed, but the fore/aft motor does not so I inserted my tool into the driven gear square to make the move. I plan to drill a hole in the motor frame to cure that problem. Until I reassemble, I don't know if you can crank the motors with the motor frame fastened to the side rails or not, I have them loose right now so I can move it all around. I'll post my findings. For those of you who wish to add to your collection of photographs, I have two illustrating the air compressor with clutch removed and the new clutch with parts. Just make an additional note, there are two spacer washers that go into the very back of the clutch piece. They are very easy to overlook and easier to loose. Go to www.scaffolding.com/mb Regarding the tandem pump. The very front has treads on it for what appears to shaft removal. Does anyone know what size and kind they are? Constantine
Re: [MBZ] 1987 300DT
Yes - it's a 124 chassis car. The chassis number is WDB1241331A285947. The engine should be 60396012001977 and the tranny 72231702817510. The color code is 355, and the interior is 272. The order number is 0670452241 (I don't know what if anything you can do with this). This is the only year of the 124 chassis with the 3.0 liter six diesel engine - prized for the Diesel performance. It's the engine that had the cracking head problem, but I believe marshal said that the number of heads cracking now is decreasing significantly. I far prefer driving the 124 chassis to the 123, and it's reputed to be less likely to rust than most other models. I opted to look for the 90-93 2.5 turbo model 124 instead of going for the max performance of the 1987 3.0 version due to the reputed greater fuel economy and I like to cool air intake slits in the right front fender.
