within 5 sec or so. Is it possible for the GP light to go on when the
system isn't working? It has the newer style parallel plugs in it.

Not in theory, but if _all_ the plugs are dead maybe. You need
to get out the meter and start doing some basic checks. The GP
relays themselves can fail, too. How's its fuse?

I brought my Dad's 96 pickup home last fall, it had 11k miles on it when
I left his place. He bought, drove it a year or so, had a stroke, and
then it sat in the garage pretty much since then, though he get fluid
changes and such every now and then. And new batteries. It is
basically a brand-new 10 yr old truck, still smells like new. Only
issue is the A/C loses charge every few months, I guess some of the
seals got dried out while it sat.

I see cars like this advertised in estate sales occasionally, was an 86
Olds of some sort at a car auction a couple years back that had a few
thousand miles on it, belonged to an old lady whose hubby died back then
so the car sat in the garage, though she did keep it clean and
serviced. Looked brand new. Went for less than $2k as it was not a
particularly desirable car, would have been great for a kid or a second
ride.

Kevin,

Sounds to me like a typical 'optimistic' glow plug timer circuit. Wait
another count of ten after the light goes out, and then try cranking.
Yes, it is possible for the light to go one when there are problems.
The self diagnostic circuit compares current to plug #1 to the rest, and
sometimes if only one plug is out it won't be detected.

What other symptoms?

The new ones wrenched to specified torque with lots of thread still showing.
The back 3 plugs came out with ease. And the new ones threaded all the way

Seems like I've read about the injector ports filling with carbon and

correct way to fix this problem?

DO NOT run the engine without cleaning (reaming) out the carbon and
insuring that the replacement plugs go in easily and fully seat (just
achieving proper torque is NOT sufficient) Failure to clean out
carbon and not insuring that the plugs fully seat is what causes MOST of
the glow plug problems that cost $3000+ to repair!!

You can't just run a drill bit in. That can easily damage the
prechamber/ballpin.

Not usually. 5 seconds seems long for a system on the fritz. Usually the
light is the first sign. Why don't you think they work? Did you test them
for resistance? Are they under 1 ohm? (the max you would want, about .6

2006-05-13 Thread V Layton

Thanks for your comments.

The issues are a little seperate, however.

The fact only a maybe a dozen or so come to these events as they are
restricted to the one model, is indeed currently quaint charm. That's fine.
If it grows into the national W123 attraction of my dreams, it'll be fun
to watch it gain acceptance over the coming decades.

I really don't mean to come off complaining about the return rate, but
understand those are of only W123 owners who specifically requested the
memebership info. Based on the positive correspondance, I thought it might
be closer to 25%. Consideration is of course given that it is a
free-per-simple-request promotion giveaway and not everyone will respond
further. The feed back recieved has been very positive, if limited.
Perhaps the literature is not extensive enough or too intense for folks
based on their taste, I usually don't hear that, perhaps out of courtesy
which I can respect, but a little criticism is good. Often I have it worked
out and can explain why I do something a certain way. Regardless I will
continue to build and enhance the membership however I am able to make it
more attractive. One should WANT to join a club, or better yet, "not miss
out on it"It's a recreational back burner issue I understand. Some join
years later, it'll be fine.

The point of my Club is supreme enhancement of the model for the benefit of
the owner. There is no way I would want to compete against the other
solidly founded MB club instituions. I participate in some of those too.
My tiny sect is merely a special haven for my obsession. The extreme focus
gives me pleasure and I believe will allow me to encompass the car
completely. With all the details I want to know about one type of car,
learning much about other cars cannot be afforded.

Are you the Les in Boston? Take a weekend vacation to Atlantic City or
something, put in a can of injector cleaner (seafoam is my favorite additive
right now) each way and run the daylights out of it. Good tuneup with high
quality wires etc.
If they're doing the roller test make sure your tires are the right size. I
had odd sized tires (too small actually) on my Dakota one year and the guy had
a heck of a time, it apparently "just barely passed". The next test (once every
2 years in MA) it had bigger tires and passed fine.
Ahh the life of the diesel. Entertainingly theres no diesel emissions test
here for cars but I have to take it to a place that COULD do a test for a
diesel. Diesel trucks apparently have to be "snap" tested. I'm told that
entails flooring it and letting off the pedal, if it belches a horrible cloud
of black smoke it fails. In the words of the tester "if I can still read the
Dodge (or Chevy or Ford or whatever) on the back of the truck they pass... Wow.

Spring driving event is coming up Sunday May 21st. I'm sorry for the short
notice, but thought some of you might like to know. Spring has sprung here
and I'm pretty much booked for repairs until the last week in May. I spend
my "evening recreation" updating the website and corresponding. Club
membership registries are up to 59 nationwide, which is pretty good I think.
The last membership promotion I mentioned was rather anti-climatic, about
5% return. I did get some requests from members of this list though, so
thank you very much all who asked for info.

BACK TO THE EVENT

It's a rather mellow, 120 mile non-racing event that isn't any real special
challenge, just a formal excuse to drive your W123 with other W123 folks.
There are competative scoring factors. It is all within a 100-mile radius
of St. Louis and only about 10 hours long, from the provided continental
breakfast to the paticipant-funded dinner (under $20-$25 per entree) So
far 10 are registered, ALL w123s of course. The 3rd time for this young
autoclub tradition, I'm pleased it continues and grows. You do not have to
be Club 123D member to participate. (But you might as well be) If Sunday is
a problem, next year it will be Saturday. (I have been tring to alternate
them)

See the Events at www.club123d.org for information and photos of the past
two events as well as plenty of information on the details of this year's
event.

So W123 owners, there is a formally coordinated W123 drving activity in St.
Louis (or two) and you are invited!

You can also e-mail me personally if you have any questions.

Thank you very much for reading

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Secret Energy

2006-05-13 Thread Peter Frederick
Running waste veggie oil without extensive cleanup will result in
horrible "resinification" (varnish) all over everything. You must
remove the protein, and preferably the phospholipids before use.

Also, veggie oil, untreated, is too viscous cold to get sucked up into
the IP, so the engine will stop. Likely the filters will plug almost
instantly, too, unless the oil is pre-treated.

Biodiesel is fine -- but it won't be $.46 a gallon, either.

Re: [MBZ] wow '85 SD

2006-05-13 Thread Zoltan Finks

It looks like this guy restores vehicles. There is a section of his ebay
page that shows several other vehicles for sale. All of them that I looked
at are also immaculate. And the old Caddie is admittedly restored (and he's
asking some $50k).

I would say that even if the SD in question truly did have such low miles,
it has been - if not restored - at least detailed extensively. The condition
of the various parts indicate that they have been either meticulously
maintained, or replaced/refurbished.

If it has not been restored, Lynn's question is begged: Where did he get it.
I'll add: How? Why would someone maintain a vehicle such, then let it go?
Death?

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Secret Energy

2006-05-13 Thread Luther Gulseth
Here is DSE as explained by Graydon Blair of Utay Biodiesel Supply
www.utahbiodieselsupply.com This is copied directly from the Yahoo
BiodieselBasics files. I doubt you can find a better explination anywhere
online of DSE.

Diesel Secret--a broader explanation
- By Graydon Blair, utah Biodiesel Supply

If "inquiring minds" would really like to know, girl mark put together an
EXCELLENT thread on this, which I link to in my thread.

Here's a few links for the inquiring minds...
Link To My Threads On Diesel Secret http://tinyurl.com/9nkp9
- I linked to several threads all about Diesel Secret (a.k.a. DSE)
- Hit the first one & read...it's a great thread by girl mark

If you're after more, keep reading the other threads I have linked.

And now for some "first hand experience" on it
I had a customer stop by one day that was interested in biodiesel that had
purchased and was using DSE in his truck. He told me the process he went
through to use the stuff (it was mind-boggling). Filter, filter, filter,
add kerosene, add gasoline, filter some more, add the "secret wonder
juice", stir, stir, stir, add to fuel tank & drive away.

He reported that after using it his truck was a lot louder on initial
startup than before-- He was running an '03 Ford Powerstroke (just
guessing here, but I'm betting the gasoline in the mixture ain't too good
on fuel injectors and the fuel injection pump-- reduce the lubrication
over time and it's GONNA get louder).

He also reported having plugged filters and gelling problems.
He was very interested in biodiesel and after walking him through what it'd
take to make it, he seemed to think making biodiesel would be a better use
of resources than using the DSE method.

He also left me with a sample of his "DSE based fuel" that I still have
hangin' out in the garageit smells something NASTY!!! (see my link
from above and scroll down for pictures of it).

Something interesting is happening to that sample too.while it's been
sitting in my garage, I've noticed some separation going on in the
mixture. In the bottom of the sample I'm seeing some gelling occuring (but
I thought DSE wasn't SUPPOSED to gel-- hmmm...guess their claims aren't
holding a lot of water here).

I took the sample inside and heated it up w/ a heat gun (stunk something
nasty) and, wouldn't you know it, the gelling went away!

You can see these pictures in the thread I linked above.

Now, I'm not claiming that biodiesel is the wonder fuel of the earth, it
also has gelling issues, but what I am claiming is that biodieseler's are
at least up front about the issues.

1) It can gel
2) you should use it accordingly.
-- In the winter, most folks just blend it w/ diesel fuel

What I am claiming also though is that DSE seems to make some claims that
aren't entirely accurate:
1- Their stuff GELS too! (they claim not to have any gelling issues down
to 30 deg F--my garage is warmer than that and I'm seeing the gelling)
2- It really is just zylene and a bunch of other solvents that they're
jacking the price up on & selling you in this bottle.

A good friend of mine, in the name of research, bought the stuff &
together we looked at the literature and also the product that came w/ it.

You get this little manual about how to make their "Diesel Secret" using
their "magic super duper potion" (Pahh--leeeaaassee!) and then you are
told to go get some Kerosene, Gasoline and some filtering stuff.

Some of the issues I have with it is that their method:
1- Doesn't adequately deal w/ the glycerin still in the oil and
2- Seems to be just an overpriced method for "blending".

Running "blended diesel fuel" with "veggie oil" should still be done using
heated tanks or else you risk gelling and then there's still the glycerin
coking issue.

They now even sell you on using their "super duper catalyst potion" that
optimizes the burning of the fuel.

OK, now for the good stuff.

If you REALLY want to do DSE, save the bucks & go down to your local
Wal-Mart and buy a bottle of THORO. Go get some Kerosene, some Gasoline,
and a big garbage can to mix it all in.

Filter the heck out of your oil, then pour some of it into the garbage can.
Next, pour a couple bottles of THORO in there with it (THORO is acetone,
which is similar to what the DSE Secret Wonder Juice is...just a solvent),
pour in some Kerosene, mix in some Gasoline and whoala! You've made your
own super duper DSE Wonder Fuel (and at half their price).

Anyway, if you want to read the nitty-gritty about what's really in it,
just go read the links I have posted in the thread linked above

Also, a while ago we had quite the discussion here about adding Acetone to
diesel fuel (essentially the same in principle of what Diesel Secret is
doing...do a search for

There is also the possibility that the aluminum threads are buggered
or filled with carbon too. Running the proper size tap through all
the holes should set things right. Aluminum also galls very easily,
you probably didn't help matters too much by trying to force the new
GPs in. They should thread most of the way in with little resistance,
such that you should be able to do it with your fingers.
Whatever you decide to do, spin the engine over quite a few times
with the GPs out, so it can spit out anything that breaks loose and
falls in.

I was going to ask opinions from the list about this. I see that someone has

Send it to the manufacturer with a note similar to what you posted

Offer? Depends on the smoke...how heavy it is, if it quits when it warms
up or if it smokes all the time. Also, depends on if I feel the condition
of the interior and features is good. I'm thinking $1000-1500, less if I
think a blown headgasket is causing the smoke.

Also, how much are you planning to offer?

On 5/12/06, Dillon, Meade LCDR <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I'd recommend a dot 4 fluid; Valvoline makes a nice synthetic brake

I gravity bleed vice pump/close valve/release pedal/open valve & repeat,
because if the brake fluid hasn't been changed regularly, there probably
is corrosion and crap in the master cylinder, and when you go full
stroke the seals run over that garbage and get torn up, and then you
need a new MC. Faster to pressure bleed if you want to spring for the
tool or make your own.

Why don't you pull out your old inspection sheet and list the categories,

they

Re: [MBZ] Windshield Washer Squirter

2006-05-13 Thread Peter Frederick
I've fixed a few of these by pulling the hose off the inside and
spraying water from a garden hose at high velocity backwards. Quite a
bit of crud usually comes out!

Aim with an unfolded paper clip so that the whole wiper area is wetted
when the wiper is operated. This usually requires some sprays to aim
fairly low, else they blow over the car at speed, wasting all that
fluid and sprinkling the car behind you!

Yes, there was a time when the Dutch had large numbers of young German
male "undocumented migrants" coming across their unsecured border to do
work that the Dutch did not want to do, but I don't think getting a
taste of their beer was a major factor in this migration though I am
sure that it was a minor factor. Some of them did drive Benzes though,
but many walked. The German government encouraged this practice for
awhile until persuaded otherwise by world opinion. Now they all get
along pretty well, and the border is not really much of an issue, but
beer is still a point of contention among the cultural elite.

It will be 5 o'clock in 7 hours, I think I will have to go adjust my
squirters...

Just a word of warning when using pins/etc for aiming the nozzle, if the
nozzle has become stuck with age it is possible to break off the pin in the
nozzle. How do I know this? Well I am a heavy handed clutzso
things tend to break when I am around.
Also make sure the water line is removed when cleaning nozzle so any yucky
stuff can disapear back to where it came from.

Get a bread twist tie and strip off the paper or plastic, curve about an
inch+half to about the radius of a quarter, and use this end to ream out
the squirter nozzle (the curve helps it slide in all the way). You can
use a push-pin to aim the nozzle -- these things appear to be little
balls with holes in them that rotate around in the black plastic
housing. Also clear out the hoses and such. Leave this expensive tool
in your car and use it every week or two.

The blue wsw fluid seems to evaporate and leave crusty blue stuff in the
nozzles and hoses, clogging them up. Use Mobil1 synthetic wsw fluid
mixed with German water (this comes in brown and green bottles, can be
found at many grocery stores in civilized locales). Pour in the wsw
washer fluid and drink the German water while doing the procedure, and
you should be OK.

What else? How do these things go bad (the actual squirters - assuming
that's the problem).

Or could it be the motor that powers the deal?
