OK Kaleb. Now I'm here. And here is something I found in my bounced emai (to the old URL) David Brodbeck wrote: Mostly the speed limit is just enforced more strictly on out-of-staters. ……Ohio, in particular, is so infamous for this that Michigan residents have a joke that the speed of light in Ohio is 65 mph. I've heard this for years, but seriously doubt the Ohio State Troopers are targeting Michigan drivers. I live in Ohio and have many extended family members in Michigan. Furthermore, I commute on I-75,daily. I-75 is Michigan's main artery through Ohio. Ohio strictly enforces speed limits upon EVERYBODY. When driving in Michigan, I note little regard by ANYBODY for the speedlimits. When commuting in Ohio, if someone passes me on I-75 like I'm tied to a tree, the passing car will very often have Michigan plates. I conclude that Michigan drivers are just not conditioned to expect the strict enforcement that Ohio drivers are used to. But maybe it's just all a matter of perception. Ned Kleinhenz

Re: [MBZ] [SL]Hood Pad Glue
David, If you do decide to remove the old hood liner. Use an old sheet/drop cloth to cover the engine compartment. Gets messy without it. And be careful with the putty knife/? when you clean it up, so you don't score the underside of the hood. There are fiberglass blades that are better out there... Gerry - I have been on eBay for years, with very few problems [286 feedback with 100$ positive]. Many sellers use the cheapest [and slowest] shipping available, and it can take some time, especially with the delays of packing and shipping schedules for some. Some folks only ship once a week, but they should let you know that. Check the seller's feedback first [I don't buy anything from sellers with very low or negative feedback unless it is really cheap] and that should give you some idea if others have had problems. This being Tues I make the assumption the 48 hours started over the weekend. If this is one of the thousands of businesses on eBay they often only count business days. Mike's advice is good on not waiting... the rules can get a bit arcane, between eBay and PayPal. You have to wait a certain amount of time to make the complaint, yet you only have 30 days from the transaction date to file a PayPal claim (or so it was last summer, when I got ripped that way). Re: [MBZ] 300SD - 85 - Throttle linkage
You've put something back wrong, or something is caught (or binding) on another piece. I've had this happen on top of the valve cover, where you (I assume) have two pivots where multiple linkages join. Make sure the pivots are not catching. Also, it's actually possible for the linkages to work with at least one of the pivots spun 180 deg around, so make sure they are okay. Anyone on the list got an '85 SD and a digicam, to send George a quick pic of the linkage setup? In Ohio, the rare nutcase is very common. They also pass on the right shoulder. We also have our fair share of silver haired drivers that are so short, the car looks unoccupied from behind. They usually have the clip on wrap-around rear view mirror and the amber sunglasses that fit over their trifocals. we can't compare XJ Cherokees to the Full Size J**ps; XJs (like those of the diesel vintage) didn't weigh anywhere near that much. since they're frame-less unitized construction, even with the wife and myself in ours, our modified mid-90s 4x4 XJ with a 4.0L and automatic trans weighs in under under 4000 lbs. basic feeling amongst XJ enthusiasts (even us cross-over diesel enthusiasts) is that the diesel motor used in those mid-80s XJs just plain sucked. interesting side notes; now that DCX has announced that they're going to do a diesel Grand Cherokee, they announced yesterday that they're going to discontinue the anemic-performing diesel KJ (Liberty) for the US market (citing cost concerns with trying to meet the more stringent emissions regulations coming into effect next year). cheers! e Kaleb C. Look under a 70s wagoneer (or even an 84-91 grand wagoneer), and you will not see a dana 35, coil sprung front axle, or unibody construction. Second, a v8 quadratrac four door full size jeep from the seventies with the ultra-rare two-tank option weighs 4600 lbs on the scales. I have one. [And yes, it really needs the second tank. An 85 four banger gasser was right around 3000 lbs (maybe 3100? been a while). The 2.1L TD was fine offroad, but it really was not powerful on the street. It didn't even have enough power to stress the fragile-as-glass peugeot five speed it came with, that the sixes destroyed. K

The gas gauge was broken, so we filled up every 100 miles, which made it depressingly easy to figure the fuel economy. If I remember right we got 10 mpg solo, 6 mpg pulling a snowmobile trailer.

One of my colleagues brought their 560SL into Lightning only to have it returned to them with a torn and heavily damaged dash. Lightning called it unavoidable damage and refused to accept responsibility for the damage. I have heard good things about Triumph Auto Glass in Lilburn off Hwy 29 but have not used them personally. Re: [MBZ] [Fwd: Re: MB Info Access-to http://skinnerbox.steaky.org/]
Yea, things change. MB is just real corporate like any thing else. When I got my 300SD summer before last I was quite surprised that there were no paper repair books from MB (and apparently no transmission books in any format) only CD with crappy PDF-s In 1980 when I quit my job overseas at the NASA tracking station on Ascension Island I hung out in Florida for a bit and bought a 1970 280SE 4dr. (I loved that car). The biggest mistake I made with it was having the transmission worked on by an Inde Trans shop.(I had some other work done on the car by an Inde that was from S.A. (Argentina? Memory failing on that point) and he was very good. Getting back the trans shop got the car back and took in home to San Francisco (Where I was originally from) never was quite sure about the transmission, which in about 3 months died. Shopped around for a repair, prices were outrages (for me any way). At this point I knew I needed to know more about the car. Found a phone number for MB corporate on the East coast some where and was able to order a paper book for the car and a Transmission book. In time my books arrived. Looked into a used transmission, deal fell through so I dismantled the one I had, Wrong number of plates in one on the clutch packs and all kinds of other fun Got close to buying parts from the dealer until I discovered the valve body had the wrong part number and would not be accepted for exchange. About this time I found a Inde repair guy a little north of San Jose. Had a large shop with a number of people working for him, He was older and still had all of his training certificates on the wall for servicing Mercedes Benz Issued by the Studebaker Packard Corporation. When I met him I made some comment about what cars were built during the war and with good English in a very strong German accent he informed me that manufacturing was consumed by the production of panzers. (I will never know if this was serious or a joke, kind of hard to tell) I asked him about parts (for my transmission project), my current parts estimate total was exceeding $700. He told me that he could get me an exchange transmission from the old country in a crate for $1000 exchange. I told him I all ready took it apart, his reply was as long as it looks complete it would be accepted as a core. I went home, reassembled it, brought it in and got a remanf. Transmission. Worked fine. 2 years latter the car got totaled. I loved that car It's demise saddens me to this day. I still find it strange that MB doesn't allow reprints of the older service books and only sells the CD-s That is a bit corporate of them. [MBZ] 240D from VA to PA, need advice..
I'm in need of some advice. I have a car I want to buy that's located in Virginia. It's been sitting for a while so it's not inspected and it doesn't have plates. I live in PA and I'd like to drive it back. (Towing isn't an option b/c of other complications for this trip.) I don't think I can get plates for it in PA since I don't have the title. I don't think I want to try to get plates in VA since that would entail paying a bunch of fees that I'll just have to pay again in PA. You guys that buy a lot of cars, what do you do? Once I get it back in PA it's an easy process to get it properly inspected, get the title transferred and get new plates for it. ...Kevin 87 300TD 284k miles -- Thank God for Microsoft -- Linus Torvalds

I guess I didn't word my little rant very well. You must deal with someone other than a dealer to get any satisfaction. The Classics guys have been top notch the few times I've delt with them Thanks for setting me straight, Herr Doktor. Bob Rentfro '77 300D 154K Litchfield Park, AZ
Re: [MBZ] 77-83 240D Glow system

Can the 77 system be made to work in a 83 car? I really can't think of a good reason to put the old series plugs and plug setup in a car with parallel plugs, especially if you live somewhere that gets cold. One could probably buy a set of fast plugs from rusty and use the 83's wiring to make it work, I'd imagine, but that would really only solve the glow plug issues, not issues with transmissions being different (if an automatic) or whatnot.
