I phoned Beissbarth ( the manufacturer of the spreader bar) and learned
that their price is appx. $ 199 for the spreader bar.

It has an MB number of 900 589 012700.

This may be a rather simple item to make for a fraction of the cost. I
am sure that the Beisbarth spreader has a built in
torque device pre set at 90-110 NM. However, it might also be done
with two short pieces of pipe with plates welded on the
end. The middle can be fashioned with a 18 piece of all thread and two
nuts. You will however need a torque wrench and

a crows foot wrench to tighten the nut.

Your thoughts on the subject..

The local alignment shop says it adds a extra amount of toe-in to
compensate for the spreader bar being unavailable
regards

If they do that with a relatively new car or one that's been recently
rebuilt, there will be too much toe and if they do it on a worn one
there won't be enough.

That's why Mercedes REQUIRES a spreader bar - so that it can be done
correctly

Seems like a REALLY poor excuse to justify not buying and using a ~$50
tool. How do they justify not using the locking/centering screw to hold
the steering box/wheel in the SINGLE correct position?

The only thing I know of that is scarier than Lucas is Magneti Marelli.
The

only thing that saves my Moto Guzzi-s is that they have Bosch starters and
charging systems. Apparently Bosch bought out merged with Magneti Marelli
in

1999. I did not know this. Now to be fair Lucas is/was a big company and
had/has products for aerospace that are made with extreme quality however
it has been my personal experience that this is not true of their consumer
automotive electrics.

It is said that at the Moto Guzzi factory the workers come to work early
and

very meticulously, with great passion do all the mechanical assembly and
paint most of the day's bikes. Then they break for a late lunch where lots
of wine is consumed and all of the towns girls are placed at extreme risk.
Then the boss goes through the town and rounds up all the workers and
returns them to the factory. At this time all the bikes are wired and the
unfortunate few are painted. I don't know this for a fact but all my Guzzi
friends don't/won't dispute it.

Anyway AU$12,550 for a bog stock 86 201 with 240k k's on the clock is just
about crackhead territory.

Sounds like it don't even have a sunroof or power windows.

5 litres is about 169 fluid ounces.
A US gallon is 128 ounces.
100km is 62.13 miles.
47mpg with a 2.5 automatic isn't going to be possible, even if you
cruise at 60kph.

However, it might also be done
with two short pieces of pipe with plates welded on the
end. The middle can be fashioned with a 18 piece of all thread and
two
nuts. You will however need a torque wrench and
a crows foot wrench to tighten the nut.

Re: [MBZ] LUCAS

2006-06-16 Thread Levi Smith

Personally, I'll stick to the Fuji or what-not items under my Subaru...
Lucas is pretty low on my list, Bosch is maybe medium, and GM would be
somewhere between the two of them. I'd consider most of the Japanese
electronics in the good category, quite high in my book... Or at least
about the best I can think of...
Heck, I've yet to meet an American manufacturer that could make electronics
good enough to last for terribly long in farm duty on my parents dairy
farm. That includes BobCats, Olivers, White's, Case's, ehh probably
something else I'm forgetting...

I had a Honda CRX for a while that acted like it was only running on maybe 3
cylinders, couldn't figure out what it was... Finally tried monkeying with
the computer... Low and behold, it sits directly under the passenger seat
where apparently the salt from the roads had eaten through the floor to a
degree and through the case of the computer. I pulled the computer and
dumped several ounces or more of salt and some other dirt out of there. I
couldn't believe the thing was still running at all! Now if that was a
Lucas or GM computer, it probably would have died long before the salt
ripped open the floor and the case of the computer to get to it

are reasonable sources for speaker components. The web sites can be a bit to
navigate:

MCM  [Audio-Video] - [Automotive Electronics Speaker}

Parts Exp [Speakers] - [Car Audio] - [Automotive Speakers (named table on
right of page)]

Both sites have various weird shaped automotive speakers. There are gobs of
audio, speakers and assorted electronic AV consumer stuff on these sites.
Most of the market for Replacement automotive speakers involves the use of a
inverter powered booster amplifier that could be used for a arc welder /
satellite tracking antenna servo amplifier / deep sea sonar system and is
most likely not needed is this application. Historically oval shaped
speakers in rectangular / oval frames are not quite as good as round ones
however for a car that has holes in it I would use what ever is the easiest
to fit and not look ugly. Speakers that are designed for 100W RMS plus power
levels with voice coils wound out of 4/0 buss bar are totally unnecessary
but I would get something with a magnet larger that squires family jewels.

[MBZ] 560 SEL CUTS OUT

2006-06-16 Thread Michael C Boerner
Sorry Peter, thought you owned the 560.

Peter, what year is the 560 SEL? I had a 75 450SEL that was a nightmare
with cutoff problems. After too many episodes to count, including fuel
filter, many sets of electronic ignition trigger points, injector cleaner,
etc, etc. my techs advised that the distributor bushings were worn to the
point that fumes were contaminating the points. This car would foul points
in less than a week of driving, but would get better than 20 mpg for the
first few days. If you have the same distributor, and you've already
changed the fuel filter, I'd start with the distributor, in particular the
resistance across the points. If you're getting good contact, and good
spark (or if someone has already replaced the distributor), you might look
toward the TSU, transistorized switch unit, if your car has one. The
germanium transistor has a tendency to faint in hot weather, going open
until it cools off a bit. I had this happen on two cars, a 1970 280S, and
the 75 450SEL. The other potential cut-out problem with the 450SEL involved
the Rube Goldberg method of firing the injectors. I vaguely recollect
four additional sets of points, housed below the ignition points in the
distributor, with a truckload of shorted wiring, whose job it was to open
the injectors. Once I repaired all the shorts and opens there, the car
would run great for a few days at a time, as long as it had new or cleaned
ignition points. I hope your 560SEL has newer technology than all this. If
not, you might consider a 300SDL. I have an 87 (yes the catalyst and the
turbo were replaced) that I intend keeping til the wheels fall off. As a
backup, I've also got the same engine in an 87 300D. Both cars are very
powerful examples of the breed (148 HP), although the new diesel is even
more powerful.

Good Luck with the cutout problem

IIRC, that is one of the functions of the citric acid.

It IS going to rain, dude. Face it. I gave up cursing it long ago. If you
don't believe me, start staining your deck. Two summers ago it took me TWO
MONTHS to do a medium-sized deck (bearing in mind you need 72 hours of
dry/sun conditions after rain before using the product). Man it rained a lot
that year, not hard but often.

2006-06-16 Thread George Larribeau

IN EUROPE there are about a dozen makers of anti-freeze that meet
Mercedes specs. All of the MB anti-freeze sold in the US is made by
Valvoline - most is sold to Mercedes and the remainder is sold as Zerex
G-05. The Peak Lifetime meets the Mercedes specs as well. NOTHING
Prestone makes comes even close (despite their claim to the contrary -
look for the Mercedes spec number on their data sheet - it isn't there)!

Marshall

Now G-05 is not the only antifreeze product from Zerex, right? Must be sure
that it is G-05? Is there a MB spec number on the bottle that indicates some
documentation / requirement that it meets? Or is this info only findable
from the manufacture?

Its funny Peak was a 'discount brand' at HiLow store around here during the
glycol 'shortage' in the 90's. An was considered cheaper than Prestone (in
marketing terms, yes I read Dilbert) Go figure..

Hopefully, your oil did not defy the laws of physics and floated to
the top (coolant reservoir) where you can mop it up or wash out with
soapy water. Dish soap in higher than normal concentrations does a
pretty good job on oil and grease.
I have used soapy water in the cooling systems of cars that had a
particularly bad mess in them. A few fresh water flushes after seemed
to get it all out. This works best in a warm engine.

Some liquid Tide will de-oil the system just fine (or you can use the
cleaner that Mercedes recommends - if you can find it). Citric acid is
then used to remove mineral deposits (it doesn't de-oil anything).

I'm as frugal as the next guy but for $200 I'd buy one. Even at my pay rate
8 hours of fiddling with making something thats not exactly right would buy
one...
Never mind the fact that the only reason I'd buy one is to haul it to an
alignment shop that doesn't have one so they can do the job right. I can't
see them wanting to muck with something I'd invented. I also can't see my
wanting to pay for that.

However, it might also be done
with two short pieces of pipe with plates welded on the
end. The middle can be fashioned with a 18 piece of all thread and
two
nuts. You will however need a torque wrench and
a crows foot wrench to tighten the nut.

Your thoughts on the subject..

Constantine

Depends on which side of the car you're on! If you're on the drivers
side of a US car, the spreader bar would be on the contact the left
front wheel behind the 8-9 o'clock position. If you were on the right
side, it would be 3-4 o'clock.

I used Prestone radiator flush on a VW with a blown head gasket. It
acted like a mild detergent. It seemed to work pretty well at getting
the oil out of the radiator and such. (You want it gone -- it can impede
heat transfer and soften hoses.) The plastic tanks had the worst
build-up because the oil floats to the top; I ended up taking those out
and scrubbing them with a bottle brush.
