Re: [MBZ] 201 front suspension help
Vising the 'spare' tie rod in the parts car's steering knuckle, I was able to break loose the end I'm interested in learning about. It's a 19mm LH jam nut, jamming a flatted squeeze collar (looks like a nut, but it's not) against the threaded and slotted (pinchable) body of the rod. Easy to take apart in fact, if it's not too rusted. Now I'll move on to the ones I'm interested in mix-n-matching. They've been soaked in penetrant since yesterday. -- Jim

[MBZ] Losts of White smoke
My 300GD ( OM617.91 ) is currently busy with body repairs as a repair shop for a few months now - the vehicle generally gets started and run for a few seconds to move it out into the yard and then back again in the evening. The vehicle then was driven 15 km to another facility and the driver reported a large quantity of white smoke bellowing out the exhaust while engine was warming up - after which the smoke stopped and all was fine. I am some 2000 km from the facility and not able to determine first hand what is going on and was wondering what could have caused this! Any ideas PEter
[MBZ] Water leak in 300 CDT
We have a 1982 300CDT which has two water leaks into the car that I cannot figure out. First leak is in the front above the passenger side under the dash. I have looked under there, shone flashlights from the outside in a dark garage and cannot see anything that would give me a clue. I was in the passenger seat the other day in a rain storm and the water pours in a stream of water. Is there a hose to redirect water somewhere up there? The second leak is in the trunk area, again passenger side. It seems to come in under the rear dash area somewhere. Flashlight is not showing me anything and there is only so long I can lay in the trunk with it closed. The matting is soaked and the back of the rear seat is also wet. Hints would very much be appreciated. Thanks Dan

you need to replace your front and rear window seals. In the front, you might also have a hole in the firewall under the battery tray. ...And they came off fairly easily, now that I knew where/how to apply force. I counted the turns to remove the end from the car's rod (19), and put back the 'new' end to match. Again, this should be close enough until I can get the car aligned. The boots on the tie rod were starting to crack and tear, though the joints themselves were still clean and greasy. I used acetone and Shoe Goo to patch the tears. I really ought to replace the tie rod, but this job should do for a couple of years. I've got more immediate problems to deal with before I go spending money I don't have on the car. Moving on to the icky ball joint problem... -- Jim

Then I used a grease gun with a needlenose point (the same thing you do door hinges with) to fill the joint with grease, and put the boot back. (That isn't all that easy due to the retaining spring.) There was a small tear in the boot, so I'm going to clean and Shoe Goo it, though that's probably pointless. Maybe after breakfast. Test drive time! It started right up, and there was no sign of the former squirrely handling. Seemed decent, and I even worked up some speed on some corners. I don't know what they're supposed to handle like, I'm told they handle particularly well, but I found nothing wrong with it. I had to fiddle with the hazard switch again to get the signals working, but there's nothing new about _that_. -- Jim

[MBZ] Sudden loss of oil pressure - Problem found
After many weeks and a few red herrings, we finally tracked down the oil pressure issue plaguing my '95 E300D. Checking through MB's tech bulletins, I thought I had nailed it. On the 606 motors (and probably others) the camshafts are hollow and oil runs down them. There is a freeze plug at either end of the camshaft. According to MB, these freeze plugs can fail and become dislodged. When this happens, all the oil gets pumped up into the valve cover and the low oil light comes on, followed by loss of oil pressure. Since this sounded like my symptoms, we tore down the top of the motor and pulled the valve cover (a time-intensive job on a 606). Sadly, when the camshafts where checked, it was confirmed that all freeze plugs were in place and not leaking. The next step was to check the pan. Instead of dropping the pan, we removed the oil cooler from the side of the pan (which required draining the oil and the coolant, since it is an oil to water heat exchanger). Once removed, the issue quickly became obvious. The screw plug that retains the oil pressure relief valve to the oil pump had backed out to the point where only one or two threads kept it from dropping into the pan. This effectively removed any preload on the oil pressure relief valve spring and put it into bypass mode. Since neither the oil pump nor the oil pressure relief valve had ever been replaced or removed on this vehicle, I am at a loss as to how it would have backed out. It was re-torqued to 50 Nm, the vehicle was reassembled, and we manually primed the lubrication system through the pressure sender fitting to make sure all bearings had oil. The engine was restarted and oil pressure immediately returned. Now, I realize that my particular vehicle tends to exhibit problems that by themselves are unusual and rare and in combination almost inconceivably unlikely, but if this happened to me it could happen to someone else. If you happen to have the oil pan off your 606 motor (other 60x might be similar), you might want to re-torque the oil pressure relief valve screw plug while you're in there. If you happen to loose oil pressure, this might be something you want to check. 18-5031HA in the service manual covers the installation and removal of the oil pressure relief valve. Regards, J.B. Re: [MBZ] the same old refrain...
What always gave me pause is the oil control in older engines is rarely perfect, and 0-weight oil seems like it would leak out much easier. If it pours like water, is it really going to stay in the engine? The Marshall answer would be to fix the leaks, of course. :) This is what I wonder about, however I don't think the '0' part is the problem. For me leaks are usually a problem when a motor is hot. I am doing a fairly large service on my HD Electra Glide and am going to attempt M1 oil throughout. In the past M1 oils have proved difficult to keep inside of air cooled motor cycles, and in my experience Milwaukee Iron in high on the problem list. If it works out I will do a top end on my Moto Guzzi and try it there. burned out glow plug or two -- fuel doesn't burn until the engine warms up a bit. Other causes are blow head gasket (coolant in the combustion chambers) and a failed vacuum modulator on the tranny, allowing transmission fluid to go down the intake. The latter smells terrible, easy to check. Peter

On page 30, in discussing the recent board meeting in Chicago. They are finally going to publish the magazine themselves. Let me retype the appropriate paragraph: ³President O¹Sullivan reported on progress on THE STAR contract. Eight viable responses to MBCA¹s request for proposals were received; three likely candidates were selected by THE STAR committee and interviewed. A final successful candidate was chosen to edit and publish THE STAR when the current contract expires. He indicated that Toad Hall Motorbooks had sent a letter to board members stating it would not respond to the request for proposals the club had issued. [Toad Hall Motorbooks, my business, had proposed to MBCA that instead of using the method described in the request for proposals, whereby the club would effectively function as publisher the existing contract be renegotiated and extended. That proposal was declined.
