Didn't Matchbox have a 114 when they were current? I was too busy
buying cars like the Iso Griffo at the time to care about MBZ sedans,
so none in my collection. They cost me $1 each, which was a lot of money

Re: [MBZ] 201 front suspension help

2006-07-17 Thread Jim Cathey

Vising the 'spare' tie rod in the parts car's steering knuckle, I was
able to break loose the end I'm interested in learning about. It's a
19mm LH jam nut, jamming a flatted squeeze collar (looks like a nut,
but it's not) against the threaded and slotted (pinchable) body of the
rod. Easy to take apart in fact, if it's not too rusted. Now I'll
move on to the ones I'm interested in mix-n-matching. They've been
soaked in penetrant since yesterday.

[MBZ] Losts of White smoke

2006-07-17 Thread Peter Merle
My 300GD ( OM617.91 ) is currently busy with body repairs as a repair
shop for a few months now - the vehicle generally gets started and run
for a few seconds to move it out into the yard and then back again in
the evening. The vehicle then was driven 15 km to another facility and
the driver reported a large quantity of white smoke bellowing out the
exhaust while engine was warming up - after which the smoke stopped and
all was fine. I am some 2000 km from the facility and not able to
determine first hand what is going on and was wondering what could have
caused this!
Any ideas

[MBZ] Water leak in 300 CDT

2006-07-17 Thread Dan Schriber
We have a 1982 300CDT which has two water leaks into the car that I cannot
figure out.

First leak is in the front above the passenger side under the dash. I have
looked under there, shone flashlights from the outside in a dark garage and
cannot see anything that would give me a clue. I was in the passenger seat
the other day in a rain storm and the water pours in a stream of water.

Is there a hose to redirect water somewhere up there?

The second leak is in the trunk area, again passenger side. It seems to come
in under the rear dash area somewhere. Flashlight is not showing me anything
and there is only so long I can lay in the trunk with it closed. The matting
is soaked and the back of the rear seat is also wet.

Hints would very much be appreciated.

Thanks

you need to replace your front and rear window seals. In the front, you
might also have a hole in the firewall under the battery tray.

Yeah, I'm told that acid from the battery commonly eats a hole through

...And they came off fairly easily, now that I knew where/how to apply
force. I counted the turns to remove the end from the car's rod (19),
and put back the 'new' end to match. Again, this should be close
enough until I can get the car aligned. The boots on the tie rod were
starting to crack and tear, though the joints themselves were still
clean and greasy. I used acetone and Shoe Goo to patch the tears. I
really ought to replace the tie rod, but this job should do for a
couple of years. I've got more immediate problems to deal with before
I go spending money I don't have on the car. Moving on to the icky
ball joint problem...

Along similar lines, if your climate Control seems incurably phucked and you
can't seem to hold vacuum in ANY of the lines, check the vacuum line harness
right near that pesky old battery. Give the harness a squeeze between thumb and
forefinger. If if goes crunch the battery acid as gotten into the harness and
destroyed the lines.

curt quoted his barber as saying, You PAID somebody for a car with a
quarter million miles and you drive it over twenty thousand miles a
year

And *that's* why W123's go for $500-$3000 these days. If everyone
knew
they could buy a Mercedes for 1/3 the cost of a 5 year old 100k mile,
clapped out Honda, people would scramble to buy these cars - and drive
the
price up.

So you keeps your mouth shut and we keep buying nice, 25 year old 300D
turbos for $1000 and driving them for the next 10+ years.

Wow, thats pretty neat. If it were out here I'd be surely considering it. Needs
spheres (maybe just a line but probably spheres) and a new axle and some TLC
but it'd be a $3k car after that based on my rough survey of wagon prices...
It'd be really cool put put a 4spd in... I know a guy who has one, he says
its more driveable with the 4spd than it was with the auto.

I loved my wagon but it was a basket case.

I guess being tight and rusted in there is better than being loose in
there -- my son was driving the TD when the BJ ball snapped out of the
socket, leading to considerable consternation and subsequent repairs.
It was somewhere down on my todo list too, along with rubber bits on the
control arms, but it asserted itself to the top.

Ugh. I slid back the boot over the ball joint and it was absolutely
_filled_ with rust. I blew it out with air and then sprayed in PB
penetrant. I then worked the joint a bunch of times, then sluiced
it out with PB. I repeated a time or two and then blew it out with
air again. Then I used a grease gun with a needlenose point (the same
thing you do door hinges with) to fill the joint with grease, and put
the boot back. (That isn't all that easy due to the retaining
spring.) There was a small tear in the boot, so I'm going to clean
and Shoe Goo it, though that's probably pointless. Maybe after
breakfast.

Yes, this joint should be replaced, but it isn't yet loose, and I
think the cleaning and lubrication will give it a new lease on life,
for at least the initial shakeout of the car. It will remain on the
to-do list. I just don't much care for heavy wrenching, such as a ball
joint replacement requires, nor do I have the special tools required.
I wield a mean soldering iron, but hand me heavy tools and watch me
hurt myself.

[MBZ] Sudden loss of oil pressure - Problem found

2006-07-17 Thread J.B. Hebert
After many weeks and a few red herrings, we finally tracked down the
oil pressure issue plaguing my '95 E300D. Checking through MB's tech
bulletins, I thought I had nailed it. On the 606 motors (and
probably others) the camshafts are hollow and oil runs down
them. There is a freeze plug at either end of the
camshaft. According to MB, these freeze plugs can fail and become
dislodged. When this happens, all the oil gets pumped up into the
valve cover and the low oil light comes on, followed by loss of oil
pressure. Since this sounded like my symptoms, we tore down the top
of the motor and pulled the valve cover (a time-intensive job on a
606). Sadly, when the camshafts where checked, it was confirmed that
all freeze plugs were in place and not leaking. The next step was to
check the pan. Instead of dropping the pan, we removed the oil
cooler from the side of the pan (which required draining the oil and
the coolant, since it is an oil to water heat exchanger). Once
removed, the issue quickly became obvious. The screw plug that
retains the oil pressure relief valve to the oil pump had backed out
to the point where only one or two threads kept it from dropping into
the pan. This effectively removed any preload on the oil pressure
relief valve spring and put it into bypass mode. Since neither the
oil pump nor the oil pressure relief valve had ever been replaced or
removed on this vehicle, I am at a loss as to how it would have
backed out. It was re-torqued to 50 Nm, the vehicle was reassembled,
and we manually primed the lubrication system through the pressure
sender fitting to make sure all bearings had oil. The engine was
restarted and oil pressure immediately returned.

Now, I realize that my particular vehicle tends to exhibit problems
that by themselves are unusual and rare and in combination almost
inconceivably unlikely, but if this happened to me it could happen to
someone else. If you happen to have the oil pan off your 606 motor
(other 60x might be similar), you might want to re-torque the oil
pressure relief valve screw plug while you're in there. If you
happen to loose oil pressure, this might be something you want to
check. 18-5031HA in the service manual covers the installation and
removal of the oil pressure relief valve.

J.B. Hebert

What always gave me pause is the oil control in older engines is rarely
perfect, and 0-weight oil seems like it would leak out much easier. If
it pours like water, is it really going to stay in the engine? The
Marshall answer would be to fix the leaks, of course. :)

This is what I wonder about, however I don't think the '0' part is the
problem. For me leaks are usually a problem when a motor is hot. I am doing
a fairly large service on my HD Electra Glide and am going to attempt M1 oil
throughout. In the past M1 oils have proved difficult to keep inside of air
cooled motor cycles, and in my experience Milwaukee Iron in high on the
problem list. If it works out I will do a top end on my Moto Guzzi and try
it there. (again)
