[MBZ] speedo not working

2006-08-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Took the 560SEL out today for the first time in a while. Did take it
out just yesterday and Im pretty sure the speedo was working then. I
know it was working fine last time it was droven. Today I noticed
speedo and odo is not working at all. This seems strange. I have never
seen this happen before. Its usually the odo that quits but the speedo
keeps working fine. Its like all the sudden its just not getting a
signal. I checked the pickup at the tranny end and it seems fine.
Pulled the cluster and its plugged in the back. Is there a fuse or
something I need to be looking for that I am missing? All the other
instruments work fine. Thing has 130k on it. Guess I might end up
having to swap in another speedo to see if it works then. But would
want to find one with similar mileage on it if I have to replace it.

Hah!!!

That is the clue!

If you just create a PDF of a text file, it will have text embedded.
What you want is an _image_ file of a text file.

Someone mentioned "print screen" image - that would probable be
easiest...

Otherwise, I'm not thinking of any programs that convert a text file
to an image file.

Actually Tom there isn't much difference between what they consider lifetime
and say the cheaper 1 year guarantee part. The lifetime is just made with the
same grade material to the factory specs like what was originally on the
vehicle. The cheaper part is just a softer material and not necessarily better
for your rotors or drums. They may wear faster, but they also might have less
resistance to heat and could cause your rotors or drums to warp.

I never understood the idea behind "lifetime" brake pads and shoes.
Something must wear. If not the pad and shoes; the rotors and drums will
wear. The whole point of a pad or shoe is to have something
"sacrificial" that is easily replaced. I prefer replacing pads and shoes
to rotors and drums.

Re: [MBZ] 201 status

2006-08-10 Thread Jim Cathey

Looked at the power wiring to the trunk. Can resurrect a nice big
fused unswitched line and a mating ground, no problem. I have a
junkbox rear window defogger relay (107 820 00 10) and
its mating connector, which might serve. It has a nice mounting ear
on it already. Internally it's a simple analog circuit using a
1000 uF 16V capacitor as a timing element. (It rests at 12V
and once triggered begins to decay down to about 5V whereupon the
relay trips off.) The relay draws 42 uA of current when off,
so it can be used in an unswitched environment. It draws about
120 mA when on. I hooked it up on the bench and wired a spare
12V dashboard clock to it to find out how long it really runs once
triggered. The clock registered about 17 minutes. There is
plenty of room in the relay shell to add more capacitance.

There are unused speaker wires running forwards from the trunk to the
driver's footwell area, I can perhaps use one to tap the (now unused)
kickdown switch input to get an "Engine Running" signal (from the
Klima), perhaps even better than "Ignition On" for the purpose of
gating heavy loads.

Time to rotate the tires to put the badly-worn one (from the previous
bad alignment, one presumes) on the back. No problem, except that I
finally noticed that the front and back tires are of different sizes!
The front (worn) tires are 195/60R15, and the back are 195/65R15. So
I rotated both sides to keep it symmetrical. I wonder which size is
the correct one?

I dug around in the junk box looking for capacitors. While I found
one or two that would fit in the shell and were of appropriate values,
they were too leaky to serve. The only non-leaky one I found was a
1000 uF 35V unit that was 'new', and much too large to fit in
the shell. With it in circuit, the delay was about 30 minutes. I
tried one of the more leaky ones in parallel too, and got almost an
hour's delay. I tested the relay and found that it indeed will supply
power indefinitely so long as the start control lead is held high.
(This will be hooked to the kickdown output of the Klima.) I think
that it just re-arms itself quickly when it times out, as I don't see
any way to maintain the charge on the timing capacitor through the
start terminal.

I removed the first-aid box and cut a rectangular hole in the side for
an old 114/115 rear dome light switch. I also drilled a hole in the
side for the lighter socket. Unfortunately I had a big chunk torn out
between the two holes when the 15/16" drill grabbed, so I had to glue
that back. These items are on the side rather than the bottom so that
water and crap won't get into them, and so that they don't hang down
into the trunk where they could get caught on things.

I found a male pin to match the kickdown switch connector and soldered
it onto one of the fore/aft wires, and plugged it into the correct pin
on the connector and taped it up. I checked with a meter, and that
pin is indeed hot only when the motor is actually running.

The defogger relay circuit uses two PNP transistors, five diodes, two
capacitors (one big), seven resistors, and one relay. I made a
schematic

of the relay, for future reference, in Illustrator, PostScript, PDF, &
GIF formats. (http://cathey.dogear.com/mb190d.html) In operation, Q1
is 'virtually' on all the time, which means the relay will actuate when
its positive coil lead is powered. Q1 is deenergized by the base
being dragged high, either by the Stop input going high or by the
action of Q2 when it times out. C1, the timing capacitor, is charged
through D2 when the relay is off. The voltage on C1 begins to decay
through R7 once the relay is energized, once it sags to a point that
turns Q2 on (a little below 5V, set by R3 & R4), Q2 drags the base
of Q1 high, turning off the relay. D1 holds the relay coil on during
the timed cycle, and also supplies power to the light in the dashboard
switch.

I installed a 2200 uF 25V capacitor (from the junk box) in
parallel with the existing 1000 uF 16V timing capacitor (C1)
inside the relay. The time delay worked out to be 40 minutes. I then
reexamined the schematic of the defroster relay, and discovered a
problem. Because the relay backdrives its own Start (E) input through
a diode (D1) from its output (87) in order to light the light in the
switch, my original plan to just short the output to +12V via the
'Solar' switch for the solar charging panel is no good: if you do that
the relay energizes, and stays that way. Unfortunately I have already
cut the hole for the switch, it's not particularly a standard size,
and it's only SPST. I need to do some more thinking. Can the relay
be modified internally to isolate its output terminal from the E
input? A series diode would do it, but it'd need to be a very hefty
one, and it would cause a voltage drop to the load.

With the relay assembled the time ran long. Really long. Three hours
in fact. Apart again it ran 40 minutes, I think the extra capacitor

Tom,
The idea is to get more money out of suckers that don't have a clue. They
gamble on the fact that most people that are replacing their own brake parts
will sell or junk the car well before the pads could need replacement.
Therefore they get the big money for the lifetime pads when the 1yr.
warranty pads would have done the job. Lifetime isn't for the life of the
car, but the owner. AND only to the original purchaser. What a scam.

Re: [MBZ] leakly hydraulic hose and JB weld etc.

2006-08-10 Thread Jim Cathey

replacement high pressure hose hose.

Take the hose to your local hydraulic hose shop, they should be
able to put on new rubber while you wait.

[MBZ] leakly hydraulic hose and JB weld etc.

2006-08-10 Thread John M McIntosh
Last weekend I was checking under hood and noticed on the 83 300TDt
the fabric coated feed hose to the hydraulic pump was all covered in
oil plus of course much of the front of the engine block. Now I had
assumed that the hose was weeping since it's 23 years old, I had that
issue with the 90's wagon, so I ordered a replacement which arrived
today. However just to crosscheck I wrapped both the old hose and the
high pressure hose in plastic wrap and confirmed it's really the high
pressure hose that has a pin hole leak in it.

Alas it will take a few days to a week to procure any sort of
replacement high pressure hose hose. So I'm wonder if I can attack
the issue with JB weld and aluminum tape or something to gain a few
days of drivability, or will I have to park it until I can get a
replacement hose from somewhere, so thoughts on this are welcome.

I'll get to replace both hoses (I hope), plus the filter and the
fluid on the weekend or next , or should I say the teenager about
here will do that work.

Re: [MBZ] OT Caravan brakes

Got around to changing the pads on the van tonight. It went exactly as OK
Don said. After I got over my rant about having to pull the caliper just
to change the pads, it was pretty simple. About an hour start to finish,
including getting out the jack and rattle wrench and putting everything
away. Probably would have been 5 min faster if it was not dark for the
second wheel.

Still, the system seems pretty flimsy when compared with the ATE brakes I
am used to. 2 little 8mm bolts hold the caliper on. Not as substantial as
the 12 mm ones on the MBs. Some brain put metallic shoes on the rear. Any
time the van sits for more than 24 hours, the shoes rust to the
drums. After it sat for a month or so I had to take the tires off and
whack the drums several times to get the shoes loose. Usually you can back
a ways and the shoes will let go. Not that time. Another reason I like
cheap pads and shoes that don't wear the drums and rotors; they don't rust
to the drum or rotor! (MB content: cheap pads will let your rotors live
longer)

Assuming that it's the same as our '97, here's what I did (and the
Haynes manual prescribes):

1- Use a c-clamp to press the piston back into the bore - after
removing some fluid from the reservoir. The caliper is a single
piston, floating type - it scoots on the two mounting bolts to sqeeze
the disk.

2 - Remove the two bolts holding the caliper on the steering knuckle.
They have bellows type rubber sleeves over the extended shafts.

3 - Slip the caliper off the disk. Remove the old pads.

4 - Suspend the caliper from the spring with a piece of wire. Remove
bushings and boots that the mounting bolts go through - inspect,
clean, and lubricate the bushings with multi-purpose grease, and
re-assemble.

5 - Apply anti-squeal compound to the back of the new pads. Install
the inner pad first, making sure that the retaining spring is fully
seated. Ditto for the outer pad.

6 - Install the caliper assembly, torque the bolts to 30 ft.lbs.
Install wheel, torque the lug bolts to 100 ft.lbs.

7 - Pump the brakes several time to seat the pads, fill the brake
fluid reservoir. Carefully test the operation of the brakes.

Re: [MBZ] Glow Cycle When Aux Fan is On

Something I noticed yesterday...when the engine is at temperature (remember the whole heat-soaked inferno garage thing) and I switch the key to the glow position, the fan starts instantly and the glow light comes on for a second or two then, instead of going out quickly it kind of fades out like its on a dimmer or something. Then the car starts normally. It only does this when the aux fan is running.
Is this okay?

Never heard of that. I could imagine that a loose engine ground MIGHT
generate some strange things, but I've never seen any commonality
between the aux fan and the glow plug circuit.

I've always thought the old International Harvester trucks, the ones
from the late 60s/early 70s, had really nice lines while still looking
"like a truck." Here's a pretty good picture of one, although it's been
repainted:
http://www.stinkypigs.com/FarmHouse/Truck/DSC_0012.jpg
The last one I saw in person was red with a silver grille and headlight
surrounds. It looked really sharp. The wrap-around windshield and
center-hinged hood give it a classic look.

The Element only looks useful, though. Look at the specs. My Honda Civic
Si had a larger payload capacity!

That's pretty much it. The oil separation in those engines is very
primitive, so when the rings get bad enough they'll run away on the oil
mist in the blowby. It dumps from the valve cover directly into the
intake runners on most models.

Re: [MBZ] Loan me a Car

2006-08-10 Thread Trampas
Depends on where you get the OM617. If the engine comes from a W123 you will
need to change the oil filter housing, oil cooler hoses, motor mount arms.
Of course you will have to change the transmission, and adjust drive shaft
as needed.

Then you will have to install Glow plug relay system and hook up all the
electronics including tachometer amplifier. Also ignition switch for the
vacuum cut off. Additionally instrument cluster depending on if you want
glow plug light.

Also you will need to change the fuel outlet from gas tank and remove
electric fuel pump.
