[MBZ] Wheel Balancing

2006-11-13 Thread John Peterson
What experience are you having with wheel balancing- I brought my 300D
in for snow tires and they put 4 Dunlop Graspics on the car. The car,
in nice weather, has Goodyear Triple Treads. When the Goodyears were on
the car, there was absolutely NO vibration in the steering wheel. With
the Graspics, it is notible at 45 MPH and annoying at 60 MPH.

The Goodyears were balanced by the MB dealership and the Graspics by a
tire warehouse.

Anyone had experience with this- the Graspics are snow tires- should I
expect vibration?

[MBZ] SDL clogged radiator update

2006-11-13 Thread Luther
Ran some water through the block, both normal flow and reverse flow and it had
no flecks of orange/red like the radiator. So, I reinstalled the radiator,
filled it up with water and drove it for about 15 minutes. I had to work to
get the car to reach 60c. When I parked it back at the house, I pulled out the
laser thermometer and took temps of the radiator. Here are the temps in C.

I actually looked it up in a Whitworth table. 1 W is 1.670, 1 1/8 is 1.860,
so it looks like the choices you gave are better. The acceptable measure across
the flats for a 1 1/8 Whitworth bolt is 1.815 to 1.860, so there's considerable
leeway on large fasteners, I doubt .01 loose is a problem.

I haven't tried Graspics, but on any other tire incuding Blizzaks, you only
get vibration when something is off balance. Usually when a weight falls

the summer tires. If the vibration goes away, put one of the winter

Re: [MBZ] Wheel Balancing

2006-11-13 Thread J.B. Hebert
I didn't have any problem balancing my Graspics. It all boils down
to the equipment and user experience. The tire warehouse guys
_should_ be using decent equipment and know how to use it well, since
they do such a high volume, but that isn't always the case. They
will frequently use the cheapest labor they can find, at a high
turnover rate. I've gotten so fed up with tire shop experiences that
I ultimately bought my own equipment to mount and balance my own
tires. It paid for itself in less than a year with the volume I do
(would have been quicker had I gotten the equipment before a tire
place destroyed a $450 rim).

Ultimately, if you are unhappy with the tires and the place you
bought them from is the same place that mounted and balanced them,
they should be willing to figure out what the problem is. Are you
using the same rims that your Goodyears were on? If not, you may
have a bad rim that is causing the problem.

the summer tires. If the vibration goes away, put one of the winter

on the back. Shouldn't take too long to figure out which tire(s) cause
the problem. The above assumes that your summer tires are still on

Thanks for all the input. They are mounted on the same rims the
Goodyears were on.

I should say that when I bought the Goodyears, the original installer
couldn't get it right- they always vibrated. But when the car was at
the MB dealership for something else, I asked them to balance them,
which they did, free of charge. Guess what? They solved it.

I'm thinking that I need to bring it to the MB dealership- the tire
stores might not have the quality of employee willing to do it correctly.

Being balanced, they could still be out of round, and the vibration could
actually be more severe at 45 than 65.

First thing I would do is look to see if they mounted the tires with the
colored dot aligned with the wheel's tire valve. This is supposed to get the
heaviest part of the tire opposite the heaviest part of the wheel. If they
didn't do that, you got a rookie tire person, and a bad supervisor. Along
with
this, I would not accept a balanced wheel with more than 2 ounces of weights
on it. Either get another tire or move the tire on the wheel to a position
that requires less weights

The road force balancing method is supposed one of the best methods but
will cost you about $70 at say Discount Tire.

I change the filters whenever they become restricted. That is seldom

Re: [MBZ] 300D radio on off problem

2006-11-13 Thread Rich Thomas
It is really simple to get at, pull out the ashtray, knobs, and it sorta
becomes obvious (there are a couple of plates with screws that hold the
unit in the mount). The wires are not very substantial, probably wore
off some insulation or the connector is loose. If you get in there, it
is probably worth throwing in a new unit (even a cheap one will be
infinitely better than the original), with CD player, aux inputs, 4 spkr
wires to bypass the fader, new power wire, etc, and some new speakers.
It is a DIN mount, so a new unit slides right in. This is not a hard or
time-consuming job, few tools reqd, and I think you would really enjoy
the results. Keep the old unit if you ever want a period piece back in
the car.

0-60 acceleration time increases, top speed decreases, fuel consumption
USUALLY increases (doesn't seem logical does it?) and you have shift
sooner to get up hills. If changing the filter remedies all the
problems, then you had a clogged filter.

They can slowly reduce in power overtime, or reduce suddenly. I have had
several diesels get massive increases in power after filter changes, when
I had never realized they were slowing down. Usually you will notice a
serious reduction, and difficulty climbing even mild grades. I always
carry spare filters, and the tools to change them when driving any diesel
vehicle anywhere. If you are in doubt, change them now and stop worrying
about it. It's easy and cheap to do, and then you can keep around the old
filters that still flow as emergency spares!
