And as far as the Japanese version is concerned, although it may be region

It wasn't a stampede at all. It was pretty well organized, with a list and
an hourly roll call. The Best Buy I've been camping at since Tuesday
afternoon was guaranteed at least 26 total and ended up with 34; 25 of
 which
were the premium 60GB editions. In retrospect, it was well worth enduring
the pouring rain and extreme cold.

Anyone seriously interested please contact me off-list. I have 3 60GB and
 2
20GB, ready to ship. All of them include the unreleased Talladega Nights
 DVD
in the new Blu-Ray format for true 1080p resolution. You can see for
yourselves what these are currently going for on eBay.

Keep in mind that most of the Playstation consoles currently on eBay
 aren't
even actual consoles. Most people are simply selling their pre-sale
 tickets;
60% of which have no Playstation to back the ticket. All of the Gamespot
participating stores (e.g. EB Games) which did pre-orders received a lot
less than originally expected. Thus, many of the pre-sale tickets being
 sold
on eBay for around $4,000 are simply rain checks for units being released
 well into 1st quarter 2007.

 $5,000 and it's yours.

Why not wait till next year when they are a couple hundred? All these game
consoles drop 70% in cost and then become obsolete. Will you really have

[MBZ] Creaky Chasis

2006-11-18 Thread John Peterson

Hello Friends!

To add to my list of recent noises and annoyances with my 300D, it is
now creaking when the car rolls to the left or right when on a curve
or starting out and turning the wheel sharply.
Any test to find the culprit? It doesn't do it if the car is parked, of
course. I have no lift, but is there anything I can check?

It is a 1991 300D 2.5 with 84k.

I guess a year of Rhode Island rhodes did the rubber in.

You likely need new links and subframe mounts in the rear as well.

Re: [MBZ] Creaky Chasis

2006-11-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Depends -- have an alignment shop check the lower control arm bushings.
If they are bad, it's cheaper to replace the lower control arm
complete -- it comes with a new ball joint. If they are good, the ball
joint presses out easily (the Harbor Freight tool and some spacers).
They are directional -- there is a notch in the base, it must point
toward the centerline of the car.

Note that turning the wheels makes the bad ball joint squeal. If you
are getting a creak from the REAR on body roll, you need to replace the
thrust and torque links back there -- will also cause excessive noise
under the rear seat and torque steer.

Sounds like either the road is crowned (higher in the center) or
the alignment has more caster on one side than the other. Tires and
brakes are possible too. I forget, does the steering gearbox have a
self-centering tendency? Is so, and if it isn't centered when you are
going straight, it will want to find its natural center. Did this start
happening after it was aligned? There is a screw in the gearbox that
the mechanic is supposed to remove and replace with a longer, pointed
screw to lock the gearbox in its center position while the wheels are
aligned. Mechanics in the USA get this part wrong a lot of the time,
I'm not sure if they do it better in Pakistan.

Mitch Thanks for the input.
We drive on the left side of the road. Wherever the roads
are crowned the car does stay straight otherwise it drifts off to the
right rapidly, like on the level motorways.
swapping tires L to R made no difference.
As you have mentioned I will recheck the centering of the steering box +
alignment using the special pin made.
The alignment shop is keen to assist, failing this I will try the main
Mercedes agents.
Thanks

Well, on the face of it _isn't_ in alignment. Try swapping the

 Mitch.

For WOT.

Linkage won't result in too low idle if the idle screw is properly set
(but CAN result in too high idle). OM617.95 engine idle is adjusted with
the idle screw and all other adjustments should allow that.

Definitely cross rotate the front tires. I have found that the tires will
take a set and wear just enough to make the car pull to the right. Cross

Now someone will no doubt chime in and say that you shouldn't cross rotate

While in theory cross rotating modern radial tires should cause no
problems, that's NOT true if anything else is wrong and if you don't do
it quite frequently. DON'T do it with older tires and if the belts have
started to slip (will usually happen after ~7.5-10kmi) or you have made
a really SERIOUS panic stop or two.

Re: [MBZ] pulling to the righ t 126

2006-11-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Check the upper control arm ball joint for play -- if it's bad, the
tire will lean, causing the camber to be off. This will cause the car
to drift, and the upper ball joint goes first. It's easy to replace.
The lowers should be checked as well, along with condition of the lower
control arm bushings. Nothing is adjustable here, if the caster or
camber is off, something has to be replaced.

You should also check the brake support rod aka track rod inner
bushing up on the firewall. If this is bad, not only does it groan on
large bumps (speed bumps and the like) or thump when shifting into
reverse with the brakes on, but will allow the control arm to move back
under pressure. this causes the tire to lead out.

Finally, verify that you have good tie rod ends, drag link ends, idler
arm bushing (there should be NO up and down movement on the idler arm)
and a good steering damper.

Then it ISN'T in proper alignment (even if someone seat it to spec under
static condions). Usually something is bent or worn. Also usually
someone set the alignment without using the spreader bar and/or without
checking the wear on every steering and suspension element (you can't
align a car when any part of the system is worn beyond the allowed
tolerance, but few except experienced Mercedes technicians know what
elements are most critical). Occasionally a bad tire CAN cause the
problem and repalcing that tire MIGHT correct the problem.

As someone pointed out earlier, a dragging brake can also cause a pull
to one side or the other. Either a stuck piston or a swelling flexible
brake line can be the cause. A disk or brake that is hotter on the
right side of the car is your clue.
