Re: [MBZ] Playstation
Why not wait till next year when they are a couple hundred? All these game consoles drop 70% in cost and then become obsolete. Will you really have fond memories a decade from now from having a PS3 in 2006 vs 2007? Here I am defending nice MB's that cost $5k that some folks think is overspending- To lose money on new car depreciation is one thing, this is just insane. When status overides sense this bad, there is something wrong. I mean, free market is free market, I don't want to limit it. If anyone buys one of these at 1000% mark-up, it's sad they are so stupid with their money, and kinda sleazy to take advantage of them. I'm surprised any outcry took this long... It's a matter of priorities though, the most expensive car is supposed to be the $10,000,000 Bugatti Royale, a fractional bargain comapared to many, many fine paintings you can't drive, take folks for rides in, touch, tinker with, and I couldn't give half a rat's butt about. [MBZ] Creaky Chasis
Hello Friends! To add to my list of recent noises and annoyances with my 300D, it is now creaking when the car rolls to the left or right when on a curve or starting out and turning the wheel sharply. Any test to find the culprit? It doesn't do it if the car is parked, of course. I have no lift, but is there anything I can check? It is a 1991 300D 2.5 with 84k. Re: [MBZ] Creaky Chasis
Depends -- have an alignment shop check the lower control arm bushings. If they are bad, it's cheaper to replace the lower control arm complete -- it comes with a new ball joint. If they are good, the ball joint presses out easily (the Harbor Freight tool and some spacers). They are directional -- there is a notch in the base, it must point toward the centerline of the car. Note that turning the wheels makes the bad ball joint squeal. If you are getting a creak from the REAR on body roll, you need to replace the thrust and torque links back there -- will also cause excessive noise under the rear seat and torque steer. Peter

Re: [MBZ] pulling to the righ t 126
Mak, Definitely cross rotate the front tires. I have found that the tires will take a set and wear just enough to make the car pull to the right. Cross Rotating at every oil change, 4 to 6K, is the answer. Now someone will no doubt chime in and say that you shouldn't cross rotate radial tires. This hasn't been true for about 10 years, unless you have unidirectionals with the arrows on the side. Regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 146 K miles

Re: [MBZ] Radiator Leaks
Copper brass rad, probably the solder is gone, time for a rod out and re-solder. Plastic/aluminum, time for a new one. Copper/brass radiators are available for W123 chassis cars, you may want to get one. Peter

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Mak, Definitely cross rotate the front tires. While in theory cross rotating modern radial tires should cause no problems, that's NOT true if anything else is wrong and if you don't do it quite frequently. DON'T do it with older tires and if the belts have started to slip (will usually happen after ~7.5-10kmi) or you have made a really SERIOUS panic stop or two. Re: [MBZ] pulling to the righ t 126
Check the upper control arm ball joint for play -- if it's bad, the tire will lean, causing the camber to be off. This will cause the car to drift, and the upper ball joint goes first. It's easy to replace. The lowers should be checked as well, along with condition of the lower control arm bushings. Nothing is adjustable here, if the caster or camber is off, something has to be replaced. You should also check the brake support rod aka track rod inner bushing up on the firewall. If this is bad, not only does it groan on large bumps (speed bumps and the like) or thump when shifting into reverse with the brakes on, but will allow the control arm to move back under pressure. this causes the tire to lead out. Finally, verify that you have good tie rod ends, drag link ends, idler arm bushing (there should be NO up and down movement on the idler arm) and a good steering damper. Peter

Then it ISN'T in proper alignment (even if someone seat it to spec under static condions). Usually something is bent or worn. Also usually someone set the alignment without using the spreader bar and/or without checking the wear on every steering and suspension element (you can't align a car when any part of the system is worn beyond the allowed tolerance, but few except experienced Mercedes technicians know what elements are most critical). Occasionally a bad tire CAN cause the problem and repalcing that tire MIGHT correct the problem. Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) Re: [MBZ] pulling to the righ t 126
A slight drag to one side can very easily be a tire, but swapping it side to side will cause the pull to switch, too. Usually happens because the belts are coming loose and the tire is bigger on one side than the other at speed --- a hint that new tires are required. I've had this happen -- when I replaced the tires due to excessive wear on one side of the tread, the problem (and the wear) vanished Peter

Perhaps he means 1979? Sometimes I think I'd like a 1972 300SD, the W108 chassis is kinda classy. Not taking on any more projects until I have a real garage, and my project 190D intercooled is roadworthy. I let 2006 go by without building that car, I had most of the pieces back in January.
