[MBZ] For all the Flyers on both MB lists...!

2006-12-26 Thread Curt Raymond

Sure, anybody with a $500 PC and a piece of $500 software could do all that too.
The tricky bit for them would be the film matchback. If it was all on video
thats, as we say wicked easy.

I work for Avid, we make the stuff that makes the movies.

Greetings all ...

What with all the discussion about Apple vis-a-vis PC's, I took a
look at some of the stuff on the Apple website and came across this.

It's a movie about flying- OneSixRight.. The
producer made it using off the shelf Mac/Apple stuff.. But,
that's not important

I am soon to be parting with a state issued license plate on my 1991
cherokee (It is taking on water every time it rains and the engine is long
in the tooth from the sounds of it, and I just don't have the time for a
project jeep... so its keep the 1985 300d or the 1991 jeep so... out
with the jeep :( :( ... anyhow, the plate is (maryland) M272727 (I kid
you not, and it was state issued).. so by the end of January, I will be MB

Hi Dwight,
My mistake - here's the eBay no. 160064882475 - I was under the
impression it was a newer 320CLK - but you're right - it appears to be a
W124 Coupe - I think it's the tail end of the W124 line - all the bugs are
hopefully worked out - although IMHO, there were few bugs to begin with. In

which case I'm even more inclined to recommend he seriouly consider it -
it's in very good condition has low miles - which is the reason for the
premium price.

I'm not hearing any problem areas - either there aren';t any or
everone's eating Christmas turkey ham or opening and playing with gifts.

And to all a good niight -- on dasher and dancer comet
blitzen, on 240D's and 300D's and a Maybach in the leadwith a 300D
Turbo bringing up the rear --- it's another Magic Night celebrating the
birth of Christ -
;-)

Re: [MBZ] [OT] dental surgery (was: 190D pics)

2006-12-26 Thread Zoltan Finks

Merry Christmas all! I've been wondering if there were any responses on this
post, but haven't had access to computer (at the in-laws house in IN for a
few days).

Man, very interesting stuff - I feel much better about my rather benign
problem of a couple lower wisdom teeth.

I'd like to respond to some of the responses on teeth - please read if
interested:

*David wrote: Is there any reason why pulling them now would be better than
doing it later?* (snip)

David, I've been told that the roots can continue to grow longer, and thus
closer to problem areas like the nerve that runs around the jawline. Or in
the case of uppers, get closer to the sinuses. (I'm just dealing with two
lower).

*David wrote*: *I don't remember anything from the time they put
the IV in until I was getting out my credit card to pay for the
procedure* (snip)

Same here. I was not told that I'd be drugged in that manner. I thought I'd
be perfectly aware, just numb. I woke up sort of knowing the procedure was
done (probably because they told me so) and it took numerous minutes and
hours before it began to set in that some time had passed.

*Curt wrote: Why are the lower ones more risky? The upper ones can allow a
hole into your sinuses which is no fun.
A friend of mine had that and was laid up for a week or two over it.
I had 4 pulled when I was 21, no impaction to speak of. I could have driven
home except we had to stop so I could throw up.
They gave me all 4 teeth in a little baggie.
*
Curt, I know the upper ones can get into the sinuses, but I thought that the
risk of the lower roots getting onto or around the lower jaw area risked
permanent numbness, and I wonder, maybe worse (like paralysis, i.e. drooping
lip, etc.). My dentists says that the latter stuff doesn't happen. I've also
heard horror stories of broken jaws. My surgeon at the said he had not
broken a jaw in several years. And yes, I wish I'd gotten my teeth returned
to me when I had the uppers taken out, but they just disposed of them
without asking me.

*Waylon wrote: A wisdom tooth without an opposing tooth WILL become erupted.
Just had upper roots and lower wisdom CUT out. Upper broke, lower would not
stop growing. I turn 38 in January. NEVER had a problem until recently.*
**
Yes, I've heard this - that if an upper is taken out, the lower should too
because and vice versa, because the remaining tooth will have nothing to
grind against when jaw closed. But I don't understand why, if the upper and
lower tooth were not touching eachother upon jaw closure, it matters that
one was removed and the other remains. And what do you mean you never had a
problem until recently? Do you mean you are having trouble after surgery? Or
do you mean you had trouble recently, and this is why you had surgery?

Thanks,
Brian

As a graphic artist who started out in the early nineties, I'm a fan of

On the other hand, all I've had access to in recent years (aside from at

decade or so, in that I can now do most modest graphic arts tasks on a
regular home PC.

The thing that I'm intrigued by, as we are now looking for another home
computer that I can also do graphic design work on, is the supposed vastly
superior tech. support available through Apple. Not to step on any toes out
there, but I really hate dealing with tech support guys - they usually sport
such a I know stuff you don't and I have the answers you need, so I don't
have to be nice to you, (and I don't get out into the open air much and thus

Supposedly, and confirmed by Chuck, a call/email/visit to the Apple store
can net us interaction with fluent English speakers with good social skills

replace the motherboard. They were all used lots, and never a failure, lost

further problems, I was just more careful where I set it after that. :-)
Not sure what the current ones are like.

Why is it that you never used to see the digits 666 on a license plate, but

One of my dad's friends had a 1976 T-Bird with the original CA plate 666

MAJOR accident which still left it driveable although it slowly deteriorated
electrically and mechanically after that.

oil that's so thick it builds pressure until the oil is good and
hot.

Whenever I've gone to the Apple store, I've been the worst customer possible
(no appointment, looking for parts they don't have, etc), and they've been
infinitely polite, knowledgeable, and helpful.

As for reliability, I've had 4 mac laptops (b/c I get tired of them and go
through them like I do cars) and none has had any problems that needed
repair. My one issue with my 12 powerbook was that one of the rubber feet
fell off and I couldn't find it. Even after I dropped it off my bed and
bent the power cord prong, after bending it back into shape it was as if
nothing happened. Durable AND good looking.

further problems, I was just more careful where I set it after that. :-)
Not sure what the current ones are like.

Low oil pressure after it gets up to operating temps? #1 cause is bad main

How low? Is it above 1 BAR? If so then it is not low.

Another cause for low oil pressure is using a Fram oil filter. Fram uses 2
paper elements instead of a paper on the top section a mat element on the
bottom section. The lower mat element is the bypass filter with an
incorrectly manufactured filter, too much oil will pass through the bypass,
dropping your oil pressure.

Re: [MBZ] Apple

2006-12-26 Thread OK Don

First, it's hard to separate dispassionate analysis from religious
fever in any PC vs. Mac discussion. My bias is towards PCs. My
favorite quote on the question is A Mac is like a bicycle with
training wheels that you can't take off. This dates from the DOS 3
era. There are those of us (mostly Linux users now) who like to fiddle
with the innards of their PCs, knowingly trading stability for
experimentation.
There are a LOT of variables that effect PC stability - from the
quality of the hardware to the software to the user. I have users who
regularly destroy PCs, and those that regularly destroy Macs. I will
say that Apple is not going to sell you a hard drive or memory chip
from the bottom of the barrel, which many PC manufactures will - and
you really run into with white box or DIYS PCs where price is the
deciding criteria when choosing parts. I buy the cheapest parts I can
find, but don't expect them to be the pinnacle of reliability. I
maintain them my self, and just deal with it when a drive gets
corruption or dies.
If you install every piece of shareware someone tells you about, you
can expect an un-stable Windows OS. If you only use mainstream
software, and don't constantly remove and re-install versions, etc.,
you can expect Windows to be stable, at least from NT workstation and
XP on.

We only got Macs for our graphics folk when they started printing
directly to color presses - color management on a Macs was light years
ahead of PCs at the time - about seven years ago. One of the graphic
artists is constantly crashing his Mac and having to re-load it. He's
the Mac guru of the shop - go figure.

I've never used consumer support, so have no idea what you'll get from
any of them. The State (OK) just standardized on Dell PC's, and I can
tell you that, so far, HP commercial support beats Dell's hands down.
I think that you'll get comparable hardware quality from the
commercial versions of PCs from IBM, HP, etc., and from Apple. The
jury is still out on Dell. I doubt that you'll get that level of
quality from the consumer versions of PCs from anyone. I can tell you
that the mechanical difference between commercial models of Compaq
laptops and the one consumer Dell I have is like a Mercedes to a
Hyundai. You can read the vintage of the machines I'm talking about by
the use of Compaq instead of HP ---

I did drop tests on three models of laptops each from Dell and
Compaq once. I had demo units of the ultra-portable, two spindle mid
size, and desktop replacement commercial lines. I dropped them,
running, from waist high, onto a raised floor - 24 square tiles
suspended above concrete. only the largest Dell failed - the screen
cracked and was un-usable. The other five ran as if nothing had
happened. I attribute the failure of the Dell to the random angle and
corner it hit at - not a design deficiency. They all survived better
than I expected. note - this was about five years ago --- YMMV.

How often should these o-rings be replaced?
How do you clean out the hollow shaft? I use brake cleaner and compressed air.
Are you supposed to run a wire or cleaning brush through this shaft to keep it
clear or just rinse it out.

Re: [MBZ] Oil Filter Shaft and o-rings

2006-12-26 Thread Chuck Landenberger

Mike,

Not sure of the interval for replacing those o-rings, but not more
than 10K miles. However, personal experience says they can last over
100kmiles... Well, maybe not that much, but when I finally changed
them on my 300SD (Gone to new owner last June) they were very
brittle. Cut them off w/utility knife and they just popped.

Never cleaned the shaft in the 225kmiles (347kmiles total) I put on
the SD.! No evident problems resulted.

Happy New Year and take care,

Okay, so maybe I'm mistaken that the digits 666 have not been hisorically
allowed on license plates. Perhaps they're avoided? You'd think they'd show
up often enough for me to remember seeing it at least once (not counting
recently).

And no, I haven't just started thinking about it in recent years, so it's
not the you're thinking about it, so now you see it all the time
phenomenon.

Re: [MBZ] R-Class diesel

Son is considering a 07 R 320CDI?  Any words of wisdom?

What I know is that the magazine reviews of models using the 7G-Tronic
transmission have been universally enthusiastic about the trans.

I looked over my friend AC's new E320 Bluetec last week and was surprised to
hear no diesel noise with the hood closed. Opening the hood, there was a small
amount of combustion noise at a rock solid vibration free idle.

I've examined a few Rs and although it's looks don't thrill me, the quality
inside and out is impressive. Too bad the short wheelbase version isn't sold
here. The diesel version costs $1000 more than the gas version which must be
the
3.5 V-6. Where the 5.5 V-8 fits into this is unknown to me.

My dealer uses them as courtesy vans replacing a couple of MLs.

In my experience (been checking this for about 12 years now) the O
rings start to get hard after about 20,000-25,000 miles. How soon before
the oil pressure at idle drops (it will drop when the O rings are rock
hard) is not clear but it takes MORE than 25kmi. This seems a little
more critical in OM60x engines that have hydraulic lifters that can
start to clatter at idle when the O rings get really hard.

If you replace the filter stem O rings when you change transmission
fluid or fuel/air filters (about every 30kmi).

Don is right, its just not fair to compare any Mac to a $200 Wal-Mart PC.
Stack a Mac workstation up against an HP workstation machine and they're about
the same for quality.
Apple FINALLY made it practical to put multiple drives inside the computer's
case (important for video editors)
but they still ship with a stinkin single button mouse. How they can design
something as cool as their current mouse without having a second button baffles
and annoys me.

Otherwise I use Linux, except for my video editing machine which is Windows
based for my editing app because FCP left me up the river without a paddle with
hungry natives staring at me.

Hi Bob,
Once you experience a Turbo diesel you won't consder anything else. Not
sure how the newer MB diesels are (2000 and newer) but the W123 124 are
totally different with a turbo - the E Class introduced in 95 was initially
without a turbo a turbo was added in 98 IIRC.

Change them when they look damaged - don't remove them from the shaft at
every oil change as that will damage them - just examine them and if you see
cracks or other damage to them replace them - keep spares in your toolbox.
Changing them every 4th or 5th oil change won't hurt - they're pretty cheap
and are only damaged when the shaft is removed/installed.

The internal part of the shaft should be fine with the cleaning you are
doing - don't think wire is needed - especially if you change the oil
regularily - especially if using synthetic oil - you will always get black
oil out when you spray cleaner in it - that's the nature of oil used in a
diesel engine.
