Re: [MBZ] Euro lamps

Are these the fogs in the euro lite or the external round things?

Gump uses H-3 in her fogs. There is a write up on how to turn metal
duct tape into reflector on the MBCA site in the 114/115 section. I am
thinking about doing that with the shot reflectors in Gump. Cheaper
than resilvering.

as its reflector is toast and I have bumper-mount fogs too, but
I like everything to work. It looks like I could break off the

approximately the right place, but that would be no fun. (I've
done something similar to replace one of the dead R2 bulbs with
an H4.)

Anybody got any suggestions? Surfing the bulb supply sites
yielded nothing at all.

Interestingly, next to the 10086 fog lamp is an empty 4W bulb
socket. The car's harness doesn't supply power to it, however.

In the Euros, located approximately where the turn/park junk is on
the USDOT lamps. (Turns are on top, and park is handled by the city
light in the main reflector. The parking light socket in the fog
reflector is unused.) It uses R2 headlamps, which are hard to find.

I converted one to H4 by desoldering the old bulb's base and turning
it into an adapter flange. I plan to do the other one when it dies.
The converted lighting pattern is a little softer than before but
is still pretty good, and is brighter. And much easier to procure,
and is cheaper. I laid in a supply of liquidation H4's for $1 or
$2 each.

The external round fogs are on my 250C convertible, the heap got
Harbor Freight plastic cheapies that use H3. (To be 'upgraded' to
metal-bodied Blazers from a junkyard BMW next time they shatter.)

The heap's fog reflectors are nasty corroded yellow. I don't know of
any colored reflector material I could use. I've toyed with the idea
of gluing aluminum foil in there.

The moulding was made up of two pieces meeting at the B pillar w/

[MBZ] Any problem using 6 rims on 1987 300D turbo instead of the stock 6.5?

I purchased a set of rims with almost new tires for my 1987 300D. The seller
read the numbers back to me over the phone and because he couldn't read the
numbers clearly, he told me they were 6.5 instead of the actual 6 that they
are. The rest of the numbers all match, the only difference is the .5.
Will these work ok for the 300D? I would plan to use them with winter tires,
as, they are narrower than what I normally use for summer driving.

Any suggestions?

I think the old Chevy and a 300D would be pretty close to the same weight
empty..

As far as driving an underpowered dog of a truck I can tell you for sure
that the 240D engine would suck in a truck. My 78HP flathead gasser in the
M37 is OK rolling down the flat road but the slightest hill and you are
crawling carrying a load. A pickup NEEDS the extra power to be usefull. If
you are only concerned about economy leave the engine in the Benz.

I might be able to live with a very fuel efficient dog. My father at one
time had a 67 Ford pickup. It came with
a 352 cid V8 and he later swapped in a 240 cid inline 6, because he was
unhappy with the mileage. It was OK empty
but one had to slip the clutch a bit to get moving if it was loaded.
However, once moving down the highway it would
really cruise and was very good on gas. I never expressly checked but I
assume it had a pretty high rearend. I
suppose one might need to go the other way in terms of rear gear with a
small diesel but it sure would be nice to
have good mileage. It can't weigh much more than my 115 300D unless it was
 loaded up.

The wheels MAY not fit the front as they may not clear the brake
calipers. They will probably fit on the rear (I have a set of 6 wheels
that did fit on the rear of my 124). The wheels are probably from a 201
(190 series) car. As far as I know all the 124s came equipped with 6.5
or wider wheels and most 201s after 1984 came with 6 inch wheels (a few
sporty models came with wider wheels).

I would NOT recommend using those wheels on your car.

If they fit, and the offset is right, they will allow the use of
narrower snow tires. This, IMHO, is a good thing for a snow tire.
Just remind yourself to wait for the summer shoes before driving
as aggressively as normally you can!

That plan always worked well for my Camaro. Narrow studded snows and
a little weight in the rear transformed the car.

How's that car holding up? Sure was purty.

Yea probably. My wife is pretty understanding about my car fever.
When I used to work at a dealership, I had constant access to decent
wholesale cars. After the first few cars that I talked to my wife
about, she said I don't care if you buy another car as long as we don't
lose money and as long as you don't sell my car. In two years time, I
bought and sold 22 cars and a lot of fun doing it. I have been married
8 years and in that time, I have had at least 30 cars but my wife has
had three. I really enjoyed buying and selling those cars. I had to
slow it down and regulate it a little more. I got a letter from the
State Of Missouri that if I sold one more car in the calendar year, I
would have to get a dealer's license. Most of the cars I bought were
$1500-3000 that I could turn around and sell (after a little sweat
equity and minor repairs) for $2500-4500. It was fun.

The first car I bought (in order to fix it up and sell) was a 1982 Honda
Accord with 280,000 miles. I bought it for $200 and sold it for $600.
I also paid $700 for a 1982 300D with bad motor mounts, tight valves
(that wouldn't start without lots of coaxing). I fixed it up, cleaned
it up, and drove it for six months before selling it for $2000. The
buyer became a friend of mine and the car lasted to over 400K miles.

[MBZ] 85 300D Instrument cluster removal

2007-02-09 Thread Roger Conlon

Hello;
I plan to replace my tach and non working clock with a remanufactured unit I
bought.

Was wondering what it takes/how to remove the cluster.
Does it slide out with the coat hanger positioned on it's side like the 126
model does?
Also wondering what cables to expect behind it, is there one for the tach
and speedo?

Should I disconnect the cables for the battery?

Wow. Some pretty amazing tales. Guess I don't have as much to complain (to
myself) about as I thought.

I enjoy asking a woman who has just proclaimed that women can do anything
men can do if she can change a car tire. The cycling group I sometimes ride
in has some female lawyers and surgeons, etc. They can't fix a flat on
their bikes.

I think that some women are quite happy with this arrangement, but others
literally don't know how to do the task.

Speedo, oil pressure. Then a bunch of electrical connectors such as
the main cluster plug, the tach, the clock, and some indicator lights.
It's no big deal, once you've gotten it pulled out.

Should I disconnect the cables for the battery?

Some do, some don't. The worst you're likely to do is blow
the clock (unswitched) fuse if you don't.

Sure, each gender tends to play a role, and responsibilities are worked out
within the relationship. I take out the trash and she changes the sheets on
the bed. We never verbally worked this out. We each really cook for
ourselves, but I hate to tell you, she (wifey) shows more proclivity for
cooking, and I have none. If she finds herself cooking for me, she gets very
defensive, but she still finds herself doing it once in a while despite the
fact that I have NEVER asked her to do so. Gender differences is all I'm
sayin' - like it or not.

But I'm speaking to the ineptitude that women naturally have for
understanding the way mechanical things work. Yes, physical strength comes
into play, but setting that aside, the majority of women literally do not
know how to change a tire.

Fun stuff.

With a properly running Mercedes diesel and approved oil using low or
ultra low sulfur diesel fuel the problem isn't oil or additive breakdown
or the filter capacity but the soot load that collects (soot is NOT
filtered out - it's suspended in the oil and removed by changing the
oil). If proper filtering were to be introduced and maintained (may
require filter changes every few thousand miles or more often under bad
conditions), an extended change oil need not be changed for 50kmi or
more. This is NOT practical for most passenger cars and is NOT how
Mercedes choose to go.

Most OM60x engines in good condition that see at least half of their
mileage on the highway and don't see a LOT of harsh weather, soot rarely
becomes a problem in less than 7.5kmi and may not reach the limit for
15kmi. If largely city driven or driven in harsh weather conditions soot
levels may increase much more rapidly. The older OM61x engines seem to
generate more soot sooner, but I don't know if that's just because they
are older and have more wear or because they don't burn the fuel quite
as efficiently (they don't) and that generate more soot.

[MBZ] Stopped smoking

2007-02-09 Thread Billr

As some of you suggested back when I complained about my 300 SD smoking and
running rough at start up, the cure turned out to be new glow plugs. The
smoking continued to get worse until last Monday when it simply did not stop
even after 5 minutes. It did stop on the way to the shop, but I was having
visions of valve seal repairs. A quick scan with a temp sensor showed at
least one cylinder cooler than the others. On the theory that they all had
been in use for the same amount of time I just replaced them all. Not even
a hit of smoke [that shows in the mirrors] on start up, and smooth from the
start. I am happy.

On an almost related note, there is a 300TD at his shop that needs more
repairs that the college kid owner can afford. I am told that the engine
needs some major work, but the body looks good at a 30' look. I didn't look
at the interior. Anyone have interest if the kid decides to abandon it or
sell it cheap?

[MBZ] Black '85 300D update

2007-02-09 Thread kevin kraly
Well, Dad and I went out yesterday to take a look at it. before we got
there, the owner had started it up and turned it around in the driveway. He
left it idling for a couple minutes before it died. Since it had been
sitting for a few months, I tried the primer pump which he knew nothin'
about and proceeded to attempt a prime. A moderate amount of fuel gushed
out (old screw-in type), and I couldn't get the necessary 10psi behind it to
kick excess fuel past the squeaky sounding valve that routes it back to the
tank. It caught on three cyls, but not enough to get it to run. We tried a
little starting fluid which did very little. Next, we tried jumping it to
get a bit more cranking speed, but still no go. The owner left the charger
on it all night to get the battery up to the max. He just called me to
inform me that it still wouldn't start. Even if it starts which is
unlikely, the car is nothing special, pealing clearcoat, cracks in the
interior including dash cracking and major cracking in the top of the rear
seatback, missing dash wood trim, non-working radio, and hey, it's a
non-runner at present. It does have new tires on Bundts and a passenger's
side mirror, so it's worth at least $500. Believe it or not, the trunk is
DRY!

The 1985 300 CD is leaking fuel from the TOP of the main fuel filter
canister, right under the 19 mm (?) bolt that secures the filter. I can't
possibly tighten it any more. I wonder if there is a small metal gasket
that should be there belowe the head of the bolt - does anyone know? The
car is really nice so it offends me to smell the fuel aroma coming from
under the hood when the engine is purring away. :(

Re: [MBZ] 85 300D Instrument cluster removal

2007-02-09 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The best method is to push it from behind after disconnecting the speedo
cable, the problem with using coathangers is the potential to cause damage.
The cluster can be fairly tight in there and if you are going to push from
behind, place a towel in front of the cluster as you push it. Why? Because
it may come out with a rush and break of one of the little knobs on the
front. How do I know? Because I have not been able to set my clock since the
last time I removed the cluster.

But could you go a little deeper in the meaning of the unswitched fuse?
For the clock.
That is the reason behind taking out IC the tach/clock, the clock is non
functioning

is there a fuse to it? Bought a re-mfg tach/clock for $45.00.
