It's definately a W126 - big, long body wiith some cosmetic problems - and I

Since it's the 350 engine in a late body I would wondering if it was part of
the rod benders??

Or, did that not start until the W140 was introduced?

[MBZ] 7.0 litre AMG engine?

2007-04-13 Thread E M

I've always like the older (1998) CL coupes, based on the W140. I was
looking around the new and found an English spec CL 600 and it said it had
the optional 7.0 AMG engine. Did AMG ever offer a 7.0 litre V12 engine, or
was this an aftermarket job? I think AMG was already part owned by Mercedes
by that time.

the sunroof rails use a special grease from MB that does not hold dirt (much)
called Gleitungspaste (gliding paste/grease). You can get it from Rusty. Great
stuff. Clean off the old rails, wipe 'em clean and put of the g-paste and it's
a 100x better.

didn't know about MB antenna wipes. Do NOT use any lubricant on the antenna, it
will hold dirt and cause failure even sooner. Marshall says avg antenna life is
6 years. Since I'm in the city, I never need to put mine up, besides, I listen
to CD's all the time.

Appears not to turn waxy like white lithum does.

Access is difficult - Rusty has new ones - the cowling and windshield wiper
assy must be removed to replace the motor. They come with or without the

Re: [MBZ] 7.0 litre AMG engine?

2007-04-13 Thread LarryT
yes, AMG started with a stock 6.0L V12 and modified it ending up with 7.0L
along with a lot of other goodies.

As with all very expensive cars, maintaence can be troublesome and costly.
While MB will undoubtedly *say* they are qualified to work on them they may
be optimistic. In some cases, AMG will send a technician from Germany to
make repairs. Of course, this isn;t always the case, but taking it to
PepBoys will be problematic. IMHO.

Good luck -

I've always like the older (1998) CL coupes, based on the W140. I was
looking around the new and found an English spec CL 600 and it said it had
the optional 7.0 AMG engine. Did AMG ever offer a 7.0 litre V12 engine,
or
was this an aftermarket job? I think AMG was already part owned by
Mercedes

by that time.

Re: [MBZ] All around lube?

2007-04-13 Thread Loren Faeth
For any grease fittings (not much on 123 and later cars) I use
Molykote BR2 gun grease. It is a molybdenum disulfide grease. On
the door hinges, it works well, using the special fitting adapter
(available at most chain saw stores) I have used this for 30 some
years. It is a great product. the moly is a friction reducing
agent, which in turn extends the life of bearings. BR2 is good for
window regulators and door checks. You do need to be careful about
not getting BR2 on cloth/interior components. I only put Molykote
BR2 in my grease gun.

For light oil, M1 works pretty well. It does have detergents, so
will wash off in time.

For front wheel bearings, use the MB approved stuff, although I have
used the BR2 there also. it is a little weepy for that
application. On my 66 200D, I put BR2 on the wheel bearings 30 some
years ago, and have never re-greased them or had need to replace the bearings.

for the sunroof, buy the gleitpaste from Rusty. In a pinch, use the
BR2, because the gleitpaste is a moly grease. it appears to be a
little different than the BR2, but it is close.

DO NOT, under any situation, use white lithium if you intend to keep
a car more than a year or two. White lithium gets dry and hard. It
causes wear!

Molykote products are available form Motion Industries or other
industrial bearing supply houses.

Herr Doktor Booth will suggest using the MB approved products. Those
are good. I have no problem if you are able to get those products
easily. I developed my bad habits long before I learned of Dr.
Booth. My suggestions are from experience, and are NOT factory approved.

[MBZ] Glow Plug torque and knocking?

2007-04-13 Thread Zoltan Finks

Gunshy though I may be about asking basic questions anymore, I will try:

Let's say I don't have a torque wrench and want to know about how tight to
tighten glow plugs on my 2.4. Are we talking about as tight as a spark plug,
or does it need to be tighter owing to the high compression of the engine? I
have a history of stripping things out by overtightening, so I erred on the
light side.

Undertightening glow plugs could not lead to the nailing discussed
recently - could it? In other words, that pinging/knocking sound upon cold
startup?

Everyone seems brainwashed by the Consumer Reports people who consistently say
the Toyotas and Hondas are so much better. We currently have 2 Toyotas and 2

Pencil type plugs do NOT need to be tightened much. I won't look up
the spec, but i think it is about 25-30 ft-lb.

An old Kraut mechanic told me long ago that if you put yout thumb on
the box or open end of a wrench, and tighten it as much as you can
one-handed in that position, that is about 25 ft-lb. with a socket,
put your thumb on the rachet-head.

Even the loop type only need about 30 ft-lb.

Overtightening wither can result in nasty messes.

No, I can't translate that into NM. rant l could translate between
Mkg and ft-lb, but I have never found a conversion for NM. I am
still torqued at ISO for dropping a logical Mkg unit in favor of a
nonsensical NM unit. /rant
