Re: [MBZ] piano teacher 300TE sedan door panel
Agressive pre-teens are famous for ripping the arm rest off. These can be fixed. You see the arm rest is fasten to the panel by two plastic stubs which are melted like a rivet head, thus firmly afixing the armrest to the panel. Then hooks and the bolt at the upper end into the door steel frame provide the actual support. What can happen is the hooks break, and the plastic rivet heads break also so then the armrest comes loose from the panel. Solution is: a) buying a new $$ armrest and refitting, requires melting plastic stub. b) Using washers and screws to bind the arm rest to the panel using the shafts of the broken rivet heads. This might not work if the other hooks are broken. Or what the owner of my (no longer owned) 89 300TE did, use 2 1/2 inch wood screw and fasten armrest to panel thru the steel frame, narrowly missing glass by oh 1/8 of an inch. Needless to say this *hidden* feature made removal of the door panel an interesting all day exercise for me. The foam of the armrest was quite good at hiding the head of the screw. But after thought, resisting the use of a crowbar, I happen to notice the very slight slit in the mb tex and went digging. Re: [MBZ] OT: Hey LT Don: motorcycle oil
I started out with a 1966 Honda S65. No electric start but didn't need the battery to run. The only down side was that if one stalled it, the lights went out. I recall climbing a steep hill on a gravel road in the dark. I didn't shift down soon enough and it stalled. I was sitting in the middle of the hill in the dark, hoping no one would come over the crest of the hill and run me down before I got it started again and out of there. I also remember coming up a long hill with my mother on the back. I down shifted two gears instead of one and the front wheel went up and poor old mom fell off the back and scraped both of her knees. I would have been about 17 and she would have been about 37 then. She wasn't really disturbed by that and just climbed back on and off we went. She is 75 now and I think would still climb on the back if I still had a bike. My last one was a Goldwing and it was nice but I decided maybe I was risking a bit too much by riding it. My 76 300D has taken the place of the bike. My CB200 has one of those, works a treat if the battery can produce enough power to fire the plugs. Otherwise, it's run and push until the battery charges a bit. My CB650 is more modern, no kickstart pedal. I have bump started it, but not with a totally flat battery. At the Honda shop in the 1980's, my 18 year old apprentice owned a CB900F. He bump started it fairly often, I think he did it for fun. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] off line for this coming week.
Good plan except for the reference to "small". Get a "big" compressor and a "big" MIG welder. You will never have too much air and a 240V MIG will ultimately prove more useful than a 120V unit and the initial cost difference will not be as much as you will spend if you buy the small ones and then upgrade later. ( I will leave it to you to figure out how I know these things.) Car tinkering will be evenings only this week. 11:30 now and just came in from messing with the timing belt on the Sunbird. I'll play with the mixture on the 300E later in the week too. It's an old house as I said, with only a single garage, but I plan to upgrade the wiring and lights, and then redrywall it all. It's small, but a good "hobby" garage. I was even thinking to maybe get a small air compressor to run a few tools, and look around for a small MIG welder. I can't use one, but I keep thinking of all the little jobs, or even tools I could fab up if I have one. Take care everyone and play safe. See you next week. Re: [MBZ] It's now gone/replacement discussion
I let them keep it. If I could have had the time and patience, I would have removed the skid plate. As it was, I removed the Alpine and put the old Becker in the back seat, as the car stereo place told me it is a PITA to install the Becker back into the slot, as the wiring is weird. Someone else can deal with it. EM... I've heard nothing but good stories about the C-class sport models, especially the 4-cyl Kompressor models. If I could afford it, I'd look at the new 2008 C300 sport. We were even planning on picking one up in Germany to save some money and have fun with it on a trip to visit relatives. The earlier W203 cars had occasional issues with the 3.2L V-6 and its wiring harness. A place I've been buying our used cars from, has mentioned the new C-class models from 2002-on, are solid cars with very few issues. My mechanic has also said this. He loves these cars and believes them to be the best Benzes made since the W124 series. I would get another W124 car for my own, but the only one that interests me is the 500E and the gas mileage numbers are too low for me to deal with. I'd get another 300E, but we already have one. As it is, the Porsches I've been looking at (from afficianados' recommendations), all have great reputations... 1987-1989 911 coupe, 2004 Boxster, 1988-1989 944 turbo. I've been leaning towards the 944 turbo from 1988 or 1989 as my mechanic (who's seen it all in his shop over the years) says these are highly under-rated cars with great quality and reliability. Yes, you have to religiously change out the timing belt every 30k miles ($500-600). However, they have the improved pieces which make doing a clutch simpler and cheaper, have few issues with ball joints and (if it was well taken care of, which it will have been, with records... I'm picky) will be a great car for me to enjoy. The Boxsters had some issues with the engine until 2001, when they were finally fixed. The 2004 models have zero TSBs and great owner satisfaction ratings as well as mechanic ratings (at least, with mine). The 87-89 3.2 911 models had great engines with the G50 tranny and a hydraulic clutch. I love the style of the 911, and had even looked at the 993 (1995-1997), the last of the air-cooled 911s. Gorgeous styling, great interiors, lots of power, good mileage. However, they had a electrical problem which was probably fixed in most cars, but after looking at the prices, they are too expensive for me. The newer water-cooled versions are just as gorgeous, but they had the same issues with the engines as did the early Boxsters, as they share the same technology (design) of the engine and I sure cannot afford those woes or a post-2001 911. So, I'll probably go with the 88/89 944 turbo. Another version to investigate is the 968 of the early 90's... 3-liter 4's, but since they are basically the same engine as the 944, I am concerned about the stress on the block by pushing it to 3 liters. BTW, economy figures on the 944 turbos are quite acceptable, with many people reporting in the upper-20's on the open road and mid-20's in town. Spirited driving will reduce these, of course. Re: [MBZ] DONKED -- An Edumacashun
Thanks, teach. I have seen some and am amazed that they're legal. Much as I hate to say anything positive about the criminals and wannabe criminals that do this sort of thing, I agree that it's visually interesting. Reminds me of a Stomper toy - remember those? Disclaimer: Yes, I realize that as a punk kid who jacked up the rear end of his car with leaf spring shackles, and cruised around acting tough, I might have been considered a criminal wannabe by some too. But the whole pimp/gangsta vibe has much more to do with actual violence against innocent people. I wonder if these guys are confused as to why they can't take off quite as quickly as before they so dramatically lowered, numerically, their final drive ratio. [MBZ] off line for this coming week.
Hi Everyone, Just to let you know, I'll be off line all this coming week. Having the house rewired and I think it will take the best part of this week. So if I don't get right back to you, you know why. That, or I've burned the house down. hee hee. Car tinkering will be evenings only this week. Ed 300E
