I would not mind finding an 87 wagon. I guy I know will sell me his for
3k but its not quite as nice as yours. His as like 320k on it, new #22
head etc.

Nope, on a whim picked up an autotrader and saw an ad for it. Guy who
owned it was a horse trainer, and needed a pickup instead.

The other two are my '79 300SD (294k) and the 190D (204k) I bought off
of Kaleb. The SD has a cracked piston though... so its not being
driven outside of my driveway (it still runs!).

How's your wagon doing? IIRC, you found a factory hitch for it... do
you know where I might be able to find one as well?

Best PnP or bone yard in Seattle are the Pull a Part in Lynnwood
north of Seattle, and the other yard in Tacoma. Great prices and
usually a benz or two.

For newer models (last 25 years) try Aurora Auto Wrecking. Closer to
retail prices, but they have lots of newer iron.

Re: [MBZ] Water Pump

2007-05-17 Thread Stuart Saxonberg
Oh, I *know* where my coolant leak is. There's a pinhole near the top of the
radiator that I can't seem to get sealed - god knows I've tried.

It's so slow that I mostly just ignore it, but I obviously needed to check
it a little more often. Also, I thought it'd probably stop leaking once it
hit the level of the pinhole, but it didn't - probably because the system
under pressure doesn't quite work how I think.

Stuart S.

Peter Frederick said:

Ah, but the first sign of a failing water pump bearing is often coolant
leaking out the weep hole on the bottom. Do check that, and find the
coolant leak at any rate, it will only get worse otherwise

Problem 3: Since this aluminum

are
fully compressed so there's no way for these diaphrams to exert any

I believe these diaphragms are actually sized for the under-dash
HVAC pods, and don't really fit the door/trunk stuff at all. I also
have a set in a box somewhere that also did not fit where I wanted
them to.

I go with good used, if you can find them at the boneyard, or just
cough up the bucks to buy new. It really is nice when that system's
operating as it should.

Is it worth swapping out the black box?

Of course. Unless, of course, it's too expensive for a gamble.
It's the old song. You can use electrical test equipment to see
if it's getting good inputs, then you can see if it's generating
good outputs. Quite a bit more time-consuming than just swapping
in a known good unit. However, coming up with a known good unit
can be the hard part of doing it that way...

Fair enough. It's actually too new/expensive for us too, but we are just
exploring the options offered by some of these 40 mpg+ VWs. We are slowly
coming back to our senses and remembering that we really do enjoy being free
from car payments. Maybe a 5 - 7 yr. old model would be about an even trade
monetarily (in the current way-overinflated market of diesels) for our 2000
CRV.

Too bad the 190D 4 cyl. is so hard to find.

Thx, Jeff, but I already got mine. John is mulling that prospect, but
it's my possibly mistaken understanding that the MB factory hitches
weren't exported to GB. IIRC, there's a thriving market for aftermkt
hitches on Brit ebay. Shipping's probably a major hitch to bringing
any of those things over as they are pretty heavy, plus unless you've
got a contact on the ground near where you're buying from you've got
to convince a potential seller to jump thru the extra hoops involved

IMO you are much better off driving a car you can afford without
making payments, even if the fuel mileage is unremarkable or even low.
40 MPG *sounds* nice in light of current fuel prices, but if you do a
few calculations you may come to a different conclusion. Let's say
you'd actually achieve 40 MPG in a new TDI, and you paid $20,000 for
it (no idea -- maybe they're more or less, but bear with me). Assume
you drive 15,000 miles a year, and fuel is $3.50 a gallon:

(15000 / 40) * 3.50 = $1313 fuel costs for the year.

Now compare to let's say a diesel benz such as my 300D. I get about
23 MPG last time I checked:

(15000 / 23) * 3.50 = $2283 fuel costs for the year.

So I save $970 a year in fuel by driving the TDI. But I only paid
$3,000 for my 300D, a difference of $17,000. I'll have to drive that
TDI for over 17 years before I recoup that in savings on fuel.
Another way to look at it is that my $970 savings will be eaten up
by interest on the loan in just a few months. Meanwhile the value of
the car is depreciating rapidly.

There are a lot of *good* reasons to buy a brand new car, but I think
that doing it to get a car with better fuel mileage is not one of
them.

because they only want to dwell on the positives, no matter how
unimportant/irrelevant to value, e.g. Never been wrecked {as if this can be

never been on the ground, wire wheels, power brakes and steering

Re: [MBZ] I Almost Missed This....

2007-05-17 Thread LarryT

Howdy -
Actually, if someone could do the work themselves and wasn't buying it
to sell for a profit, it might not be too bad. I'd like to see some better
photos of the underside, rockers (no photos come close to the rockers)
because as we know, *rust* is the devil of these great cars.

I wasn't feeling like working on my 240D AC and had it basically rebuilt
for around $1000.

I would worry about the engine and trans on a car of this vintage unless
some diagnostics could be performed -

I guess you can tell, I'd love a late W123 turbo diesel wagon ;-) and
sweat equity is my speciality -

He does advertise it as a parts car.

It's a genuine money pit, starting with $2K needed to fix the AC and it
goes

downhill from there... This is no bargain.

I suppose it you are paying a shop to fix everything. If that is the
case, you really have no business owning a car like this in the first place.

Ah. Very good points to ponder guys.

Fair enough. It's actually too new/expensive for us too, but we are
just exploring the options offered by some of these 40 mpg+ VWs. We
are slowly coming back to our senses and remembering that we really
do enjoy being free from car payments.

There are a lot of *good* reasons to buy a brand new car, but I think
that doing it to get a car with better fuel mileage is not one of
them.

Re: [MBZ] 87 300TD Fixer

2007-05-17 Thread Rick Knoble

I thought about the ether possibility too. So would this 6 cylinder
be a rodbender ? Have wiring harness problems? Any other common
issues?

No rodbender. No wiring harness problems. Ac evap is a PITA to change. '87
300TD's are one of the Holy Grails of Mercedes dieseldom. It is the only
year diesel 124 wagons were imported. It is also the only year that
particular engine was imported in the 124 chassis. Very powerful.

OK so assume the head is trashed. I suppose a replacement could be
scavenged from somewhere -- how much $$? Can that piston be changed
out with the engine in the car? Would it be better to just try to
find a complete donor engine?
