When I went to fetch the car, I had spent three weeks screwing with
this monkey because he listed the car with paypal as an option, but
then closed the account after I told him I had begun the paypal
transaction. Gave him my particulars about arrival and such 48 hours
prior to getting to town. Got picked up two hours late and we drove
around Texas for another hour, so I was already off schedule for
departure for the return.

Once at his dirt lot store, the car was nowhere near road ready. He
had removed the functional IP and replaced it with a crap unit
because there was minor weeping from an internal O-ring. Unit I
ended up with was installed as bassackward as possible , it made no
power and spewed more smoke than a steam locomotive. Found that out
after he added two quarts of oil, had his yard monkeys run around
fetching four lug bolts he had borrowed for other cars, removed
garbage from the cabin and trunk, pumped up the tires, and filled the
radiator. All this after he already had the paypal cash.

The driver side seat back was missing. He had it at his house. I
was to follow him to get it. Driving there on a 90* morning, I find
the AC does not work, I chug along and nearly get killed at
intersections, and the tank is near empty. He wanted me to go back
to his shop and wait while his monkeys tried to fix the AC. NO
WAY, I got out of there as fast as I could. Found a diesel pump and
filled the tank. Got on the highway and headed north.

Had to add another quart of oil when I stopped to pee. Around OKC, I
started to lose power and found out the gallon jugs of ATF in the
trunk were not spare but were meant to be in the transmission.

All this on a Saturday night and no way to get the car to a dealer
and serviced in time to get back on the road. Granted I was a fool
for not getting PPI, but I did learn that you only lose a small bit
of your ebay rating when you walk away. Walking is really cheap and
easy. All you need to do is let eBay and all that it was not at listed.

We drove an Opel Manta that way for about two years, when it finally
let go and dumped the front end on the ground. My wife was not happy.
I kept squirting grease in to stop the noise, but it did finally have

My 300SDL was squeaking when I turned the wheel after a bit of
driving. I was sure it was the lower ball joint, but I replaced the
tie rod ends after the jack slipping into the oil pan incident, and
the squeaking noise is gone.

Screw stabil, its crap. Get some SeaFoam gas additive, that stuff is

The alternator on my CB900f is iffy sometimes too. In the rain it charges not

At some point it'll take a serious dump and I'll send the whole engine out for

Around here a bike under 750cc is considered a starter bike to ride
for a
year until you graduate to a real bike.
Thats crazy though. The 454 is plenty of bike to haul my 230# butt
around.

In 1980 I purchased a brand new Honda CB650. I still have it. I wanted
a
starter bike with plenty of power and one I wouldn't soon outgrow. I
looked at Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda. I have A 34 inch inseam
and
the Honda was the most comfortable. Although I now ride a HD
Geezer-Glide,
the Honda is still an enjoyable motorcycle. The only serious problems I
have
had are the carbs gumming up (shoulda used Stabil) and the alternator
(Hondas of this era are infamous for that).

 Dan,

what sort of riding do you want to do?

I find this to be the best determinant of what bike I get. Doing
dirt and trails, get one of those. Go fast rice riding is good for a
crotch rocket, but not good for more than an hour, or you get really
sore fast. Touring wants another bike. Just puttering around town
will be fine for most bikes of any size.

I tent to like the Beemers. They are built to last, hold value
better than a Benz and have not had quality issues. I really
enjoyed working on mine and could take it for long or short rides in
town or highway. I had a little R65 from 1981 with bikini fairing
(k75s shield) and full saddle bags so I could do the touring without
getting beat up. Corbin saddle for the rear to survive days on the
road. The bike has a 5 gallon tank to keep you on the road for 300
 miles before reserve.

Like our Benz, you do need to keep on top of the scheduled
maintenance. Better to figure out how yourself, since shop time is
expensive. There is a riders association with magazine and lots and
 lots of rallies.

I'm the poster boy for wrong first bike, an '82 CB900f is always saying I'm
gonna kill you every second of every ride.
Its not that the bike is scary but theres so much power available that you
could easily twist that throttle to oblivion.
But with the 454 its just cute and little and you don't take it seriously,
until you do something stupid and it bites you. I've had some VERY close calls
on the 454. I'm MUCH more careful on my CB because its always reminding me that
it wants to kill me.

You know where you stand with a big bike, like bikes are like dogs, all happy
and wagging their tail until it comes time...

Maybe look for an older CB750 or CB900 custom. The f like mine is a cafe racer,
all hunched over the tank. The custom is a standard but the 900 or 1000 is a
big frame bike, good for larger people. I'm 6', 30 inseam and I can just sit
my CB900, if I were any smaller I'd be too short.

The Virago is also a nice bike, slingback cruiser. They are known for some
charging issues but they're also easy to work on and more reliable than the
status symbol bikes.

Ego doesn't play into it - my ability to ride and
operate it safely come first.

If it was a n ego thing, I would be looking for a nice
used Harley. Since the wife worked for them when we
lived in Wisconsin, we had loaner bikes all the time.
Other than a short time in high school, I've never
ridden anything smaller than an 883.

Before I go out and lay down some serious coin for a
(nice) bike of my own, I want to be totally
comfortable in my abilities. I would prefer to do
that on something that I can ride for a year or two
and get rid of or hand down to my youngest.

I had an '85 Ford F350 crew cab 4spd manny with the Int'l/Navistar 6.9
Diesel. It had a hole in one of the sleves due to cavitation, but seemed to
run very well anyway although it used oil and blew coolant everywhere under
the hood. Luckily, it had already been rebuilt and was under warranty.
Once rebuilt ***again***, it never had any problems during the remaining 4
years of ownership. What did this one of yours need to get going? Did it
have problems starting and/or staying running? They come up for sale often

I don't really want to take the chance that such a catastrophic failure may
happen with the 300SD. Before it's driven anymore, I plan to at least jack
it up and check to see where the groaning noise is coming from. It doesn't
groan or creak when going over bumps, but I'm sure that it can be heard from
miles around while turning a corner or maneuvering into a parking space.

There are some things that don't add up to a well maintained car:

Tow hook cover is missing
Something is wrong with the exhaust. It is non-standard, and hangs too low.
The latch inside the drivers door appears to be broken and hanging down
The parcel net holders behind the seats do not match the seats.
Rust in the spare tire well
Claims to be a dealer, but has only 14 feed back on ebay
States that mileage is exempt from certification, because it is more
than 10 years old.

Looks like he had someone rub armorall all over everything

And that is just looking through quickly

Could be a 200 or 300k mile car that has had the odo messed with.

Now this leads me to ask: is such a catastrophe always preceeded by telltale
noises (the creaking we're talking about)? If not, it seems that many
drivers who have not done proper maintenance, or do not know what
maintenance that has been done, may be seconds away from this with no
warning. Yet you rarely see it.

A few years ago, My dad and I had a '79 Mercury Bobcat AKA Ford Pinto (don't
laugh!). It was a fine original car that needed a few minor things, but the
2.3L 4 cyl engine ran very well with 131Kmi on it. It needed shocks, but I
had no idea about the bad ball joints until we jacked it up. The grease
fittings were rusted as if the car had never been lubed, and the left front
wheel had noticeable play in it and could be moved up and down. We were
hauling a$$ down I5 the day before at light speed (for aBobcat anyway), and
there were no problems. It did have a slight shimmy at highway speeds that
felt like a tire out of balance, but other than that, there were no
symptoms, no groaning, no creaking, nada! We changed both ball joints on
each side as well as the guide rod and sweigh bar bushings.

Mileage exemption? In Ohio, there's an odometer certification on every
title, with boxes for in excess of mechanical limits and odometer has
been altered.

Everything I've seen lists the transmission modulator pressure at a
given speed, implying the car is moving. I've found that, at least for
the 722.315 in most of the early 80's turbos, that the pressure in
motion is within about 0.1 bar of the pressure at idle. What I do is
get the transmission good and warm (at least 20 minutes of driving),
run the car up on the ramps, set the modulator pressure, and then take
her for a test drive while still observing the pressures. It may or
may not require another quarter turn or so to nail it perfectly.

I happen to have a rather crude gauge sitting in the garage that
anyone is welcome to borrow for the cost of shipping.

I don't know what Florida says, but I know that in Missouri all cars
over 10 years are exempt from the requirements of a mileage statement,
but the Missouri titles still allow to specify the mileage. In other
words, you can says exempt or you can put the actual mileage.

I haven't the studied the pictures of this car. I think it looks like it
is in pretty good shape. But, I also agree with all of your general
comments about things to watch for. It is irrelevant right now, because
I can't buy another car, until I sell mine.

Alabama cars over 10 years old are also exempt from mileage statements. This
is actually not a bad idea because once a car reaches 10 years, condition is
really all the matters.

Do you feel lucky, punk? :-)

Ball joint failure USUALLY occur a slow speeds and tight turns (not sure
why) but they CAN occur at speed (9 of the ten reports I have -
including my own 300TD - are at slow speeds when maneuvering). I would
NOT trust a damaged ball joint more than a few months, but that's
ENTIRELY a matter of how worn the joint is. There is NO criteria for how
long it will last once you lub it. One that had only recently started to
deteriorate MIGHT last for years and one that was worn to 98+% of the
failure point might let go as you drove out of the driveway the first
time. You REALLY don't want one to fail on you - especially not at speed!

Both IN and MI have a 10 year exemption on mileage. By the time a car is

Not any reliable/usual warning before total failure in the cases I know
of. You have ALREADY been warned. When the grease quieted the joint,
that was your warning that the joint WAS bad and needed to be replaced.

This failure is simply a matter of ball joint wear. That is checked on
every yearly safety inspection in Pennsylvania (and most other states
that have safety inspections). It's something that should be checked at
least yearly and more often if an old car is driven HARD. Mercedes is
nice in that they ball joints USUALLY make squeaking/groaning noises
before they fail - once they make noise, the joint IS trashed. The fact
that grease quiets the joint is a diagnostic and does NOT repair the
wear that exists and only slightly slows further wear.

Hi Kaleb,

Can you tell me what the MB interface box looks like? I found this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=110011375513 which says
it is an interface - but I think it's just a PIE cable which I already
have. The changer I bought came with the PIE cable - but if I correctly
remember what you said, I need the following:
PIE cable.
the MB Interface Box
and 2 Becker cables to connect to the Amp/tuner.

I'm almost ready to spend $180 with Rusty for the MB Interface and since
it;s a special order, it's not returnable. I *think* I need it, but would
like your experienced opinion. - A photo the Becker/Alpine trunk setup
would be perfect! But that may be too much trouble.

I could see this because the trucks were backed up from the entrance
to the overpass over I 35 where I was driving. Saw the Revenooers on
the overpass dipping tanks.

If you don't pay fuel tax, stay away from big crowds. It takes 2-3
tankfulls to get the red dye out of a tank. I buy road fuel for the
tractors this time of year, because I am too cheap to pay for filling
the Diesel tank with off-road fuel. (and it don't get stolen if it
ain't there) I can see how long it takes to get the red out. Not
much difference in price. On-farm delivery is convenient, but the
jobbers and oil companies eat up most of the 50 cents or so of tax savings.

Yeah, you know, all this talk of value determining registration cost is new
to me. And are we also talking about some sort of sales tax that one has to
pay when they buy a car? Never heard of that.

As for registration cost, I always assumed it was just based on the year of
the car, since most of my vehicles have always been around $35 - $40, while
my wife's newer cars have been significantly more to register.

Yes. I lost a timing belt in my Camry (I want to say an '86 but am not 100%

In Indiana, to transfer a title you have to pay the sales tax. If you
buy at a dealer they collect it and document that it has been paid.
If you buy from a private seller you declare the purchase price paid
on the title, along with the odometer reading at the time of sale, and
you have to pay 6% of that when you transfer the title.

Annual registration renewal also has a component based on value, but
in that case not on the specific sales price of the car but some
average book value for the make, model, and year.

I see plenty of the older Bimmers you mention here on the east coast - but
they don't seem to be very well cared for. Same for older Volvos/ Lots
around but they are often appear neglected IMO. In my area (Va) there is no
salt used on the roads either - just sand IIRC.

But I believe farther north where the snow comes down more often and gets
deeper, they use salt or some type of chemical.

And if the NADA Blue Books and others that say they provide values for used
cars - you can see how the values of those cars drop dramatically after
new. But it's more than a quality issue - quantity comes in to play ad just
the fact that there are only so many who want a used BMW or Volvo.

if it's an interference engine.

Worst life I ever heard of was in a 1.9L 1987 Escort, 18 months and
35,000 highway miles. Owner was not happy. At least the 1.9 wasn't
interference fit.

I've only broke one in my life, a friend bought another friend's

right. I was coaxing it up to 70 (in 5th) on the downhills hoping
to keep more than 55 up the next hill, and it just quit like I'd
shut off the ignition. 3 seconds later, still in 5th gear, the
oil pressure light came on and I punched the clutch. I realized
within another ten seconds that I'd buusted the timing belt, but I
had to pull the cover off to convince the car's new owner that we
weren't going to fix that one on the roadside.

Va has a sales tax for new and used cars - 2% or 2.5% IIRC. The great

futile attempts on my part to talk her into some fine European

turning in for a new model for less money, but)
Anyway, every time she has that ( under warranty )Camry in to the dealer

in nature, no non critical interior trim stuff. So far the car has not
been all that they're cracked up to be.
I do know the Camry has serious sludge issues and need to be run on
synthetic and changed more frequently than scheduled service.

She had a couple of Tauruses before that, neither made it much past 100k

Re: [MBZ] Off Topic Toyota Camry

2007-06-11 Thread Jeff Zedic

Gentlemen,

The authouritative answer to the interference question is yes. All Camrys
since their inception are interference designs. All new Toyota's since the
mid eighties also are to the best of my knowledge. Honda's as well.

I say this after having worked for Toyota at dealership and HQ level for 13
mind-numbing years.

As for belt change intervals, the original belt should be changed by
100Kmi/160,000KM. In the mid nineties they changed the REPLACEMENT belt spec
and increased the recommended interval from 60kmi to 100kmi.

The four banger is an excellent, reliable engine as is the six. They were
some issues on the early sixes, and Lexus V8s with leaky waterpumps making
the t-celt idler pulley rust and the abrasives produced would shred the
belt.

As for the death by a thousand cuts, that was a shyster dealer, no doubt.

The probelm with the 88 Tercel (EL32) was with the crappy carb design that
attempted to use a swirl combustion and proceeded to instead fill the
combustion chamber and valve seats and intake manifold with carbon causing
severe loss of powerthey brought out several different fixes which
never really solved the bad design problem. Problem was finally solved when
the fuel injected the next model (EL43)

Friends of mine working for Toyota in the UK told me that the Corolla had
the same carb but did NOT suffer the same problems. May have been a fuel
quality issue as welllow octane(?)

[MBZ] Quick Reminder Needed - Allen Key Size for Starter

Gang,

As I set out tonight or tomorrow on my road trip and move myself and my

The starter gave me intermittent problems a while back, but has been working

loose Hmmm.

I will be carrying my spare starter in the trunk as I have for a while now.
But I need to make sure I have the right tools.

You don't really expect the gummint folks to just let you decide how much

tax that gets ya. I just bought an Expedition from my daughter, and in
order to register it, I have to pay sales tax on the transaction. Oh, and
just in case you get a sweetheart deal from a relative, there is a table
that says what the nominal value is, and if your sales price is less than
80% of that value, you pay tax on the 80% number. There is still a gift

Rusty can get the socket you need. you will also need a torque
wrench in the correct range.

Order 2-3 extra o-rings and at least one extra copper seal while you are at it.
It is good practice to also replace the delivery valve springs
whileyou are in there.

Rusty has all the parts.

Be sure you have a pick or at least an awl to retrieve and position
the copper seals.

Clean everything on the top of the pump before you start. Back out
the delivery valve holders 21-3 turns, until the o-ring shows, and
clean again. the orings will drag up a bunch of dirt
with them. After everything is clean, then remove the vlave holders
the rest of the way.

John Reames did a great write-up on this list a few years ago. If
you can't find it I can send it.

Yes. They all seem to like to have a lot of small taxes as opposed to
one or two larger, general taxes.

It would make more sense to have a small, flat registration fee to
cover the administrative cost of just that function, and a larger fuel
tax, since that hits the actual users of the roads more fairly
(i.e. in proportion to the amount of driving done) but by having more
small taxes they can hide how much they are taking from you more
effectively.

First off, this is government we are talking about so very little chance of
them trying to do something that would
make sense.

Secondly, around here,we have both a sales tax levied every time a vehicle is
sold and a substantial fuel tax. We
also pay an annual registration fee that probably is somewhat related to the
cost of administration.

We pay the sales tax based upon either the book value or the sales receipt,
whichever is higher. For example, I
just sold an old LTD to a friend of one of my sons for $1K. Book value is
essentially nil but he had to pay the tax
on the full $1K. 7% so $70 for the good provincial government. If he had bought
from a dealer, he would also have
to pay the federal goods and services tax of 6%. So far, they have not levied
that on private vehicle sales.

On a new $50K vehicle, the tax is not insignificant. That would be $6,500 or
about what I paid for my old MB.

My father had a Bobcat and I considered buying a Pinto more than once but never
did. The motor might have been
tough but it was so noisy and rough that comparing it to a Honda made it
undesirable. At one time, about 20 plus
years ago I wanted a small station wagon. I tried a really nice Pinto wagon
with the woodgrain etc. A really nice
loaded little car with low miles. The roughness and noise of the engine under
acceleration persuaded me to buy a
Honda Civic Wagon instead. The Honda was a good little car and I put a whole
lot of miles on it in about 3 years.
It was only a 1.3 litre engine and the gearing was such that I was always
trying to go from 5th into an
non-existent 6th gear. I guess they geared it a bit lower so you could load the
wagon and haul. The 4 dr sedans
with the 1.5 engines were much more pleasant to drive.

The 2.3 liter 4 cylinder that was used in the Pintos
and other models was also a favorite in Capris (not
the pants) as were the earlier 2.0 liter 4 cylinders
as well.

A pretty tough little engine.

 changed both ball joints on

Re: [MBZ] Off Topic Toyota Camry

2007-06-11 Thread R A Bennell
Try to find out what work has been done on it. It may need struts all the way
around and a rack. My wife has a 98
Avalon and that is its current situation at only about 70K miles. It has also
been somewhat troublesome in the
electrical area - power window issues, climate control issues etc. Don't know
if the Camry was built in Japan or
US. Avalon was built in US and that may be part of its problem. We have a
4Runner that was built in Japan and apart
from rust it has actually been pretty good. A 95 wih about 120K miles. So far
just things that wear out like a
clutch, brakes, CV boots, battery and muffler.

Thanks for all the information on the Camry's. If I can buy it cheap
enough, I will get it, my wife can drive it for a while and then I can
sell it.

Re: [MBZ] Off Topic Toyota Camry

2007-06-11 Thread Jeff Zedic

If it's built in Japan the VIN will start with JT2 for cars and JT4 for
trucks, if I remember correctly. The US made Camry, Avalon and Corolla
started with 2T1 and 1T1.

Easiest way to tell.aside from the driver's pillar sticker.

[MBZ] Odometer statement

2007-06-11 Thread Robert Bigham
iIn Texas, a car that is old enough (think maybe ten yr) is exempt from
the odometer statement. Every car I have bought since the 5 yr old
Grand Marquis in the late 1980's has been exempt.

There are is also a box for mileage is in excess of mechanical limits of
odometer: My 1976 Ford pickup has over 400,000 miles, over 225K of
which I put on it. Odometer goes to 100,000 then rolls over to zero.
Seen it do it three times.

There's also a box for the mileage shown is not the correct mileage;
correct mileage is unknown.

But old cars are exempt in Texas and I suspect elsewhere also.

Think about it. A car that has been through several owners may have
a reasonably correct odometer and it may not, and no one necessarily
knows what is correct. That shouldn't make the PO a criminal if he doesn't
misrepresent the mileage or mess with it to try to fool others, or make
it impossible to sell legally because the PO can't tell the true mileage.

At some point we have to start trusting our own appraisal of condition.
especially since mileage is really no more than an indicator. It took
me about 30 minutes to decide, more than 18 months back,
that the 123.223 was OK. Anyone else can do the same thing.

My 123.223, coolant leak and all, has a great engine, automatic
transmission, and running gear. It shows 142K miles now, and uses
no detectable oil at 4,000 miles between changes. I do the book
maintenance as far as possible: change all fluids and filters at
reasonable intervals, oil analysis maybe every other change.
Last oil analysis showed excess fuel in oil: check fuel system.

 Hi Loren,
I know you;re just repeating what the seller wrote - but have you or
 anyone
else heard about such a exemption? I would think a 10 yr old car would be
even more important to have the proper mileage listed?

Have you or other heard of state or federal law exempting 10+ yr old
vehicles? I know all the vehicles I've bought and sold in Va have req'd
 the
mileage statement - and if it was beyond the mechanical limits such had to
 be stated.

 Loren's right - sounds suspicious.

Gang,

As I set out tonight or tomorrow on my road trip and move myself and my
pooch to our new house, could someone remind me the size of the allen key
required to replace the starter (83 240D).

The starter gave me intermittent problems a while back, but has been working
fine for some time now. I noticed that the solenoid part
