RoundUp

The active ingredient is glyphosate. The off brand work nearly
as well and are cheaper. The stuff is actually rather
bio-friendly. It kills only the plants that get there leaves
sprayed, bio-degrades in a couple months, and it's uncommon for
it to contaminate water supplies. I use it mostly on poison ivy.

This is if you want to kill the plants that are _currently_
growing. It does nothing to stop future growth.

Re: [MBZ] killing weeds

2007-07-13 Thread Sunny Letot
I have goats -- they work well, as long as you confine them, which is not as
easy as it sounds! I'd also note that if the area is too large, the goat (or
any other critter) will pick and choose and it will take forever to clear the
area. The best way, if you don't want a herd of goats or a flock of geese is to
confine them to a small area then move them to the next small area to be
cleared, rather than leaving a couple of animals to roam a larger area where
they will clear selectively. Just like us, they have their preferences, and
won't clear an area unless you make it necessary -- i.e. there's a limited
amount of total forage, so they eat it all. Keep in mind that goats are hard on
trees -- they will graze off the lower limbs and strip the bark, if given the
opportunity.

Geese are another option -- they're herbivores and excellent watch critters
(they raise all manner of he!! when strangers come around, and their bite can
be very discouraging -- sort of a pinch on steroids, and they have the reach to
make their point). As with any other critter, confine them to the area you want
cleared. They won't hurt your trees, if thats an issue.

Another couple of very effective, critter-free, non-toxic options --

20% vinegar -- this is horticultural vinegar. The grocery store kind is only
5% acid, which won't help. Thsi stuff will kill whatever you spray with it as
long as the weather is warm-to-hot, and as long as it doesn't rain for a couple
of days.

propane torch -- a little wand torch (about $20 or less most places, incl.
Northern Tools) that connects to a propane tank. Where I am, it's been raining
like the original flood, so there's no chance of starting a wildfire if I
wanted to. It's a particularly effective solution for weeds growing in cracks,
or for selective weeding around valuable plants, but is also good in your
application -- clearing an area.

If your property drains into a creek or water feature with fish or ducks, DO
NOT use Round-Up -- it is extremely toxic to fish and fowl.

Not at all. Pretend it's hydraulics, if it'll help. Not much
happens if you hook _both_ sides to the high pressure line!

You should be able to measure the resistance between the
two pins of the clutch. Coupla ohms? Hook +12V AND GROUND
to it and it should clack. If it doesn't, then yes indeed
it is bad.

It really sucks to replace a moderately expensive part

What is a good home brew or store bought spray to kill certain areas of
vegetation? I know diesel works pretty good. Want to kill all living

Michelins are ok, but high-priced. Best price/value I have found is
Conti Touring. The higher-end major brand tires are often ok, but
are high-priced. Avoid Wal-mart/Sams.

[MBZ] OT: Questions for A/C wizards

2007-07-13 Thread Alex Chamberlain
I've been driving my Lincoln to work because the A/C in my 124 is
acting up and the weather here's been unbearable. Today the lights on
the climate control suddenly started blinking (indicating an error
condition) and simultaneously the engine hiccupped. I immediately
thought, Ack, low Freon, clutch must have locked up for an instant
before the pressure switch told the computer to disengage it, I've got
to catch it before it breaks the serpentine belt and turned off the
A/C. I got to work without further incident and popped the hood to
see if anything was obviously wrong. While contemplating the
compressor in my usual half-awake morning state I suddenly realized,
Hey, those service ports don't look right! Indeed they didn't.
Some bozo apparently put on those screw-on McParts R12-to-R134a
fittings in order to recharge the system with R134a, and didn't even
bother to slap on a sticker under the hood indicating that a
conversion (such as it is) had been done. I didn't notice before
because the usual red and blue plastic caps aren't there.

The absence of caps on the valves, however, made it clear where the
leak was: the high side fitting was actually bubbling with oil and
escaping refrigerant. So I guess I need to replace that
one---hopefully it's just the R134A adapter that's bad, not the real
R12 fitting underneath. But then what?

I know all the concerns about decreasing A/C performance by using
R134a in a system designed to use R12, but this is not a Mercedes A/C
system where cooling capacity is already marginal---this is a Detroit
system, that when functioning right makes the inside of the car feel
like an Eskimo's meat locker, even in ambient temps over 100. I still
want it to work right, though, and not introduce any new leaks if I
can help it! And I have no way to know whether any seals have been
replaced with R134a-compatible ones, or whether any other part of the
conversion was done right. (I suspect not.)

Questions: Should I replace the fitting and just go ahead and charge
with R134A and the appropriate oil on top of whatever's already in
there? Is there a conversion oil that I should be using as
preferable to regular 134a-compatible oil for a retrofitted R12
system? Is there any additive I can put in that'll help with the
seals?

Or should I vacuum the whole system, replace the receiver/dryer, and
refill with hydrocarbons (for test purposes!) a la Jim C.? Is doing
the latter but not replacing the R/D living dangerously, or is what
they say on the sites that sell HC refrigerants true, about moisture
not being a big deal in a system thus pressurized? If I go with HC,
should I take off the R134a conversion adapters, or is messing with
those asking for trouble (possibly stressing the old R12 fittings and
making them leak, necessitating replacement)?

If you do get occasional snow, check out the Nokian WR So far as I know
it's still the only all season tire that is also rated as a snow tire,
but they wear as long as most other all season tires
http://www.nokiantires.com/en/tire_wr.aspx?season=summer
In some places, if you get tangled up with another car on snowy
surfaces, having the snow rating symbol on your tire can keep you from
getting a ticket, and in some cases if you have the snow tires and the
other guy doesn't, they'll rule it the other guys fault on the spot due
to improper equipment for conditionsjust a thought.

Personally I look at good tires for winter conditions as cheap
insurance, costs about the same as an insurance deductable, and they're
a lot more fun than spending the night in a ditch. and it only snows a
couple of times a year here, but we usually get a nice dose of ice with it.

Jim,

the bushings are not in the cabin, but at the transmission. There

When I put it back on, I may have miss mounted by a few teeth on the

IIRC, the linkages are threaded, unless you twisted
them in their mounts the new bushings should just
pop in and you're off to the races. No length or
geometry changes at all. What splines? Did I miss

Re: [MBZ] 1993 300e 2.8 wiring harness, 230 new car(s

2007-07-13 Thread Nick Gough
Gary,

Our 1993 300E 2.8 has the 104.942 engine in it. I've understood this problem to
exist on W124 cars for 1994 1995 models and W202 cars from 1991-1997. Did it
also occur on the W210 models?

I checked the wiring that I could see without taking off the cap over the plugs
on the twin-cam engine, and all appeared in fine shape, no degrading was/is
apparent. My mechanic has also said he's not seen issues with it.
If the issue did exist on our car, I'm wondering if the PO had them replaced
under warranty or paid for the work? I'll go check the records this weekend...
I have them stashed away at home. It was originally a leased car and was then
purchased by them once the lease expired, since they liked the car so much. It
spent its life in LA until they traded it in and the dealer put it on the
auction block where a great used car shop I know of, acquired it. We bought it
in 2003 and have really enjoyed it.

Thx.

I think the biodegradeable wiring came into the W124 line with the
introduction of the M104 engine in 1993. The 2.8 should still be an
M103, right?

As for getting the dealer to pay for it, the only successful people
I've heard of were the original owners and very good customers of the
particular dealer, and the dealer took it upon themselves. I don't
believe MB corporate has ever authorized a replacement.

Between our dogs' digging and peeing, our lawn is pretty poor. So when
we relegated them to a pen at the back of the yard in order to try to
sell our house, we did not weed it, thinking they would decimate the
weeds. They leave the weeds alone.

I have wondered if non-neutered dogs have more caustic pee.

I was going to ask how one could control weeds that grow up through a
brick patio (non-mortared). Wonder if the torch idea would be good for

I have had good service from Michelins, long miles on them, which I
think must be due to a fairly hard compound. A hard compound is
probably not the best for all-weather use, if I understand that soft is
generally better in rain, snow, etc.

Perhaps the mile warranty might be indicative of the hardness of the tire?

Torch burns off the foliage but does not kill the roots; they will
grow back in short order.

I think round-up would be good for what you describe.

Re: [MBZ] tires, again

2007-07-13 Thread ernest breakfield
i'm of the feeling that i want  tire to perform, first and foremost;
if it won't do that well, i don't care how long they last!

i've got Pirelli P3000 Cinturatos on the '85 300D right now that i'm
happier with than the Michelins i had on there before these; i disliked
the handling of those Michelins enough that i actually returned them. (i
know it makes a difference, but sorry, i can't recall this many years
later which model Michelin it was.) quiet, stable and comfortable, i
don't have any issue with the Pirellis in the wet, but frankly i haven't
a great deal of experience with them in the wet, either, as i'd
typically be driving the J**p XJ given the choice of vehicles when
things get sloppy.

(OT warning; motorcycle content follows)
FWIW, i have Michelins on my moto and love them (as do most who've
tried them in a similar application); the Michelin Anakee is the best
non-knobby tire i've had on the BMW GS, and while it wears slightly
faster than the traditional GS favorite (the Metzler Tourance), the grip
in wet and dry seems much better.
for dirt use, the GS wears Continental TKC-80 knobbies (a.k.a.
Twinduros); an amazing all around performer on and off pavement, but
made of such a sticky rubber that they can go away fast in hard use
under 800 lbs of machine and rider...

cheers!

SALE??!?? they are having a sale?

I need stuff, lots of stuff. Wonder where I can hide it once I get
it home.

We had a yard sale a few weeks ago and nobody really wanted all the
books we had out. Told the oldest boy he had to trade them in and
could use the proceeds. Took four boxes of book to used book store.
They bought three books.

I still have four boxes of book, but the kid got $34.00. One book
turns out to be a rare enough play that I saved years ago from the
trash at university. He got $30 for this little pamphlet thing.

I told him that would fill the tank in Gump

if replicas, should be able to flip them for $300 or so minimum. If I

Ah, thank you for that information. Hopefully as a Japanese company
which usually strive for zero defects any issue with tires exploding
were addressed.
Of course it's hard to know if it was a manufacturing issue or nail
lurking for you that day. I would think if it was widespread we
would have heard more about
it like the exploding Firestone Ford Explorer mess. Even a few tires
exploding now can get NHTS to wake up like say for
http://money.cnn.com/2007/06/27/autos/chinese_tire_recall/index.htm

I note the warranty seems to be 60 months in the USA, but on only 4
years or 100K km in canada, that and they cheerfully take no
responsibility outside of any issue
than the tire, I'm not sure any other tire company would assume
responsibility for other damages either?

Well all of which doesn't make you a happy consumer either...

Re: [MBZ] tires, again

2007-07-13 Thread Loren Faeth

Interesting. I guess there is no consensus, which is why everyone
hates oil and tire threads on the list. Conti is the only brand and
have never had a slipped belt with. I will admit that 20-30 years
ago, when Eurotire was in business, I always bought German made
Contis. I am not sure I trust American made Contis, but so far so
good. I think I have 8 or 10 of them on various cars with no
problems so far. As I stated previously, I trust softer tires much
more than hard tires. I used to deliver papers in the mud and snow
on gravel roads, which is about the worst punishment for a tire. The
Contis never failed. I have always found them good in snow and ice,
but again, I do NOT buy the high end tires, but the touring or S-T
rated tires for my Diesels, and even the Ford van and the Datsun
pickup. H or V tires are entirely different. I have little
experience with high speed tires. For me the midrange Contis have
delivered high reliability, and a very good price/value ratio.

Another thing that makes a big difference is size. We had an old set
of Hercules tires on a farm truck for 30 years. They were 7.50- 17
and although they didn't have much traction, they never failed. This
truck would make several 400 mile trips a year, and shorter ones.
Almost every other 7-50-17 we had on various trucks would come apart
long before they wore out. In every other size, the tire dealers had
trouble with Hercules truck tires. Our old Hercules tires were on
the truck when it was underwater in the Flood of '73 before we bought it.

Loren

I've owned 2 300Es and I converted both to 134a. I was not happy with

systems anyway.

Considering the fact that you don't know what has been done to your
system and you don't even know what oil is in the system, I sugges thay
you dump purge the system. Then recharge with the correct oil and
R134a.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: Questions for A/C wizards

Re: [MBZ] OT: Questions for A/C wizards

2007-07-13 Thread Robert Tara Ludwick
Just replace the schrader valves in the fittings and get new caps,
vacuum it down and recharge and you'll be back to looking for a jacket
in no time.
Those screw on fittings are the standard for retrofit. They generally
have some high strengh loctite type stuff on the threads so they can't
be removed very easily without damaging the threads on the original
fitting. This is a requirement to prevent tampering.
Ford AC systems are pretty stout, no worries about r134a not cooling
enough. AC systems are the one thing the 'merican cars have up on
everyone else.
If it's an ofifice tube system instead of an expansion valve system, and
you're in a hot climate, you might want to consider putting a variable
orifice valve in the thing. They work nicely ( they don't do much up
north in cooler climates )

year Of the other pair, one has good paint and the other could use a
repaint, but is not the ugliest I have seen.

We'll hope it wasn't that type of bar.

Now, is four skins that deal where the stuff a duck inside a chicken

A Chief Petty Officer who worked for me and I (I was a LT) were at a bar
during Happy Hour. We were in Seattle for a computer conference.

We asked what the munchies were, and the waitress answered, Potato Skins.
I asked for a plate and she suggested two helpings, one for me and one for
the CPO.

I consented.

She turned to the cook and screamed, FOUR SKINS.

The Chief Petty Officer about died because he was taking a big drink of the
local beer when these words were uttered.

I've never been fond of michelins either. They last a long time, but
they're just plain squirilly. I've had about the same luck with
Yokohamas. I had a set of those on a car for over 80k miles, but they
scared me half to death when it rained or on a mountain road

I have Dunlops on my bike, and they are far more

don't think I've ever heard a biker suggest a Michelin
 in a conversation.
