Re: [MBZ] Bathtub and bell curves

2007-08-05 Thread Tom Hargrave
Edward,

The feedback was general directed to everyone. The bell curve is more
correctly called a standard, normal curve. There is also a proper name for a
bathtub curve but I don't remember it right now.

The right side of the curve may take on the shape of a bell curve for items
like a light bulb, in this case it's a standard normal curve the early
failures are termed outliers. But with some products, the line continues to
rise when MTBF is approached with others, the line flattens out when MTBF
is approached. In these cases, the curve can-not be made to resemble a
standard normal curve, regardless of the scale used.

Hello Tom

By the way, a bell curve bathtub curve do not complement each other. A
bathtub curve tends to be more one sided, with most failures on the tail
end. A bell curve is balanced. - Tom

If you say so. I have been wrong or mistaken before; it is/will not be a
new
experience. But then, I'm not a statistician, I'm just a guy who uses
simple
statistics in engineering applications.

Statistics is the science that deals with the art of making decisions in
the face
of uncertainty. I usually merely need to make sense of data which
approximate
a normally distributed random variable, so the high powered statistical
methods
are not a regular part of my thing.

I presume you shared your insight on this with Mitch also, who told us
about the
bathtub curve, thus:

More like the antithesis of the bell curve. A 'normal distribution' bell
curve peaks at the mean and drops off on both sides. The 'bathtub' as he
describes it, has peaks on both ends and a wide trough in the middle.
  - Mitch.

There was someone speaking to this before Mitch, I know not whom.

The one sided curve you describe sounds to me something like a sort of
chi-squared
distribution with a good many degrees of freedom. Or perhaps it is no more
than a
comparison of time to failure versus cumulative number of failures. All
things fail in
the end. Nothing lasts forever. Some things come closer than others.

I don't find anything called bell or bathtub in my old statistics
references.
Presumably these are laymen's terms describing the density function of the
normal distribution in the bell case and something else, I really know not
what,
in the bathtub case.

As defined by Mitch, the bathtub case sounds like a simple upside down plot
of
a normally distributed random variable, which we must all admit would look
like
what Mitch described.

We may always plot and display our data however we wish. In my old
academic
discipline, some types of data are conventionally plotted always in the
second
quadrant. I know of no particular reason why that is a better presentation
or leads
to more insightful analysis. It's just done that way.

But it is all fun. Have nice day.

Robert

 Robert,

 Clear as mud.

Understanding MTBF is the reason I searched for a 70's Corvette with about
50,000 miles on the clock when I decided to buy one. Even though my Vette
is
a 1977, I know that all of the major modules and assemblies are in decent
shape. The rubber parts are another story.

Mercedes on the other hand are much better designed I have no problem
purchasing one with 200,000 miles on the clock, providing everything (and
I
mean everything) works when I buy the car. I understand that some
assemblies
are approaching end of life but I also know that quite a few have been
replaced quite a few will go another 100,000 miles or so. I also don't
have a problem with putting a Mercedes with 200,000 miles on the clock on
the road, but only after I've gone over all of the systems.

Compare the 1977 Corvette to the 3 - 5 year water heater a same year
Mercedes to the 12 year water heater discussed earlier.

By the way, a bell curve bathtub curve do not complement each other. A
bathtub curve tends to be more one sided, with most failures on the tail
end. A bell curve is balanced.

Yes.

Reed valves can be broken if the compressor sucks liquid refrigerant.

I suspect it is the same, but I do not know for sure.

One other possibility is that the expansion valve is somehow
extra-open such that the compressor has nothing to push against.
That would show heavy flow but no real pressure or suction.
But I'm not sure it can actually do this.

Toyota, Benz, and Nissan, along with occasional US makers, used that
compressor. Nippondenso, don't have the model number handy.

Used in the W126, W124 chassis, Camry, Accord, and other. Take a look.

Check the low pressure switch for a short first, and check to make sure
the clutch is good (although the system should fault and toss out the
compressor if the clutch is slipping).

Reed valves are on the ends of the piston chambers in the compressor,
NS without dissasembly.

Watch when you take it out -- if there is gray crud all over, you
really need to flush the you-know-what out of it and install a filter
in the suction line, else the new compressor will follow the old. Best
to replace everything, sadly.

I had a 108 one time (1970 280S) that had the absolute
worst rumbling sound in the front end. It was coming
from the left front (driver's side) and was most
 certainly a bad wheel bearing.

I changed the LF wheel bearing and adjusted to spec
 with a dial indicator.
5 - The front end still rumbled.

I went over that thing with a fine tooth comb and was
never able to pin it down. A month after I bought it
someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse on it, and
I sold it with full disclosure.

Found out a few weeks later it was the *right* front
wheel bearing that was bad, but for soime reason the
noise transmitted through the suspension and sounded
like it was coming from the left front.

 Lesson learned.

Bad center u-joint sounds like a bad muffler, but varies with road
speed independent of engine speed. Cure is driveshaft replacement,
it's much cheaper to get a used shaft than replace the bearing ($650
last time I heard for the repair). Used shaft is about $100.

Check for vibration at the carrier -- just aft of the center of the
 driver's seat on the tunnel.

A bad carrier bearing makes a grinding noise.

2007-08-05 Thread Jim Cathey
The compressor is starting to get noisy too. I can really feel the
 engine
bogging down when the clutch engages, so I suspect the speed sensor is
detecting a rpm differential--seizure is imminent.

If that's it it will cycle off and not come back on until
the Klima is power-cycled. If it comes back on by itself
it's going off for some other reason.

If it's seizing up the debris could foul the reed valves,

I don't know -- she could be reaching a bit, but I see creampuff SLs of

Re: [MBZ] OT: Help a lost lister

2007-08-05 Thread Chuck Landenberger
Sunil,

I lived in the DC/MD/VA area for too many years until I retired in '99.

First rule is use the Metro. There is a Bethesda Stop. And pick
up one of the Metro Maps. The one fault w/the system is that
Georgetown didn't want/get a stop! Otherwise, it's all you need if
you just want to be in the metro area. Other places you'll need a
car. But stay off the Beltway, it's a circular parking lot most of
the time.

I'd suggest the Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian, Natural
History Museum, Archives, the National Cathedral, .. And oh, you
could call your senator and representative and meet w/them. If you
request it, you can get an American flag that has flown over the
Capitol... If you do get a car, try to see the Air and Space Annex
at Dulles International Airport...

Go to the top of the Washington Monument - great view. I don't know
if they allow anyone to walk up anymore, but it's 555 feet tall.
Otherwise there is an elevator.

You will fill up all your free time for a month being a tourist and
have stuff left over to see.

Enjoy.

Take care,

Chuck

What they all said. But if you find yourself OD'ing on the Mall and
getting claustrophobic in the City, there's some beautiful and quite
rural country out near Leesburg. Annapolis is a beauty of a town
that's just dripping with history. Charlottesville's worth a visit if
you can spare the time for a couple hour drive.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] [ SPAM ] RE: 78 240D Making Odd Noise

I had a 108 one time (1970 280S) that had the absolute
worst rumbling sound in the front end. It was coming
from the left front (driver's side) and was most
 certainly a bad wheel bearing.

I changed the LF wheel bearing and adjusted to spec
 with a dial indicator.

 The front end still rumbled.

2007-08-05 Thread Wonko the Sane
I disagree. If you are willing to walk a few blocks, the metro system will
get you almost anywhere you'd need to go (as a tourist). If the subway
doesn't go there, you can hop a bus at the subway stop.

I worked in DC for almost a decade and don't recall ever taking a cab or
driving to anything other than Arlington Cemetery. The only reason we drove
in to work (vanpool) was because there wasn't a metro stop as far south as I
lived.

I like the Metro stop in Georgetown. It's got one of
the longest escalators I've ever seen in my life. My
Dad was staying in Georgetown while he was being
treated for cancer at the university. I can remember
going up that escalator really trashed more than once.

It was awesome.

seem to be as respectful around it as they used to.

Since you'll be there a month, definitely get a ticket
for the Holocaust Museum. Another very powerful
 place.

Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian is good, too,
but don't go on a weekend - it will be packed.

One thing I never realized until I started going there
was that the memorials are open 24/7. I went into the
city once to take some night photos around the Mall,
and I was amazed that there were tour buses pulling up
to the Lincoln Memorial at 2:00 in the morning.

Be very, very careful about using a cab. If the
system is still in place, the cabs are zoned,
meaning that if you get the wrong cab, you'll get
gouged for going from one zone to another.
