My Dad's 1999 Ranger 2.5, 5 speed standard, bare basic truck gets

My 95 with the 2.3 has 230K on it and it runs absolutely perfect. No
smoke, rattles or major leaks and it was always owned by a friend of mine

sticky throttle body shaft at one time(all Frods do if you leave them sit
long around here) and he let it sit on the rev limiter while he went in

I've got a 95 Mazda B2300 (2.3L Ranger) with 5 speed and it can barely
do 75 up hills. I shift into 4th to maintain speed on any respectable
hill. The odometer quit at 190k about two years ago, but before that I
got about 19-23 highway MPG depending on how I drove it. In town is
17-20. I once got 12mpg when I was towing a trailer (empty!!!) at
75mph. The reason I got 12 is that the trailer was so heavy I couldn't
maintain speed in 5th AT ALL. So had to use 4th Mileage was better
with it loaded (14' utility trailer with books furniture) since I went
 70.

If you need a truck to abuse though... I HIGHLY recommend them. They
are also dirt cheap. The A/C is nothing short of fantastic.

I've got an OM617 tranny in the bed of mine at the moment :)

My 02 F150 Supercrew 4X4 with the 5.4 did a little better than 17 mpg(adjusted
to US gallons as I'm in Canada) on
the last trip out to the lake. That was over a distance of about 225 miles -
pretty well all highway. The
interesting thing is that is about as good as it has ever done and I was really
loaded. I had a stack of plywood,
OSB, and dimensional lumber in the box piled almost to the top of the bed
sides. I did keep my speed down to about
65 mph. I think that running it at 75 mph makes quite a difference. I guess one
should expect that given the
frontal area on a truck that size. They are not exactly aerodynamic
notwithstanding the improvements of recent
years. It is certainly much quieter than my old 68 Chevy C10.

I do remember taking it off because I couldn't get the trap out of the way
without removing the bracket. Also, it wouldn't allow me to move anything if
the bracket wasn't loose and removed from both studs.

So...you think the bracket isn't needed?

[MBZ] Sometimes you win one

2007-08-08 Thread Curt Raymond
A few weeks ago I managed to break the drainplug in the housing on my wife's
motorcycle. Then I managed to break the inner housing getting everything apart.
The inner housing was available, the outer was not.
So last weekend I tried to drill the offending bolt out. Dammed if I didn't
drill it off center. Bought some easyouts but she wouldn't budge. I plugged the
hole and oiled it as best I could and left it for a few days. Still no-go.
Today I cautiously drilled the next size up, I was worried it was too big and
I'd catch the threads. Then tried with the next size up easy out.
Well heck out came that bolt nice as you please. I was seriously worried I was
going to break the smaller easyout. I'd tried heat too...

I'd thought maybe I'd somehow crossthreaded but theres no sign of it, I have no
idea why it broke. I'll chase the threads with a tap and try the bolt a few
times before I button it all back up.

Anyway I thought I'd trumpet my success. Now I need to figure out how to make 2
broken side panels into 1 good one. Yay epoxy. This needs to be ridgid though
so no Shoe-Goo.

All,

It took a while, but I was finally able to disable the disfunctional starter
interlock on the 74 240D. The wiring
diagram for the interlock circuitry shows a rat's nest of switches, lines and
connectors. The actual interlock
relay is embedded inside the 10-pin box under the dash. But it can be defeated
by grounding pin 85 in the starter
relay on the firewall above the starter (as suggested by a fellow lister).
Very simple. The car can be started
again, and everything appears to be working fine.

Thanks,

years to build the place, mainly due to funding (or

My 02 F150 Supercrew 4X4 with the 5.4 did a little better than 17
mpg(adjusted to US gallons as I'm in Canada) on
the last trip out to the lake. That was over a distance of about 225
miles - pretty well all highway. The
interesting thing is that is about as good as it has ever done and I
was really loaded. I had a stack of plywood,
OSB, and dimensional lumber in the box piled almost to the top of the
bed sides. I did keep my speed down to about
65 mph. I think that running it at 75 mph makes quite a difference. I
guess one should expect that given the
frontal area on a truck that size. They are not exactly aerodynamic
 notwithstanding the improvements of recent
years. It is certainly much quieter than my old 68 Chevy C10.

Sometimes previous owners have used bad methods (like you are thinking)
to get them out and made a mess of them.
From memory I managed to get a standard Allen key in there.just
but my memory can be faulty. I would suggest that even if you have to
cut up a Allen key, don't use 'shortcuts' which can turn into 'longcuts'.

Ha, That reminds me of a whole bunch of years ago out in LA, I was
driving home at about 2 am at the speed limit, 55 mph on I 210 ( I
think that's the number , foothill freeway? been a while )and got
pulled over. The cop explained that the reason he pulled me over was
that the only people driving the speed limit at that time of night were
drunk, everyone else was going 80+...and weren't getting pulled over..go
figure. I was a commercial driver at the time and was pretty picky about
keeping my record clean so no speeding.

I did a little study on mileage at various speeds over

I keep detailed mileage records, so I'm convinced that
this was the result of the slower speed. I will say
that most of my highway driving is for short distances
of maybe 20-30 miles per trip, not that it matters.
However, if I was making a longer trip I might
 consider going faster..

[MBZ] Front Loading Washers

For what it's worth, I ust got the water bill for last
month, and with the new washer only having been on
line for about two weeks of the billing period, our
water consumption dropped about 20%. Tossing a few
percentage points in for variations, that's still a
noticeable drop.

I'll be watching to see what it drops to next month,

Dunno. I have no experience with the job on a 123. All I know is
that on my 124, there's no way a paperclip would have worked---it took
the wedge action and springiness of the official tool with its

A few weeks ago I managed to break the drainplug in the housing on my
wife's motorcycle. Then I managed to break the inner housing getting
everything apart. The inner housing was available, the outer was not.
So last weekend I tried to drill the offending bolt out. Dammed if I
didn't drill it off center. Bought some easyouts but she wouldn't budge. I
plugged the hole and oiled it as best I could and left it for a few days.
 Still no-go.
Today I cautiously drilled the next size up, I was worried it was too big
and I'd catch the threads. Then tried with the next size up easy out.
Well heck out came that bolt nice as you please. I was seriously worried I
was going to break the smaller easyout. I'd tried heat too...

I'd thought maybe I'd somehow crossthreaded but theres no sign of it, I
have no idea why it broke. I'll chase the threads with a tap and try the
bolt a few times before I button it all back up.

Anyway I thought I'd trumpet my success. Now I need to figure out how to
make 2 broken side panels into 1 good one. Yay epoxy. This needs to be
 ridgid though so no Shoe-Goo.

Re: [MBZ] 2.3-16V trans fluid

and a 19mm stub that I can stick in a box wrench

That's what I do, using a 6-point box wrench.

It will take me a long time to fill the trans from dry with a 60cc
syringe on a hose, but I don't see any other way to get the fluid

McParts sells this little pump dingus with a hose on it for just
this purpose. Looks a lot like a soap dispenser pump, but much
larger. Won't empty a bottle, but gets most out. I just end up
pouring together bottles to get the level up to where it'll pump.

[MBZ] OT: 1992 Suburban AC

2007-08-08 Thread Jim Cathey
My BiL brought his burbinator by for an AC recharge.
Unfortunately that's not what's wrong with it. Surfing
for an hour or two got me nothing on how it's constructed.
The compressor wouldn't cut in, though the low side pressure
was plenty high and the switch on the accumulator was closed.

I jumped the compressor on to see what happened. The pipe to
the condensor gets hot, pipe from gets warm. By the time that
small line gets to the firewall it's ice cold. Accumulator
itself is warm, the suction hose at the compressor is coolish.

Unfortunately my gauge set wouldn't go on the high-side fitting,
so I don't have that pressure. No idea why the compressor won't
run either. Anybody got a quick checklist or a place to look
for the same? He's leaving tomorrow AM, so I probably won't
have time to do anything but who knows...

Oh, and the burbinator has rear AC too.
