2007-08-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
Bill,

If all you are interested in is sport then you really need to consider a
Ruger MKIII. They are wonderful shooting weapons, accurate reasonably
cheap to feed because they shoot 22LR cartridges.

http://www.impactguns.com/store/736676101061.html

If you have any ideas for home defense then consider a 45ACP from one of
several manufactures. The bullet is huge (0.45 diameter) and slow and will
stop your intruder. You don't want to kill him, just stop him - RIGHT NOW.
And if he dies from the results of his own actions, then.

Why not a 9mm that's so popular these days? Because a 9mm will not stop a
drug crazed invader unless you hit a vital spot in home defense, you don't
have time to aim. You only have time to point squeeze.

At the risk of being laughed at, I must again repeat my mantra that I spent
almost half of my five-plus decades in urban areas and have never found
myself in a situation where I'd have drawn a weapon if I'd have been
carrying one. Closest I've come to that was when I was being teased by a
street mime in NYC. He deserved to be shot not only for making fun of me (I
was chewing gum) but because he was a mime.

The only time I've armed myself was when I was stationed on Governors Island
(NYC). If you arrived for the ferry boat after 11:00 pm, you had to wait a
half hour instead of a quarter hour between ferry boats, parked just south
of Wall Street. ... I kept a stout piece of oak and a hunting knife tucked
under the driver's seat of my MBG, and that was only because I was sitting
rather exposed (but with pants on) in a small convertible. My experience
was that if approached by someone menacing, one had only to say f-off and
the guy went away. It is only when one shows fear that one becomes a victim.

I've shot weapons -- 45 handgun and 9 mm handgun and M-16 (all
military-training related). This was done solely as part of my training:
trying to hit the middle of the paper and earn a pretty blue ribbon w/
expert E on it. I've owned guns -- all inherited, none ever purchased --
and gladly left every one behind when I departed marriage #1.

Now, if you feel more secure with a 9 mm tucked into your pants, then I
guess that is your right. Personally, I'd be more afraid of shooting a
testicle off during a sudden frenzy of scratching than I'd be of needing to
get into a firefight over my lunch break.

Let us stand for our closing prayer.

Interesting,

I had an Uncle who I felt perfectly safe in a car with as long as he was
drunk but he could not drive when he was sober. He also never got into an
accident except when he was sober and he could not eat when he was sober.

He was a DC crane repairman at Bethlehem Steel. These are the huge girder
cranes that reach out pick up many, many tons of steel at one time.

He consumed about 1.5 fifths of Whiskey a day for as long as I knew him,
except for his last 4 years. He died of cirrhosis of the liver @ 59 years
old he was miserable from age 55 until his death.

2007-08-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
A loaded handgun can sit on a kitchen table for 20 years, perfectly safe.
But an untrained individual can pick it up, point it at someone bang
he'd dead.

And as outlined in the example above, handguns don't kill people, people
kill people. Also, in the example above, the person who pulled the trigger
did not kill the other person, the irresponsible handgun owner killed the
other person. Handguns are not unsafe, many gun owners are unsafe.

If you want to discuss unsafe then lets talk about the number of people
killed in auto accidents every year. while we are at it, compare the
number to the number of handgun caused deaths.

Look at the numbers you'll have to agree that we should go after the
grossly larger number first - we should ban all cars!!

Another option for those of us who troll thrift stores on occasion is the
$21 Garmin ColorMap I picked a few years ago. Never seen another, though.
They are very handy when travelling in unfamiliar areas, and at the very
least will track where you have been if you happen into an area you don't
have a map for. Having speed, distance, elevation, direction, the next road
coming up, etc can be quite useful, and extra memory and maps are readily
available [for mine, anyway], though a national update cost many times more
than I paid for the unit.

Joking aside, I really do want one -- but I want it to do what I need it to

Nope, I keep one safely hidden in my bedroom and it's not in a traditional
hiding place. I can reach it less than a minute but I need to get out of bed

[MBZ] Handguns and the law

2007-08-17 Thread Robert Bigham
When I was being trained for familiarization with the Government .45, our
instructor told us If you shoot someone with this pistol and hit him in
the
finger, it is going to knock him down.

He also disproved the canard that the pistol is more dangerous to an
adversary if you throw it than if you shoot it. The man could powder
small rocks 50 yards away. My class learned to shoot pretty well if I
remember correctly.

Before the Brady Law went into effect, I felt a strange need to own a pistol
the feds wouldn't know about. I was undecided between a Government .45
automatic, which I thought I knew about, and a .357 Magnum revolver.

A gun store guy explained the difference thus: Suppose you were shooting
it out with someone taking cover behind the corner of a brick building.
The
.357 Magnum will shoot through the builidng. The Government .45 will
knock the building down.

The 9 mm has low recoil, but it is nowhere near as powerful as either the
Government .45 or the .357 Magnum.

For maximum power and recoil, try a Ruger .44 Magnum, but that is another
story.

If you have any ideas for home defense then consider a 45ACP from one of
several manufactures. The bullet is huge (0.45 diameter) and slow and will
stop your intruder. You don't want to kill him, just stop him - RIGHT NOW.
And if he dies from the results of his own actions, then.

[MBZ] 124 screw/clip terminals/FUSE panel

2007-08-17 Thread wilton strickland

As I suspected, electric screw terminals in my 87 300D are, indeed, mounted
on underside of the FUSE panel/holder under left rear corner of the hood IN
FRONT of rear firewall, NOT above driver's footwell like the 123. (Because
I'm nearly disabled, I'm not able to explore as easily as I used to - it
has become a matter of not simply looking as I did in the past. Everything
I do takes a LOT of effort. Even using a scredriver is hard. I have to
make every effort productive.)

For nearly 2 yrs I've been plugging and unplugging my mobility scooter
charger at cig. lighter. Few days ago, Eric Peterson sent me an MB rear
dome light switch, which I installed on a separate circuit installed by PO
to control power to charger. This circuit, however was always hot. To
preclude leaving charger on accidently, i. e. overnight, etc., I needed to
put the scooter charging system on a circuit controlled by the
master (ignition) switch. I have now installed this circuit on terminal
#1 (cig. lighter, etc.) on underside of fuse holder. A special thanks to
Joe Knight for helping me confirm location of terminals before I removed
fuse holder.

Following are procedures to access the terminals:

1. Open hood to full, vertical position.
2. Disconnect battery.
3. Remove fuse acccess cover.
4. Loosen six screws in relay cover and fuse access cover frame (1 piece).
5. Remove relay cover and fuse access cover frame.
6. Loosen screw at front, center of fuse panel/holder.
7. Lift fuse panel/holder at front while pulling it forward to unhook rear
edge.
8. Continue pulling the fuse holder upward and forward while carefullly
pulling bundle of wires from box beneath fuse holder.
9. Turn fuse holder upside-down to reveal screw terminals on underside.

i'm a .45 acp lover myself, but this mystique of the miraculously
devastating .45 is all nonsense. the traditional 230 grain subsonic .45 is
a nice effective round, but it really won't knock an elephant 9 feet up into
the air. and if you shoot someone in the finger with one and he falls down,
it's probably because he's seen in the movies and thinks that's what you do
when shot. and a modern, high pressure 9mm will kill a guy just as well.

i personally like big bore guns (ask some of the kids about my .454), but
carry a .380 in real life as the bigger guns just make my pants fall down at
inopportune moments.

On 8/17/07, Robert Bigham [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

small rocks 50 yards away. My class learned to shoot pretty well if I

Before the Brady Law went into effect, I felt a strange need to own a

automatic, which I thought I knew about, and a .357 Magnum revolver.

For maximum power and recoil, try a Ruger .44 Magnum, but that is another

Years ago a man came into the ER who was missing the bottom half of his
scrotum but his testicles were in good shape, hanging by the vein, artery,
and spermatic cord.
His girlfriends husband had caught them in bed, he raised up on his knees
when the door flew open, and her husband shot between his legs with a .45
cal pistol.
A cop said the slug didn't hit his scrotum but that it had come close and
that was enough to blow part of it off.
It seemed unlikely at the time but since then I've seen what kind of damage
a .45 slug can do.
The doctor managed to sew what was left of the scrotum back around the
testicles and in 24 hours the suture lines were healed.

This is getting a little OT (unless you don't want to shoot the mercedes
in the garage through the fireproof wall), but a .357 mag revolver can shoot
a .38 special round, and a .44 mag can shoot a .44 special round.

In addition, Glaser safety slugs (prefragmented bullets) work well in
revolvers where you don't want to deal with overpenetration.

If you're going to pull the trigger, make sure you know what's behind your
target. It's surprising how this escapes a lot of people.

Depends on how its loaded, you don't need 3 super magnums for self defense, a
light load of #6s will do the job sufficiently.
Aim a little high 100 pellets in the face will deter most intruders.

I've had the opportunity to confront someone with a gun before and for sheer
intimidation factor a 12ga pump is hard to beat. Fortunately I did not have to
fire simply jacking the chamber closed (unloaded as it were) was plenty of
incentive for the intruder to lie down on the floor while I called the police.

Considering the way a 12 ga. kicks, I wonder about that pistol grip.

For turn by turn you're probably right but if you can read a map a $100 unit is
PLENTY.
I've got a Garmin E-Trex Legend that I really like. Its small, only has a few
buttons, is easy on batteries and updates quickly.
The only issue I have is Garmin seems to be dumber than a bag of hammers when
it comes to selling accessories for it. The Legend that I have uses a different
12v power adapter than all the other Etrex units and its been hard to find one.
Of course I haven't worked all that hard, it is easy on batteries and I use
rechargables...

Once you go someplace and want to come home its easy to follow the reverse
route but it doesn't give you turn by turn.

Re: [MBZ] Handguns and the law

2007-08-17 Thread Curt Raymond

I've read that back in the day intrepid frontersmen would shoot just in front
of the nose of a squirrel with their .50 cal(or other large bore) muzzle
loader. The squirrel would be killed by the shockwave as the bullet came by but
no meat would be damaged.
Dad and I tried it on several occasions but were never able to make it work. Of
course we were limited in our shooting opportunities by limiting our selves to
shots where we had an appropriate backstop. I'm sure the frontiersmen would
shoot at squirrels up in a tree, devil may care where the bullet would land.

No doubt similar effect is at work in the ER story.

Years ago a man came into the ER who was missing the bottom half of his

scrotum but his testicles were in good shape, hanging by the vein,
 artery,
and spermatic cord.
His girlfriends husband had caught them in bed, he raised up on his
 knees
when the door flew open, and her husband shot between his legs with a
 .45
cal pistol.
A cop said the slug didn't hit his scrotum but that it had come close
 and
that was enough to blow part of it off.
It seemed unlikely at the time but since then I've seen what kind of
 damage
a .45 slug can do.
The doctor managed to sew what was left of the scrotum back around the
testicles and in 24 hours the suture lines were healed.

Speaking of that trying to drag a shotgun out fr - I read or heard a
man 22feet away can cross a room and be on you before you can grab a gun
from the nightstand. IIRC they tested it and found it true.

Even so, I don't keep my handgun so close I might pick it up while half
asleep. I take pain meds and my sleep is erratic. I've awakened in the
past and been confused about the time, day and what I was supposed to be
doing - one time I started getting dressed at 3am instead of 445a when I
usually get up. Not a terrible loss of control but I don't want to have a
gun in my hand when my mind is not fully alert.

Hopefully the Manson Clan ;-) won;t chose to attack when I'm like that -
which isn't often thankfully.

For nearly 2 yrs I've been plugging and unplugging my mobility scooter

put the scooter charging system on a circuit controlled by the

 fuse holder.

Following are procedures to access the terminals:

 1. Open hood to full, vertical position.
 2. Disconnect battery.
 3. Remove fuse acccess cover.
 4. Loosen six screws in relay cover and fuse access cover frame (1 piece).
 5. Remove relay cover and fuse access cover frame.
 6. Loosen screw at front, center of fuse panel/holder.
 7. Lift fuse panel/holder at front while pulling it forward to unhook

 8. Continue pulling the fuse holder upward and forward while carefullly
pulling bundle of wires from box beneath fuse holder.
 9. Turn fuse holder upside-down to reveal screw terminals on underside.

That's exactly why I chose the 45 ACP because it's a big, slow bullet. A 45

I have a 44 Magnum too - a Ruger Blackhawk. It's a great weapon to shoot for

true. If you hit somebody with a .357 or a .44 mag, and you live close to
another house, or perhaps in an apartment, it could go right thru the guy,

[MBZ] 240D Noise

2007-08-17 Thread LarryT
Howdy,
A few weeks ago I asked about a fan like noise I hear from the drivers
seat side only. It doesn;t start until 25-30mph and is like a large fan.
Not a rough, rumbling or gritty noise - very smooth as if there were a
turbine under the hood. (I wish!)

Anyway, suggested possibilities were the wheel bearings, and driveshaft.
I check both without finding a problem,
I didn't take then apart, but under braking the cars stops straight with
hands off the s wheel - no heat from the wheel bearing caps - well, not
none, but equal heat.

So, should I repack the front wheel bearings in case that's the problem?
Also, when the rear w.brgs fail what are the symptoms?

The d-shaft is tight and turns smooth by hand.

The T-Converter doesn't fail does it? Being hydraulic I would think they
last forever.

Depends on how its loaded, you don't need 3 super magnums for self
defense, a light load of #6s will do the job sufficiently.
Aim a little high 100 pellets in the face will deter most intruders.

I've had the opportunity to confront someone with a gun before and for
sheer intimidation factor a 12ga pump is hard to beat. Fortunately I did
not have to fire simply jacking the chamber closed (unloaded as it were)
was plenty of incentive for the intruder to lie down on the floor while I
 called the police.

Considering the way a 12 ga. kicks, I wonder about that pistol grip.

A typical home confrontation is 7'. If someone sees you decides to run at

Re: [MBZ] Handguns and the law

2007-08-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
No, body armor will protect him but will leave a huge bruise.

Remember, for every action, there is an equal opposing reaction. You shoot
the handgun the recoil is distributed across the palm of your hand, down
your arm into your body. Think of everything as a living shock absorber.

But your target experiences something different. The bullet hits with the
same energy that was absorbed by your hand. But in the case of a 45 ACP, the
same amount of energy travels foreword through the body in a shock wave,
starting with the 0.45 penetration point, causing damage to occur in a fast
spreading cone shape in front of the round. He's not being knocked down -
he's falling down from the shock to his system.

Faster rounds penetrate faster, causing a much narrower damage cone less
shock to the system. Get fast enough the damage cone will not be much
larger than the bullet itself the bullet will exit from the other side.
This is why the police have to shoot some bad guys multiple times with their
9mm. They are not delivering enough shock to the target (the bad guy) to
bring him down with one round. He may even get away die later, but that
does not stop him from doing what he is doing RIGHT NOW.

Years ago, the Madison County Sherriff's department had a fugitive holed up
in a house. He came out shooting was hit with several 9mm rounds. A 45 ACP
round stopped him. It's the shock factor.

Well, the car, as you know, has been for sale for a while. It is still
for sale, but I have been doing much to get it sold. It drives great,
runs great, still looks good and is comfortable. I let my autotrader ad
expire and I have not done anything else to sell it. The reason the
house is for sale is because of a mistake. We live in a really
interesting neighborhood called College Hill. All of the houses are old.
The trees are large and many of the streets are cobblestone. A lot of
the houses have old carriage houses for garages and the houses all have
lots of character. Some people would say that it is for the rich and
snobby people. What they don't realize is that the neighborhood is not
just for Rich people (because I am NOT rich - maybe once I get my damn
student loans paid off I will be closer). The houses in the
neighborhood range from $1.5 Million to less than $100,000. That is one
thing that is very interesting about it. The $1.5 Million house is only
2 blocks east and 2 blocks south of my house. But, my house is only
$160,000. at any rate, my wife and I were bored one Sunday afternoon
and it was beautiful outside, so we decided to go for a drive. We
noticed that a couple of houses in College Hill were having an Open
House. So, we went and looked. Now, we didn't look at the $500,000
house that we couldn't afford, we looked at one that was actually pretty
reasonable. We thought it was too expensive and therefore no danger in
looking at it. That night we actually put pen to paper and determined
that we could afford the house. In fact, between what we paid for the
mortgage and the home equity loan - we were paying for a much nicer
house. So, we talked to realtor and she told us how much we could get
for our house. We took the plunge and put it on the market. In the
interim we decided against the against the house that had originally
inspired us to sell our house. We are still looking for our next house.
Now, is not a good time to be selling the market is very slow. So, if it
doesn't sell that is okay we love the house and we can wait until the
market is better.

The frustrating thing is we have had TONS of people looking at the
house. We have had appointments almost everyday for the 40 days it has
been on the market. But, despite all the activity it has not sold.

Here is the listing for our house:

Re: [MBZ] Handguns and the law

2007-08-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
The 45 ACP may not live up to legend but there is no other handgun ball ammo
round that will transfer as much energy into a target. The round was
developed because its predecessor, the 38 caliber, did not have enough
stopping power. Now the military uses 9 mm and most home defense guns are
9mm, which is awful close to the 38 caliber that the 45 ACP replaced.

Remember, it's speed X mass. The other larger caliber rounds have the mass
but they have so much speed that anything short of a hollow point will pass
through, causing death and destruction beyond and I have issues with loading
hollow points into a self defense gun. The 9mm with ball ammo has more speed
but much less mass the ball ammo will also pass through with the same
results.

i'm a .45 acp lover myself, but this mystique of the miraculously
devastating .45 is all nonsense. the traditional 230 grain subsonic .45 is
a nice effective round, but it really won't knock an elephant 9 feet up into
the air. and if you shoot someone in the finger with one and he falls down,
it's probably because he's seen in the movies and thinks that's what you do
when shot. and a modern, high pressure 9mm will kill a guy just as well.

i personally like big bore guns (ask some of the kids about my .454), but
carry a .380 in real life as the bigger guns just make my pants fall down at
inopportune moments.

He also disproved the canard that the pistol is more dangerous to an
adversary if you throw it than if you shoot it. The man could powder
small rocks 50 yards away. My class learned to shoot pretty well if I
 remember correctly.

Before the Brady Law went into effect, I felt a strange need to own a
 pistol
the feds wouldn't know about.

For maximum power and recoil, try a Ruger .44 Magnum, but that is another
 story.

True, true, true.

In gunfighting days in the Old West, the double barrel shotgun
(two row, so called) was absolutely the most deadly personal
weapon, measured by kills in close combat. You could look it up.

12 gauge autoloaders are not called alley cleaners for nothing.

That's exactly why I chose the 45 ACP because it's a big, slow bullet. A
 45
ACP has less penetration than even a 9mm. No-one has any business shooting
 a
magnum anything in a neighborhood, even in self defense.

 I have a 44 Magnum too - a Ruger Blackhawk. It's a great weapon to shoot
 for
fun to deer hunt with, but that's just about it.

This is getting a little OT (unless you don't want to shoot the mercedes
in the garage through the fireproof wall), but a .357 mag revolver can
 shoot
 a .38 special round, and a .44 mag can shoot a .44 special round.

In addition, Glaser safety slugs (prefragmented bullets) work well in
revolvers where you don't want to deal with overpenetration.

If you're going to pull the trigger, make sure you know what's behind your
target. It's surprising how this escapes a lot of people.

That is exactly why I went to law school in the Midwest and decided to

Now, I know the wages are also higher on the coast, but when you factor
in the higher wages and much higher cost of living, I would prefer to
live here.

By the way, you are right my realtor is a fine specimen - even better

have a good looking woman when you are trying to sell something.

BUT, her husband has even more guns then you all do. They live on 20

Well, the car, as you know, has been for sale for a while. It is still
for sale, but I have been doing much to get it sold. It drives great,
runs great, still looks good and is comfortable. I let my
 autotrader ad
expire and I have not done anything else to sell it. The reason the
house is for sale is because of a mistake. We live in a really
interesting neighborhood called College Hill. All of the houses are
 old.
The trees are large and many of the streets are cobblestone. A lot of
the houses have old carriage houses for garages and the houses all
 have
lots of character.
That
 is one
thing that is very interesting about it. The $1.5 Million house is
 only
2 blocks east and 2 blocks south of my house. But, my house is only
$160,000. at any rate, my wife and I were bored one Sunday afternoon
and it was beautiful outside, so we decided to go for a drive. We
noticed that a couple of houses in College Hill were having an Open
House. So, we went and looked. Now, we didn't look at the $500,000
house that we couldn't afford, we looked at one that was actually
 pretty
reasonable. We thought it was too expensive and therefore no
 danger in
looking at it.
We are still looking for our next
 house.
Now, is not a good time to be selling the market is very slow. So,
 if it
doesn't sell that is okay we love the house and we can wait until the
 market is better.

The frustrating thing is we have had TONS of people looking at the
house. We have had appointments almost everyday for the 40 days it has
been on the market. But, despite all the activity it has not sold.

Here is the listing for our house:

Well, the car, as you know, has been for sale for a while. It is still

runs great, still looks good and is comfortable. I let my
 autotrader ad
expire and I have not done anything else to sell it. The reason the
house is for sale is because of a mistake. We live in a really
interesting neighborhood called College Hill. All of the houses are
 old.
The trees are large and many of the streets are cobblestone. A lot of
the houses have old carriage houses for garages and the houses all
 have
lots of character.
That
 is one
thing that is very interesting about it. The $1.5 Million house is
 only
2 blocks east and 2 blocks south of my house. But, my house is only
$160,000. at any rate, my wife and I were bored one Sunday afternoon
and it was beautiful outside, so we decided to go for a drive. We
noticed that a couple of houses in College Hill were having an Open
House. So, we went and looked. Now, we didn't look at the $500,000
house that we couldn't afford, we looked at one that was actually
 pretty
reasonable. We thought it was too expensive and therefore no
 danger in
looking at it.

Somehow I'm thinking if I'm awakened at 3am and have to defend myself I'm not
going to pay a super load of attention to whats behind the intruder...
Thats why I like the 20ga or even .410 with #6s, if I miss or if a few pellets
get around the perp I'll just need to pick them out of the wall later.

That said I do not currently have a firearm in the house although an inline
muzzleloader is on the to buy list. The muzzleloading deer season here is
quite long (when you included conventional deer season) and you can hunt in
some otherwise prohibited places and the state of MA doesn't consider it a gun
preventing my needing an FID.

This is getting a little OT (unless you don't want to shoot the
 mercedes
in the garage through the fireproof wall), but a .357 mag revolver can
 shoot
a .38 special round, and a .44 mag can shoot a .44 special round.

In addition, Glaser safety slugs (prefragmented bullets) work well in
revolvers where you don't want to deal with overpenetration.

If you're going to pull the trigger, make sure you know what's behind
 your
target. It's surprising how this escapes a lot of people.

The Mythbusters decided that if you shot exactly straight up that the bullet

That is decidedly NOT true if you shoot at any sort of angle other than

Force is actually velocity squared times mass. The important factor is the
bullets ability to transfer the energy though.
A bullet that passes through the body is no good unless you hit something
really vital.

The 45 ACP may not live up to legend but there is no other handgun ball
 ammo
round that will transfer as much energy into a target. The round was
developed because its predecessor, the 38 caliber, did not have enough
stopping power. Now the military uses 9 mm and most home defense guns
 are
9mm, which is awful close to the 38 caliber that the 45 ACP replaced.

Remember, it's speed X mass. The other larger caliber rounds have the
 mass
but they have so much speed that anything short of a hollow point will
 pass
through, causing death and destruction beyond and I have issues with
 loading
hollow points into a self defense gun. The 9mm with ball ammo has more
 speed
but much less mass the ball ammo will also pass through with the same
results.

I was thinking the same thing but then I remembered, I've been to the midwest
twice and HATED it both times.
I spent 1 day in Minneapolis and with the exception of a really good dinner at
a Cuban (of all places) restaurant it was the one of the most depressing places
I've ever been. Granted mid-March is a depressing time.
I spent 2 days in Indy and nearly every person I met annoyed me. Why do people
insist on calling me hon I nearly strangled a waitress, well that and she
just wouldn't shut up. I'd been working for 20 some hours and just wanted food
and sleep. For some reason she decided I wanted her life story.
In New England people know when to leave you alone. Especially when you say
things like thats nice but I'd really prefer you leave me alone for a bit.

Yeah I'm a yankee through and through, this is where I belong. One time right
after MA decided gay marriage was okay I was reading a tractor themed
discussion forum and somebody asked What the hell are people in MA doing? and
I replied Whatever the hell we want and its none of your dammed business.
Which pretty much sums it up I think.
