Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-08-22 Thread Jim Cathey
Today's log:

Ah _there_ it is! The idle controller, though behind the glovebox as
advertised, is tucked to the left sideways against the HVAC plenum and
_not_ forward against the firewall as shown in the manual. (Those are
the blower and temperature controllers for the ACC system, and the
fuel pump relay.) It's marked:

 002 545 33 32
 Leerlaufdrehzahrlregelung
 Idle Speed Control8Zyl.
 412.202/01012V

It is, I might add, a VDO unit and not Bosch. I've come to expect
soldering trouble from VDO's electronics, whereas Bosch's don't seem
to have nearly as much trouble.

Opened, it revealed a LM2901 quad comparitor, two LM2902 quad op-amps,
three signal transistors, one power transistor, sixteen diodes, six
electrolytic capacitors, and the usual handful of resistors and
capacitors. Two of the resistors were mounted on stakes and looked
like tuneable items. (Idle speed being one, I presume.) This circuit
was also varnish-coated, so I hit it with the paint stripper too. The
soldering didn't really look that bad, but it doesn't take all that
long to redo. There were a few spots that looked questionable.

I also pulled the monovalve and had a look at it. It looked good, the
diaphragm was not torn. I cleaned the screen off with a bristle brush
and put it back together. The coil continuity was good, the plunger
was not hydrolocked.

The stupid hood pad fell down again, so I had to glue it back up.
What a pain!

The car started easily, and idled normally. We'll see how it behaves.

...Some have suggested I check into Remco's towing products. They
have a driveshaft disconnector, and a transmission lube pump system!
(As well as tow bars, etc.) That lube pump system looks very
interesting, I bet one of them can be adapted to this car even if they
don't officially offer it.

Driving the car today the idle seemed as before: nothing really wrong
with it. Still seems a touch high, if it bothers me enough I could
try tuning the resistors inside the controller. Maybe someday. The
ACC was definitely heating today, it might even have been overdoing
it. On MIN it switched to cooling (vent only), so mostly it seems to
be behaving itself. The foam tube kept coming off, I think it's about
1/2 too short. I'll glue on the offending end when I get home, that
may have been its only problem.

Once home I had some free time, so I glued on the loose end of the
foam tube. I then pulled out the idle speed actuator and cleaned it
out with carb cleaner. A lot of black gunk came out. Tested on the
bench it seemed to behave properly, so I reinstalled it. The rubber
mounting hoses are a bit loose, but I don't think they're leaking yet.
They're still flexible, so I don't think I have to replace them. With
the engine running a spray of carb cleaner around the valve didn't
result in an RPM change, proof of sorts. I note that the vacuum
advance line to the distributor is purposely disconnected, I'm going
to have to go through the engine vacuum plumbing some time to put it
all right. There was a missing screw on one of the exhaust manifold
heat shields so I dug up a suitable 10mm screw and installed it. That
should help prevent nasty rattling noises, which I hate.

Next up was the AC system. I pulled off the R134a conversion
fittings, there was only a residual puff of pressure. I moved the
Schrader valves from the conversion fittings back to the R12 fittings,
then connected up the vacuum pump and put a quick vacuum on it. It
seemed to hold vacuum, so I then put about 60 psi of propane into the
system, that didn't leak down either (not that I gave it much time,
but I was only looking for profound leakage) and the ACC system was
able to engage the compressor with that little bit of pressure. With
the preliminaries out of the way I vacuumed the system for more than
1/2 hour. It took some minutes before the vacuum pump started making
the rattling noise that indicates that a deep vacuum has been pulled.
I don't know if there was moisture or not, but vacuuming can't hurt,
and a half hour is about the minimum that'll do any real good removing
moisture. Once vacuumed I then charged the sytem with the test
refrigerant: 8 oz. of Isobutane/Propane (R600a/R290) mix, followed by
a propane charge until the system seemed to be operating correctly.
(This takes some time to sneak up on, it's not like you just put in 3
cans of R12 and call it good.) Unfortunately evening was approaching
and it wasn't really all that hot, not good conditions for charging a
system this way. I did see 39 degF vent temperatures, but that's no
great feat under these conditions. Still, it did seem to be working.
Time will tell if I have it charged right, and if the system works
correctly and doesn't leak.

The lights were next. I've been afraid that I might be caught in the
dark with them messed up as they are. I pulled the offending bucket
assembly out of the car and found that the 6-pin connector was shifted
by one

2007-08-22 Thread Jim Cathey
Since the 115/114 shared so many parts with the 107, would not a
transmission set up from that model be a pretty good hook up?

Perhaps, though the V8's might be a bit too strong for the
usual manual transmission. The clutch/flywheel area was where
I was particularly expecting difficulties, and perhaps the pedal
assembly itself. Did any of MB's V8 cars ever have a manual
transmission? Ever?

At the moment a bolt-on hydraulic pump is in the lead so far
as ease of conversion goes.

your county has a red box around it (if the severe weather overlay is

The temp internet folder is usually buried in your user folder under My
documents, however it's been a few weeks since I dug around in windows
and my memory banks are flat out trying to work out Linux. Easiest thing
is to go back to the download website and click on the download link.
This should bring up the window where it will tell you the file name and
the location of the temp folder (you have to follow the directory tree
up to figure out the path)

worse in an engine that supposedly ony has about 115k mi. on it. :)

Since you talk about backing out of the garage and up the hill, is
it not possible that it is just because you
 are
putting the vehicle under load when it is not yet warmed up? More
smoke and a bit of oil might just be an issue
 while it is cold.

I had a situation with my old 68 Chevy pickup a few years back. I
was trying to back a travel trailer up an
 incline
in a spot with little room to manouver and as such could get no
run at it at all. By the time I got the trailer
 up
the hill the truck was blowing blue smoke real bad. I assumed that
I had damaged the motor by forcing it to move
the trailer up the hill at low speed. However, that was in 1991. I
still have the truck and it is not using oil.
 It
did not seem to suffer any long term issue. It just did it the one
time when I put a real load on it.

It's not using much oil at all. I have a leak at the oil filter lines
that attach to the block. And with this, the level goes down maybe a
pint every, well, so often. I don't put many miles on the thing - I
try not to drive very much. Am fortunate enough to be able to bicycle
 much more than I drive.

Another note: I recently added oil. The level was just above the add
mark, and this with the engine completely cold and not run for a day
or so. So I assumed that if it were to be run and cooled and the
 level
checked, the level would be a bit lower. So I intended to add a pint,
which I thought would bring the level up to half way between the add
and full marks - where it should be, right? But I accidentally added
2/3 of a quart. So perhaps its being a bit fuller than it likes
contributes to the described smoking condition?

Had a thought this evening as I backed out my driveway in the 240D.
It's a fairly steep but short driveway.

I notice that there is an unpleasant amount of smoke when I do
 this. I
thought maybe it's just that I notice it since I'm backing into the
exhaust. But tonight I smelled burning oil.

Was wondering if somehow the angle of the car coupled with the
 inertia
of moving backward could cause the engine to burn some oil?

I don't know how this would specifically work, it's just a bit of
 general detective work.

Depends on which car. The expansion valve on the 124 is between the
firewall behind and inboard of the brake booster. On the 126 I expect
it's still behind and above the brake pedal (and an absolute BEAST to
 work on).

For the 126 lie on your back with your head next to the gas

LinkSys stuff which seems to be fine, Belkin makes stuff (I have read

some other kinds. They also come in various speeds (designated by
letters, N is now the fastest, G was before) but that is more for inside
your home network as your speed will be limited by your net cnxn. You
will probably need a DSL or cable modem too, into which the router
plugs. The slower routers are cheap, I have seen some new for $25,
modems about that too. The faster routers are up to $100. You might
just check around to see if you can find someone's used one if they have

Re: [MBZ] WAS O/T Router NOW OT Sprinter Plug-in Hybrid delivery vans

2007-08-22 Thread andrew strasfogel
Jenny Mandel, *Greenwire* reporter

In a test designed to provide feedback on its advanced lithium ion
technology, battery manufacturer Johnson Controls-Saft will convert a fleet
of Dodge Sprinter delivery vans into plug-in hybrids, the company announced
yesterday.

The vans, made by Chrysler LLC, will be outfitted as plug-in hybrids that
operate primarily on an electric motor and recharge through an outlet.

The delivery vans are slated to be deployed at multiple locations and to be
monitered to provide feedback on how the batteries perform under various
operating conditions.

The vehicles will use lithium-ion batteries that provide more power than
batteries that propel currently available hybrid vehicles, and that are 47
percent lighter than the nickel-metal hydride batteries they replace,
officials said.

Advanced battery technology is the single most important enabler in making
all types of electric vehicles practical, said Mary Ann Wright, who heads
the joint venture between French energy storage company Saft *(Euronext:
Saft)* and auto battery company Johnson Controls *(NYSE: JCI)*.

She noted that pluggable hybrids, conventional hybrids, electric vehicles
and fuel-cell cars all stand to benefit from advances in lithium battery
technology.

Fleet vehicles are often used for early deployments of new vehicle
technologies because they allow for more controlled use.

In a program run by Internet search company Google's *(NASDAQ:
GOOG)*foundation arm, vehicle use data is being collected on a small
fleet of
Toyota Prius cars with an after-market modification to run as plug-in
vehicles using the battery technology of A123 Systems, a rival of Watertown,
Mass.-based Johnson Controls-Saft.

Lithium ion batteries provide more power than the nickel-metal hydride
technology that is commonly used in conventional vehicles, but they are
prone to overheating and can spontaneously catch fire, a problem that
triggered a massive recall of laptop computer batteries in 2006
(*Greenwirehttp://www.eenews.net/Greenwire/2007/08/10/archive/10
*, Aug. 10).

Several automakers are pursuing improved lithium ion batteries to overcome
the problem, though the *Wall Street Journal* recently reported that Toyota
officials had indicated a delay in the introduction of lithium-based
pluggable cars linked to the overheating issue
(*Greenwire*http://www.eenews.net/Greenwire/2007/08/09/archive/7,
Aug. 9).

Apple Airport Extreme.

Yeah, yeah, I know - it's an Apple product. However,
it's set up to work with either Mac or Windoze
platforms, and does it quite well.

Probably one of the nicest features it has is the
capability for a shared printer and network attached
storage, or NAS. That's any external USB hard drive
you can plug in to the router and all your users have
access to it. That means you can stick common files,
like music, pictures, docs, etc. on the NAS and anyone
who has rights to the access point can get to them.
Nice.

It was a more cosmetic than actual needed repair. The manual shift

To prevent repeats, I will now take car and idiot self to BiL who

I have a leak at the oil filter
 lines
that attach to the block. And with this, the level goes down maybe a
pint every, well, so often. I don't put many miles on the thing - I
try not to drive very much. Am fortunate enough to be able to
 bicycle
 much more than I drive.

Another note: I recently added oil. The level was just above the add
mark, and this with the engine completely cold and not run for a day
or so. So I assumed that if it were to be run and cooled and the
 level
checked, the level would be a bit lower. So I intended to add a
 pint,
which I thought would bring the level up to half way between the add
and full marks - where it should be, right? But I accidentally added
2/3 of a quart. So perhaps its being a bit fuller than it likes
contributes to the described smoking condition?

If you had read the entire article you would have seen that the
stakeholder will meet on Oct 4th to decide a name.
Perhaps you could buy some stock and head on down to voice your opinion.
I think part of the reason for the Daimler only name is that they don't
want to admit that they made a big stuff up and just using Daimler is a
way of saying that this is all part of natural progression, whereas
going back to DB would be an admission that DC was a mistake.

I would suggest everyone immediately go out to their cars and check the
steering components and control arms to make sure there are no pigeons
roosting on them and leaving guano deposits that could cause premature
failure of suspension elements through accelerated corrosion leading to
loss of control and crashes. Seriously, according to experts. You

[MBZ] 380SL ignition followup

2007-08-22 Thread Loren Faeth
Thanks to all who contributed ideas. Using info provided by Robert
Bingham, I was able to verify the coil and distributor pickup were
ok. Based on that info, I bit the bullet and ordered the ignition
control module from Rusty. He has 3 to choose from, the most
expensive being the Bosch OEM unit. I chose the least expensive,
which looks dissimilar from the OEM unit. It does mount in the
original position using the original screws. After 3 weeks of
running, there have been no more ignition problems.

I think that was it. I thought so ahead of time, but I didn't want
to spend $560 on an experiment.

I believe Jim Cathey's method of resoldering would have fixed the old
unit. The old ICU is available to anyone who likes to solder as an
experiment. If you want to try a resolder of a $560 ICU, contact me
offlist and I will provide the subject for your experiment.

Please folks, ASK RUSTY FIRST before you order parts from anywhere
else! He saved me a bunch of bucks on this one! If you don't know
how to contact Rusty, read the bottom of every email on this
list! And don't forget to check with Kaleb for used parts. He
provides the list for us.

[MBZ] pulling gasser injectors??

2007-08-22 Thread E M
Hi Everyone,

Next thing I'd like to do on the w124 gasser with a 3.0L engine is pull the
fuel injectors. Ok, the questions, the fuel lines are ridged, so unlike my
other car with CIS, I guess I'll have to remove the lines first before
taking out the injectors? Ok, so with a stone cold engine, can I just undo
the nut on the line that connects to the injector? I know CIS is under more
than 100psi, but won't a rag over it do to catch the fuel mist? Also, I
notice a bracket that seems to prevent the injector from turning while the
fuel line is being attached or removed. That bracket seems to be held in
place with a hex bolt. So, with the fuel line removed, and the bracket
removed, what to expect next?? Does the injector just push in, using an O
ring like my other car with CIS? There seems to be a while or off white
washer that sits just ontop of the head, and the injector goes through it.
Does this remain in the head when you pull the injector? Looks like a good
spot for an air leak, hee hee. So, putting it all back together, is there a
procedure for bleeding the air out of the fuel lines, or just crank it and
let the fuel pump purge the air?

Any tips offered is much appreciated, other than telling me not to do it,
because you know I am! hee hee :-)

Thanks everyone.
