hi Curt!

there's much grousing in the BMW community about people finding it
difficult to check the oil level, and all kinds of stories about mystic

procedures folks go through to get an accurate reading,... personally,
i've never found it difficult to do a visual check of the sight glass
while i'm standing next to the machine while i'm gearing up before
riding. (admittedly, this is while on the main stand; checking oil
 level
on the boxer isn't possible with the machine on the side stand.) of
course, with the amount of oil that the ancient design boxer chews
through when subjected to ahem! 'spirited' riding, an oil check
 before
every ride is mandatory, and almost always results in couple of glugs
off the of oil bottle.

cheers!

Re: [MBZ] Interesting video

2007-08-29 Thread Curt Raymond

May have.
FI is one thing I'll grant them. My FIL has an Ultra Classic with FI and its
pretty sweet. He his the starter and it starts and idles perfectly every time.
My Honda requires much fiddling until its ready to go.
Of course my Honda will do 100mph with another gear left to go into...

Anyway the downside is Harley apparently used cheap gasket material where the
air intake (its not a carb, but some sort of metering dohicky) mates to the
jug. On FIL's bike the gasket dried out, failed and he all of a sudden had a
runaway engine.
Fortunately he had great presence of mind and saved the farm with the
killswitch.

 the vacuum pump drive.

Also, the upper oil pan is different. Only matters if you are going
W126/W123 - W116. Oil pan will hit front subframe.

Yeah well. I'm under the impression getting BMW bikes onto the center
stand is relatively painless. I've seen lots of them on them even in
 parking lots.

I think so. I rode my dad's (K100?) a few years back and it
was pretty nicely set up.

Jap bikes, well my Jap bikes anyway are a serious PITA to get onto the
center stand. Even the Kawi 454 which is a small bike I've nearly
dropped while trying to get on the centerstand.
My Honda CB900f, forget it, 2 man job.

There seems to be a trick to it, IIRC my CB750F was a real PITA
until I threw caution to the winds. You have to tread heavily
on the stick-up knob coming up off the stand while the bike
is straight vertical yet seems (to the cautious such as myself)
to be ready to fall over the other way. Ignore that and just
pull up on whatever it is there at the rear to pull up on,
one-handed. (The other's on the handgrip.)

It just rides right up.

I wouldn't go quite that far. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
after all, and I happen to think Mercedes pre 90's are very good
 looking cars.

Indeed. I think the ass end of most Jags is g-leeey. Except
that on the right ragtop it really looks nice. Pre-90's MB work
for me, except for the rear of the 124 non-wagon. I loathe
wedge-shaped short-throw low-loading trunk styling nearly as
much as I loathe the pinched-off dog-doo look of that 80's caddy
trunk.

Though, the newest aero shaped one is starting to grow
on me. There is one I see on a semi regular basis on my trip to and
from work. Though a 108 or a 116 still beats it in my opinion.

It's probably the era and my age, but the 107 and 116 are
my favorites. A nice 100 will do, too, as does a 114 convertible.
I think a 123 convertible is also pretty sweet.

I could centerstand a Gold Wing 1300 or a CB900F when I weighed 135lb.
Had to, I was a Honda mechanic at the time. Sometimes it got a bit
scary when some joker with an Aspencade dropped off his bike with 100lb
of luggage in it. I did not enjoy test riding V65s or full dress GWs.

Stand to the left of the bike, right hand under the edge of the seat or
on the grab rail, left hand on the bars. Put your right foot on the tab
on the centerstand and swing the stand down to the ground.
With both sides of the centerstand on the ground, press down onto the
stand with your foot while lifting up and to the back with your right
hand. Your foot on the stand helps lever the bike up, and as you lift
on the saddle, you get heavier while the bike gets lighter.

I had to be taught this by the service manager. I'd had my own bikes
since I was 15, but nothing heavy enough that I couldn't just pull
back on the bars to get it on the stand.

Mitch.

it's painless if you do it right, otherwise you can break your back

like a piece of cake. key to note is that you don't just pull it up;
it's an up-and-back motion all at the same time. (worked for me on all
my other bikes, to; many of which were Japanese,...)

 hi Curt!

there's much grousing in the BMW community about people finding it
difficult to check the oil level, and all kinds of stories about mystic

procedures folks go through to get an accurate reading,... personally,
i've never found it difficult to do a visual check of the sight glass
while i'm standing next to the machine while i'm gearing up before
riding. (admittedly, this is while on the main stand; checking oil
  level
on the boxer isn't possible with the machine on the side stand.) of
course, with the amount of oil that the ancient design boxer chews
through when subjected to ahem! 'spirited' riding, an oil check
  before
every ride is mandatory, and almost always results in couple of glugs
 off the of oil bottle.

 cheers!

work with the storm sewers to collect and meter water into them, so the

streets tend to fill up 6 or so and then start running over into the
grass. So I look outside a little while ago and there is this guy in a

suit standing in the middle of that next to his Maserati Coupe which
 was
becalmed and dead in the water. Flatbed showed up a few minutes

What I hate, on both the 116 and the 123, is the hole for the
headlights is obviously the Euro rectangle. Just as obviously they
weren't about to have completely different sheetmetal for U.S. so we
get these completely after thought plastic pieces to fit the round

retool for air bags and others just wouldn't so the seat belts were
placed in a motorized track. The Mitsu Eclipse is the one that comes
immediately to mind. The Canadian Eclipse had the regular fixed seat

Tacky, tacky, tacky. And, the damn motors broke so now you see some of
these things with the seat belts stuck in the middle of the track.
Complete after thought. I may be a little OCD when it comes to cars,

Re: [MBZ] home rustoleum results

2007-08-29 Thread R A Bennell
I have not done this with a car (yet) but have had pretty decent results in
painting things like the tank on my air
compressor. The foamy roller leaves a texture similar to the orange peel effect
of spraying. The article says that
the trick is to thin to the right consistency and I believe it as I have been
getting reasonable results without
thinning at all. It certainly is much better than using a brush. Easy cleanup
too. I use a piece of aluminum foil
in the small paint tray and then just toss it out so I don't have to clean it
up. Throw away the foamy roller after
it dries and no cleanup apart from the lip of the can tha you poured the paint
out of. Only down side is that the
silly little rollers are about $1 each and I have not found any source that
sells them in bunches. Normally see
them in packets of 1 to 6. I would buy a bag of 100 if they were cheap and good
quality.

My son has an old Jeep with lots of rusty spots. We are planning to use the
foamy roller treatment on it to slow
the rust and make it look a bit better. Not looking for show quality.

Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-08-29 Thread Jim Cathey
I pulled the ignition module back out, cleaned behind it, and put
thermal grease between it and the fender wall. I put it back, and
replaced the missing third mounting screw with one from the donor car
so that it would be clamped down securely for good thermal contact.
That took an hour that I didn't account for, I should have done it
right the first time.

I then pulled the ignition coil out and repaired its mount. One of
the captive nuts was pulling through the fender wall so I hammered it
back down. While I was there I rerouted the wiring to the coil so
that I could put on the plastic coil cover from the donor car. (All
wires exit the cover from the same side, and none of the ring
terminals can hang over the side.)

The AC/fuel heat exchanger is supposed to clamp to this same mount,
but the clamping strap was gone. I fabricated a new one from the
AC/fuel heat exchanger mount from the donor car, using the grinder,
BFH, pliers, and the anvil. It clamps nicely around the new foam
insulation, and doesn't even look too bad. With all this done
everything is much more solidly mounted than before.

Unfortunately during all this I managed to break a nipple off of the
vacuum valve on the vapor tank, so I had to pull that off and repair
it. I used cyanoacrylate glue to tack it back into place, then potted
it in Shoe Goo for strength. We'll see if it holds up once it has
set, it may not be strong enough.

Thermostat housing
Vacuum pump and drive
Oil filter housing
Motor mount arms
Kick down cable
The upper oil pan is different. For example the xx.950 does not have

drain in the air cleaner.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Centerstands, was pillory!

2007-08-29 Thread LWB250
That technique works for just about any Jap bike, I
believe.

I fought with my XV1100 Virago, actually dropping it
once when I tried (I was under the bike, so it didn't
hit the ground - it just smashed the crap out of me)
to get it on the center stand.

Finally, an old grizzled Harley guy I knew showed me
the technique below - if he weighed 180 wet I would
have been amazed.

I cheat a bit when I park it in the garage - I took a
piece of 4/4 oak about 8 long and 3 wide and screwed
it to the garage floor where the back tire goes. I
back it onto the piece of wood, which raises it off
the floor about 2, put the center stand down and pull
back. It comes right up with this approach. It saves
a lot on my back and allows me to park it in a pretty
narrow space where it's tough to get to the side of
the bike with enough room to pull it up.

Stand to the left of the bike, right hand under the
 edge of the seat or
on the grab rail, left hand on the bars. Put your
 right foot on the tab
on the centerstand and swing the stand down to the
 ground.
With both sides of the centerstand on the ground,
 press down onto the
stand with your foot while lifting up and to the
 back with your right
hand. Your foot on the stand helps lever the bike
 up, and as you lift
on the saddle, you get heavier while the bike gets
 lighter.

I had to be taught this by the service manager. I'd

   hi Kaleb!

that's not the case in Calif.; i'm sure that (as with all things
insurance related) it varies from state-to-state, but i've had
  Uninsured

of course the scumbags actually wanted to argue about it first,
saying (with a straight face): can you prove the other guy didn't
 have
insurance?. when i pointed out that it was a state requirement for
drivers to prove that they *did* have insurance (something they
 hadn't
been able to do for the officer on the scene), they finally sent me
 my
money, but they even dragged that out into 2 separate checks...!
point is, they did *eventually* pay; but like with every other
situation where the insurance company is paying you, i had to
  disbelieve
what they told me first and make it clear i wasn't going to settle
 for
   their first story.

   cheers!

Any suggestions on what to do? And no, he won't replace it with a diesel

For noise suppression, I suggested he attach fiberglass insulation

The issue with the seal swelling oil is that it's not selective will swell
all seals. Then when the old, newly swollen seals return back to normal you
have more leaks than you had before. It's a real PIA when this happens to

Replace the seal or put a piece of cardboard under the car.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Centerstands, was pillory!

2007-08-29 Thread Wonko the Sane
I know the technique, but there is something that really bothers me about
standing on the left side of a heavy motorcycle, tipping it straight, and
then yanking on it. I am a large and fairly strong individual, but if the
bike tipped to the right, there is NO way my biceps would yank it back to
vertical.

My technique. Have the bike on left side stand. Put right foot on the center
stand. Pick the ass-end of the bike up. Flip down the center stand and let
the bike rest on it. Stand back and wish I had a cold beer in the
refrigerator. Check for chest pains. Take a couple of Ibuprofen.

I ONLY center-stand when I need to do so for maintenance. And when that
happens, I ask the wife (the sacrificial wife?) to hold the right handlebar
in case the bike tips. ... I have also been known to call the brother-in-law
over to do it for me. He gets a kick out of snatching the bike up onto the
stand and saying, What, this? ... But he too has admitted to trepidation
when he had to snatch his Gold Wing up to center stand.

True. The majority of noise complaints for RV gensets
are due to some sort of mechanical conflict, where
something is not properly mounted or a mount has
failed and some nimrod replaced it with the wrong
thing.

Vibration isolation is a real science on these things,
and doing something like replacing a solid exhaust

would expect) can cause a boatload of vibration to be
transmitted into the frame.

Also very true. I can recall one day when I was in

calling to complain about his generator not starting
after being stored for over 6 months.

Why, it should start right up, dang it!

Uh, sir, would you expect your car to start right up

You're damned right I would!

I'm really sorry sir, but I can't help you. I would

Sulfur is an anti-flux, that is, it does the opposite of
promoting welding. That is its function in Extreme
Pressure Lubricants and also, I suspect, in operation
of old rotary Bosch IP's.

IMHO, it's a poor deslulfurization process that removes
something besides sulfur. I'd need to hear that the latest
process removes not only the sulfur, but the goodies that
lubricate, with some explanation of process, from a
chemical engineer or someone similarly qualified.

Paraffin is a generic name that refers to hydrocarbons
having a particular type of structure. There are a whole
series of paraffins of different molecular weights. Paraffin
is not one chemical.

That's all the chemical engineering I know or even suspect.
Someone else will have to take it farther.

Sulfur is NOT a lubricant (where did you get that idea?). When sulfur is
removed from the diesel fraction of crude by most usual methods it also
remove the fractions that are the best lubricants. These CAN be
replaced, but until forced to, most refiners didn't.

61x engines have a rope seal retained by a spike, so you have to

All later engines have a rubber lip seal, requires removal of the

Re: [MBZ] Ultra low sulfur diesel and old Injector Pumps

2007-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
The lubricating qualities of the sulfur in diesel fuel are in the
sulfur containing organic molecules. There is no free sulfur dissolved
in diesel fuel, it's all part of some carbon containing molecule (there
are many). It's removed by breaking up those molecules and
precipitating out the molecular sulfur.

Those sulfur containing molecules provide most of the lubricating
qualities of diesel fuel, and are in fact quite good high pressure
lubricants (much better than the paraffins or linear hydrocarbons,
which make up 90+ % of the bulk diesel). Taking them out greatly
reduces the lubricating nature of the fuel.

[MBZ] Insurance coverage

2007-08-29 Thread Robert Bigham
Comprehensive also covers driver stupidity.

I opened the hood, started to pour in some STP, and let the
hood down (but not to where the safety latch could be hooked)
to conserve heat. It was maybe 35 deg at the time.

I went and got a cuppa coffee, drank it, came back,
and drove off. I made it about 2 blocks before the hood came up,
whacked the windshield (at least a million pieces) , bent the hood
hinges (about $700 new from the Benzes) and corners and the
cowl top panel below the windshield.

I was sick. I had to go back and buy some bungees right before
the convenience store closed to tie the hood down so I could drive
on home 50 miles away. 40 mph tops, and then the bungees would
start to stretch. The wounded hood would bob up and down.

A day later I though maybe there was coverage and called.
No problem.

Cost about a grand to fix the car. Shop took too long to fix car,
but otherwise OK. I found a pair of used hood hinges for $20,
one of the outstanding bargains of 2007.

Peter,

If it's a rope seal then there is an easy fix that we used to do all the
time.

Use a drift punch to drive both ends of the existing rope seal up into the
slot.
Cut off enough of the new rope seal to push up plus 1/8.
Use the same punch to seat the new 2 end pieces.
Replace the pan gaskets re-install the pan.

Subject: [MBZ] Insurance coverage

DARN!

Rusty has the part for all of $8. Labor at a shop is going to get me
killed. Is this an immediate issue? If I can put it off until
maybe spring or summer, I will be able to get it past SWMBA and use
#1 boy learner permit as excuse to have all the big boys tear into
the issue with a working shop and real mechanic oversight.

No. Rumor has it that there's a big tooth in the seal channel
that keeps you from doing the slip-through technique.

2007-08-29 Thread Redghost
I have been using M1 for three years and 36k miles. The leak seems
to have been there for at least the past year (from the persistent
oil drip that does not clean away). If it is a non emergent item, I
would be happy to sit on it for a few months. BiL has all the
standard shop tools and can oversee work so I do not make a real mess
of it. Also would allow learning driver to get time under the car
and hands dirty so that he has some ownership of his loaned ride for
the rest of school before he is off to the Corps.

My technique. Have the bike on left side stand. Put right foot on

 and let
the bike rest on it. Stand back and wish I had a cold beer in the

I ONLY center-stand when I need to do so for maintenance. And when

 I could centerstand a Gold Wing 1300 or a CB900F when I weighed

Had to, I was a Honda mechanic at the time. Sometimes it got a bit
scary when some joker with an Aspencade dropped off his bike with
 100lb
of luggage in it. I did not enjoy test riding V65s or full dress GWs.

Stand to the left of the bike, right hand under the edge of the
 seat or
on the grab rail, left hand on the bars. Put your right foot on
 the tab
on the centerstand and swing the stand down to the ground.

 Mitch.

The front seal is a whole nother animal. It's a thick heavy seal that is
pressed in from the front of the engine with a special tool. You can make
the tool from a piece of PVC pipe. The front seal is not accessed by
dropping the pan.

It's just that the engines are so easy to work on in these
cars when compared to later ones and/or larger engines, there
aren't many 'minor' jobs where pulling the engine is necessary.
And you don't have need to do a major job.

I forget, do you have a block heater in there?
